Welcome back to the thread of the only french team who won the Champions League, l’OM !

Olympique de Marseille

History and glory days...

Olympique de Marseille was founded by René Dufaure de Montmirail, a French sports official, in 1892 as an omnisport club. Known as Sporting Club, US Phocéenne and Football Club de Marseille in the first five years after their foundation, the club adopted the name Olympique de Marseille in 1899 in honour of the anniversary of Marseille's founding by Greeks from Phocaea some 25 centuries earlier, with the name Olympique, coming from ancient Olympic Games.

The first period of Olympique de Marseille's domination of the French League started in the early 1970s under Marcel Leclerc's presidency (1965–1972). His ambition allowed Marseille to return to the First division in 1965–66. They went on to win the Coupe de France in 1969 as well as the First division in 1971 with a record of 44 goals by Josip Skoblar, helped by Roger Magnusson. The arrival of Georges Carnus and Bernard Bosquier from Saint-Étienne helped them to win the Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France in 1972. Marseille played in the European Cup in 1971–72 and 1972–73, but were knocked-out by Ajax of Johan Cruyff and Juventus, respectively. However, success was not to last. Marcel Leclerc was forced to leave the club on 19 July 1972. The President was a stubborn man, and he threatened the whole league by threatening to withdraw his professional team from Ligue 1 because the federation refused to accept three foreign players in one team (Leclerc wanted to acquire the Hungarian star Zoltán Varga but he had already the maximum number of two foreigners in his team). But Marseille decided, instead of following Leclerc against the league, to fire him.[4] Then followed an era of crisis, with Marseille only winning a Coupe de France in 1976 and being relegated to the second division, where they played with a bunch of young local players: the Minots who allowed the team to return to First division in 1984. Éric Di Meco was one of them.

On 12 April 1986, Bernard Tapie became president, thanks to Marseille mayor Gaston Defferre, and promptly built the greatest team ever seen in France. His first signings were Karl-Heinz Forster and Alain Giresse, who were bought after the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Tapie signed a large number of highly regarded players over the next few years in his pursuit of the European Cup, such as Jean-Pierre Papin, Chris Waddle, Klaus Allofs, Enzo Francescoli, Abedi Pelé, Didier Deschamps, Basile Boli, Marcel Desailly, Rudi Völler and Eric Cantona as well as appointing high-profile coaches like Franz Beckenbauer, Gérard Gili and Raymond Goethals. Between 1989 and 1992, Olympique de Marseille won four league titles in a row and the French Cup. The highlight of the club's history is winning the new format Champions League in 1993. Basile Boli scored the only goal against Italy's Milan in the final held in Munich's Olympic Stadium. That triumph was the first time ever for a French club and it made Didier Deschamps and Fabien Barthez the youngest captain and goalkeeper, respectively, to capture the title.

This triumph, however, was followed by a decade of decline. In 1994, due to financial irregularities and a match fixing scandal involving then president Bernard Tapie, they suffered enforced relegation to the second division, where Marseille stayed two years before returning to the First division. Moreover, they lost their 1992–93 Division 1 title and the right to play in the UEFA Champions League 1993-94, the 1993 European Super Cup and the 1993 Intercontinental Cup.

Marseille returned to the top flight in 1996 with backing from Adidas's owner Robert Louis-Dreyfus. He chose Rolland Courbis as coach, signed Fabrizio Ravanelli, Laurent Blanc, and Andreas Köpke, and Marseille finished 11th for his return. For the 1998–99 season, the team celebrated their centenary and built a team of stars: Robert Pirès, Florian Maurice, and Christophe Dugarry, culminating in a second-place finish in the French championship, behind Bordeaux and an appearance in the UEFA Cup Final in 1999, losing to Parma. Courbis left the team in November 1999 after a poor start to the season.

The closest Marseille got to another trophy was when they reached the UEFA Cup Final in 2004, impressively beating Dnipro, Internazionale, Liverpool, and Newcastle United along the way. But they were beaten in the final by newly crowned Spanish champions Valencia and once again fans were forced to continue waiting for the next trophy to come along. In 2005, Marseille succeeded in winning the Intertoto Cup, beating the likes of Lazio and Deportivo de La Coruña in doing so, and earning another shot at the UEFA Cup.

The club struggled in the 2011–12 season, going to the bottom of the Ligue 1 table after six matches. Nevertheless, Marseille rebounded, winning 3–0 against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, as well as a 3–0 success over rivals PSG in November of that year. Marseille ended 2011 with a good sequence, also qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League for the second season running.

In February 2012, Marseille embarked on 13 games without victory, but rallied to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since winning the competition in 1993. Despite an indifferent club form, OM lost to eventual finalists Bayern Munich, and slumped to an overall tenth-place finish in Ligue 1. However, the club retained the Coupe de la Ligue for the third year running, beating Lyon 1–0 in the Final.

In the summer of 2012, Deschamps resigned, and later taking on the France job. Elie Baup took over, leading the club to a surprising second-place finish in the 2012–13 season despite selling multiple key players, including Loïc Rémy, César Azpilicueta and Stéphane Mbia. Marseille returned to the Champions League, spending close to €40 million on the likes of Dimitri Payet, Florian Thauvin and Giannelli Imbula. The club were top of the table at the end of August 2013, but OM proceeded to lose all six games in Europe, suffering the ignominy of becoming the first French team, and the biggest European team to date, to have picked up zero points in a Champions League group stage.

Baup was sacked on 7 December 2013, following the 1–0 defeat to Nantes at Stade Velodrome. He was replaced on an interim basis by Jose Anigo. In Anigo's brief tenure, OM went out of the two cups, and struggled, leading to continued protests and jeers by fans. The club finished sixth in the 2014 season, missing out on an important European competition place for the first time in ten years. Anigo left the club soon after, taking on an ambassadorial/scouting role in North Africa, his first post outside of the city for more than four decades.

Modern days...

Last season had been awful, after shocking departure of Bielsa after only one game, the now ex board appointed Michel as head coach, what a disaster !!

We ended up the season getting 3 home wins and 16 draws during the whole campaign !!

As a result the fully crowded stadium that we use to see during the glory days and also Bielsa's season is now almost empty and you can easily understand why !

And if you add to all this, the fact that you lost this summer club captain Mandanda, hot prospect like Mendy, Nkoudou and established player N'Koulou without replacing them...

Will you make it to bring back your huge fan base in the stadium ?

Stadium

If you take in charge Marseille you will discover the wonderful Stade Velodrome, fully renovated in 2014, you now have a breath taking place of 67.000 fans which are going to help you to win !

It's obviously the biggest stadium available for a French Ligue 1 team so far, but thanks to Michel great work last year it's desperately empty...Now that Garcia had been hired IRL it should be a different story hopefully,

Your facilities are also excellent, and will need few improvements

L'enceinte de l'Olympique de Marseille occupe la 14e place du classement des plus beaux stades du monde.

The American Revolution !!

The cold russian days of Margarita Louis Dreyfus, ex owner, are now gone !
The deal had been sealed the 17th of October 2016
Marseille just got a new boss Mr Franck McCourt, american bilionnaire, which already came with his ideas and a project "OM CHAMPIONS PROJECT"
But what does it mean ??
New owner Franck McCourt and the new president Mr Eyraud want to make Marseille great again, the objective is to be in the top 3 yearly to play champions league football and to win it!
As a result he stated that he would make significant effort on the transfer market, which was not the case at all in recent years and most of all this summer, and pump 200M€ over the next 3 seasons, just to give you an idea of the guy :)

iconsport_win_180916_05_05_0.jpg?itok=6H
New boss and ,thanks god, ex boss together

Rivals

As you are a playing a successful club, you'll obviously have plenty of rivals, in the south of France you'll have derbies against AS Monaco and OGCN, Olympique Lyonnais, but the main thing is Paris Saint Germain !! That's the game you MUST not lose !

Would you stop our 12 games streak without a single victory against PSG in any competitions ?? :)

Kit

OM : Les maillots 2016-2017 de Marseille officialisés

Why Marseille ?

Because you now have a boss who wants to give Marseille a great boost and will give you money for that !!

Because your last victory against PSG was in 2011 !!

Because you have to stop PSG dominance !!

Because your stadium is the most beautiful in Ligue 1

Because this year's team is even worst than last year and you have to start over from scratch !!

Because you need and have to bring back another Champions League on our shelves !!

Squad analysis

One more time, you have to be patient with that team, as usual for the last season you lost some of you key players during the transfer window:

-Mandanda, legend and club captain off to Palace

-Mendy one of the hottest prospect at LB position off to Monaco

-N'Koulou, free to one of our rival Lyon...

-NKoudou, hot prospect on the left wing off to Tottenham

-Boutobba, product of Marseille academy, on a free transfer to Sevilla...

-Michy Batshuayi, top scorer last year and now new transfer record to Chelsea...

I don't even mention others departures like our loanies and others lads transferred...

We got big money for all these transfers in, but as the club was in a selling process IRL and the ex owner did not want to spend, you'll see below the mighty replacements that we have...

You will have the resources to build a very nice side, and you will notice that work is needed...

Goalkeepers

Yohann Pelé

Yohann PELE

Due to Mandanda's departure, the official back up, he's now #1 for the spot sadly...

33 y/o and running out of contract in 2018, he's only decent for that level, your starter if you don't bring someone in, otherwise sell it

Brice SAMBA

Loan after loan the lad is not confirming his potential, a Ligue 2 player at the moment, a decent back up in Ligue 1 at best, to sell as he's running out of contract in 2017

YOUTH: Unfortunately you don't have quality either in reserve and U18 to break into the first team in a few season

Recommandantions: Alban Lafont (Toulouse) if you want to keep a french core, might cost a bit // Pedrag Rajkovic (Tel-Aviv) solid and young // Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), experienced, solid and the cheapest

Defenders

Centre Backs

doria-750x410.jpg

ROLANDO

Arrived last summer from Porto, still slow, 30 y/o, out of contract in 2018

As i usually play with a back 4 he's not fitting my tactic, i would recommend selling it, if you play with 3 at the back, then i would keep it as back up

DORIA

After 2 difficult seasons on loan, the lad will for the first time this year put Marseille shirt since his arrival in 2014...

Definitely the best CB in the team, left footed, powerful with good pace, your CB for years to come!

Karim REKIK

Also a good young option at the back, he's a Doria lite i would say, as he's left footed as well, less pacey but with better passing abilities

He will provide depth at the LB spot as you only have one player able to fill the role in the first team, you can imagine how deep is your squad...

Thomas HUBOCAN

New free signing arrived this summer from Dinamo Moscou, the czech international is a solid CB with good mental stats,

As he's already 30 y/o you might consider selling him by the end of the year, good back up, left footed as well....Marseille scouts you know...

Gael ANDONIAN

Don't even know why he's in the first team, to sell, useless for Marseille standard

YOUTH Boubacar CAMARA could develop in an extraordinary CB, your hottest prospect, who could become a key player

Fullbacks

marseille-750x410.jpg

Left side

Henri BEDIMO

New ,and obviously free, transfer from Lyon, he still has plenty to offer this season although he's already 32 y/o, your starter here

Worth mentionning that our dear Henri is our ONLY natural left full back, and that lad might go away in international duties during the Africa Cup, if you don't know where to invest...

REKIK is the only one who can barely cover him in the squad

Right side

Hiroki SAKAI

A new face arriving, oh surprise, on a free from Hannover, the japanese international is an attacking FB with a good crossing ability,

Your starter, typically the kind of FB which is good in a 3-5-2

Rod FANNI

A new signing on a free, for this ex Marseille face, he's now 34 y/o, and will provide cover at this spot,

Can also help you at the CB spot, to release at the end of the season obviously,

Midfielders

Afficher l'image d'origine

Defensive

Lassana DIARRA

First name on the team sheet, a bit underrated imo, most of all regarding his passing and vision skills, in any case he will run and hold the ball for you,

To at least keep this season, he's already 31 y/o

William VAINQUEUR on loan from Roma

No buy out clause for the french DLP, a quality option especially if you want to play with 2 DM

Central

Abou DIABY

Injured at the beggining of the game (oh really ?!), even if he could have been a great CM, he's now 30, still not fit, will recommend to sell

Franck ZAMBO ANGUISSA

Not a quality player for Marseille, to offload

ZINEDINE MACHACH on loan from Toulouse

Quite balanced about that young lad (20 y/o) as the buyout is only 1M€

Could develop in an interesting player, i will take that bet

SAIF EDDINE KHAOUI

Another great find, on a free obviously, from the former Marseille team...

The young lad arriving from Tours won't make it to Marseille standard, to loan out and pray...

YOUTH Do your best to develop Maxime LOPEZ, has the potential to become a key player!

Attacking midfielders

Afficher l'image d'origine

Left side

Romain ALESSANDRINI

Injured for around 4 months, it will be tough for him to come back, sell him when you can

Rémy CABELLA

His deal is now permanent this year, the lad is your starter on the left flank and also at the #10 spot if you want to play with a playmaker,

Otherwise he's a good pacey IF with good technical skills, definitely to keep

Right side

Florian THAUVIN on loan from Newcastle

May be some magpies fan are going to laugh, but Florian is our key player up front, very capable in both wings, the best player in the current team

Glad the deal is already sealed for the next season

Bouna SARR

Arrived last summer from relegated FC Metz, to my mind he cannot start, just a back up, and as i don't rate him IRL at all, i will consider selling him right away

Strikers

Afficher l'image d'origine

Bafétimbi GOMIS on loan from Swansea, no buy out

Thanks god he's here this season !

He's not the quickest striker but will bang them in because of his good finishing, your best striker in the team

Clinton N'JIE on loan from Tottenham, no buy out

Pace only and that's almost it, typically the kind of striker i don't like, but he's your unique valid cover upfront...

Aaron LEYA ISEKA on loan from Anderlecht, no buy out

19 y/o, Michy's brother IRL, and too tender to start off with Marseille

YOUTH Porsan Clemente is still around, downgraded from last version, but your hottest prospect for the spot

Board expectations

8c0f2cfcc0ccddc8d9fb8e7215185268.png

Oh MONEY !!!

35M€ to play with at least and extra for wages !!

I would recommend aiming a CL qualification as you will be given 46M€ and 4M for the wages, and most of all, you will only have toplay the Ligue 1 and domestic cups, so it should be doable i think

Regarding transfers you need to focus on quality more than quantity as you don't play European football

I guess you understood which are your priorities now:

-Invest on a GK

-Fullbacks

-Striker

-Another attacking midfielder

-Another good DM/CM

You already have 7 players on loan so you won't be able to sign anybody else like that

But at least this year you will have fun till the start to build a good squad with the money given to compete with the other big boys and lift a trophy or two !!!

TACTICS

Here are my recommendations for the tactic who fills the team best

4-3-2-1 with DM

f83ba5f7689e05deb07a21d0ea624c03.png

Especially if you play with play with transfers disabled in the first season, this is the most logic formation to use

Good to see your OM thread back nico, and you did a nice job with the guide. As you know, the squad is REALLY awful this year. A decent challenge for some, but perhaps others will feel it's too far away from having a good base to work from even with the money apparently available (if that does indeed become reality). I agree that Gomis and the stadium are probably the bonus points. Best of luck rebuilding them :)

As last year great thread. I really enjoyed my OM save last year. Seems like a tough challenge this year.

Thanks Jogo :)

I cannot play for the moment (thanks honey ?) but I think that with the money available, especially for a french side, you should be able to build a really nice squad,

Completely agree with you, this year's existing is particularly  challenging,

Good to see you around in any case !

And I really look forward reading your different stories !

Just started a game with disabled transferts for the first window, let's see what this brings :)

Welcome!

If you don't have any major injuries, you should be able to be in the top 5 I guess,

But with the starting squad is a good challenge!

Good luck gipsy :)

Welcome on board guys !!

Should have been a shock DaveMUFC to see how generous was the ex board :)

Same for me DoubleJ, i'm still in the transfer market, and i try to create a nice balance between french youngsters and foreigners top,

Quite tough for the moment, some french sides are asking for silly money (55M€ for Sanson in Montpellier for example) so i really struggle to catch my targets,

Corchia rejects my offer and choosed Monaco instead, and a great portuguese fullback from Sampdoria rejects my contract to renew his deal with his original squad,

Anyway, still in August, and only signed a few players, and shifted some of the deadwood, btw i aimed for a Champions League spot, so i got 45M€ to spend

I will post a recap when i'm done with it

Enjoy :)

Just reached the first transfer window, after playing a bit with the budget, there is 21 Millions € to spend.

Currently sitting in 3rd position (to my amazement only 1 defeat (PSG away) but 10 draws.... PSG is first 7 points ahead.

I do not want to change the whole team quickly, so only made 4 purchases so far:

Machach - 1M €

Cheick Keita - 3M € French U21 DL

Yann M'Vila (what was he doing at Rubin to start with...) even though his contract ended in June 2017, I was not able to sign him o a free (?) so I ended up paying 3.5 M €

Moussa Dembele - 12M €

Curious to see if I ill be able to maintain 3rd place until the end of the season :)

Well done so far Gypsy !

Especially with the existing squad

I will post tactics and transfers that I made this summer but I m using 90% of the existing squad and currently in the beggining of December, sitting 4th, 4 points from #1 PSG / 2 points from Monaco and 1 from Lyon (that i trashed home 5-2)

More than challenging !! ;)

Glad you were given money to boost the squad in January, you made some nice moves here

M'vila is on my shortlist as well, tried to sign him in the summer but wages were too important, I will try again this winter

Nice to read that you perform well in any case, hope you will keep going :)

I've always wanted to do a l'OM save and this is the perfect time to start. I have transfer budgets disabled at first, but I'm able to pick up some veteran free agents to bolster the team and provide tutoring to my younger prospects. Best of all, they're relatively cheap and I have them on one-year deals: Philippe Mexes and Michael Essien, with Hector Font incoming, totaling about €45k a week between them.

OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE 2016/2017 MID SEASON UPDATE

That's time to summarize a little it what's up during these first few months of competition

The existing squad offers some decent solutions, but i decided to splash the cash on some lads whom should improve the squad

As i said before i choosed to focus on a top 3 finish (CL qualifications) to get 45M€ from the board

Transfers

8a7d29bd2b73b3e6e2bda5e21acd8fbf.png

Obviously a keeper was absolutely needed, my first choice was Lafont from Toulouse, but i was unable to meet the squad request, so i ended up buying RAJKOVIC, and i'm not dissapointed at all !

A solid solution for the present and years to come, till i'm not able to buy Lafont i will stick with him !

As DIARRA is already 31 y/o and i don't have anything good at the club, my objective was to find a suitable replacement for him, checking french Ligue 2 sides i ended up signing this young french lad (18 y/o) FUCHS for a really reasonnable fee and most of all for a nice back up option already ready for 1st team football, he will develop nicely i think

My first thought was to bring M'Vila, who will leave his club on a free, but we could not find an agreement, i might try again this winter

9f1b27837d8125f0fd54554182ab6d7a.png

Worth mentionning KUKI, brought for compensation and great player for the future

PRECIADO might be one of this year's favorite, cheap, reliable and still young, a good option upfront where we don't have quality

KOZIELLO is one of the french promising youngster raised by OGCN academy, a great central midfielder with potential to progress, good activity, passing an so on, very complete

IVAN was one of my FM favorite last year, and the young romanian is still an interesting versatile lad able to cover all the positions upfront which is still valuable, especially for that money

I guess many of you now already know ISSA DIOP, french winner of the Euro Cup this summer with Mbappé and so on, a great CB, with a huge physical potential, i would have taken Sarr from OGCN too but he joined Arsenal instead

BENTANCUR was kind of a panic buy at the end of the window as i got THAUVIN out, and KOZIELLO injured as well, still a great player, may be downgraded from last version and i was quite surprised that Juventus did not get an option on him, solid performer on his pairing with KOZIELLO

Two south americans starlet will join us in January and will be sent in Spain on loan LINCOLN and ROMERO

Regarding the departures, i did my best to offload unwanted players,

Not bad in the end,

I cancelled the loan of the young belgian striker as well, not really needed with my 1 Striker formation,

Glad i was able to send LOPEZ out of loan where he's constantly playing and most of all making huge progress

Competitions

Unfortunately not a big surprise, PSG is dominating the League,

But contenders are here battling for the others spots :)

59d6be9bbb56f35d3ea55018fc1f2157.png

It's very tight, i could may be keep on struggling with PSG but i already need to get rid of Monaco (that i beat away from home 3-1) and Lyon (win home 5-2), loss PSG away 3-1

Regarding cups i'm out of the Coupe de la Ligue, i rotate my squad too much i think, as i result that was a 1-0 loss at Velodrome against the mighty Dijon...

And the award of the most raging game of the mid season goes to...

b075f39f129003db9826e332db3370ff.png

FM raging games at its best 90+2 :)

Really hope we will at least meet the expecations, but it's a really interesting challenge so far !

Enjoy :)

ok finished season 1 and OM finished in 3rd place, 12 points away of PSG and 6 of Lyon... which means CL qualifications next season :D

I tried to bring Alisson from Roma but it was impossible so I settled for Lafont as a GK, I am sure I paid too much (20M) but it's an investment, also brought Corchia from Lille for 7M, Walace, a DM from Gremio for 15 M and brough back Mishy on loan from Chelsea.

I also sold Sarr fro 6M (could rise to 11) and Andonian for peanuts.

This year's target is to try to qualify for CL group stage, reach the final of one of the national ups and finish at least second (self imposed targets)

Well done @gipsy especially with transfers disable !

As I already managed Lafont last year, trust me he will wort it, will remain your main GK for a decade so it definitely a great buy :)

You ve been lucky with Corchia, Monaco beated signing him in my save

Glad you sold Sarr, good point here !!

Your objectives seem really realist for the upcoming season, hope you ll suceed

Btw I found PSG really much consistent in this version, they don't drop many points, so it s kind of tough

My first season is over as well

I will post a recap with a few screens asap

Good to read you in any case :)

OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE 2016/2017 END OF THE SEASON

I would not say i'm satisfied beacuse that's not the case,

I failed my personnal objectives for this first season:

-No domestic cup on our shelve (by far)

-PSG wins the Ligue 1

-Could not get a win against PSG

-I just achieved what i promised to my board but it's a fail for me as i don't have a direct access to the CL stage next season, i will have to face two legs and you will see in a further update that it could be a major issue

Final League Table

566b26ba92d46704fdf48990d9962118.png

Even if PSG was not flying, we were not even close to bring something home

My defensive records were not good enough in order to win a single tittle this year

At least i know where to focus my investments next season

My tactic was so so indeed, only grabbed tight wins and far too many loss against supposed lower teams (hello Bastia x2 )

For the next season i'm given 75M€, can get an extra 10 by adjusting, so i might be able to compete seriously for the #1 spot

Which is a bit frustrating on this save regardind previous versions is that you can't rely on a solid core and have to change almost the entire team within 2 years, could be what might happen IRL to be honest

In any case some of my transfers were really important, DIOP, BENTACUR and KOZIELLO were super signings with massive impacts

Objectives for the new season

-Get a trophy

-Win against PSG

-Be in the group stage in CL and get out of them

-Work on my tactic to be more reliable

-Invest on key players especially at the back

-Try to sell all the deadwood from the previous team

I'm already started with the 2nd season i will post when i can

Need to post a proper update, but really enjoying this save so far, although in early stages! Have invested the transfer budget into some promising players like Sebastian Haller and Ravel Morrison! Also bought a load of youth prospects...

Just a question for those who have got further than the first season, does the large money continue? Also, is it reasonably easy to obtain some of the good French youth prospects e.g. Monaco prospects Mbappe, Allan Saint Maxim, Moussa Dembele etc.?

Hey @DaveMUFC!

I already made 2 seasons, but might start again

2nd season I was given 75M€ And you can get even more (I finished 3rd in S1)

For the third one, 85M€ :D ( finished 2nd in S2) and the board wants to buy the stadium

So definitely money money and money !!!:hammer:

edit: signed Moussa Dembele for around 10M€ in the second season

Coman for less than 30M€ at the beggining of the third

So you can defintely aim for a french core squad

I am quite tempted to do a save in the French league to see if I can topple PSG, in my current save they are dominating the league each season but going out of the champions league early on. Its tempting to see if I can overhaul their league dominance and go one better.

Hi @CapaJr

I spent 45M€ given by the board (choosing CL qualification) + a few million more from my sales

I did not spend everything in the summer and kept cash and wages for the first and excellent freebies that you can have in S1

did you pay all that 45m up front or spend more by spreading the transfer amount into 3-4 years?

and do you think if i do spend more than you using the "monthly instalment" method, will i still get equally as large transfer budget as yours?

Because this OM team really do suck and needs a major upheaval,

and the challenge is that even that young wonderkid gk costs alone 29m euros, so spreading those payments  into 48months seems like the only way atm.

my take on starting with a team like Marseille is that your transfer target is season one is to bring together the best possible squad to secure CL football. That means that you don't spend 29m euro's on a talented keeper. 29m euro's will get your 5-6 players more than cable of improving your team vastly. The transfer budget that you start will, should be enough to bring in more than enough players to add to the few quality players that you already have.

when you have build the bases of your team, then is season 2-3 you can start to spend big on a couple of players that reflects the way you want to go with the team, that being superstars or highly rated/priced wonderkids

Hey @DKB and @CapaJr

I paid almost all my transfers straight with only minors installments, especially in S1 where i could not get all my main targets so it did not make sense to me to burn money on players that i could change next summer, as i result my budgets for the followings seasons are not reduced at all

Fair point DKB, you cannot spend half of your budget on a single target as the squad needs so many players to secure a CL spot, and in the upcoming years you can splash the cash on a key player in a specific role

By the way, for the GK role, you don't need to overspend for the first season, Rajkovic and Badiashille are reasonnable targets with loads of talent

I have spent nearly double the amount of my existing budget (thanks to the monthly payment method)

purchased mostly french players, Coquelin is our new star ball winner and, and he will be playing alongside Koziello.

  • Two new transfer from Toulouse will be in the starting lineup, Lafont and Diop
  • Our Brazilian left back is a free transfer, Danilo Soares is a really good bargain, very happy with this!
  • Our Portuguese right back, Pedro Pereira is one of the most ambitious transfers alongside Lafont- although their price tags are really heavy, both have immense potential, and will only improve their current ability.
  • I also added great young french backup players such as Upamecano, Kamara, Fuchs and Malang Sarr they'll provide excellent cover for the first team
  • I will also keep our own youngsters Maxime Lopez and Porsan Clemente and will use them throughout the season.
  • I have the French youth of Malang Sarr/Upamecano as our potential future central defenders.
  • When i think about the second season and the potential improvements, a starting striker to replace Gomis and a central midfielder to replace Vainqueur will be a must, but other than those two, the remaining transfers will probably be for the bench, we already have created such a strong core for the future, i think not so much left to improve!
  • Before the season starts, incoming transfer fee amount will increase to 15m or so. (players like Hubocan and Sarr will be shipped out too)

Our average squad age is 22, what a really young team with full of potential!

I'm still in 29th of June so i have several days before i choose my current target, maybe i'll be realistic with this young team and choose europa league depending on the differences of the transfer budget.

(i started the game 4th of June)

Wow, well basically you have gathered almost all the big hot current youngster and hot prospect names of Ligue 1 in one team. Sounds almost a bit too easy. I guess you'll be dominating the league easily in a few years. ;)

I still have a few more in mind for new season

Vincent Marchetti from Nancy

Almamy Toure & Mbappe & Lemar from Monaco

I don't think i'll ever dominate easily tbh, PSG is creating such a crazy team that they'll always pose a threat.

I tried to lure Bakayoko from Monaco into my current Premier League save, but they wanted €100m. That was a tiny, tiny bit too much for me...

Yeah, same for Mbappe, both in my current and at my Everton save (i'm starting my 4th season) they never ever settle anything less than crazy amounts like that.

But i'll try until i got him :brock:

I tried to get Bakayoko as well, impossible (3rd season on my first save)

on the other hand Almamy Toure can be bought at the start of S2 for a little bit less than 20M€

Btw what a hot french core squad @CapaJr :D

curious to see how much you will have to spend in S2 with all these installments

There is currently  so many youngsters in my team with 5 star potential (4+1 dark), its unbelievable ! :D

the pre existing ones are especially encouraging, Porsan-Clemente and Boubacar Kamara have full potential, with potentially 5 stars, Maxime Lopez, Marchadier, Gambor also has 4 1/2 star potential and hopefully will develop into first team players.

I'm guessing i will only have 20m euro at most for the next transfer season- but don't really care, i already created the core i wanted and all i need now is TIME TIME TIME, to gel & develop !!!

btw, Ocampos will be returning next season anyway, so he'll be a whole new transfer just by himself.

Really hopeful about this save

@CapaJr hey out of curiosity why start in June? Any advantages/disadvantages?

No particular reason, i have been doing that for many years now, always start a month earlier and get my transfer negotiations going, want to take my time and unsettle players and try to buy them for as little value as possible.

I somehow feel it helps the team to gel quicker too, but thats just me!

after spending something like 100m euro in the first transfer window, i just reached mid november and about to play my 12th game of the season.

and GUESS WHAT? the board just pumped in another 22m euro's to my depleted transfer budget :D

so i think no, no matter how much you spend, this marseille board doesn't seem to care :D

Havent reached that far yet, i'm at first season & mid november playing my 12th league game atm.

however, whats still surprising is that they still pumped in another 20m after i spend 100m in summer!

QUICK QUESTION: what really happens if you don't succeed your league objective and achieve a top3 spot?

Because the team that i have built is really young and inexperienced, it looks like its gonna be almost impossible this season for them to achieve that goal tbh

will i get kicked out?

I started over a new save for 17.2

Spent all my transfer budget in S1 (45M€), mostly straight transfers, almost no installments, finished third and won Coupe de la Ligue and was given 91M€ for S2 so not bad at all :D

@CapaJr i guess you might be sacked if you're really far away from your objective, should be ok if you achieved top5 I imagine

Is Koziello really worth that much money? My scout gives him only 3* now and 3* + black star for the future..

In my first save Koziello had a 5 star rating, then drops to 4.5 during my season but was still well improving his stats and most of all performed very well

In my second save he was given 3.5 star, he might have a random pa from games to games

Hey guys, what's schedule like first season?

When does League Cup and French Cup start for OM and they played mid week or weekend?

Just want to know if need to have deep squad or not. Haven't done France save much.

Hi Quinby

Coupe de la Ligue start in late December and Coupe de France in January

Before that you will have 1 game per week

The most difficult month is January if you play all the competitions seriously

In my game he is 3.5 star + 1.5 dark star.

He might not proceed to be a world star but think about this though- you have no core at all in this team- and that includes solid bench alternatives too.

At worst case, homegrown Koziello would provide that solid bench alternative for you.

END OF S1 UPDATE:

After spending more than 100m euro's, we had a disappointing first season in the league and finished 6th.

(this team simply had no core players what so ever, so its basically "starting from scratch" kind of a deal)

this final outcome to our first season however wasn't a shock because nearly all my transfers were for players under the age of 20 and i was just thinking about the future by those investments..

time will eventually reward us

btw, speaking of rewards, we were the finalist in coupe de la ligue, knocked out against PSG, but we won the french cup by knocking out Monaco :applause:

so our performances in those 2 domestic cups were truly awesome, however our biggest obstacle this season was our unstable form, we were unbelievably inconsistent!

Even though we had spent over 100m euro's, it looks like this Marseille board doesn't even care

We have undersoil heating investment being made + both youth and senior training camps are being updated+ 70m euros budget (when adjusted with wage)
