Franky's PHANTOMS Tactic for FM 17 - plug and play!!!!

Recommended Posts

This is my third tactic for FM 17. It's vaguely similar to my TOTAL DOMINATION tactic but far more aggressive and with the following differences.....

1. Based on Jurgen Klopp's 'gegen press' philosophy with high pressing and aiming to aggressively win the ball back in midfield in order to get the counter attack under way but without sacrificing defensive shape.

2.The F9 draws the opponent's defensive line high up the pitch in order to facilitate lightning fast counter attacks.

3. Plug and play so no need to change mentalities at any stage..... stay on ATTACKING mentality permanently, even with small teams!!!

4. Higher scoring. The movement of the front 3 plus BBM is designed to absolutely rip apart the opposition's defensive shape..... regularly score 4 or more goals in a game!!!

It's called PHANTOMS because your 3 attackers plus BBM get forward undetected, phantom like. The opposition defence just can't handle the movement, similar to Liverpool's front 4 at present and at least one of them is usually left unmarked with an unchallenged attempt on goal. The base premise of the tactic is to draw the opposition defence high up the pitch and then hit them with a lightning fast counter before they can recover. There's actually 3 different modes of attack so depending on how your opponents are set up, your team will deploy the following strategies..............

1) Counter attack culminating in a killer through ball over the top for any of the front 3.

2) Work the ball for the inside forwards/wingers or overlapping wing backs to get a cross in.

3) Work the ball in and around the box with high tempo, one touch passing that leaves the opposition defenders chasing shadows (or phantoms as I prefer to call them :D).

The two aims of creating this tactic were for it to be really fun to deploy with fantastic football on display and for it to be a totally PLUG & PLAY tactic that scores goals but can also hold it's own at the back..... it's more or less as solid at the back as SUPREME and TOTAL DOMINATION but whereas those were more balanced tactics where the approach could be altered by switching mentalities, PHANTOMS is all about relentless attacking to rack up the goals with the philosophy of 'attack is the best form of defence'.

FORMATION

PLAYERS REQUIRED (same as TOTAL DOMINATION except for striker position)

Wing Backs – These guys are key players in the team as they provide a crossing option from out wide so decent crossing ability is still a must. High stamina, work rate and dribbling ability will also increase their effectiveness.

PPM to set (in order of importance)......... 1) gets forward whenever possible......... 2) hugs line.

Training focus - crossing or dribbling, whichever is lower.

Centre Backs - There's a regular centre back in both DCR and DCL positions. One must be quick so he can recover in case an attacker breaks the offside trap.

PPM to set......... 1) runs with ball rarely......... 2) plays short simple passes (if passing ability is poor).

NOTE: The default setting is 'Central Defender' but you need to change that to 'Ball Playing Defender' for any centre back who is better in that role. It's okay two have two BPD's if need be.

DMC – Sits in front of the back four and sweeps up a lot the opposition clearances, thus putting out fires before they start. His ability to win the ball in the middle of the park allows the the front 3 plus both wing backs plus the BBM to operate in a highly attacking manner. Also offers a passing option as he's always unmarked. When it's played to him, he's on the lookout to distribute to the APM or wing backs when they make their runs forward. Must have a high work rate as he'll be charging around, picking up all the loose balls and closing down attackers. A defensively sound, hard working player ...... Schneiderlin being perfect for this role.

PPM to set......... 1) stays back at all times........ 2) tries first time shots........ 3) likes to switch ball to other flank.

Training focus - 'passing' if less than 13, otherwise 'long shots'.

Box to Box Midfielder - Gets forward quickly to support the striker and provide a presence in the box for all the crosses coming in and defensively works hard to help the team win the ball back so a high work rate is very important. In order to make the tactic work, it's imperative that he has the PPM of 'gets into opposition area', without which the tactic is just not the same. He's going to be one of your main goalscorers so good finishing and composure are also very important. Decent long shot ability is a bonus, although not a must........ Once again, I cannot stress how important the 'gets into opposition area' PPM is.

PPM to set......... 1) gets into opposition area...... 2) gets forward whenever possible. If he has a long shot attribute of 13+ then 'shoots from distance' and 'shoots with power' then 'tries first time shots'.

Training focus - finishing or composure, whichever is less.

Advanced Playmaker - There's not much to be said about this guy. He's the creative force of the team so anyone who fits the bill with decent passing and vision.

PPM to set......... 1) gets into opposition area...... 2) tries killer balls often....... 3) likes to switch ball to other flank.

Wingers – There's two of these guys and they'll be looking to get on the end of attacking moves and especially to take advantage of crosses fired in from the wing back on the opposite flank so good finishing and 'off the ball' ability is helpful, although not essential. What is essential though is that they must be quick and have good dribbling and crossing ability.

PPM to set......... 1) gets into opposition area...... 2) gets forward whenever possible........ 3) if quick then 'knocks ball past opponent'.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Out of necessity, inside forwards can be used instead of wingers. It's okay to have a winger on one flank and IF on the other. However, any inside forwards that have 'shoots from distance' as a PPM, train them up as wingers on the opposite flank. Do NOT use them as IFs as they cut inside and shoot from ridiculous positions every time, even though a team mate might be open for a tap in. Memphis Depay is a perfect example. Extremely wasteful as an IF on the left flank but an excellent winger on the right. Also, do NOT use them as inverted foot wingers so Memphis for example should be trained up and used ONLY as a right winger. However, if such a player doesn't have the attributes required for a winger (pace/acceleration/dribbling/crossing) then just sell him as he's not worth keeping. You want your wide men to be productive, not wasteful.

Having used the tactic now for several seasons, I find that wingers work better than inside forwards. They stretch the opponent's defence more and that creates extra space in the middle to exploit. They are also far less wasteful than IFs because being out wide, long shots are not really an option. Needless to say, this reduces the amount of wasteful long shots. All in all, I believe you will score more goals with wingers than with inside forwards. However, this doesn't mean IFs should be neglected altogether. If you have a player like Juan Mata then he'll still do a good job as an IF.

False 9 – Comes deep to drag the opposition defensive line high up the pitch. If he receives the ball, he'll either play in the inside forwards or BBM or lay it off simple and drive into the box from deep in anticipation of a cross or a through ball. Either way, he's extremely difficult to mark as he's always on the move. A quick striker will probably work best.

PPM to set........ 'comes deep to get ball' and if good passing and vision then 'tries killer balls often'.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:  Use your striker in the SUPPORT role that suits him best, as dictated by the green 'role suitability' circle. So in order of preference if all else is equal........ F9, DLF, DF, CF, TM...... Also set his PPM to 'comes deep to get ball' and if he is quick, 'likes to try to beat offside trap'.

Training focus - finishing or composure, whichever is less.

TACTIC USAGE

Totally plug and play..... just sit back and watch the show :D

OPPOSITION INSTRUCTIONS

Leave them to the assistant manager. However, get one with high attributes for Tactical Knowledge, Judging Player Ability and Motivating.

TEAM TALKS

I let the assistant manager deal with team talks as I'm playing the Touch version of the game where you can't do team talks yourself. Obviously, if you know what you're doing then would be better to do them yourself.  As with OIs, Just make sure to have a decent assistant manager who has high attributes for Tactical Knowledge, Judging Player Ability and Motivating.

FURTHER INFORMATION/ADVICE

Both centre backs, striker and BBM must NOT be on corner taking duty plus inswinging corners are preferable.

While the tactic is plug and play, there is ONE thing you need to do. As soon as a player picks up a booking, manually set him to 'ease off tackles' in order to avoid a second yellow. Front 3 are set to this by default.

Do not buy a DMC, BBM or wing backs with poor work rate, they're not compatible with this tactic. I had Carrick at Man Utd with a 'work rate' rating of 11..... got rid straight away.

For your best free-kick takers, set their PPM to 'tries long range free kicks' as the default setting is to float the ball into the box, even when there's a clear scoring opportunity with a direct shot. Once this PPM is acquired, they won't waste such opportunities.

Every player that has less than 13 for long shots should be trained to 'refrain from taking long shots'. For the Inside Forwards/Wingers and Striker, this is a priority as they tend to waste good passing opportunities by taking ridiculous shots from distance....... this PPM will help to minimize that.

This is optional but will help. If your best long shooter has 'shoots from distance' as one of his PPMs, set him to 'lurk outside area' from attacking corners so just switch him with the BBM who is in that position by default.

FINAL WORD

When playing at home, it's important to note that PHANTOMS works better against equal or superior opponents due to it's highly counter attacking nature. Against teams that park the bus, my TOTAL DOMINATION tactic is better as it adopts a more measured, probing approach that is better at breaking down teams that just sit back and defend. Alternatively, you can lower the team mentality to 'control' and up the tempo from 'much lower' to 'lower' as this will provide a similar probing approach.

Also, the tactic is still in testing phase and maybe some tweaks will be required to further improve it so your feedback will be really helpful.

EDIT (from original version to v1.1): Originally, this started off as a strikerless formation with a Shadow Striker in the AMC position but after further testing, he's been replaced by an F9.

EDIT 2 (from v1.1 to v1.1a):  From attacking corners, I've swapped the MCL with the MCR. Playmaker lurking outside area works better than the BBM there as he distributes the ball more intelligently.......... I've re-uploaded with this minor tweak and so current version is v1.1a

EDIT 3: (from v1.a to v1.1c): Tactic is now more clinical in attack and slightly better defensively also. More goals scored from corners as well plus less wasted long shots........... all aspects of the tactic have been improved.

Well Franky its working straight away, probably helped that i was already playing with a silmilar formation, plugged your tactic in from the West Ham game, i have pushed the SS up to a DLF as i didn't have a player really for the SS role, and my striker has scored 5 goals in 4 games so happy with that, will keep you updated.

They're going to be played in on goal with through balls because the opposition defence will almost always be pushed up high as they have no striker to mark so they need to be quick in order to pull away from the defenders once that ball is played through for them and have striker like qualities in order to take advantage.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Wingers work just as well as IFs so just use these players in whichever role they are more suited to. It's okay to have a winger on one flank and IF on the other.... really doesn't matter.

Shadow Striker – Comes deep to receive the ball, then plays in the inside forwards or BBM, who'll regularly have one on ones against the keeper. Needs good finishing ability and if he is quick then that's a bonus as he'll also be played through regularly by the inside forwards/wingers.... sometimes he plays them in and sometimes they return the favour.

Already mentioned above but to get the best out of this tactic, all three attacking mids (AML/AMR/AMC) should be quick. They will regularly have acres of space to run onto through balls and their pace is what allows them to pull away from defenders and get themselves into a 'one on one' with the keeper. Raheem Sterling is a monster of a player as the Shadow Striker, even though that's not his best position. His pace and acceleration destroys teams...... someone like that would be perfect in any of the three positions.

FINAL WORD

This tactic is still in beta phase and maybe some tweaks will be required to further improve it so your feedback will be really helpful.

Tactic can be downloaded from the following link............. http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=09234683403107191886

PS. The one really big downside for Man Utd fans like myself is that Zlatan is redundant in this formation...... such a shame :(

And have you implemented set pieces that someone mentioned on your last tactic? They really do wonders

EDIT: Minor change and have re-uploaded the tactic...... if you've already downloaded it then no need to download again. Just set crosses to 'whipped crosses' instead of 'low crosses'. I used whipped in the testing stage but thought I'd be clever and change to low prior to uploading. Turns out whipped are better even though there's no big striker in box. Low crosses meant all interceptions were hoofed clear whereas whipped crosses mean interceptions are headed clear but only to the feet of one of our attackers on the edge of the box, which often results in a shot on goal. Low crosses didn't allow that and meant less goals scored.

I haven't actually. I use my Man Utd vs Arsenal test game to tell me what works and what doesn't and found the set-piece adjustments were defensively detrimental. Obviously, if you feel they work for you then by all means feel free to make the changes. Personally, I prefer things how they are. Might make some other changes to attacking corners though in the not too distant future..... need to test first.

Would love to give this a try - TDv1.2 is killing it for me at the moment - plus I dont have any Shadow strikers, and retraining my forwards would take too long :)

Get rid of the strikers end of season and get a couple of shadow strikers in...... you'll definitely enjoy PHANTOMS.

WOW! The DLF is working a treat for me

I'd still recommend the shadow striker as he's deeper than the DLF, meaning the opponent's defensive line will be much higher. You're probably missing out on through balls over the top with the DLF.

I´m starting third season with Liverpool and i´m going to use PHANTOM and retraining my strikers to SS. I´ve already used this tactic for the last three games of the season and record is 0w 1d 2l but that´s not relevant because it wasn´t fluid. I lost Cl final 4:2 but let´s see what happens this season. I usually don´t like strikerless formations but i trust you Franky. :)  Will post some screens.

If you don't want to waste your striker, change the shadow striker to a false 9....... in fact, that might be a better option overall. I'm going to test that and would appreciate if others could as well and let me know how it goes for you....... If managing United, it means Ibra lives

An update on how my game is going (with the shadow striker). I'm in my 4th season in the Premier League with Wycombe with a media prediction of 6th. Currently top after 11 games. Have played United, City and Arsenal away yet conceded only 4 goals in the 11 games.... 8 clean sheets from 11 games is something I'm quite pleased with, especially using a plug and play attacking mentality.

8fb1d7013d.jpg

Not going so well in the Champions League as I'm using a weaker team plus several of the new signings to allow them to gel.

I´going to use strikerless until you make it official that something else is better. I have a very valuable save going. :)

I was going to start with this but noticed a few recommended tweaks etc. With the OP tactic with SS moved to F9 and crosses changed to whipped is that the latest recommended? Thanks

Yes, if you could try that and let us know how it goes, that would be great.... thanks. I might end up re-uploading the tactic with those changes if it works well as getting rid of your strikers to accommodate a shadow striker can be a bit of a pain for many, especially United fans like myself. Ibra can play as an F9, albeit a very slow one. Better than replacing him with an SS and sticking him in the reserves, though.

Yep, they stay the same. If he is quick then 'likes to try to beat offside trap' might be worth trying.

Just rebooted my season to test PHANTOMS with a False 9 instead of a Shadow Striker. The F9 has the following two manually added PIs....... ease off tackles and shoot less often so same as the SS he's replacing. My F9 is Marlos Moreno who's not very strong but is quick and is absolutely tearing it up with 7 goals and 2 assists in the first 3 league games of the season. We could easily have scored 10 against Spurs..........

906c68ff9d.jpg

91bd35c932.jpg

951fb66797.jpg

The match stats also show a respectable percentage of shots are on target. This means very few wasted shots from distance, simply due to the fact that there are always options available in the final third, even more so than with a shadow striker. Defence appears to be as tight as before with no clear cut chances created against us in either game...... so I think it's fair to say the F9 works better than a shadow striker. Therefore, I've re-uploaded the tactic so if you downloaded the original, discard that and use this one instead. It'll show up as PHANTOMS v1.1

What training?..... I don't mess about with that 5hit. I pay the ass man top dollar to take care of that :D

Oh, if you mean training focus then yes, it's different. No need for 'gets forward whenever possible' and 'gets into opposition area' as they are already more or less defaults for all striker roles. My F9 Marlos Moreno has 7 goals and two assists in the first 3 league games of the season. Here's a screenshot of his PPMs. The only one necessary is 'refrains from taking long shots'. The others were there before I switched him to play as an F9 and he only has them as he's naturally a right winger...... they can be discarded.

I'm just going into my 4th season with Accrington Stanley so I'm gonna give this a go. I do love a False 9 so this is right up my URL is this. I'll update as much as I can along the way.

TACTICAL UPDATE: This is optional but will help. If your best long shooter has 'shoots from distance' as one of his PPMs, set him to 'lurk outside area' from attacking corners so just switch him with the BBM who is in that position by default. In my MAN UTD vs Arsenal test game, Pogba's just got a hat-trick with two of the goals coming from long shots after the ball is cleared from an attacking corner.
