roversawh7
Some of you may remember the holiday game I did in England last year that reached 2207. I am trying to do the same thing this year now that the last patch and Genie Scout are out, but I will be posting up year-by-year results so you can follow my work on nationalities and regen breakdown. In this first post I will be laying out a sample of future reports by showing what happened with the regen intake created at the start of the game. This game has all English leagues running with a large database on the latest patch and data update. Blackburn: I will be following Blackburn's regens as they come through and either stick with them or move to another team. I am doing this because I want to understand how one of the teams in the top divisions manages their youth intake, whether or not they can judge their own talent, and what level PAs a player can reasonably expect to generate from their own youth team. Of course Blackburn did not get any regens at the start of the game, so their section of this report is not as detailed as it will be in the future. Blackburn are predicted to finish in 8th place this season. The start with a rep of 6700 and 14,226,950 in the bank, with 5,000,000 allocated towards transfers and 472,760 to spend on wages each week. Their average attendance is listed at 23944 while their training and youth facilities stand at 17 and 14 respectively. Nationalities: I will determine the nationalities of regens coming through English teams in every season. Please know that this is actually quite difficult to do perfectly, but I will try my best to get good numbers and not miss any regens. I will post the nationalities that were present in the intake at the start of the game. Keep in mind that this may not be representative of a regular intake because the top clubs have not gotten any regens. Also realize that the relatively high number of Welsh regens will always be present because of the Welsh-based teams in English leagues like Cardiff. 93.88% 767 England 0.12% 1 England Angola 0.37% 3 England Australia 0.12% 1 England Cape Verde 0.12% 1 England Egypt 0.12% 1 England Macedonia 0.24% 2 England Ireland 0.37% 3 England Italy 0.24% 2 England Ivory Coast 0.12% 1 England Morocco 0.24% 2 England N. Thebaker
I saw your report last year and it made for really interesting reading. I think there will be a much wider range of 2nd nationalities if what i've noticed is anything to go by with more players having 2nd nationalities generally. Look foward to reading your results

Look foward to reading your results What I've noticed so far seems to be a wider range, but less in total. There also seem to be a lot less British regens that are not just English single nationality. Update forthcoming tomorrow (Wednesday night). Hopefully having a little more to look at will draw a little more attention to the thread.
roversawh7
2009 Blackburn: Not so good news for my Rovers as Big Sam did not do any better than Paul Ince. He made way for Roland Nilsson, but even he could not save the day as Rovers finish 19th and go down with Newcastle and Stoke. Their reputation falls to 5608 from 6700, but they are predicted to finish 3rd in the Championship. They still have 14,688,980 in the bank, with 4,448,330 for a new season of transfers and 451,900 for wages. The financial situation looks fine even before they unload some of their players. Average attendance has fallen to 17246 from 23944. Here is the first youth intake. Not a whole lot of good, which may be due to the worse than expected season. roversawh7
2010 Blackburn: Fortunately Blackburn's stay in the Championship was brief as they finished second and got the automatic promotion. Although they had the chance to play their local rivals Burnley and Preston a couple of times, those matches will not be resuming as Burnley struggle and may drop down to League One shortly. Preston, meanwhile, are on their third manager as John Gregory replaces Joe Royle, who did not do enough to please the board. With the promotion, their reputation jumps up to 6334 from the 5608 it had dropped down to before. They come up with 11439150 in the bank, but the expected income allows them to have a transfer budget of 18166600 and spend 532210 on wages. Their average attendance goes up by 1000 to 18286 while they were also able to upgrade their facilities from 17 and 14 to a perfect 20 for training and 19 for youth. We will see if that has an impact on the quality of regens later. First, their 2009 crop with their PA, 2009 CA, and 2010 CA: Martin Kennedy England DL 129 53 58 Stuart Barton England GK 124 53 55 Lewis Williams England GK 119 47 51 Darren Leach England ST 109 46 49 Lars Krogh Eng/Den DC 100 63 66 Tony Easton England GK 91 35 45 Stefan Hudson England GK 89 41 41 Steven Jackson England DWBL 78 30 37 Rob Attwell England DC 73 41 43 Overall, nothing great in terms of development as the worst players had the biggest jump in CA. Most of the non-English or Welsh first nationality players can be attributed to the club's scouting knowledge. Arsenal are responsible for all the French regens so far and Chelsea has a staff member from Equitorial Guinea. roversawh7
The good news is that I have another update. The bad news is that Genie Scout is not working for me (I have gone all the way to 2015). We will see if I can find a way to get around it. Let that not get in the way of the update for 2012. Blackburn Roland Nilsson did some good things in his tenure, which Fulham took notice of. He moved on to Craven Cottage. Rovers decided to replace him with Darren Ferguson. I suspect thtat this decision would not be taken all that well in real life. He kept the team hanging around the level at which he inherited as we finished 12th. The reputation increased from 6679 from 6449. The financial situation is about the same as they have 18667110 in the bank with 11832800 for transfers this season and 630250 for wages. Attendance stays roughly the same with an average of 18658. There will be some more interesting regen news as a few of them are being released and moving on. 2009: Name Nation Pos PA 09 10 11 12 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Martin Kennedy England DL 129 53 58 76 81 Stuart Barton England GK 124 53 55 59 61 Cambridge Lewis Williams England GK 119 47 51 51 57 Released Darren Leach England ST 109 46 49 51 54 Released Lars Krogh Eng/Den DC 100 63 66 69 73 Tony Easton England GK 91 35 45 52 54 Released Stefan Hudson England GK 89 41 41 42 44 Released Steven Jackson England DWBL 78 30 37 44 46 Released Rob Attwell England DC 73 41 43 43 43 Released 2010: Name Nation Pos PA 10 11 12 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Kevin Askey England MC 172 71 74 79 Phillip Cook England ST 139 58 64 72 Michael Worthington England DMRC131 50 54 55 Grant Currie England DC 97 85 85 88 Nick Bond England ST 97 45 49 55 Steve Kennedy England MC 73 55 55 55 2011: Name Nation Pos PA 11 12 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Eliot Marrow England MC 119 37 39 Danny Brennan England AML 116 47 49 Matthew Brooker England MC 113 56 62 Lawrence MarrinerEngland DWBL 96 52 57 2012: Name Nation Pos PA 12 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Fabian MacDonald England GK 154 69 Steve Elder England ST 150 69 Tom Drew England DL 127 52 Nathan Wood England GK 116 43 Phil Mason England DC 112 59 Chris Barratt England DLC 111 56 Mark Fuller England AMR 108 59 Danny Fearn England AMRC105 46 Neil Stone England AMRL 98 52 Daniel Griffiths England MC 97 68 Nationalities 0.20% 2 DR CongoEngland 91.65% 911 England 0.80% 8 England Australia 0.10% 1 England Bulgaria 0.20% 2 England Ghana 0.10% 1 England Guinea-Bissau 0.10% 1 England Holland 0.20% 2 England Ireland 0.10% 1 England Italy 0.30% 3 England Jamaica 0.10% 1 England Malawi 0.10% 1 England Morocco 0.10% 1 England Nigeria 0.10% 1 England Saudi Arabia 0.40% 4 England Scotland 0.10% 1 England South Africa 0.10% 1 England St. Vincent 0.30% 3 England Wales 0.10% 1 Ireland 0.10% 1 Mexico England 0.50% 5 Nigeria England 0.10% 1 Portugal 1.51% 15 Wales 2.62% 26 Wales England High PA Regens Jim Greenwood continues his success with Fulham as his CA leaps ten points to 176, only two short of his 178 PA. 2009: Name Nation Pos Orig Club PA 09 10 11 12 Transfers __________________________________________________________________ Junior Williams England AMC Doncaster 186 81 89 101 119 St.Pat's Athletic '11 Jordan Humphreys England DCST West Brom 178 85 94 105 122 Tom Dodds England MC Bradford 177102108 114 177 Sheff Weds '10 Alan Sidwell England DWBML Boro 177 77 86 104 117 Ross Moon England DCST Millwall 176 81 94 116 129 Motherwell '11, Millwall '12 Steve Royle England SWDC Northampton 176 85 90 101 108 Cardiff '11 Ryan Campbell England MC Burnley 173 75 79 84 92 Sheff Utd '11 Tony Smith England AML Sheff Utd 170 74 85 97 112 St. Pat's Athletic '11, Barnsley '12 2010: Name Nation Pos Orig Club PA 10 11 12 Transfers __________________________________________________________________ Trevor Heaney England GK Nottm Forest 194 92 97 105 Aberdeen '12 Ben Beadle England DWBL Watford 180117120 121 Bradford '12 Tom O'Brien England GK Southampton 179 83 92 100 Wigan '11 John Booth England DCDM West Brom 179 79 81 83 Matthew Delaney England AMC Chelsea 177 74 78 95 Kevin Smith England MC QPR 175120127 129 Derby '11 Kevin Askey England MC Blackburn 172 71 74 79 Jack Saunders England DM Tottenham 172 98103 109 Andy Doherty England DC West Ham 171 73 84 102 Preston Ricky Allen England DC Stoke 171 66 75 84 2011: Name Nation Pos Orig Club PA 11 12 Notes __________________________________________________________________ James Hall England MC Man Utd 177 68 75 Richard France England DC Man City 176120121 Lee Hinton England DRC Wolves 174 84103 Kevin Gregory England AMRC Leyton Orient 171 72 77 Josh Griffiths England ST Lincoln 170 74 75 2012: Name Nation Pos Orig Club PA 12 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Chris Smith England AMRC Fulham 189 87 Denny Graham Wales AML Liverpool 174 64 Ryan Browne England SWDRC Everton 171 82 Cameron Jenkinson England AML West Brom 171 78 General Info Arsenal win the title to wrestle it from Manchester United's domination. ~Ian~
A third great regen for WBA, they could really be building a foundation for the future here. It's interesting that none of these regens have made moves to any of the biggest clubs yet, with Wigan probably being the biggest club to sign any of them. A sign of the teams' scouts missing the talent, or are they looking abroad instead? In the 2009 batch, Tom Dodds' CA is listed as increasing by over 60 points this year. Typo, or huge improvement? And there were quite a few Nigerians coming in this year, were they all from different clubs or maybe a few from one with a Nigerian staff member? roversawh7
And one last thing, which teams have been winning the youth leagues so far? KUTGW Tom Dodds should be at 117 and not 177 CA. The number of Nigerians was unusual for this year, and seems to be from different clubs. This number would not have been unusual last year, which shows how things have changed in this version. As for big teams not signing the players, it seems that a lack of CA is the big obstacle for now. This leads me to believe that the biggest clubs do not scout PA as much as some people complain about. It seems like teams are not even good at determining which of their own players have talent and a lot of these 170+ PA players have not improved very much at all so far. Good thread, I'll be keeping an eye on this. If your Genie Scout isn't working try using FMRTE, it does pretty much the same job for experiments like this I will try to use FMRTE soon if there is no Genie fix in sight, but I am not sure if the search features will be powerful enough for me to use. Also I would strongly prefer being able to run it without the game on. As a West Brom fan, I'm delighted we're starting to churn out some youths . The talent is certainly coming through, but the players might not be improving enough to reach their full potential.

roversawh7
2013: Blackburn Blackburn have to deal with another managerial change as Darren Ferguson decided to leave for Everton and Stale Solbakken from Kobenhavn was the choice of the board. The team finished in 15th with their reputation rising from 6679 to 6672. The financial situation improved as the balance went up to 24349460 and there will be 12321830 for transfers and 630250 for wages. Attendance does not fluctuate much at 18574. roversawh7
None of the regens have made any spectacular gains in ca, is this because they are not playing regularly, even the ones at a lower level like gregory and griffiths from 2011 I would suspect that those at top teams are not playing regularly enough and the ones at lesser teams are not playing at a high enough standard. It seems that the players who moved to St. Pat's or Scotland have shone the most improvement. This forthcoming update is the latest that I have. I am still trying to get a scouting tool that will suit my needs. In the meantime, I will try to do some screenshots. Go ahead and drop in any requests that you have. the--dud
I'm loving this thread by the way, really good work here Is it just me or is it really worrying that out the 8 high PA regens from the first year, none of them has reached a CA of 150 or more in 5 years? Not very realistic if you ask me... I wonder if it's a flaw with FM09 itself or if it's just the AI managers that are abusing the players (bad training, not enough first team/reserve etc)? Because if you look at some of the regens that people have posted in several threads here, some appears to have gotten a CA of at least 180-190 in 3-4 years of development... So perhaps the AI is just really horribly bad at developing players?? This thread definently raises a lot of interesting questions about regens in FM09

roversawh7
Good news! I have figured out how to fix Genie Scout. Retire your holiday manager and create a new one if the game has trouble loading the people. Obviously this fix will not work all so well if you are just using Genie to give you a little help in the game. I will plan on updating on Friday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. In past player managerial news, Sol Campbell has already made it to his third management post, while Maniche has started his trek at Cambridge City and Raul has been named manager of Hull. Gonzalo Higuain's 25.5 M move to Manchester City from AC Milan created buzz, but not as much as Liverpool's title drought ending this season. Manchester United will not be taking it too hard as they have retained the Champions League crown and CSKA Moscow take the UEFA Cup away from the traditional top leagues. Crystal Palace created some rare variety on the domestic front with their League Cup victory but Manchester United completed a cup double with the FA Cup. tomsmith1989
The regens from Blackburn still haven't really reached any sort of CA that would see them break into the first team. Just one of the regens at Blackburn has exceeded 100 CA so far (Steve Elder) and he is on 119 CA which is still not really good enough for Blackburn. The most promising talent at Blackburn is Sean Thompson (182 PA) but he isn't developing very quickly. He has only improved by 14 CA in 3 years. That would suggest that in 15 years (at the same level of progression) he would only reach 148 CA, and assuming he was 16 when he first came through the system, then he would be 31 and most likely on the decline. kutgw! The top transfer is a regen for the first time as Liverpool spend 24.5M to pry Frenchman Bilal Granier from Aston Villa. Manchester United return to their title winning ways while Juventus and Lazio make an Italian sweep of the European trophies. Arsenal win the League Cup while Chelsea win the FA Cup. The highest regen CA was 113 with a total of 11 above 90 CA. On the low end of the scale were CA 1 and PA 8.

tomsmith1989
Blackburn still don't have any impressive regens really, and the new batch has followed that trend. Humood Ali from the 2013 batch looks like he will be a great player. I'm assuming he is 19/20 now, and with a CA of 157 will be really good. Kutgw! roversawh7
The only time I have seen Blackburn consistently turn out decent regens were in the 08 version when they briefly became the most dominant team in the land. This is even with perfect facilities. Humood Ali will be a good one. This bodes well for England fans everywhere because he has chosen to represent them. Saudis will rue the fact that they could have had their best ever player.
roversawh7
2017: Blackburn: Gordon Strachan was clearly not happy with midtable mediocrity and gave Rovers fans quite a scare with a 17th place finish. While the fans are calling for his head, all signs point to him keeping it for another year. As a result of the downturn in results, reputation takes a sharp dive by over 250 points to 7154. The money situation is not much better with 14032390 in the bank, but 18221390 to spend for transfers and 800410. Average attendance tails off slightly to 21599. In positive news, the youth facilities have joined the training facilities at a perfect 20. 2009: Name Nation Pos PA 09 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Martin Kennedy England DL 129 53 58 76 81 88 93 98106107 Chester'13 Stuart Barton England GK 124 53 55 59 61 64 64 64 64 64 Cambridge'12,Glentoran'13,Gainsborough'16 Lewis Williams England GK 119 47 51 51 57 59 61 65 70 72 Kettering'13,Boston Utd'14,Carshalton'15,Stoke'16,Salisbury'17 Darren Leach England ST 109 46 49 51 54 57 62 74 75 75 Carshalton'13,Dag & Red'14,Sutton Utd.'16 Lars Krogh Eng/Den DC 100 63 66 69 73 77 83 88 91 94 Forest Green'14 Tony Easton England GK 91 35 45 52 54 55 57 60 63 64 Stalybridge'13,Gateshead'14,Braintree'15,Hereford'16,Eastleigh'17 Stefan Hudson England GK 89 41 41 42 44 Retired Steven Jackson England DWBL 78 30 37 44 46 Retired Rob Attwell England DC 73 41 43 43 43 43 Retired,Havant & Waterlooville'13 2010: Name Nation Pos PA 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Kevin Askey England MC 172 71 74 79 82 83 87 92 96 Phillip Cook England ST 139 58 64 72 79 88 95107115 Michael Worthington England DMRC131 50 54 55 61 76 82 88 91 Grant Currie England DC 97 85 85 88 90 94 95 97 97 Nick Bond England ST 97 45 49 55 59 61 62 62 62 Stalybridge'15 Steve Kennedy England MC 73 55 55 55 55 56 Retired,Newport Co.'14 2011: Name Nation Pos PA 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Eliot Marrow England MC 119 37 39 40 40 40 42 43 Bradford PA'15,Chelmsford'17 Danny Brennan England AML 116 47 49 56 61 66 68 68 Burscough'15 Matthew Brooker England MC 113 56 62 67 70 77 85 88 Aldershot'16,Rochdale'17 Lawrence MarrinerEngland DWBL 96 52 57 58 59 61 61 61 Stafford'15,Redditch'16 2012: Name Nation Pos PA 12 13 14 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Fabian MacDonald England GK 154 69 71 75 78 83 87 Steve Elder England ST 150 69 94112119120124 Tom Drew England DL 127 52 53 57 61 69 76 Nathan Wood England GK 116 43 49 55 61 70 75 Phil Mason England DC 112 59 65 67 70 73 74 Billericay'16 Chris Barratt England DLC 111 56 57 60 64 67 71 Mark Fuller England AMR 108 59 64 64 64 64 64 Farnborough'16 Danny Fearn England AMRC105 46 49 54 56 Retire Neil Stone England AMRL 98 52 54 56 57 58 60 Bath'16 Daniel Griffiths England MC 97 68 68 68 68 68 68 Bury'16,Kidderminster'17 2013: Name Nation Pos PA 13 14 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Sean Thompson England GK 182 78 89 92 99104 Danny Anderson England ST 155 84 92 99108110 Christos Mertakkas Eng/Cyp DC 151 65 68 75 79 97 Oldham'17 Matt Godden England ST 150 62 70 85 91 95 Leo Edwards England ST 138 57 67 68 73 81 Barnet'17 Michael Traore Eng/Gam ST 134 60 63 72 75 81 Exeter'17 Peter Fairhurst England AMC 128 52 58 60 63 Retired David Cook England DRC 119 60 71 79 82 98 Steve Furlong England GK 107 45 49 51 54 58 CambridgeC'17 2014: Name Nation Pos PA 14 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Lee Roberts England FC 159 69 74 88 98 Tom Birch England DRC 150 70 74 80 92 John Browne England ST 136 60 65 74 82 Mike Hitchen England GK 122 79 82 85 87 Christian Knowles England ST 121 60 66 67 73 Released James Scott England AMRST 117 45 52 59 66 2015: Name Nation Pos PA 15 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Jake Marsden England DC 130 53 63 71 Paul Waghorn England GK 130 53 59 65 Martyn Ryan England ST 129 51 54 60 James Harvey England ST 127 48 50 54 Paul Robinson England DMC126 53 54 57 Adam Harris England AMC 88 61 61 61 2016: Name Nation Pos PA 16 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Phil Hughes England ST 128 56 67 Sam Dickson England MC 122 52 55 Phil Pratt England WBL106 53 56 Kevin Hopkins England ST 109 59 63 Ben Styles England MC 105 58 64 Warren Costello England DL 94 45 51 2017: Name Nation Pos PA 17 Notes __________________________________________________________________ Jake Harding England AMR 134 56 Anthony Robson England ST 118 43 Ross Foreman England ST 113 58 Glenn Leonard England DWBL106 58 Ben Lennon England ST 94 61 Andy Jones England DR 71 55 Nationalities: 92.10%769England 0.48% 4 England Australia 0.24% 2 England Hong Kong 0.60% 5 England Ireland 0.12% 1 England Jamaica 0.12% 1 England Morocco 0.48% 4 England Nigeria 0.12% 1 England Norway 0.12% 1 England Poland 0.12% 1 England Scotland 0.24% 2 England South Africa 0.12% 1 England Tanzania 0.12% 1 England Turkey 0.12% 1 England USA 0.12% 1 England Wales 0.12% 1 England Zambia 0.12% 1 Ghana England 0.12% 1 Holland 0.12% 1 Luxembourg 0.12% 1 N. only news out of that country as Manchester City make a large purchase by spending 21.5M to bring Yoann Gourcouff from AC Milan. Arsenal win the title while Valencia and Barcelona win the two continental competitions to ensure a second year of the same country taking both. Manchester United lift the League Cup while Liverpool grab the FA Cup. The high CA among regens this year is 117 with 7 in total above 90. Unfortunately for some regens, they have been created with the lowly CAs and PAs of 1 and 2.
~Ian~
Blackburn and West Brom should be ashamed of themselves for the poor job they've done with Askey and Booth from 2010.
Ceching You Out
Interesting experiment roversawh7. It looks like AI player development is roughly linear as the player ages and highly dependent on playing time; I'd bet that the players who are growing the most quickly in CA (~10/year) are getting decent playing time since most of them are at Championship sides. They may also have higher levels of determination, professionalism, and ambition compared to the rest of the pack. Might be something worth checking on now and again for a better understanding of why certain players are growing while others essentially stagnate. gio
Really interesting this, great work! I was wondering if you could check if there was a correlation between the number of players signed in the season prior to the youth intake, and the quality of the regens? I've heard that this has a big effect on the quality of newgens that you produce, i.e. that the more players you sign, the poorer the quality of newgens. Cheers! Might be something worth checking on now and again for a better understanding of why certain players are growing while others essentially stagnate. From what I have seen, professionalism does seem to play a role whereas the other two are not necessarily as high in the fast developers. That said, I would suspect that external factors like training quality, availability of tutoring, and correct evaluation by their team all seem to play a very important role. Really interesting this, great work!I was wondering if you could check if there was a correlation between the number of players signed in the season prior to the youth intake, and the quality of the regens? I've heard that this has a big effect on the quality of newgens that you produce, i.e. that the more players you sign, the poorer the quality of newgens. Cheers! This would be kind of difficult to keep track of at a satisfactory level because of the observations I would need to do to set a sufficient sample size. I have often wondered how the game determines the amount of regens that you will receive, as it can vary from 4 to 10 or more from year to year. It may have to do with squad size. I would suspect that the quality of your side does not have that large of an effect on regen quality or the top teams would only get worthless regens. willing to take them on in the forms of Southend and Torquay. Christian Poulsen also comes to England to manage, starting at Scunthorpe. Newcastle also make major management news with the return of one of their saviors... Yes, Newcastle have hired Kevin Keegan again. I think we all could get pretty good odds on Keegan joining Newcastle in 2018! Transfer news was dominated by Carlos Vela's 23.5M move from Arsenal to Real Madrid, where he contributed to a Champions League victory, while AC Milan took home the UEFA Cup. Manchester United win another title while the other side of Manchester is hardly wallowing in self-pity as City grab both domestic cups. In this crop of regens, the high CA was 104 with 9 players starting above the 90 mark. 1 and 3 represented the absolute low end of the ability scale.
