FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

That actually makes perfect sense. I was wondering why the laptop with their own chip was that much cheaper, but you have a point.

Still need more evidence of its performance and graphics. And it would be interesting to see how it could perform without running through emulation.

Well the games would have to be optimised for the chip - so at the moment it runs through Rosetta 2 to emulate the x86 architecture of the intel chips.
Until FM is optimised for the chip it can only be emulated. But mostly people are having a positive experience with this.

The benchmark thread is pretty solid - and the Mac with the M1 chip was tested there. And we're waiting for others to join in and find out more about it, but until people benchmark it there's not much we can say other than - maybe! But I am coloured IMPRESSED by the performance in the benchmark thread!

Maybe @craiigman can fill us in on how he's getting on with the new Mac?

And it's scary - but the list of processors in the top to bottom of the benchmark almost identically match the list on https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html in order.

It's uncanny!

So you can take both lists as a correlation of correct information, at least I do.

For that price, I'd go for this instead:

https://www.box.co.uk/82B50042UK-Lenovo-Legion-5-15_2938438.html

You get a better processor (you generally want to avoid processors with a U suffix, with some exceptions, as this means ultra low power, so liable for throttling), and a better graphics card.

However, if the 256GB storage is too stingy, then this one with 512GB would be my next suggestion: https://www.box.co.uk/1L6E9EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-dk1005na_2958256.html.   Again, better CPU than the one you linked - not quite as strong as the one above, but still an excellent choice.

Hey man,

Thanks for the feedback, I hugely appreciate it.

I had looked at the Lenovo L340 that you've been recommending a lot, but one thing I should have mentioned is I need something I can take from meeting to meeting to meeting without anyone noticing I'm stealthily playing FM21 instead of making notes or concentrating on a tedious PowerPoint presentation. Sadly, this kind of rules out most Gaming Laptops as they tend to look like a Spaceship / Lovecraftian Horror Creature / Rave - all shiny green lights and aerodynamic laser fins without any real portability.

Would the Zenbook 14 still suffice?

I mean, if it's a no then that's absolutely fine. I'll 100% sacrifice my actual career for my virtual career; Dover Athletic won't get themselves promoted. Trust me.

Hi all,

Which laptop would you recommend for Football Manager? The Lenovo one has a better CPU, however the Acer Nitro 5 has better graphics. They are both a similar price, so I’d just like to know which one would be best for playing FM at the max settings (10 leagues, large player database and 3D).

I'd avoid that one specifically to be on the safe side because of the base clock speed being 1.6GHZ, which is below the recommended 1.8Ghz for FM21.

Looking at the pictures of the Lenovo though, I don't see that it looks like your normal gaming laptop though - it doesn't seem to have all the usual bells and whistles like the bright lights and stuff, at least that I can tell from the images!

Edit: This one specifically: https://www.box.co.uk/82B50042UK-Lenovo-Legion-5-15_2938438.html

They both have the same CPU, so they're identical in that regard.

Both will play FM pretty much identically, as the GTX 1050 is ample for FM.  However, an extra £30 for the more recent graphics card isn't a bad idea so out of the two I'd probably go for the one at Currys.

Just my point, it could be seriously interesting to see how it performs IF it didn’t have to emulate the intel chips.

I’ve seen the benchmark and I was impressed as well. I was waiting on Craiigmans post to see whether it would run before I ordered the MacBook. I’ve tried the A Benchmark on my MBP from 2014, and it was twice as fast. I’m really looking forward to receiving it!

Already made a post about how the game runs and what settings used, I have also shared this link on the forums showing other games:

There is a link in the thread to the full spreadsheet.

What other games are you thinking of playing, if any?

The graphics card in that is roughly in line with a Geforce 1650 Super, which is ample for FM but you may have to turn some settings down on AAA games if you're thinking of those too.

I will mainly be playing FM.

I am looking at these, which would be best recommended?

Hi. Looking at this Huawei laptop to use solely for FM21.

Thoughts on this one? Or reccommed better in £500-£600 price range? Trying to find 8GB RAM, and SSD but am struggling with the processor comparisons!

https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/laptops/matebook-d-15-amd/buy/?skucode=80440114010001001

Would like to be playing large database with upto 10 leagues.

Thanks!

NO DEDICATED GPU

Mac with the M1 chip does really well in benchmarking - it's 13 inch screen so may not be for you
https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/apple-13-3-macbook-air-with-retina-display-2020-256-gb-ssd-space-grey-10216298-pdt.html

Windows 14 inch screen - and on par with the Mac I'd say - plus has more RAM
Also touchscreen - not sure that's important for you -
https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/huawei-matebook-14-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-512-gb-ssd-grey-10215083-pdt.html

Windows - 14 inch - good laptop - slightly lesser than the 2 above
https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/huawei-matebook-14-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-grey-10215081-pdt.html

DEDICATED GPU - Better if you're into other games too

Windows
Again - this is on Par with the Mac - I'd say - and if you play other games and prefer
https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-creator-5i-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i5-256-gb-ssd-moss-green-10208462-pdt.html

This is cheaper and a slightly weaker processor - and graphics card is slightly weaker
https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-7-a715-74g-15-6-intel-core-i5-laptop-512-gb-ssd-black-10194242-pdt.html

Hello Smurf, thanks!! I’m a bit sceptical about the Mac as it’s been said on here that they aren’t the best for FM.

Also Sorry to be a pain! But can you find me a laptop more suited for ‘gaming’ I like the huawei but touchscreen isn’t what I’m looking for :)

Obviously price doesn’t determine the performance of a laptop but my budget is a grand because I want the best for my money.Hope that makes sense and you can help further !

I already found all the laptops on Currys suitable for FM and categorised them for you. Thats it. The mac would be fine. Dont know why you think that

That doesn't bring up any computers, just a blank comparison page.  Think you'd be best just giving a link to the product page for each one you're interested in.

Think maybe he was referring to the previous Macs, as we were both pretty scathing of the ones before the M1 chip came out.

Well basically curry’s have a selection of ‘Gaming’ laptops with filters like ‘Essential’’ ‘Enthusiast’ ‘Serious’ ‘Pro’

None of the laptops you recommend were in these fields so I was a bit confused :)

Hi guys

Any thoughts on this laptop? I’m willing to spend up to £550ish for a laptop I’d only really be using for FM. I typically run only 4 leagues on a large database.

I'd choose this over it - better CPU and a bit cheaper as a bonus.

You're welcome to buy anything you like.  These threads have been going for years. I ran the last one for over 100 pages, with help. I never recall anyone saying they were ever disappointed.

We put a lot into these posts, hours of research in our own time.

This all started for me on 2011, I spent€900 on a subpar laptop that didnt run FM well at all.

9 years later, I am still here, helping people avoid costly mistakes.

I often look at the computers in Currys and see really bad specd computers at the higest price points. I've heard their expert staff give bad advice to people who know nothing about computers.

Go ahead,  buy whatever you think is good.

I’ll listen to your decisions because as Kev said theirs a lot of marketing etc. going on.

I wish you both all the best !!

At then end of the day as per opening post we are not IT professionals. But the initial post is worked on with the Moderators in the background. Ive gone to Neil Brock, Edl, FrazT for their input.

It is pretty much built with FM users in mind. FM is not like any other game, it is processor intensive. So we focus on the high end processors for value for money.

GPU and Ram are next in no particular order.

We are doing our best to serve those who dont know what to buy, and those who get caught up in the marketing side of buying, and those lost in the jargon of it all.

Hey guys!

I have this set up:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz   3.41 GHz
Installed RAM: 16,0 GB (15,9 GB usable) 2400MHz DDR4
GPU: SAPPHIRE AMD RADEON R7 370 VAPOR-X OC 4GB GDDR5 PCI-E

Motherboard: Z170A TOMAHAWK (MS-7970)

Recently (about 2-3 months) my PC had a meltdown. The technician said I need both a motherboard and a GPU. Fact is that it works fine with the onboard graphics card (Intel HD Graphics 530) but the quality of gaming is poor. Even FM21 says that graphic quality is low. I also play League Of Legends and some more demanding games like NBA2k series.

I have a budget of around 300 euros. Any ideas for both motherboard and GPU. Do not want to change CPU as I think it is still fine. Happily waiting to hear your thoughts!

Good morning guys,

Spent many hours last night searching the Internet and these pages! If you could recommend the best performing one out of these 4 would be much appreciated. Main use FM but may dip into other games, age of empire etc.

Either of the ones Smurf listed would be miles ahead of this one.

Kevhamster / Smurf,

I am looking for a laptop around the £500 - £700 range, that will handle FM easily enough (obviously) but also be suitable for the kids' homework / general browsing and perhaps Franchise Hockey Manager or Out of the Park Baseball in the short term.

Ideally from Currys, AO or similar as I can get some decent cashback offers from them. But generally whatever you think's best.

I had thought of the following as a token offering to the conversation with my limited knowledge of these things.

You guys do a fantastic job, thank you so much in advance.

Something with this sort of spec would be great.

There may be others which are cheaper, but I'm on my mobile and the AO site isn't great on mobile.  I looked at Currys but they seem to be struggling for stock at the moment.

Both are good but I'd go for the £749.99 Lenovo. Better CPU and a stronger graphics card as well. The graphics card in the Acer is absolutely fine for FM that said, and the CPU is decent too.

Help pls tech folk...

Looking to pick up a new laptop (obviously) for FM21 ... this would be main usage. Also maybe a bit of lightweight photo editing, and the standard netflix/spotify/MS Office interaction.

FM tends to be 7/8 nations open with a large database and would like reasonable graphics if possible for my budget.

Budget would be £650/750max if I can get away with it.

Fire away with recommendations pls folks.

Cheers.

The experts can confirm but this could be leading the way!

Hey guys,

Firstly, thanks for all the hard work so far. This thread has really helped me in my search for a new laptop. I think I've narrowed it down to this HP one on Box, but but I have a slight hesitation as to whether I'd want a bit more punch on the GPU.

I've also found this Lenovo (price is £100 lower on Overclockers), which whilst more than I'd originally intended does appear to hit each of the desired components.

Basically, is the extra GPU worth the extra cash, or is the HP perfectly up to scratch and is the switch from the AMD to Intel worth it to achieve it. For what it's worth I mainly also play Civ XI and racing sims, which is the main factor the GPU.

Is that Lenovo worth an extra £600 than the one posted above for what you want?

Which racing sims specifically? For example, Project Cars 3 requires a much meatier graphics card than Assetto Corsa.

Assetto Corsa, ACC, Automobilista 2. There is an element of trying to future proof myself too, but it might be the HP does that sufficiently.

It's a fair point. It'd be £500 at the price I could get it, so I guess it's a question of longevity really. Is the extra spec going to future proof enough that I'm not needing to upgrade as soon, thus eliminating the need for an earlier upgrade later.

What's your budget?  Automobilista is very demanding looking at the system requirements, so if you're looking at a laptop it's probably going to be a sizeable chunk of cash to get ideal performance.
