Why is high pace good in FM?

Recommended Posts

I think its odd that a guy with 18 Pace runs faster than one with 5 in Pace. It should be the other way around!

Someone who runs a kilometer in 18 minutes would be slower than a guy who runs a kilometer in 5 minutes.

"In running, pace [4] is usually defined as the number of minutes it takes to cover a mile or kilometer. Pacing is often a critical aspect of endurance events. Some coaches advocate training at a combination of specific paces related to one's fitness in order to stimulate various physiological improvements.[5]"

Because every attribute in FM is based on a 1-20 scale based on how high the level is, for good or worse. So 1 is low ability, 20 is high ability. The same for the ones who are inverted. Injury proneness, 1 is low impact, 20 is high impact. It just makes sense really, since the number is NOT based on a direct metric, but rather on a scale.

There are attributes where its better to have a 1 and bad to have a 20 ingame already. It would not be that much coding to reverse the Pace stat so that 1 is best and 20 is worst.

But....why?

It wouldn't make sense to reverse it. More pace = faster = higher top speed, so having more is better.

Pace = defined as the number of minutes it takes to cover a mile or kilometer. - Lower is better

Pace is NOT mesured in KM/H or MPH like cars where higher is better.

The manual indicates it's a player's top speed. Looking at the definitions of pace online, those definitions seem to line up with FM's definition.

Edit: speed in walking, running, or moving.

Maybe stop looking at the 3rd definition on some random wiki page, and start looking at the first entry of a dictionary?

pace - noun
the speed at which someone or something moves, or with which something happens or changes

And yes, something moving at a higher pace means something is moving faster. Therefor 20 pace is faster than 1 pace in FM.

Yes I agree that if you say "He has a higher pace" you mean that someone is running faster. But the number value in minutes would still be a lower value. And the  game uses numbers to tell us about a players pace.

Pace has many meanings depending on what you are talking about. Its not simple. I am talking about "Running Pace", in the context of a person running.  And the players do run in football manager.

Take a look at this page: https://calcrun.net/pace-time/#pace_time

What is running pace

Running pace is the amount of time in which you run 1 mi or km. Pace indicates how much time the runner spends covering the distance. Knowing your average pace, you can understand how long it will take to cover the distance.

Running pace is measured in minutes-seconds per mile or minutes-seconds per kilometer, depending on the units used. For example, a pace of 6:40 min / mile means that one mile was covered in 6 minutes 40 seconds.

FM doesn't use your running pace measure. It is a very specific word, for a very specific situation. It is not the only way to measure someone's running pace. Just like a lap time isn't the only way to measure F1 cars pace.

Nobody who has ever said "XYZ winger has a lot of pace" has ever meant that he is very fast over a 1mi/km run. It simply refers to his top speed.  Keep in mind that FM doesn't call the attribute "running pace" either. It's simply called pace. I'm not sure how you are tripping over this part, what you are doing is the equivalent of claiming that "Jumping reach" should really measure how far a person can leap, and then linking a bunch of things saying this is how they measure it in long jumping. Yes, obviously there is something called "running pace", but it isn't the same thing as the far more general use of pace, which is what FM uses.

Your logic is deeply flawed from the moment you only accept pace to be measured in minutes. I suspect there's also a language barrier here.

Jumping reach 20 doesn't mean the player can jump 20ft in the air. the attribute given to pace, isn't the time he takes to run a km. It's how quick the player is at his top speed (I believe), so a pace 4 would be slower than pace 18.
