Hi guys,

Love all the advice you've given in the thread, I've read from about half way through hoping to see the latest desktops that would be recommended.

Basically I want a desktop, so I can force myself to sit at a desk rather than lounge on a sofa and knack my back, in my old age.  The budget in my head was £600, but I realise that I may be being a bit optimistic, as I'll need a new monitor too, so as long as I don't tell the missus, I have a little wiggle room.

I noticed this link you posted a few weeks ago, priced currently at 549: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/hp-m01-f0027na-desktop-pc-amd-ryzen-5-1-tb-hdd-256-gb-ssd-black-10207972-pdt.html

Is this still a good recommendation?  I guess I'll be looking at about £150 for a decent sized budget monitor too, so as you can see, my budget is already blown.

For info, it's pretty much FM21, maybe Netflix, maybe trying some new games through Steam, Civ maybe etc, but certainly no FPSs, as I get motion sickness and can't play those sorts of games.

Thanks in advance, chaps, your work here is very much appreciated.

This is still a solid budget option - it has a decent, albeit not outstanding CPU with strong integrated graphics capability.  Games such as FM and Civ, which are not demanding in terms of graphics, will be absolutely fine.

Other modern AAA games may well require you to upgrade to a dedicated graphics card though, although I have seen these chips can run a number of modern titles with the graphics settings turned down.

Can someone advise me if this PC will handle FM21 Touch and play the game somewhat smootly? I dont mind turning down the in-game settings to low and will only have 4-5 leagues loaded, and playing only in the 2D game engine aswell.

Unfortunately neither of the mini pcs turned out to be worthwhile.

Upon further research of the NUC a common complaint was durability- many people seemed to have it die within three years according to a poll and I see many other people have that problem.

So I went with Beelink, it was very good performance wise and it ran FM relatively well in comparison to my laptop but there was a slight problem. The fan was incredibly noisy even when it was just word or chrome. It made my seven year old Xbox seem as quiet as a mouse, and as someone hearing impaired I could barely hear anything else when I tried to watch anything. It would give me such a headache long term and it can’t be any good in terms durability that the fan is already like that brand new. I will be returning it tomorrow. What a shame.

I thought I’d go for a desktop pc, it’s not ideal for space but I’d rather if I was going to spend a lot of money have that issue than a fan tediously generating a load of noise. Are there any pcs just as good for the same or preferably lower price? I can jump to 400 but this will mainly be for fm and uni work, hence I don’t want to buy an expensive, absolute powerhouse of a computer.

How do you think this will FM21:

https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=1L6F7EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB

I want to be able to run it at a fairly decent speed, 8-10 leagues ideally. My current laptop doesn't like FM21, it takes a while processing between screens and there's lag whenever you move between screens and what not. It also sends my laptop fans into overdrive.

Hi. Appreciate any help/advice you can offer me as my computer knowledge is not very good. Once i spent a lot of money on a laptop that was worse than my previous one, hence i wanted some advice.

My current laptop is this which is giving up the ghost HP 15-da0000na https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KFML9YJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a budget of approx £6-700 and am looking to replace it with an improved version (Paid £550 for that over two years ago, if i could find something a little better for the same price that would be ideal.

Generally i use the laptop for FM, maybe a bit of civ and watching movies. A minimum of a 15" screen is required for me. As well as running FM in 3D

I have found these three so far, would you be able to confirm that they are better than my current laptop for running FM

Out of those in your list

https://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-Pavilion-Gaming-Laptop-15-ec1007na/dp/B08WLVP2YB/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=hp+pavilion+gaming+laptop+15-ec1007na&qid=1613657897&s=computers&sr=1-3

Here's how they currently rank in processor (most important for FM):

1989103180_Screenshot2021-02-18at15_37_29.png.79696bb61dca508ce9a99fb703c50386.png

You can see the Ryzen 5 4600H is miles ahead - in it's base clock speed (3000) - and also in cores/threads (6/12)

That's the one I'd go for.

Considering buying this. Any thoughts? Was hoping for something a little cheaper £600-650ish) but does this seem to be a good deal? Don't mind paying a bit extra if it's worth it.

Snap it up.  That's an excellent price for the spec, especially given how insane graphics card prices are at the moment.

It's fairly bulky, but it has a CPU which will handle FM very nicely, but like you would have had with the mini PC's you will likely need to turn the graphics settings down.

The main downside is the fact it's on a HDD rather than an SSD, but given the price this is still a very good deal.

A lot better than the other ones I’ve been looking at, could always upgrade parts of it over time if I needed to but looks very good ta.

Cheers mate. What's the difference between dedicated and integrated graphics? What does FM need?

Integrated graphics = GPU integrated into the CPU

Dedicated graphics = GPU entirely independent of the CPU

In short, for general gaming you will most likely want a dedicated graphics card.  It is the more capable option.  But modern AMD Ryzen chips do have relatively strong integrated graphics, as do the new Apple M1 chips.  The 11th gen Intel chips are supposed to be strong in this regard as well.  Even with these cases though, a modern dedicated graphics card will still be a lot stronger.

FM itself will run quite nicely on a setup with an integrated GPU, although you will likely need to turn the 3D graphics settings down a little (or a lot).  FM's graphics aren't very demanding, so the graphics requirements are quite modest.

But, if you are thinking of other games besides FM, a dedicated graphics card is generally recommended.

Hi any help would really be appreciated. Is this any good to run FM21? It doesnt need to load everything in a few seconds a d doesn't need to run loads of different countries leagues (maybe 3/4 different countries max.)

Without even opening the link - it's a 128gb hard drive - too small.

It is way below minimum specs.

This is the cheapest I can find for you https://www.box.co.uk/M509DA-BQ303T-ASUS-VivoBook-15-M509DA-BQ303T_2886176.html

Hi everyone,

This thread is very useful, thanks for the help.

My laptop is near the end of its life, and im looking for a new one. I usually only play one nation but load all available leagues (so usually around 6 leagues), but would like to have the same level of depth but for maybe 3-4 nations. I watch matches on the 2D view only so 3d graphics are not necessary. The most important thing for me is processing speed and not having to wait once ive clicked on something. Would this laptop be suitable for what im looking for?

It's OK. Meets minimum specs but isn't going to be massively quick.

If you can afford this, it will offer a much stronger performance: https://www.mediamarkt.nl/nl/product/_lenovo-ideapad-5-15-ryzen-5-16gb-512gb-grijs-1656554.html

Hello!

Anyone here own a laptop with Intel Core i5 1135G7 CPU? Decided to switch from desktop to laptop and this seems like a good CPU to play FM on; but first-hand feedback would be better.

Also it seems that Intel is a way to go with FM? Since its better in single-thread scenarios, if we compare it with the likes of r5-4500u/4600u.

It hasn't been benchmarked on the benchmarking thread

But it's similar to these

image.png.ae6856e5f2d526d57d74e6471e01c6aa.png

Here's the benchmark spreadsheet

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12vp32qrHivL-_auW9D0pp-F7ZvrvQlqtBgfcSOL8n5I/edit#gid=1041602144

Pretty solid performance in the rank of 10 or 11 in the spreadsheet.

Should give good performance for FM.

The best deal I can find from Currys or Argos under £500.

A disc drive isn't required for FM.

Yes - but you'll need to switch Windows out of S mode using these instructions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/switching-out-of-s-mode-in-windows-10-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307

S mode means you can only download and install programs from the Microsoft Store, so Steam/Epic and by extension FM, cannot be installed whilst it is in S mode.

Very good processor in that machine.

Hello Everyone,

This is a great thread,

I am looking for a laptop for preferably no more than £500 but willing to go up to £600 if coughing up the extra cash is worth it!

My computer is on its last legs and has been dying a slow death for the last 6 months, I got it for Christmas well back in 2016 in order to help me with my GCSES and schoolwork. Now with education finished I am working from home so need a good laptop for that as well as football manager 2021 which I usually rack up a few thousand hours a year. But that is the only PC Game I play.

I went on UserBenchmark to see my current PC's spec, and I was in for a real shock, gaming was 1%, desktop was 29% and workstation was 0%! So anything is probably an upgrade!

I would prefer a laptop from Curry's or Argos as they are both local to me, and can hopefully order to pick up next day!

Thanks

First one is ok - you'd need to break it out of Windows S mode - easy to do.

Second one - not bad

Third one - it's a chromebook and wouldn't be able to play FM.

The first one is also Windows 10 S, so if you don't want to worry about having to switch it from S mode, then this one: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-14-5405-14-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-silver-10208028-pdt.html

Thanks for the advice, my computer knowledge is near enough non existent, I also found this at Currys and it looks fairly similar

Buy ACER Aspire 5 A514-52 14" Laptop - Intel® Core™ i5, 256 GB SSD, Black | Free Delivery | Currys

Would this do as good as a job as the one you recommended me?

I'd still go with the one Smurf recommended.  Better CPU, better integrated graphics capability and twice the storage.  And it's cheaper too.
