Others ... well, read on. ___ Oxford United 1-0 FMS – 22nd January 2014 – FA Trophy Third Round Fuller, Rudyard. Unused subs: JoBoJo. The treble, unfortunately, as United defeated the Writers for the third time in the campaign at the Kassam Stadium, knocking the Writers out of both their cup competitions in the process. James Constable’s goal two minutes after the second half restart did all the damage. Clarke was his usual imperious self for Sunderland reserves, but it still wasn’t enough to overcome Spurs on the same day. Hochstetter, meanwhile, was unable to stay healthy, breaking down in training again Cottbus on the 23rd. A sprained ankle will keep the injury-riddled starlet on the shelf for five more weeks. That wasn’t as bad as Nygma, though, who went down with a hip injury in Rangers’ first loss of the campaign on the 25th, at Ibrox. He is expected to miss two months, or the majority of his loan tenure at the club. Clarke and von Lichtenstein continued to roll in their matches for Sunderland youth against Crewe and West Brom against West Ham, with von Lichtenstein continuing his prowess in front of goal. FMS 4-1 FC Halifax – 28th January 2014 – BSP #33 Fuller, Rudyard. Unused sub: JoBoJo. FMS continued to hold its place in the playoff places with a convincing home win over Halifax. But more importantly, a slide in form from Oxford United over the last half of the month had brought the league leaders into range. Championship side Birmingham put in a loan request to West Brom for Kowalski for six months just before the end of the January window. When the Baggies accepted, Birmingham put Kowalski in their u-18 side, which didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to him. Nygma’s rehabilitation went well at the start and he had to marvel at Rangers clinching a playoff position in the Second Division on February 1. Cambridge United 1-1 FMS – 1 February 2014 – BSP # 34 Bo Jose, Rudyard. Unused sub: Fuller. February began with a draw at The Abbey against the U’s. The match was drab in every respect, as Blankley rested Fuller in favor of Bo Jose between the sticks. Marks continued his fightback from injury with a man of the match performance that day as well as West Brom youth drew Norwich 2-2. Kowalski made his Birmingham youth debut the way he so often had for West Brom, winning the top player honor in a 2-0 defeat by Huddersfield. Von Lichtenstein carried on for Kowalski at West Brom, earning honors after a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa u-18. Salisbury City 1-2 FMS – 8 February 2014 – BSP #35 BoJose, Rudyard. Unused sub: Fuller. The Raymond McEnhill Stadium saw what might become a fight for the FMS number one jersey between Bo Jose, who started his second straight match, and Fuller, the England u-19. Rudyard was ever-present as always but did not get on the scoresheet. The win extended the team’s unbeaten skein to nine as the Writers continued to chase Oxford United at the top of the table. That same day, it was Law Martin injuring himself with a broken metatarsal in training with Rochford, putting him on the sidelines for eight weeks. Von Lichtenstein put himself into the running for a callup to the West Brom senior squad after a brace against Bolton Reserves on the 9th. He was everywhere, running his goal scoring total to 11 in 15 appearances at the lower levels. He repeated the trick the next day against Crewe youth in an abbreviated performance. McCracken went down with a training injury on the 11th, straining his thigh, but along the way found out that the press had dubbed him the “next Michael Owen”. However, his team lost 2-1, which he said was more important. Clarke, who was banging at the door of Sunderland’s first team, didn’t hurt his chances with a very impressive performance against Middlesbrough Reserves on the 16th. He repeated that performance a week later in a reserve match against Spurs, and then again the very next night against West Brom, in which Warner scored his team’s only goal of the match. Von Lichtenstein, mentioned by the media as a potential callup for West Brom himself, netted the next day against Bolton youth, putting his name even more deeply into the mix. However, a rib injury in that match not only put that talk on hold for the time being, it also put him out of the running for international selection. FMS 0-0 Hereford – 18th February 2014 – BSP # 36 Bo Jose, Rudyard. Unused sub: Fuller. Bo Jose had made himself FMS’ first-choice keeper and held the shirt with another clean sheet against Hereford. Unfortunately, Rudyard put his head into the match and left with it concussed, putting him on the sideline for about ten days. Preece and Fantu also excelled on that day, with Preece and Rothery playing well in a win over Brentford on that day, and Fantu lighting up Cardiff and scoring a goal in a 3-1 win. Now back with Reading after the conclusion of his loan spell at Brentford, Fantu declared himself ready for spot with the Royals’ first team. Naturally. Kowalski, who had played four reserve and youth matches for Birmingham since his loan move from West Brom, got his usual Scotland u-21 callup the same day. For his part, Bo Jose was excited about still more rumors of a full international callup for Norway, especially since the team was about to play Brazil. But he had no such luck. He was, however, selected to the u-21s for their European Championships qualifier against Macedonia. Nice consolation prize. Mathieson was named to the Dutch u-21 side for its qualifier against Israel. And even Baroni hadn’t been forgotten, earning an Italy u-19 callup to face South Korea. Preece was bumped up to England u-21s to face Georgia.
