It appears as though that with the league won, Blankley is giving other players a look from time to time.

___

Fuller celebrated his 17th birthday with his first professional contract as well – and with 41 first team appearances and England u-19 callups to celebrate, the young man had had a good year by anyone’s definition.

With van Liefthuizen toiling in the reserves and Bo Jose looking for a new club, the battle over who would be the FMS number one was well decided. But with a full close season coming up and larger clubs licking their chops at the vast array of youth talent on display, one wondered if change wasn’t on the horizon.

AFC Hornchurch 0-3 FMS – 13th April 2013 – BSS #40

Fuller, Clarke, Nygma, Adie Whitbread, Kowalski, Hochstetter, Connor Hughes, Preece, Rudyard, Warner, Rothery. Subs: Bo Jose, Mathieson, Dubb, Baroni, von Lichtenstein.

Goals

AFC Hornchurch – 0

FMS – Warner 42, Rothery 62, Connor Hughes 65

Man of the Match – Kowalski

Absolutely no problem at Bridge Avenue in Upminster, as it took the Fightin’ Writers 42 minutes to break down a stubborn Hornchurch side before overwhelming them with a quickfire double in the second half.

Kowalski rose head and shoulders, so to speak, over everyone else to earn the man of the match gong while the newly professional Fuller celebrated his contract with another clean sheet.

Bo Jose was preferred to van Liefthuizen in the pecking order this time, but the Norwegian wasn’t going to get the move away from the club that he craved while sitting on the bench.

The duel between Warner and McCracken continued with Blankley giving his red-hot striker the day off while Warner cracked the scoresheet. McCracken’s cries of unfairness could be heard from the stand while Warner simply scored and smiled. The league goal count for the two now stood at Warner 23, McCracken 20.

The bigger story, though, was why neither player had yet earned an England u-19 cap. That and Nygma’s hamstring injury which might rule him out for the rest of the rapidly closing season.

The slightly biggest story was the formal release of the ten-player shortlist for Player of the Year, with league statistics noted:

Marco Baroni, FMS (28 appearances, 9 goals, 2 assists, average 7.47)

Cierán Clarke, FMS (32 appearances, 1 goal, 10 assists, average 7.71)

Clint Easton, Basingstoke (24 appearances, 2 goals, 10 assists, average 7.52)

Ashley Marks, FMS (24 appearances, 4 goals, 10 assists, average 8.10)

Phil McCracken, FMS (27 appearances, 20 goals, 3 assists, average 7.54)

Edward Nygma, FMS (28 appearances, 0 goals, 3 assists, average 7.60)

Aiden Palmer, Chelmsford (29 appearances, 4 goals, 6 assists, average 7.36)

Oscar Rudyard, FMS (25 appearances, 3 goals, 10 assists, average 7.38)

Stuart Sinclair, Salisbury (33 appearances, 2 goals, 14 assists, average 7.18)

Matt Warner, FMS (30 appearances, 23 goals, 6 assists, average 7.72)

And no, ladies, Chester Fantu was not listed as one of the top ten players in the league. His reaction was to ask his agent to trash the locker room, which he did when he thought no one was watching.

The very biggest story – we promise – though, was Blankley being put on the spot by the omnipresent “London Footsie” before the match against Farnborough as to which of his strikers was the best – and him actually answering the question.

Assertively, the boss answered, “McCracken.”

Discuss.

Jose, you're a very naughty boy!

___

And that’s Chester Fantu done for the season.

FMS 2-0 Farnborough – 20th April 2013 – BSS #41

Bo Jose, Dubb, Mathieson, Clarke, Kowalski, Marks, Fantu, Hochstetter, Charlie Telfer, Baroni, McCracken. Subs: Fuller, Adie Whitbread, Preece, Warner, von Lichtenstein.

Goals

FMS – McCracken 17, Baroni 38

Farnbrough – goal? Leave the field without injury

Man of the Match – Marks

Fantu’s season came to an end with a pulled hamstring right on the hour mark as the Writers won their penultimate game of the season with some ease over Farnbrough.

Some suggested that the youngster’s injury was a case of the “Not Selected On the Player Of The Season Shortlist Flu” but both he and his agent denied the allegations in a viral YouTube video entitled “Chester Fantu – The Sexiest Player Alive?”

A season-high crowd of 4,158 came to the Love Shack for one more look at the teenage wonders and saw ten of them in the starting eleven – a season high.

And, for the first time, they saw Cierán Clarke wearing the FMS skipper’s armband, though he had to give it up when Whitbread substituted for Kowalski after seventy minutes. The attendance set a league record as well.

In a desperate search for drama, the press focused on the league goal-scoring derby, which now stood at Warner 23, McCracken 21 after the young striker found the range early in the game and Warner was unable to score after coming on after Fantu’s injury.

Bo Jose got the start in goals and had very little to do, though in his own inimitable style, he looked good doing it. He wore his hair spiked for the match and got through the ninety minutes without a hair out of place.

In fact, there was as much discussion in the Writers’ camp about the upcoming u-20 World Cup and the u-21 European Championships as there was about the final league match of a great season against Tonbridge.

Tonbridge 0-2 FMS – 27th April 2013 – BSS #42

Fuller, Bobby Hopkinson, Mathieson, Adie Whitbread, Kowalski, Hochstetter, Charile Telfer, Preece, Rudyard, Warner, Rothery. Subs: Bo Jose, Clarke, Dubb, McCracken, von Lichtenstein.

Goals

Tonbridge – wait til next year

FMS – Rothery 31, Warner 36

Man of the Match – Kowalski

Once more, with feeling.

The Poison Pens capped a remarkable season with a win at Longmead Stadium which was as efficient, and as easy, as it looked.

Kowalski finished his own strong season with another man of the match performance, as he and Fantu complained together about how they could both have been left off the shortlist for player of the year.

Fantu had his leg in a sling, though, which made an interesting mental picture.

The hamstring injuries were becoming epidemic for the team, though, with Rudyard limping off in 65 minutes with one of his own, ruling him potentially out for any post-season selection for England.

Warner capped off his golden boot season with a close-in finish five minutes after Lee Rothery staked FMS to the lead in the 31st minute.

After the match, though, Blankley created more controversy when asked who he backed to win the Player of the Year award. He backed Warner, only to hear the London Footsie ask why that could be when he wasn’t rated by the boss as the best striker at the club.

At that point the news conference ended.

And just like that ... season one was over. And, of course, you could win something with kids.

April record – 5-0-0 (15 points)

Final Blue Square South record: 32-7-3, 103 points, champions (93/29 GD)

FA Cup: Eliminated First Round

FA Trophy: runner-up

I will always thank the day that I made Kelly Brook my agent ;)

Even though the club season was over, the injuries were not.

Kowalski and Dubb were immediately given a reserve game on 1 May and Kowalski dominated. But Dubb tore his hamstring, putting him out for three months and immediately ending any possibility of an England callup for the big matches over the summer.

To make matters worse for Dubb, the man who was responsible for putting him in the reserve match, Blankley, signed a new one-year contract the next day.

The international callups were coming fast and furious now with big matches over the summer, so with the club season over, there was little rest for some of the youngest Writers.

Rudyard and Dubb agreed professional terms early in May as well.

International callups – May 2013

Kowalski (Scotland u-19, Turkey, England, Latvia)

Nygma (Scotland u-19, Turkey, England, Latvia)

Fuller (England u-19, Latvia, Scotland, Turkey)

Clarke (Ireland u-19, Serbia, Cyprus, France)

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19, Poland, Austria, Croatia)

Mathieson (Belgium u-19, Andorra, Sweden, Germany)

For those wondering, the England u-19 strikers are Nathan Owen (Man Utd), Mason Bennett (Spurs), Cole Stockton (Tranmere) and Max Clayton (Crewe).

Heartbreaking was Baroni being dropped from the Italy u-19 squad despite playing very well for them during the club season.

International results – 13th May 2013 – European championship qualifiers

Kowalski (Scotland u-19 1-0 @ Turkey) – DNP

Nygma (Scotland u-19 1-0 @ Turkey) – left out of match squad, injured

Clarke (Ireland u-19 1-0 Serbia) – Man of match, MR 8.7, scored goal

Mathieson (Belgium u-19 2-0 @ Andorra) – Man of match, MR 8.8

Fuller (England u-19 2-0 Latvia) – full match, MR 8.1

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19 3-0 Poland) – full match, MR 8.0

International results – 15th May 2013 – European championship qualifiers

Clarke (Ireland u-19 1-1 @ Cyprus) – late substitute, MR 6.6

Mathieson (Belgium u-19 2-0 Sweden) – full match, MR 6.8

Fuller (England u-19 1-0 @ Scotland) – full match, MR 7.1

Kowalski (Scotland u-19 0-1 England) – full match, MR 7.5

Nygma (Scotland u-19 0-1 England) – left out of match squad, injured

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19 2-0 @ Austria) – left out of match squad

And there was a reason Baroni was left out of the u-19s.

He was listed on Italy’s 31-man provisional squad for the European u-21 Championships.

International u-21 callups – 17th May

Baroni (Italy u-21)

International results 0 18th May 2013 – European Championship qualifiers

Kowalski (Scotland u-19 2-2 Latvia) – late substitute, MR 7.0

Nygma (Scotland u-19 2-2 Latvia) – DNP

Fuller (England u-19 3-0 @ Turkey) – full match, MR 7.9

Mathieson (Belgium u-19 1-3 @ Germany) – DNP

Clarke (Ireland u-19 1-4 @ France) – started match, MR 7.0

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19 0-0 @ Croatia) – full match, MR 7.2

(England and Holland qualify)

And the winner of the Player of the Season award in the Blue Square South is …

…Ashley Marks.

His average rating of 8.11 and ten assists in 25 games won him the award, with second and third places not listed. Warner won the Golden Boot for the league with McCracken tied for second place with Michael Thalassitis of Boreham Wood but took second spot by virtue of having played fewer matches.

There were also transfer rumblings. Interesting ones, in fact.

I'm freaking awesome. MOTM in 50% of my starts.

How is it I don't get many games? Oh yeah, slower than a pregnant woman.

This is one I genuinely don't understand, Mikey. The thing that impresses me more is 13 assists in 24 total matches from a DC position. That's freaking amazing.

Clearly the AI hosed you through the acquisitions of Whitbread and others, and I just don't understand that. You built a very strong center half and he ought to be playing more.

Well ya can't really complain about not being top scorer... I scored more but i think we both have reason to be annoyed at not getting Player of the Year. And sod the lawyer.... GET ME THE PRESIDENT!

Y'all are making this a lot of fun for me. :)

___

The first of the Nineteen rumored to leave wasn’t a player who asked to go. Bo Jose was waiting for a suitor so he could leave.

It was Lee Rothery, whose name came up in transfer rumors with both Liverpool and surprising QPR, which took seventh place in the Premiership in the season just concluded. Rothery told the press that while he loved life at FMS except for the part about never playing, it would be hard to turn down the Premiership.

The other players on the back pages were Baroni, who was being wooed by Udinese, Fantu, who had also attracted attention from QPR, and Preece, who was likewise a target at Loftus Road.

Blankley won the Manager of the Year award, to no one’s surprise, but the question was now open as to how long he could hold his squad together.

Baroni got another disappointment, though, not making the final cut for Italy u-21s for the European Championships – but he had come very close.

There were two other first-time callups, though:

International callups – 29th May 2013

von Lichtenstein (Lichtenstein full international, World Cup qualifier v Bosnia, friendly v Armenia)

Fantu (United States u-20, Venezuela, Argentina)

Kowalski (Scotland u-19, Hungary, Holland)

Nygma (Scotland u-19, Hungary, Holland)

Marks (Wales u-21, Portugal, Lithuania)

Mathieson (Belgium u-21, Belarus, Norway)

Bo Jose (Norway u-20, Poland, Morocco, Mexico, from u-21s)

Fuller (England u-19, Italy, Germany)

Preece (England u-19, Italy, Germany)

Clarke (Ireland u-21, Moldova, Montenegro, from u-19s)

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19, Australia, Scotland)

Hochstetter (Australia u-21, Holland, from u-19s)

International results – 6th June 2013

Von Lichtenstein (Lichtenstein 0-3 @ Bosnia) – started match, MR 5.9

Fantu (United States u-20 4-0 @ Venezuela) – man of the match, MR 9.4

Kowalski (Scotland u-19 3-1 Hungary) – substitute, MR 6.6

Nygma (Scotland u-19 3-1 Hungary) – full match, MR 6.9

Marks (Wales u-21 2-2 @ Portugal) – started match, MR 8.2

Mathieson (Belgium u-21 2-1 @ Belarus) – started match, MR 6.8

Bo Jose (Norway u-20 1-1 Poland) – full match, MR 7.7

Fuller (England u-19 2-0 Italy) – full match, MR 7.4

Preece (England u-19 2-0 Italy) – started match, MR 6.5

Clarke (Ireland u-21 1-0 @ Moldova) – late substitute, no MR

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19 2-0 Australia) – DNP

Hochstetter (Australia u-21 0-2 Norway) – full match, MR 6.4

While that was going on, jaws were dropping all over England as the Three Lions, ranked fifth in the FIFA rankings, failed to defeat San Marino, ranked 208th, in an away World Cup qualifier. Their goalless draw at Olimpico would have everyone talking.

Haha, I love all the talk of moves to bigger clubs. If anyone gets a transfer to a Premier League side, then as an 17-year-old (as most of us are) they'll most likely end up in the youth team or the reserves. Me, I'll be happy to stay at FMS FC for a couple of seasons and get some first team action under my belt.

International results – 8th June 2013

Bo Jose (Norway u-20 0-1 Morocco) - DNP

The Nineteen were somewhat surprised, but especially the strikers, to learn that Blankley had offered a contract to 26-year old Millwall reserve striker Shaun Batt. On terms three times better than any of them received.

International results – 10th June 2013

Bo Jose (Norway u-20 0-1 Mexico) – full match, MR 7.3

Marks (Wales u-21 1-1 Lithuania) – substitute, MR 6.8

Fuller (England u-19 0-2 @ Germany) – DNP

Preece (England u-19 0-2 @ Germany) – substitute, MR 6.5

Hochstetter (Australia u-21 1-2 @ Cyprus) – started match, MR 6.6

Van Liefthuizen was crowing upon his return to Mark Wilson Park after the match. Not only had his Holland side destroyed Kowalski and Nygma’s Scotland by five goals to nil, they had scored all five of their goals with ten men. The Scots enjoyed an 11-10 advantage from the sixth minute of the game and were still overwhelmed, leading to a good deal of taunting upon the return to London.

International results – 11th June 2013

Von Lichtenstein (Lichtenstein 1-1 Armenia) – full match, MR 7.6

And Blankley let it be known he was looking for another striker – this time Preston marksman Graham Cummins or Jonathan Obika from Spurs.

Liverpool’s bid was not long in coming for Rothery.

The Reds submitted a bid of £325,000 for the £220,000 rated striker, and Blankley turned it down.

Joe Broad, brought in by Blankley the season before, accepted an offer from Corby Town and went off to join the Steelmen, hopefully opening playing time for some of the Nineteen.

Von Lichenstein, fresh from his full international appearances, also drew heavy interest, with West Brom and Motherwell sniffing about.

Udinese dropped its interest in Baroni, but that interest was immediately resumed through Serie A clubs Atalanta and Catania. Fantu was still a rumored target for QPR, as was David Preece.

And Kowalski was also listed as a transfer target – by the Baggies instead of his beloved Celtic, with West Brom also interested in Ashley Marks.

The oft-injured Law Martin was on the list for Nottingham Forest, with Mathieson’s fine international play drawing the interest of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

It was getting interesting.

Preston accepted Blankley’s offer of £26,000 for Cummins, though God knew why with so much Nineteen talent available at striker.

Baroni was back on Italy’s u-19 radar for the upcoming championships, with his brief flirtation with the u-21s having come to naught.

And then, it happened. The first member of the Nineteen left the club.

Dubb hopefully. I'd trade the bench at FMS for youths/bench at a bigger club. Knowing my luck though if I did sign for someone else they'd sign Clarke too.

Maybe it's Clarke that's gone, then Dubbs might get his chance to make that rightback spot his own.

I'm grounded. Wanna know why?

Mum went absolutely mental, but I think it's cool. Besides, Dad didn't seem to mind so much- his eyes just kind of glazed over as he went on about Brian Clough and Archie Gemmill.

...with Mathieson’s fine international play drawing the interest of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal...

No, no, not a move for me yet. And as a real-life Chelsea fan, for my character to end up at Arenal would just be unthinkable.

Oh, and ...

___

His name was Matt Warner, and he used to play for FMS.

The team’s 32-goal marksman was off to Sunderland for £220,000, which explained why Cummins was on his way in from Preston for ten percent of Warner’s sale value.

Warner was still too young to agree professional terms, so he went for £55 per week to the Black Cats – a potentially huge bargain if ever there was one. Sunderland supporters were said to be delighted and suggested that Blankley should have held out for more cash. The player remained valued at £160,000. FMS supporters were crestfallen.

Blankley also put in a bid for 26-year old Oxford midfielder Tom Craddock, after reserve striker Ben Strevens left for Boston United. Blankley’s bid for 22-year old midfielder/striker Marlon Jackson was also accepted. Were other big money sales on the horizon?

Not for Kowalski, who got the standard bump to £100 per week from Blankley as he turned professional on 22nd June, the same day the club announced a feeder arrangement with Stevenage, to send players on loan to the Fightin’ Writers, and a parent arrangement with Grays Athletic.

And Liverpool was still after Rothery. Manager Manuel Pellagrini continued to rave about the young striker, and, having been rebuffed once, was not about to be deterred.

But the club that finally got him wasn’t Liverpool. It was QPR.

Harry Redknapp got his man on a deal worth up to £375,000, but again, since the player was too young to agree professional terms, it was a matter of simply signing on the dotted line.

International callups – 27th June 2013

Baroni (Italy u-19, European u-19 championship)

van Liefthuizen (Holland u-19, European u-19 championship)

Fuller (England u-19, European u-19 championships)

Preece (England u-19 European u-19 championships)

The matches marched on, and the money was beginning to flow. FMS FC would look different in 2013-14.
