New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

thanks Smurf.

i generally dont play 3D matches but was thinking of getting a laptop with a dedicated graphics card instead of integrated. Current laptop is a couple of years old and has 8gb ram and an i5 processor but it only runs at 1.7ghz

Because U processors are not as good as processors with HQ.

U stands for Ultra low voltage - and they are designed to "underclock" so that they use less power - which is at the expense of performance.

Where a processor with HQ - stands for High Performance Graphics, Quad Core.  Which are designed to be high performance, and it's a quad core processor.

HQ is the most common you'll see on budget computers under £1000 - and you can go up the way in the terms of letters:

H - high performance

HK - high performance unlocked

T - Optimised

K - Unlocked.

U processors are lower end

Hi there @Smurf, any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

i recently bought a new ipad with kind of the sole purpose to play FM on, knowing that the FMT is slightly watered down from the full fat game.

However, the fact that you can only load 3 playable leagues really takes away the joy for me as i like to run quite a few leagues in different countries to really feel immersed in the game world.

The other reason is due to limited time on my hands, i mainly will only be able to play the game to and from work on the train, hence looking at a light and smaller sized device to play on.

what would you recommend as a fairly compact and light sized laptop but for the sole purpose of running a fast FM game. i'm not over fussed about watching in 3D so happy to compromise on graphic card.

Given that this will simply be bought for FM then as always looking at best price too.

any thoughts?

thanks

thanks for that.

felt the Lenovo having 12GB of ram was a plus

For FM it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Money better spent on better processor and better graphics card.

RAM is relatively cheap and easy to update - you won't be able to update processor and graphics card.

So best to get more RAM if you need it. But you won't.

I'm afraid that lightweight and long battery life do not come cheap

On first glance this is stonking good value for money considering what you want to do!

On second glance - it's expensive.

If you want to go just lightweight - and not worried on battery life (when not plugged in)

Hey guys can anyone tell me if this will be any good for fm? I normally play 2d but would maybe be interested in 3D depending on graphics (no idea if this laptop is good graphics or not)

also wont require loss of leagues maybe Spain Italy england

Very difficult to find any laptops worthy for Football Manager.

This would be excellent

Same price - slightly lower spec

Great Thread!  I currently am running Dual-Cpu's (Xeon x5570's) with 4 cores and 8 threads.  In the game on the "Game Status" screen under Number of Processors it say's 16 Processors.  So i'm assuming FM17 is recognizing both my cpu's.  Now I love to play my FM with the max player database (300,00+ players) and I would love to improve the performace.  So am I correct in saying that upgrading from 4 core processors to 6 core processors should easily improve my FM's processing speed?

Hi @Smurfand anyone else in the know...

I've been keeping an eye on this thread to pick up some tips so as to not make similar mistakes that I made last time.

I think I want an i7 processor, (better than an i5), and I also want HQ rather than anything else. I generally play a single very long-term save, but previously have limited myself to a small number of leagues and feel that with a proper laptop I would like to expand this.

I like to watch highlights on 3d.

I've had a look and come up with this one.

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ZX553VD-DM969T-ASUS-Gaming-ZX553VD-DM969T_2246201.html

Something that has caught my eye is that it mentions, (I think), that it has been upgraded to 8GB RAM, (suggesting that it wasn't originally). Is this going to cause me a problem later on down the line?

Something else that I noticed is that the battery life is only listed as 3-4 hours, (up to 4 hours with battery management). This seems low to me but is it just a case of money talks with regards to battery life?

Something else I have seen mentioned by others elsewhere is the benefit of a SSD (solid state drive) over a Hard Drive and I notice this doesn't have a SSD.

I appreciate that I can't have everything I want for the money I am willing to pay, but I'm not sure what is worth trading and what is a must.

If you had asked me a few months how much I was willing to pay I would have probably said £600, but I don't think I can get what I want for that so would be willing to go to £800.

Any advice would be appreciated.

[Edit]

You see this is the sort of thing I mean.

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.G66EK.004-Acer-Aspire-V15-in-Black_2095447.html

This laptop, (linked by @Smurfabove) is cheaper, and it has a SSD. My limited understanding is that there are fewer longer-term reliability issues with a SSD over a HDD, but is it that big a deal?

The reason this 2nd laptop is cheaper is because of the downgrade in processor, (i5-6300HQ compared to i7-7700HQ), but that while the processor is poorer, the battery life is better, (I'm guessing because the processor is demanding less from it), with 7-8 hours life compared to 3-4 hours previously.

It seems that it's a trade-off between real top end, (at least within this price range), processor speed and a little more of everything else.

I'm now thinking that the £650 model might actually suit my purposes better than the £780 model, AND be £130 cheaper.

That's the theory for sure.

The faster the processor, the more cores/threads - the faster the game will be.

To be clear - all computers can load all leagues/divisions and all the database etc. - it's just the speed that the game progresses suffers the weaker the specs of the computer get.

I wouldn't be comfortable offering you a suggestion based on £400 it's just too low to get what you want - namely a dedicated graphics card for the 3D matches.

I did see this one on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Precision-M3510-15-6-Business-Laptop-i7-6820HQ-Quad-Core-32GB-500GB-HD/302478803662

I wouldn't normally suggest using eBay - usually if it's too good to  be true it is.

You'd be much better off saving a bit more and getting something like this

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2066567.html

I know it's 200 quid over your original budget - but I wouldn't buy from eBay - I looked through about 20 websites and the way they filter products is very confusing (even for me :)

Firstly, just because it's an i7 it doesn't mean it's better than an i5.  An  i5-8600K  would be amazingly better than a i7-5500U

But generally - you're absolutely right.

It's pretty good laptop -

Upgraded to 8gb RAM - that maybe so - and thankfully it is 8GB - I woudln't recommend anything less than 8gb RAM. There's no problem here

SSD - it's not overly important for FM - but who knows how FM 2023 will look and feel and perhaps having an SSD will be of benefit then. However and SSD can signifcantly improve a computer performance overall.

Battery life - if you're not using it as a desktop replacement (plugged in all the time) then it will be an issue.

Even laptops that state 8 hours battery life and 12 hours on power management - well with FM those numbers mean nothing, FM is a processor monster and battery will be used up quickly with a larger battery (8 hours) and even quicker with a 4 hour battery life.

If you're plugged in most of the time, then you're fine.

Here's one for £100 extra - battery life is 11 hours - the processor is slighty down from the one you have picked

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/1GP04EAABU-HP-OMEN-17-w206na_2076999.html

Now this one is £30 dearer - and it's a 15 inch screen

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NH.Q0SEK.002-Acer-Predator-15-G9-592_2175394.html

Honestly - I'm struggling to find anything better than what you have found - and it's not that mine are better or worse - it's just a longer battery life.

If that's important for you  - it only means when not plugged in.

I'd go for the one you have elected - it's mighty fine - and you can always swap out the hard drive for a SSD later on down the road - when you have bit more money available.

This is a fantastic laptop - but the hard drive is a bit on the small size

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2066567.html

You could get a larger hard drive at another date - or get external storage etc.

However, it's way better than the one you posted @Sharp111

I bought this one a few months back (- with the 1TB drive)

compared to my old one it is fantastic, i run all leagues in England, Spain, Scotland, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium. Denmark, France, Portugal with a medium database (with a few countries players loaded as well) and it goes fairly quick, I don't play long sessions maybe an hour or 2 at a time but I have completed 3 seasons quicker than the time i had completed 10 before buying it.

3d matches look really good in full detail.  The only minor complaint is the heat from the fans but since buying a cooler tray its now fine.

Link to post

I'd always recommend a cooling tray - they're fantastic as it helps to stop dust building up in the fans. Which, in a laptop, can be difficult to get at to clean.

Often people leave a laptop on a bed, floor, or even a table, and that can suck in dust and clog the fans.

@Smurf what do you think of this?

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-5000-15-6-gaming-laptop-black-10164853-pdt.html

Haven't checked around much to see if it could be had for cheaper but the specs seem very similar to this laptop you recommended recently

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/GL553VE-DM107T-ASUS-ROG-Strix-GL553VE-DM107T_2119183.html

Don't know much about laptops so may be missing something obvious

Link to post

Firstly - both laptops are insane! They're great!

I'd opt for the Dell - simply because it has 11 hours battery life - which can only be a plus.

Here's another at £999 - it's a 17 inch screen compared to the 2 you posted which are 15inch

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.Q0QEK.002-Acer-Predator-17-G9-792_1964567.html

Admitedly it's a slightly older processor - but there's not much difference at all - so if you want a 17 inch screen I'd go for my one.

But the Dell one is fantastic - in fairness - if 15 inch is ok for you.

would this be a decent option if your watching your budget

No -

Here's the deal - and I should have mentioned it earlier, but I neglected.

Most computers with an integrated graphics card (meaning it's built into the GPU) won't have a very powerful chip especially the lower end budget laptops.

U processors would be awful for Football Manager in that they are designed to be underclocked, that is to run at a lower speed to save on power.

This is the best laptop under 600 that would be good for FM.

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2066567.html

It does have a graphics card - but if you don't want 3D matches then don't have the option turned on.

It would be way better than what  you're looking at.

I don't understand the question.

Whether you play 2D or 3D has no bearing on fast the game runs. The processor will run the game day to day - and that's key for FM.

Graphics card is key if you want 3D matches.

Always go for the best processor,.

Any Hibryd laptop or windows tablet, that can run FM, that you would recommend?

Not really - most come with a "u" processor - which makes it difficult to recommend a laptop hybrid for football manager.

Most run into the £1000's in price, and for that price you could get a much better laptop

Been reading this thread as I am in need of a new laptop, and FM is the only game I like to play.  Obviously I don't want to be spending an arm and a leg on a laptop if all I am going to be doing is playing FM and the usual internet browsing.

What I want to know is what effect does a processor with a U have compared to that of HQ?

When playing FM I always only  use no more than 6 nations. And I always turn graphic detail down.

So what sort of specs would I be looking at considering I'm not flush with cash, and I'm not bothered about playing with a huge database?

Link to post

I've mentioned it a few times already, on this page alone, and over the past.

I'll go through it again. U processors are designed to conserve power, they're ultra low voltage (that's what U stands for) - this means generally that the processors are underclocked, in that they will operate at the lowest speed possible to conserve as much power as possible.

In terms of HQ - it stands for High Quality Graphics, Quad Core.

Quad Core will offer better performance than a Dual Core - and the High Quality Graphics, well that's just what it is, it means it can draw down on the processor for the graphics, or if you have a graphics card it will draw down from that.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/processor-numbers.html

Sorry, I have read that, but what I would like to know is what noticible differences are there when playing FM?

Say I play with 5 nations loaded, would it be 3 star performance speed with i5U but 5 star with i5HQ?  Just an example.  Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.  Appreciate the advice.

Link to post

I wouldn't know - I'd have to buy all the laptops and test them equally.

But i5U would be worse than i5HQ and so on.

With 5 nations - I don't know what the difference would be. All I can go on is which processor is better. And if you can get a better laptop/processor for equal to or approx the same value, then why not go with the better hardware for similar price.

Hi,

I am looking for a new computer with a budget at around 1200 quid. I'd like it to play fm well but also manage different games with higher graphics functioning. It can be a laptop or desktop whichever offers better value for money in terms of performance. I have little experience in this area so any help would be much appreciated.

Definitely do not assume that, check out the performance benchmarking thread:

It's a little disappointing, but does make things pretty clear for maximizing FM performance: choose a quad core processor with fastest possible clock speed. I7-7700k is probably still going to be at or near the top even after people start getting their Coffee Lake CPUs. No idea what changes FM 18 will bring but it's a bit optimistic to expect the game to suddenly be fully optimized for multicore CPUs (I do hope so though because I want a Ryzen CPU)

Cool thanks bro! Will def check it out!

Hi,

I am looking for a new computer with a budget at around 1200 quid. I'd like it to play fm well but also manage different games with higher graphics functioning. It can be a laptop or desktop whichever offers better value for money in terms of performance. I have little experience in this area so any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have a screen - as if you buy a desktop you will need to have a separate screen - which if you've got 1200 could eat that budget slightly.

Hi mate, i know MAC's aren't always ideal for gaming etc but it is something i want to purchase. the one i was looking it is The 27.5 inch Apple iMac with Retina 5K display - all-in-one - Core i5 3.4 GHz - 8 GB - 1 TB - LED 27" -    1 x Intel Core i5 (7th Gen) 3.4 GHz (3.8 GHz) (Quad-Core)    ,    8 GB (installed) / 32 GB (max) - DDR4 SDRAM     ,

1 x Hybrid Drive 1 TB - SATA    ,

AMD Radeon Pro 570.

Has anyone got one of these that they run FM off of and how does it perform ? Or if not do you think from what you see spec wise it would run FM fine with no issues ? Cheers

Why do you want to purchase a Mac? Have you got specific software that needs to run on the Mac? I completely understand if you do. But, if you don't, then buying a Mac is colossal waste of money. You can buy a much better Windows PC for much cheaper.

It's the wife that is wanting one really but i am purchasing it for her. She has been recommended by her work to get one and she can work more at home. So  i was thinking of using this for FM too, i am not very tech savvy so was having a look on the apple store last night and was trying to compare the machines specs and FM requirements and thought that seemed like the best fit. What do you think ?
