From Wikipedia, possibly not the best role model : James Curran Baxter, (September 29, 1939 – April 14, 2001), was a Scottish football (soccer) player.Born in Hill of Beath, Fife, he started his career at Raith Rovers F.C. before moving to boyhood heroes Rangers F.C. for a Scottish record transfer fee £17,500 aged 20 in 1960. He briefly returned to Rangers in 1969 before retiring from football in 1970 aged only 30. He also won 34 caps for Scotland. After a sensational performance, Baxter infamously began playing "keepie uppie" or ball juggling during the match in an effort to torment the opposition. As Scotland were the first team to beat England after the 1966 World Cup, the Tartan Army proclaimed themselves world champions. Baxter himself [1] regarded his performance in the 1963 defeat of England at Wembley as superior to the '67 game. Scotland played most of the game with 10 men as Eric Caldow's leg was broken in a tackle early in the game, and in the early '60's there were no substitutes. Remarkably, Baxter scored Scotland's first after winning a tackle. He scored the second from a penalty. Caldow was the designated penalty taker, and Baxter stated in 2001 that he "had never taken a penalty in my life before". Once, later in his life, asked if having been paid the huge sums of money footballers in later decades received would have made a difference to his lifestyle, he famously replied, "Definitely. I'd have spent £50,000 a week at the bookies instead of £100." Despite his off-pitch behaviour of womanizing, frequently getting drunk and gambling he is remembered as one of the greatest Scottish players of all time and there is much surprise that he won only 34 caps. Baxter lost a long battle against cancer when he died April 2001. The Tartan Army unsuccessfully attempted to get the new Wembley footbridge named after him just to annoy the English, with many Scots flooding a poll held by radio station Five Live. Tinkering in the transfer market to fine-tune a good team looks as follows: Transfers The signing I am most proud of is my new assistant manager: Asst. Manager He's young, and seems of excellent quality for a non-league football side. I also replaced my physio (my new one has physio. stat of 19) and tied my scouts (JCA/JPA of 11/17 and 15/16) to long-term deals... here's to hoping I can look outside of England soon! I also had to replace my fitness coach, who was poached by Sheff. Wed. So I'm now delighted with my backroom staff, particularly as most are on F/T contracts now, as are all the first team squad, so I can look forward, hopefully, to good player progression. Club Info I have a very young average age... my oldest player (Trent McClenahan) is only 25, so it's all looking good! Team Report My assistant seems to think a good season is ahead, and I agree! I have decided this season to pull my wingers back from AM to regular M... this hopefully to help nip the goals conceded problem, which I believe cost us promotion last season, in the bud. Squad So, that's how the squad looks, just won my first game 3-1 at home to Torquay, so hopefully we can go one better than last season! spankie Posted November 26, 2007 Share Posted November 26, 2007 I didn't fancy my Hitchin's chances against Burnley who managed to get into the Premier League, after all we're only League 1. The match was very hard and going 2-0 down after 26 minutes I felt that we were doomed. We pulled 1 back through Daniel Hutchins but just a few minutes before half time Brouwer got his hattrick. About halfway through the second half James Hayter got onyl his second goal since joining in the transfer window. Then Peter Bore got a late injury time equaliser to take it to a replay. 3rd round result The only thing I expected to get out of the replay was a record for gate recepts. But the team proved me wrong and James Hayter scored the only goal in the second half. Replay result That has earned us another bumper payout with Reading coming down to Top Field. Morel plays a big part, once your players are depressed it seams nigh on impossible to turn it around, for example my last 5 games have all been 0-0, despite having some great strikes they are all as miserable as sin. League Table The table flatters us as it was very close going into the last few games, but thankfully we managed to win our last three Squad We have a good squad going into next season, but we went way over our wage budget, so I'm going to have a mass clearout. Star players include Lee McEvilly, James Smith, Ryan Williams and Michael Roddy. Hopefully we'll be able to do well next season, with Farsley, Thurrock and Chelsmford joining us in the Blue Square Premier. Grimsby and Shrewsbury also getting relegated from League Two. We came back from that came to snatch a 2-1 win at Crawley on the Monday, on the Wednesday we crushed a Darryl Knights inspired Torquay 4-1 thanks to two late goals. (Anyone actually signed Knights this time around, or any of the previous challenge youngsters - Younghusband, Sherringham etc), we then beat Weymouth 3-2 thanks to two free-kicks one from each of my full-backs. My chairman has actually been very good about not interfering; he didn't accept Liverpool's crazy £20,000,000 bid for my left back for me and let me reject a £23,000,000 bid for Rumen Luleyski. I got liverpool to offer 2.5m + a fantastic striker i have been after for a fair few years, which i turned down for some reason unbeknown to me. Dons Posted November 26, 2007 Share Posted November 26, 2007 Tiverton 09-10 Following the previous years success at finishing in the playoffs, it was with great excitement to start the next season. From Plymouth i once again got goalie Lloyd Saxton and Martin Watts. Also managed to get Joe Mason who turned out to be my top striker with 30 goals. Finished the season as number 2 and feared the playoffs would be a rehappening from last season. Battling the playoffs semifinal with Bromley. Leg1 was a tremendous match, with the final score 3-2 to unfortunately. Leg2 was more joyful and won 2-1 at home. In the final we met Woking. Missing a penalty, scoring on a penalty and woking having 1 goal dissalowed the final score was 2-1 and in their second season Tiverton managed to get promoted! As well this season with no cash to spend, it was a hunt for bargains and spend alot of time hunting down the seemingly good players. Mark Pugh was by far the only "star" i managed to get, but he also played a very good season with 7 goals and 13 assists. Cup run was actually pretty good. Managed to accomplish all the set goals for the team. FA - 2nd rnd qual (Blyth), 3rd rnd qual (Taunton town), 4th rnd qual (Workingtown) 4th rnd qual replay, 1st rnd (Salisbury), 2nd rnd (Millwall) we were lucky to draw 1-1 in the 89th min. 2nd rnd replay. FAT - 3rd rnd qual (Bishop's Storford), 3rd rnd qual replay, 1st rnd (Boston) SSS - 2nd rnd qual (St. Albans), 3rd rnd qual (Hayed and Yeading) lost in overtime, after having a goal ruled out and a man sent off. Also lost 2 players to injury that match. All in all a good season. Training facilities still in bad shape, and board refusing to invest.
