FM14: Tottenham Hotspur - "“ Sold Elvis and bought The Beatles..."

Im into my second season. Grabbed Fourth in my first.

I kept the core of the first team, with my key players with Lamela (Who turned up in the last quarter of the season), Dembele (He is so good with the ball), and the solid defence between Kaboul, Vertongen and Walker.

Players sold first season: Adebayor, Lennon, Carroll, Defoe. Good money each of them.

Bought: Luke shaw, and lewandowski. Lewan was a stroke of genius by baldini for 15m and belanta.

There were so many struggles in the first season, especially at blending of the team. So the first half of the season, i was a battle to keep myself from conceding goals, to actually scoring them. Alas, with the tactical set up being competent, it became easy peasy, though i couldnt keep a possession game. I requested to remove the philosophy out of my job requirements.

Now in the second season,

Sold: Dembele (I know, i know, but it was for 27m), Soldado (30 M),

Bought: Veratti (replacement for dembele. i saved 7m), and timo werner + victor fisher.

I was contemplating of selling siggy, but he is truly a consistent performer for me, scoring vital goals. So ive kept him.

In my first game with manchester united, (and this was after the new patch update), i took a 1 goal lead (Corner ;P) but my reliable paulinho got sent sent off. I switch to my defensive formation. Thanks to capaoue + sandro in their usual beast-mode, Manchester only had 5 shots on goal.

My thoughts: I feel with this team, there are alot of formations and tactics you can experiment with. This group of players arent exactly master of their class, but they are very proficient in which role you want to set them up in. Erickson is my Shadow striker by the way.

Heres my line up: Lloris. Walker. Belanta. Vertonghen. Shaw. Sandro (Half Back or BWM). Veratti (DLP). Capoue or Paulinho (CM Support)/ Erikson(SS) in a attacking version, two inside forwards with Lamela, and Townsend. Fisher is my backup. Lewandowski (F9) Timo is backup.

Next to buy is a youthful defender to learn under the tutelage of Vert.

Hey Enders,

Thanks for your comment. I was stoked to get lewandowski. He didnt do too well in the first season, and i think its because the whole team need serious bonding.

Now he is truly firing on everything. What a steal, and still young! :)

I will go with your suggestions for the defenders. I feel Vlad is a decent backup, and i want to feel safe with another quality defender in the works in case of an injury crisis.

Just one observation, Capoue seems like a better performer than Paulinho for me. I like him in real life, but capoue is much more effective. Might be to do with his physical stats i guess.

Not a wholesale change, but i had to made little tweaks to the individual mentality for my full backs and midfield for example.

I am getting alot more red/ yellow cards, with ''Closing down more'' and ''getting stuck in''.

The formation shape remains the same. Like i said, this team has the players to perform in whichever mould you want. Its more ''optimising'' in my opinion.

Same here, it's been small changes here and there but not a massive overhaul.

Vlad is a nightmare for me, 4 games and 2 red cards, straight reds at that all while having the instruction "Stay On Feet".. Zouma is avalible for £12m so may make a move for him in January.

Townsend has scored 8 goals in 12 games so far...

Has anyone found they have had to change their tactics since the update?

I did put the "Stay On Your Feet" on after the patch, since I heard about the possible raise in the number of yellow or red cards. Other then that, all's stayed pretty much the same. My team got going again just prior to the patch and have kept it up after the patch as well. Only a few games in the patch, though. Damn work and missus that keep taking my FM time. :)

I remedied that by making my defenders on ''Cover'' rather than defend etc. It just allows them to pull back and give sandro and my other midfield time to track back. Not ideal, because i rather have a stopper and cover, but so far its been working.

Ive always thought stayed on feet means they avoid sliding too much, but rash tackles can still happen if you add ''closing down more''. Thats what i thought anyway.

Interesting, yeah I was the of the same thought process but his recklessness severely outweighs any of my other defenders. Ill add that tonight and see if It helps keep them from constant rash tackles. I contemplated dropping Sandro down into possibly the A slot to reduce thier need to close down and rush into a challenge, perhaps combing the A role with the Cover instructions for the CB might reduce the risk of needless bookings. Cheers man.

Sorry for the double post, my only other bit of news was after watching the Champions League this week I sent my scout out to Switzerland and was pleasantly surprised by his report..

I agreed a £9m deal to bring Basel winger Mohamed Salah to the club in January.

Just about got my season started last night. Only two players brought in were Balanta and Honda, I like to give the players I've got a chance before making wholesale changes.

Won my first game of the season 2-4 away to Palace. Went 0-3 up within 35 minutes through Lamela and two from Eriksen, but there's definitely work to be done defensively it seems.

Capoue's been excellent for me - in midfield, as a ball playing defender and even at right back (after re-training).

I've been looking at him too. He and Streller pulled Spurs to pieces in the Europa League last season - not sure they played a better team all season.

Started a new Spurs save last night after getting a bit remorseful about letting so many of the original squad go in my three seasons. This time around the plan is to be a bit more patient with the likes of Paulinho, Chiriches, Soldado, Townsend, Holtby and Chadli and see what I can get out of them (although I'm still open to offers for Rose, Naughton, Lennon, Defoe and Adebayor to try and help fund my two dream signings - David Alaba and Paul Pogba).

Anyway, first window budgets disabled so concentrated on staff changes, tactics etc. First few games have gone well, espeically a 0-2 away win at Man City.

what staff changes did you make?

Didn't get rid of many of note (apart from the physio's with stupidly low physiotherapy ratings) but mostly added people. I went through and appointed the unemployed, English speaking coaches with the best ratings for each of the important factors - attacking, defending, tactical and technique training. I didn't look for them to be all-rounders, but specialists in one area.

I advertised for the U21 and U18 management positions and took the best I could get there, and added a few U21 coaches with decent stats for working with youngsters.

I also appointed a LOAD of scouts. The best I could find unemployed from all areas of the world, building up our scouting knowledge right from the off.

Here's what I've ended up with:

^ Is that definetly coded in or is it dependant on the finances at the time?

I had a 'mate in last nights click with my mate, I'm sitting 3rd now going into November, top of our Europa League group but embarrassingly I crashed out of the league cup on penalties to Colchester.. I played a few back up and youngsters stupidly but Vlad didn't help by getting sent off inside 3 mins! Loon.

Getting £10m for Adebayor was a blessing as Mame Diouf now has 14 goals in 17 games, that's without getting his best position figured out.

January 2016

Last month ended on a four match winning streak and this month started with four wins as well, making it 8 in a row. Then came a tough 0-1 loss at Old Trafford, in a match we deserved something from I think. It was only our first loss in the league this season.

Top of the league by 7 points, with United second one match less played. Next up Chelsea at WHL. I've done well against them almost always, hopefully the same trend continues this time.

Great going forward to get into the Europa League group stages but what a pile of rubbish defending.

They had 1 clear cut chance and scored 5. I had 7 clear cut chances and scored 6.

Several of their goals i have 2 players go chasing after 1 player, which leaves them a free man. Their 1st goal it was 3 of my players that went charging after 1 player.

Another 1 of their goals my stupid LB was stood on the right hand side of the CB positon.

To fix this would i be better off tight marking???

Really like the look of this tactic - should get the best out of Sandro, Capoue and Paulinho (though possibly no room for Dembele?), as well as the full backs. Given the way both Rose and Walker like to bomb on in my save I can see this giving them loads of space to do so. How's Lamela doing in the central role, rather than as an IF on the right wing? How are your results?

To be honest ive not really got into the game yet, so ive only played 1 league game so far and the europa league qualifier.

Ive run it in holiday mode till end of december and was in 8th. Checked the results and it was a mixed bag. Would win 6 on the trot and then lose 2-3.

Have even run it in holiday mode and had Dembele in the Advanced Playmaker position and he was on fire.

Personal preference with Lennon, Chadli and Townsend in that i just dont like them in real life. Chadli to me seems a complete waste of money, Lennon has never performed enough and pushed onto the player most hoped he could. And Townsend i just dont understand the hype. Apart from the odd 20 yard blaster going in ive not seen much to think hes all that.

February 2016

Undefeated and otherwise pretty good, too. The start could've taken a different turn, even though I dominated the whole match against Chelsea, I still had to come back twice and scored the winner only two minutes before full-time. Chelsea took the lead with a Eden Hazard freekick, Mitrovic equalized and Chelsea took the lead again with an easily awarded penalty converted by Lampard. Luckily my domination was awarded with two headed goals from by centre-back, Balanta and Dede, from an in-direct freekick and a corner. Beat Shakhtar 2-1 away in the 1st Knockout Round in the Champions League, but that was followed an awful performance at Forest, only salvaged a point with an injury-time goal from Mitrovic, who was on form for the month, scoring five goals, including both against Shakhtar.

6.2.2016 Premier League

Tottenham 3 (Mitrovic 28, Balanta 73, Dede 88)

Chelsea 2 (Hazard 5, Lampard pen 43)

9.2.2016 Premier League

Tottenham 2 (Benzia 16, Lennon 32)

Blackburn 0

13.2.2016 FA Cup 5th Round

Tottenham 2 (Romero 80, Mitrovic 90)

Stoke 0

17.2.2016 Champions League 1st Knockout Round, Leg 1

Shakhtar 1 (Teixeira 55)

Tottenham 2 (Mitrovic 8, 41)

22.2.2016 Premier League

Nottingham Forest 1 (Kozak 15)

Tottenham 1 (Mitrovic 90+1)

27.2.2016 Premier League

Cardiff 1 (Crouch 90+2)

Tottenham 4 (Agüero pen 23, 56, Walker 35, Mutch og. 60)

Business end of season one approaching - lost the League Cup final 1-0 to Chelsea in extra time, drawn Saint Etienne in the Europa Quarter Final and am top of the league with 6 to play, 3 points ahead of Chelsea but they have a game in hand (and we still have to play each other). Honestly, it's going way better than I expected I had hoped for a CL spot, and woud have been happy with 5th or 6th as the squad settled.

Only signings have been David Alaba (£43m, mostly over the next 48 months - I got carried away but at least I have a left back for a decade sorted), and Alvaro Morata. I've sold Rose and Lennon (both to Monaco), Adebayor (Fiorentina) and Defoe (Sampdoria). In all cases I turned down offers from Premier League clubs to force moves abroad. In the case of Defoe it meant losing out on a couple of million but at least he's not scoring for a rival!

Star performers so far: Lamela, Eriksen, Sigurdsson.

I have Augustin Orion and Mateo Musacchio joining on free transfers in the summer - Orion as back up to Lloris (I plan to allow Gomes and Friedel to leave - and this should free up around £100k p/w in wages) and Musacchio as a decent, young defender to offer us better cover in that position and give us the numbers the back to play 3-4-2-1/3-5-2 on occasion. Other than that I don't plan on much happening in the summer; I intend to aggressively try and sign Pogba and if that takes a couple of transfer windows then so be it. We're strong enough elsewhere and I don't want to disrupt things too much.

Devastated... just lost 3 in a row and followed it with a draw. Unfortunately this included losing 4-0 to Valencia in the second leg of a Europa League semi-final I had been leading 3-1 after the first leg, and collecting just 1 point from 9 in the league and surrendering the title. One game to go, 4 points behind Chelsea. ARGH!

Started a Tottenham save tonight. Signed Robert Lewandowski and I'm hoping to sign Ben Davies as my only two signings. Trying to sell Adebayor but struggling. Also sold Heurelho Gomes and I've sold Gylfi Sigurdsson too. He's a good player but I won't play him so I might as well cash in on him whilst I can. Eriksen will start as my AMC with Holtby the back-up.

Planning a 4231 but that means having Soldado as a back-up to Lewa, so I have a 442 as a back-up shape as well, which will allow me to slot both in if necessary. Lewa is great/versatile so I can always make him a False 9 with Soldado playing further up the pitch.

We'll see how it goes. Looking forward to this save

e: got Ben Davies

Team is likely to look like this:

GK: Lloris/Friedel

RB: Walker/Naughton

RCB: Kaboul/Chiriches

LCB: Vertonghen/Dawson

LB: Davies/Rose

MCR: Paulinho/Dembélé

MCL: Sandro/Capoue

AMR: Lennon/Chadli

AML: Lamela/Townsend

AMC: Eriksen/Holtby

ST: Lewandowski/Soldado/Defoe

I'm honestly thinking about selling Lamela after this third season, even though his attributes are unbelievable. I just can't get him to perform, but atleast the team is winning still. But there's so much more to come from him from what I've read from others and the attributes look like. I play him as an IFs/a in the AMR position as most other do. I have Mitrovic as my striker (CFs/a or DLFs/a), Giovinco in the AML as IFs and Agüero as my AMC (Trequartista when the striker is a CF and as a Shadow Striker when the striker is a DLF). I'll add a screenshot of my whole formation later.

Enders357 what was your player and team instructions etc ? Similar to what you posted at the start of this thread ?

Pretty similar, yes. I use this formation, mostly with the players where you'd expect (Sigurdsson was the left of centre AP and Eriksen through the middle. Holtby played well when covering either).

ScreenShot2013-12-03at112600_zps2a4adf00.png

In the second half of the season, inspired by reece1973, I also started using this from time to time. It's simultaneously a bit more defensive and also invites both full backs on the overlap.

I've actually changed things up a bit myself after slipping to 6, since the changed I beat Man Utd 2-0, then beat Sevilla to get to the last 8 after two really good games winning 2-1 at WHL then 3-0 away!?

I'm currently set up with two variations : 4-1-4-1 & 4-4-1-1. Oddly and not particularly ideal but I've retrained Eriksen as a AMR with some tweak to get him involved but while not optimising the full potential of the attacking players I have made us more of a unit and better defensively.

I'm gonna try and adapt to slowly incorporate some of the real flair players, It's a shame to waste them and feel I'm missing out.

Currently in of those depressing slumps. Won just 3 of my last 12 games in all competitions. Still clinging on to second in the league at Christmas, but knocked out of the CL at group stage. No idea what to do - doing all the things tactically, with 95% of the same players, that have been working so well but everyone's playing crap! Much like in real life we just can't score enough goals. Hmm.

Edit: just clocked that Chelsea - already 9 points and a game in hand clear of me - have conceded only 4 goals, and scored 44, in their first 18 games. Might as well pack up and go home now ;)

Further Edit: Just been knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round at home to Brighton. If I don't turn this around soon I fear I could be for the chop.

That is one mint team.

What is your player instructions like?

I have a similar formation to yours, but i cut the instructions away for Lamela.

Erickson is my shadow strike, and Lewan/Mitro is my F9. In other words, it allows my inside forwards more space and more room for Lamela.

He is not prolific by far, but he always put in a good shift and scores vital goals. So far, i dont know anyone else i can afford, young and old that can do what lamela does on a consistent level. So just be sure, if you are letting him go, you dont have many better options.
