Depends really.

I don't see any point in paying that much more for the second one.

The other one, once in stock, may be worth it if you'll be doing anything else which requires a dedicated graphics card (other games primarily).

FM doesn't need a dedicated graphics card, so if FM is the only game you play you may be hard pushed to justify paying an extra £300.

But, the choice is absolutely yours! :)

I'd go with the last one (https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3039061) - it has the best processor of all the ones you linked, 8GB RAM, an SSD hard drive as well as a larger 1TB HDD, and a decent dedicated graphics card.

Hi,

Looking to get a new laptop, FM is the only game I play and I don't do too much else on my laptop as I have a separate work laptop.

Looking at spending around £600-700 - I have had a brief look around and I think I like the ASUS TUF FX505, but I'm not really a techy person so any help would be really appreciated.

Thank you

Very much appreciated. Helpfully the one I decided on that we discussed us out if stock until at least the weekend.

I can't work out the difference between that and the 13.3" screen but I'm tempted to wait until the Ryzen 15 is back in stock...

They appear identical, aside from the screen size, and understandably the one with the larger screen has a worse battery life (which may or not be a factor depending on whether you ever use it unplugged or not).

Hi don’t know if this is the right place to post but if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

i need a laptop for under roughly £300 to run football manager 2020 really well. Is this possible? The sole reason for the laptop is to play the game will not be used for anything else so I don’t care if it can’t do anything other than work great for FM.

I currently have a laptop I’m using for it but it’s too slow even to watch replays..

thanks

Hi guys.

I am just wondering whether this laptop I have will run fm20 easily?

Really liking the look of the new features, especially after seeing videos on YouTube, so will be purchasing when it’s on sale, if my laptop is good enough.

I normally play all leagues in England and Scotland, and the top two leagues in France, Italy, Germany and Holland, on a medium database.

For £300, and run it really well? No, unless you're buying a refurbished or second hand laptop, to run the game well you're looking at double your budget.

If you'd be able to push the budget to £630, you could get this beauty, which would fairly easily handle 3D and more than just a few leagues if you wanted a bigger save - https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1690000

Otherwise, if £600 is a hard border, these might suit: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9174243

The first one is a fairly decent step up for only £30 extra though.

The second one is the one I'd go for - the processor is probably slightly better in the first one, but the second one has 1080p resolution which makes a huge difference with FM in my opinion.  If I had to choose, I'd take the potential (slight) hit in processing speeds for the better display.  I've played FM in both 1080p and 1366x768, and personally think it's a much better experience with the higher resolution due to the lower resolution struggling to fit everything you need on the screen.

Either will run FM though.

Of those, I'd actually go for the cheaper one.  The cheaper one has an 8th gen i3 processor, where as the other one has a 7th gen i5.  The benchmarking sites suggest the new i3 is slightly better with its single core performance, although the base clock speed is lower.

Truth be told, there is very little in it and there may well be some benefits in going for the i5 one that I'm unaware of.

But if I was choosing between those two, I would go for the model with the i3 in this case.

Both will run FM with the with the configuration you've stated with no trouble.

I'm not sure how the Intel Optane thing works - it seems to be suggesting that it uses some of the storage space like RAM.  Having never used it myself and knowing very little about it, I don't feel I can answer about which one is better.

Either of these will run FM quite nicely, however I don't feel I can suggest one over the other as I don't know enough about Octane memory.   Maybe someone else here knows something about it?

What I can tell you with confidence though is the cheaper one has the better CPU and also appears to have a slightly better GPU as well.

Hi guys, really informative thread and learned a lot reading through it all, my laptop is 7 years old so im having an upgrade just in time for fm20.

My budget is about £700 although i would be willing to go to higher, i always play with a large database with about 5/6 leagues loaded.

I have done my own research already and have narrowed it down to the 3 linked below:

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3039061

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1690000

https://www.box.co.uk/FX504GD-E41275T-ASUS-TUF-FX504GD-E41275T_2458989.html

I would like to know which one you would recommend out of these or give me a better suggestion for around my price range, i would be willing to go to an absolute limit of £850 for a laptop that is substantially better.

Thank you

This one is very similar spec to the laptop I currently use (same CPU and amount of RAM as mine), which runs FM19 pretty quickly and with more leagues than you've mentioned.  In fact, it should be quicker than mine as it uses SSD rather than a Hard Drive.

Any of those will run FM well.

The Argos ones have the better CPU and GPU, but the one at Box runs on SSD which will reap some overall performance benefits (but I'm not sure how much it will make up with regards to the processor).

I think the key consideration will need to be what else you'll use the laptop for and how much storage space you need.

Personally, if I had to pick one of the three myself, I'd probably go for the £699.00 one from Argos.

Hi,

Looking to upgrade from my ageing MacBook to a new laptop ready for FM20. My MacBook has been on its last legs for the last few seasons and is now just getting too hot/slow to even run on 2d even with a fan mat.

PCWorld have offered me a £160 voucher for it as trade in which I'm going to accept, therefore I'm limited to only buying from them. Don't want another Macbook, so going for windows, especially as the laptop will only be used for FM. Have a budget of £500 (after the voucher) and want to get an SSD (128gb is plenty) and 8gb RAM. Therefore my main question is whether I'd see a big difference between an I3 or I5 processor. I only play with 3-4 leagues loaded so it shouldn't be too processor intensive. I'd also like to play in 3d but this isn't hugely important. I've listed below the ones that I'm looking at from PC world. Any advice on which is best or others that they sell there?

I couldn’t agree more. I have spend every evening of the last month researching the market and £600+ is what is needed to get a gaming laptop to run FM well.

The first link to Argos is the best I had also found on the market, I’m just holding out until Black Friday to see if it goes in.

A tech man once told me, buy cheap and buy twice and it’s so true. Either spend £600+ or not at all in my view.

I'm just putting some feelers out at this point. My budget is probably £600 max.

For a little context, my current laptop is bearable running say 5 or 6 leagues for 5 or 6 seasons before the processing just grinds to a halt. I play mainly in 2D because it doesn't handle the 3D engine very well.

What I'd like is a machine capable of handling 4 or 5 nations with all leagues loaded, so I can do some journeyman saves or be able to play on past 5 or 6 seasons in general without it becoming a grind and for the 3D engine to be at least smooth and watchable. I'll still probably play the majority in 2D but highlights and the odd 3D game would be nice, but the processing speed for multiple nations/leagues is of more importance to me.

I don't mind going down the route of a reconditioned machine if it means more bang for my buck but I'm looking for some recommendations in this price range to keep an eye on for Black Friday.

EDIT: And anything in the £400 range as that might be more realistic.

Thanks in advance guys.

I'd go for either the Ryzen 5, or i3.  Either will work fine for FM.  Both seem quite similar - it looks like the Ryzen 5 has better multi-core performance overall, but the i3 scores a bit better on the single-core performance (which I believe is the bigger factor for FM), but there doesn't seem to be much in it.

One thing I do know, is the Ryzen 5 does seem to have better integrated graphics than the intels, but that is less of an issue for FM generally (unless you want to play 3D at the higher settings, then you may see a difference there - although I couldn't tell you how much).

My laptop has the same Ryzen 5 CPU as the Amazon one, and runs FM19 very well with 8 nations loaded with all divisions (England, Scotland, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium).

I've not tested it with FM20 yet as it's been off for repair, but I have no reason to think that would be any different.

Hi,

I am currently playing fm18 on my surface pro 4, still runs great and I'm in my 20th season with a large database and play on 3d. I will be getting fm20 and I'm thinking of ugrading and buying the surface laptop 2 or 3.

Anyone got any experience on playing FM on the surface laptops? I'm looking at getting the i5, 8gb version. The only downside I can see is they have dedicated graphics cards. Currently the 3d works dine on my pro 4 dedicated graphics card but will 20 be ok? The laptop will only be for FM and nothing else and will need to be suitable for the next few years of fm.

The graphic cards on these laptops are too poor to run FM well. They will do the job, but you will have to adjust you expectations on game speed. To run FM well, you need to be looking at at least £600 plus on a gaming laptop.

For around £600 you’d get something around an 8GB RAM, GTX 1050 graphics card and an 8th or 9th gen intel processor

This advice couldn't be any more wrong.

You don't need a dedicated graphics card at all.

You need a reasonable CPU and ideally at least 8GB RAM. The only thing the graphics card will change is what quality you can play the 3D match engine. And even then, I've got a laptop with a Ryzen 5 2500U and the integrated graphics on that handled the 3D match engine on FM19 at high settings.

Anyone using Nvidia MP250 as graphic card?

Experience?

I like having around 30.000 players loaded and 2 or 3 playable leagues. Dont use 3D.

Then you don't need to worry about what GPU your computer has.  Focus on the CPU and having at least 8GB RAM.
