With van Liefthuizen toiling in the reserves and Bo Jose looking for a new club, the battle over who would be the FMS number one was well decided. But with a full close season coming up and larger clubs licking their chops at the vast array of youth talent on display, one wondered if change wasn’t on the horizon. AFC Hornchurch 0-3 FMS – 13th April 2013 – BSS #40 Fuller, Clarke, Nygma, Adie Whitbread, Kowalski, Hochstetter, Connor Hughes, Preece, Rudyard, Warner, Rothery. Goals AFC Hornchurch – 0 FMS – Warner 42, Rothery 62, Connor Hughes 65 Man of the Match – Kowalski Absolutely no problem at Bridge Avenue in Upminster, as it took the Fightin’ Writers 42 minutes to break down a stubborn Hornchurch side before overwhelming them with a quickfire double in the second half. Kowalski rose head and shoulders, so to speak, over everyone else to earn the man of the match gong while the newly professional Fuller celebrated his contract with another clean sheet. Bo Jose was preferred to van Liefthuizen in the pecking order this time, but the Norwegian wasn’t going to get the move away from the club that he craved while sitting on the bench. The duel between Warner and McCracken continued with Blankley giving his red-hot striker the day off while Warner cracked the scoresheet. McCracken’s cries of unfairness could be heard from the stand while Warner simply scored and smiled. The league goal count for the two now stood at Warner 23, McCracken 20. The bigger story, though, was why neither player had yet earned an England u-19 cap. That and Nygma’s hamstring injury which might rule him out for the rest of the rapidly closing season. The slightly biggest story was the formal release of the ten-player shortlist for Player of the Year, with league statistics noted: Marco Baroni, FMS (28 appearances, 9 goals, 2 assists, average 7.47) Cierán Clarke, FMS (32 appearances, 1 goal, 10 assists, average 7.71) Clint Easton, Basingstoke (24 appearances, 2 goals, 10 assists, average 7.52) Ashley Marks, FMS (24 appearances, 4 goals, 10 assists, average 8.10) Phil McCracken, FMS (27 appearances, 20 goals, 3 assists, average 7.54) Edward Nygma, FMS (28 appearances, 0 goals, 3 assists, average 7.60) Aiden Palmer, Chelmsford (29 appearances, 4 goals, 6 assists, average 7.36) Oscar Rudyard, FMS (25 appearances, 3 goals, 10 assists, average 7.38) Stuart Sinclair, Salisbury (33 appearances, 2 goals, 14 assists, average 7.18) Matt Warner, FMS (30 appearances, 23 goals, 6 assists, average 7.72) And no, ladies, Chester Fantu was not listed as one of the top ten players in the league. The very biggest story – we promise – though, was Blankley being put on the spot by the omnipresent “London Footsie” before the match against Farnborough as to which of his strikers was the best – and him actually answering the question. And, for the first time, they saw Cierán Clarke wearing the FMS skipper’s armband, though he had to give it up when Whitbread substituted for Kowalski after seventy minutes. The attendance set a league record as well. In a desperate search for drama, the press focused on the league goal-scoring derby, which now stood at Warner 23, McCracken 21 after the young striker found the range early in the game and Warner was unable to score after coming on after Fantu’s injury. Bo Jose got the start in goals and had very little to do, though in his own inimitable style, he looked good doing it. He wore his hair spiked for the match and got through the ninety minutes without a hair out of place. The Poison Pens capped a remarkable season with a win at Longmead Stadium which was as efficient, and as easy, as it looked. Kowalski finished his own strong season with another man of the match performance, as he and Fantu complained together about how they could both have been left off the shortlist for player of the year. Fantu had his leg in a sling, though, which made an interesting mental picture. The hamstring injuries were becoming epidemic for the team, though, with Rudyard limping off in 65 minutes with one of his own, ruling him potentially out for any post-season selection for England. Warner capped off his golden boot season with a close-in finish five minutes after Lee Rothery staked FMS to the lead in the 31st minute. After the match, though, Blankley created more controversy when asked who he backed to win the Player of the Year award. He backed Warner, only to hear the London Footsie ask why that could be when he wasn’t rated by the boss as the best striker at the club. At that point the news conference ended. And just like that ... season one was over. And, of course, you could win something with kids. Kowalski and Dubb were immediately given a reserve game on 1 May and Kowalski dominated. But Dubb tore his hamstring, putting him out for three months and immediately ending any possibility of an England callup for the big matches over the summer. To make matters worse for Dubb, the man who was responsible for putting him in the reserve match, Blankley, signed a new one-year contract the next day. The international callups were coming fast and furious now with big matches over the summer, so with the club season over, there was little rest for some of the youngest Writers. Rudyard and Dubb agreed professional terms early in May as well. This is one I genuinely don't understand, Mikey. The thing that impresses me more is 13 assists in 24 total matches from a DC position. That's freaking amazing. Clearly the AI hosed you through the acquisitions of Whitbread and others, and I just don't understand that. You built a very strong center half and he ought to be playing more. If anyone gets a transfer to a Premier League side, then as an 17-year-old (as most of us are) they'll most likely end up in the youth team or the reserves. The team’s 32-goal marksman was off to Sunderland for £220,000, which explained why Cummins was on his way in from Preston for ten percent of Warner’s sale value. Warner was still too young to agree professional terms, so he went for £55 per week to the Black Cats – a potentially huge bargain if ever there was one. Sunderland supporters were said to be delighted and suggested that Blankley should have held out for more cash. The player remained valued at £160,000. FMS supporters were crestfallen. Blankley also put in a bid for 26-year old Oxford midfielder Tom Craddock, after reserve striker Ben Strevens left for Boston United. Blankley’s bid for 22-year old midfielder/striker Marlon Jackson was also accepted. Were other big money sales on the horizon? Not for Kowalski, who got the standard bump to £100 per week from Blankley as he turned professional on 22nd June, the same day the club announced a feeder arrangement with Stevenage, to send players on loan to the Fightin’ Writers, and a parent arrangement with Grays Athletic. Harry Redknapp got his man on a deal worth up to £375,000, but again, since the player was too young to agree professional terms, it was a matter of simply signing on the dotted line.
