AI Experiment - what would happen if?

Recommended Posts

The Bandits are yet to produce a world star, I have been looking out for anyone with particularly high PA to track, but none so far.

I thought there was a defender called Jewell who had a PA of over 150 a while back. Is he still about? I think he is the best I have seen from the bandits youth set up.

Anyway, very nice work kipfizh !!!

Other people have tried to do similar experiments but none have stood the test of time on the boards like this one.

The way things are going FM08 will be out before we get bored of the bandits icon14.gif

kipfizh, awesome- absolutey blinding thread

Long time reader, first time poster. Not sure if i've seen it anywhere but surely with all the cash the bandits would look to invest in high quality staff. What are the non-player personnel like? Any continental or world class staff?

Kepp it going boss

If I remember correctly, Gamble is a 130/130 coach.

Gillies is no longer in the game, but he was rubbish compared with what's to come...stay tuned icon_smile.gif

As for coaches, they have a World Class assistant, and a Continental and World Class pair of coaches. However, that doesn't necessarily make them good!

Danny Gamble showed his ruthless side immediately after gaining promotion, recognizing that a lot of the players that had earned it had hit their peak. He exercised the Bandits’ financial clout in the summer, spending a whopping 7.5m recruiting a new team.

His major signings were up front. Having seen the partnership of Pat Mike and Daryl Jenkins carry the team forward over the last few years, he instantly dismantled it, paying Colchester 1.9m for the 19 year old Ryan Morley, and partnering him with the more experienced Mark Bartley, who broke the club record signing fee, costing 3.2m.

Bartley, with 158 CA and 159 PA, scored 23 goals in his first season, but the real starlet is Morley. His CA is 155 but his PA is a whopping 186. Now 20, he has appeared and scored for the England Under 21 team, while hitting 23 for his club.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’ll last – the kid is going to be a world star and the big boys knows it – Arsenal, Leeds, Chelsea and Rangers have now all tabled bids around the 7.5-9m mark. He is unlikely to see a second season with the Bandits.

The full analysis of the squad comes later.

So the Bandits had a solid enough first season in the Championship, eventually finishing 14th. That spot is somewhat deceiving, however, as this graph of their position shows:

Position Graph

With only six games to go, they were fourth in a very close league, having spent most of the season in the playoffs. However, the fall to 14th isn’t such a bad thing – they’ve lost good managers in the past by overachieving one season, and missing expectations the next. They don’t want to lose Gamble – he’s doing a superb job.

They got absolutely nowhere in the cups, but that won’t bother them too much.

So a good season, an exciting summer of spending was followed by great success, and if Gamble decides to continue his shopping spree, they may be in for some serious success in the future. With Morley leaving, however, they’ll lose their wonderkid, but it shows what can be done with spending, as they’re not losing money – his selling fee alone will more than cover the transfers in last summer.

Notes: Continues his extremely high level of performance, and in the twilight of his career picks up more medals, as Arsenal win the Premiership by a country mile, and also pick up the League Cup. He still plays one more game for England to reach 92 caps, but with age catching up with him, he decides that next season will be his last as a player. To be honest, he could carry on for years, but he thinks now is the right time to step into coaching.

And what a coach he could be. He has a CA of 150 and a PA of 170, so could be a great success.

Notes: For some reason Leeds decide that now it the time to replace the veteran stopper, despite his ability and performance level remaining very high. As a result, he does not add to his 137 caps, and decides that after one more year, he will retire next summer and move into coaching. He has exactly the same CA (150) and PA (170) of Goalkeeper 1, and should be a great success.

Left Back 1 – Retired from playing 30/06/2030

2030-, Scunthorpe (fitness coach), CA 110, PA 110

Following his retirement from playing, he becomes fitness coach at Championship Scunthorpe. It seems he does a good job, as they are able to perform right until the end of the season, eventually winning the playoffs to return to the Premiership.

2027-, Chelsea (assistant manager), CA 130, PA 130

Remains the Chelsea assistant, and remains unable to help them win back the Premiership. This season was particularly poor, as they dropped out of all cups very early, including the group stages of the Champions League.

Centre Mid 1 – Retired from playing 02/07/2030

Other stats

Having won all three games in the group stage comfortably, England moved on to the knockout stages, where they beat Ukraine in the second round before facing surprise package Jamaica in the quarter-finals. Earlier, the Jamaicans had knocked out Brazil in the group stage with a 1-0 win, the South Americans only needing a draw to qualify.

Jamaica put up a good fight, before losing 1-0, but England fell one round later, losing on penalties to France after a 0-0 draw. They didn’t concede throughout the tournament, scoring eleven, but it wasn’t enough. France went on to win it, beating Spain in the final by virtue of their third penalty shootout victory.

The world rankings immediately following the World Cup looked like this:

World Rankings

Arsenal won the league by a massive thirteen points, ahead of deposed champions West Ham, and Chelsea. Man Utd recovered from an awful start to finish fourth, while Liverpool struggled to 14th.

Premiership

Everton won the FA Cup, beating Newcastle in the final, while Arsenal claimed another trophy, defeating Sheff Wed in the League Cup.

Marseille were the surprise winners of the Champions League, beating Milan in the final, exactly as they had six year earlier, while Real Madrid, having not qualified for the Champions League, beat Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup final. Impressively, Real won every single game they played in the tournament, a total of fifteen wins.

Summary

Danny Gamble is doing a superb job at the helm of the Bandits. He has spent big, brought him some very clever signings, and turned them into a decent Championship side. At no point were they even thinking about relegation, and for much of the season an unlikely playoff campaign beckoned.

In reality, the 14th place finish was probably good, as it should restrain expectations next season.

The two strikers were absolute revelations, but it’s a shame they look like they won’t be able to hang on to the precocious talent of Ryan Morley, whose PA of 186 is attracting the big boys. He is a great player now, at only 20, and should become a world star in time. If he leaves, I’ll track his progress. He is without doubt the biggest star the Bandits have ever bought (I don’t count the original Bandits, who were artificially placed there – this is a genuine regen).

This summer will be interesting – will he spend big again? Or was that a one time only thing, after winning promotion?

Next season will be the last playing season for any of the ex-Bandits, as both keepers retire at the end of it, around their 43rd birthdays. Their time in the game has given them great coaching qualities, can they take that on and become the first ex-Bandits to turn to full management?

Arsenal dominated the Premiership this season, and behind them Man Utd showed signs of getting back to being a big club – will any of the old big boys fall out of the top flight as United did twice?

Bandit’s former manager watch

Justin Edinburgh was sacked by Blackpool with them 11th in the Championship. Without him, they rose to eighth, but he rose faster, being hired by Everton, then 14th in the Premiership. Although they dropped to 16th, he led them to an FA Cup triumph, and will lead them into Europe next season.

Steve Brackstone took Bolton up from 20th to 11th in the Championship, in a rare season of success for him.

Gary Perry helped Sheff Utd rise to 13th in League One having finished 20th last season.

Dean Glover has retired.

Martin Lawton was hired by Wrexham, 20th in League One, and tasked with saving them from relegation. He succeeded superbly, helping them up to finish 11th.

Last season, the 20th placed player had a CA of 103, now that bar has been raised to 112, which is a clear improvement, but the more dramatic leap happens at the top end, with five new signings at a CA level that the Bandits had never signed at before. They’ve never had a 140+ player (apart from the originals), and now they’ve got five of them.

Bartley and Morley made a potent combination up front, combining to score 46 goals, but it looks like that partnership will be broken as Morley, and his tremendous PA, is likely off to Arsenal, Leeds, Chelsea, or Rangers, who have all tabled large bids, greater than the 7.5m the Bandits spent on all their signings combined last summer.

Bartley and Spellman, meanwhile, two other signings who along with Morley made up the top three performers in the season, are both considering the possibility of moving to a bigger club in the future. It seems Gamble has done terrifically at bringing players in and helping them shine, but some now want to move on.

What a spike at the top end – for the first time they have 150+ and 140+ players, and now they have 12 players with AI of 120+ compared to last year’s five.

Across the board, there’s a big rise in quality and depth, you would imagine that Gamble will let some of the lower end go as the squad is now very big. If get can replace the 80-110 range with more players over 120, the squad will be extremely strong going forward.

The ‘Ryan Morley’s of the world

With the Bandits now pulling in players who could go on to be worldwide stars, it seems a good time to start tracking the better ones, and who better to start with than Ryan Morley, signed for 1.9m last summer and seemingly on his way to a top club for around 9m after just one year.

His CA of 155 is pretty huge for a 20 year old, and with a PA of 186 he is only going to get better.

Ryan Morley

Physically, he’s fantastic, fantastic heading abilities make him a constant threat in the air, while his pace and dribbling ability means he’s quite a handful on the floor too. Pace and strength is a frightening combination for defences and he has both in abundance. And just to top it off, he can crack them from distance as well.

He has practically all the attributes you’d ever need a striker to have. He’s direct, and he has the end product. Many Championship defences will be glad to see the back of him.

I'd give my left ball for a striker like Morley in game icon_biggrin.gif

Nice progression, and sure it was better not to over-achieve in the first Championship season.

What do you think, why the former managers were not willing to spend big, thus improving squad quality? The money was in the bank, and as your screenies show, there are interested players as well. Is it just generally that a Championship is a big step up, or does it show that Gamble is a quality manager?

A few things about the ex-bandits non-playing stats have certianly raised my eyebrows.

I know these are all veteren players who have seen and done it all, but does anyone else think it's surprising that all their stats are instantly equl to their max potential? Surely it'll take a few seasons of coaching/managing to fulfil your potential.

Also, both goalkeepers have current ability of 170 and potential of 170. Now if it was random, the chances of both keepers having exactly the same potential is 1 in 40,000. I understand it isn't random, but don't these stats seem a bit too specific and non-random? Also Left back 1 and Centre mid 1 have CA and PA of 110.

Is it just me, or do these stats just seem too similar within the ex-Bandits?

Probably due to this:

Regarding other managers not buying big, I think I might know why (I am in the middle of a similar experiment, but will post the details on another thread once I've got a few more seasons under my belt).

I think AI managers look at their squad and compare it to the interested players list, if there is not a big difference in quality they say 'nah - it's not worth spending a large sum of money for only a little gain' - whereas human managers will go - yeah, £15M for an extra attribute point in those 4 key attributes will make a difference to my Prem team.

In my experiment, a new manager came in and bought players in the 1st 4 windows, but then in the 3rd season - said no, there's no-one better that is interested, so I won't bother.

I also get the feeling that the AI sticks to 'scoutable' players, whereas human players will check through various U18 Squads etc...

mighty red,

don't wait too long with your experiment to put it on-line,

If you wait too long it's like going to a movie where you didn't see the beginning. It's more difficult to get involved. I'm following the Bandits from the beginning here, and it really feels like I'm a fan from the early years.

I remember doing this on CM99/00. My funny AI thing is fixture lists so I pulled a switch by dropping the treble winning Man Utd to the 2nd division. This meant the team was now in 8 competitions

World Club Championships

League (46 games)

FA Cup

League Cup

Champions League

Charity Shield

Euro Super Cup

Vans Trophy

Making the final of each competition (semi-finals of Champions League) meant that the team played some ridiculous number of games and that an additional 2 weeks was added to the league season despite the rules not allowing this. Unfortunately there were no play-offs scheduled (Man Utd were auto promoted by about 40 pts) and the next season rolled over with no leagues to be played.

Kipfizh - long time reader 1st time poster.

Another wishing to add their voice to the long list of congratulations for a riveting thread.

Quick question do any ex-Bandits have the Bandits as their Favoured Clubs or did they not hang around long enough? What about the clubs they went on to play for? I'm imagining the Idiots had no clubs but maybe Favoured personal, perhaps even each other?!

Very intresting, i find myself way more intrested in how The Bandits are doing than how the players are doing, hehe.

I would kill for a copy of this save (plus db if possible)..

NeilJWD: Yes, it was quite a tail off, but in fairness the league was so close that a few losses meant the plummeted.

amack1n: It is a good point that their attributes are so similar, but then what affects their coaching ability? Position, ability, playing stats, length of career, standard of club they're at? For all those factors the keepers are identical, which in a real situation would never happen. It does beg the question though - are coaching abilities calculated rather than randomised?

Blakejo: They both want to leave to move to bigger clubs. They haven't yet though.

Mighty Red: Yes, the new managers seem to make a splash both for their first couple of seasons, and for a couple of seasons after a promotion. After that they go for stability. This is actually quite realistic - managers like to stamp their mark on a team, and then tweak it later, major overhauls suggest that what they've been doing to that point has been wrong. Bit more ambition would be nice though!

Meitheisman: As ever, thanks for that! Strange that the centre mids don't have such a good average, I tend to struggle much more to get full backs playing well but the Bandits never had this issue.

CanaryLawn: All the ex-Bandits had the club as a favourite, and most added their long term club, long term manager and a couple of players to that list. At Chelsea especially many of the Bandits listed each other.

dr-nix: The original DB and the save will both be available at the end of the experiment.

Season update on the way soon!

Great job as always Kip.

Just a question, not sure if you were keeping track of it though.

How injury prone were the ex-bandits? Did you notice certain positions being injured more? Were they getting injured more often in the beginning of their careers or in the midage?

Can't wait for the next update.

TB36: all will be revealed....

Skunner: I set all their injury proneness to 1, and as a result they really didn't get injured very often.

DS: Still, jumping 13 and heading 20 is pretty good for the Championship, but you're right, at the highest level he'll be more dangerous on the floor with his pace and skill.

League

FA Cup: 3rd Round

League Cup: Final

There is trouble brewing for the Bandits, but before we get to that, let’s have a look at how they’ve done over the past season.

And it’s been a fine season. After Ryan Morley made his expected exit in the summer, moving to Chelsea for 8m, Gamble replaced him with Rob O’Neill, a 22 year old Irish striker who went on to score 25 goals in the season. An excellent replacement.

They never challenged for promotion or were threatened by relegation this season, sitting comfortably in the middle of the league and rising four places from last season’s position. They seem to be solidifying extremely well, not once looking like they’ve struggled with the jump up to the Championship.

But the real story of the season came in the League Cup, where for the second time in their history they reached the final. After a couple of easy rounds against League Two opposition, they knocked out Premiership Crewe in round three, Cardiff in round four, before they faced Arsenal in the quarter finals.

An early red card for the opposition allowed the Bandits to run riot, as they raced to a 3-0 lead, and only when the numbers were evened up by the sending off of Neil Mitchell did Arsenal come back into the game, the score ending 3-1. Man City followed in the semi finals, having a fine season in the top half of the Premiership, but the Bandits won both legs 2-1 to set up a showdown with FA Cup holders Everton in the final, managed by original Bandits manager Justin Edinburgh.

They got off to a dream start, Pat Mike giving the underdogs the lead, but Everton pushed hard and by half time were 2-1 ahead. In the second half, the Premiership side showed their superiority, never allowing the Bandits back into the game, and that’s how it finished.

So all would seem well with the Bandits, as they climb up the league and show in the cups that they can beat the best, but unfortunately it is not all good news.

Two summers ago, Danny Gamble signed a bunch of players that would form the backbone of his side. Mark Bartley and Ryan Morley were the star strikers, Rob Spellman the keeper, and Sebastien Perrin the creative winger. In their first full season with the club, those four were the club’s four best performers.

They were all signed on two year deals, which all expire this summer, and they all feel too big for the Bandits. Morley, ironically the only one not itching to move, is now a Chelsea player, Perrin is moving to St Etienne on the Bosman ruling in July, while Bartley and Spellman look content to watch their contracts run out before moving on.

In short, the Bandits could lose most of their best players this summer, and how Gamble replaces them will be absolutely crucial.

Notes: Has a tremendous season to end his playing career, helping Arsenal to their customary position of fourth, and scoring an average of over 7.50 even as he approaches his 43rd birthday. With his CA rising again and his form being so good for a top club, the question has to be asked of why he is retiring, but he has made the decision to move into coaching and as of this summer will be chasing success of a new kind. His international career will end with 92 caps.

And he should be a success. His coaching CA has risen twenty points to reach his PA of 170, and he is more than capable of being a top manager.

Notes: Like his old goalkeeping rival, he plays superbly well in his final season, but Leeds do not give him the opportunity to shine very often. He is sticking by his decision to retire from playing this summer, and his international career ends with 137 caps. His coaching CA has risen from 150 to his PA of 170.

Other stats

England warmed up for this summer’s European Championships by once again winning all ten of their qualifiers without conceding a goal. Admittedly, their group was ridiculously easy, the other qualifier being Finland, who they will face in the group stage along with France and Sweden.

Chelsea came back from a few seasons away from the title to regain the Premiership, although they were pushed all the way by West Ham, who once again come second. QPR returned to third, while Liverpool and Man Utd were stuck down in mid table.

Premiership

Relegated West Brom managed the consolation of lifting the FA Cup, beating Derby in the final, while Everton pipped the Bandits in the league cup.

In Europe, it was a familiar story, as after two seasons without lifting the Champions League (although they won the UEFA Cup last season), Real Madrid beat Milan in the final to lift the trophy for the nineteenth time in their history. Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow won the UEFA Cup ahead of Porto.

Summary

Danny Gamble has a serious job on this summer – after bringing in reams of talent over the past two seasons, his first batch of signings all look to be leaving this summer, believing themselves to now be deserving of a bigger club. Can he replace them well? So far, he has done well, bringing in the excellent O’Neill for the departed superstar Ryan Morley, but he needs to spend well this time around to maintain the Bandits’ comfort in the middle of the Championship.

Once again they got within one game of European football, before they were denied in the League Cup final. Has the run exposed them to players who now wish to join?

The last of the original Bandits will be retiring this summer, both keepers calling time on their 26 year playing careers to move into management. Can they become full time managers, unlike the other three in coaching roles around the country?

Chelsea returned to the summit of the Premiership this season, but it was close, with West Ham pushing to regain the title they won two years ago. Who will win it this time around? Can QPR push on a little further to win it for the first time, after three runner up spots in the last thirteen years?

Bandit’s former manager watch

Justin Edinburgh’s Everton finished exactly where they did last season – 16th in the Premiership, and like last season, he led them to cup success, ironically against his former Bandits employers in the League Cup final.

After one season of success, Steve Brackstone was fired by Bolton after they fell to 17th in the Championship. It didn’t help them, as they fell another spot to finish 18th. Meanwhile, Brackstone was hired by Norwich when they were also 17th, and took them to the heady heights of seventh, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot on goal difference after drawing on the final day.

Gary Perry continued his Sheff Utd revival, taking a side so nearly relegated to League Two only two seasons ago to the League One title, winning the league by a massive ten points to return to the Championship.

Dean Glover has retired.

Martin Lawton helped Wrexham rise one more spot to tenth in League One.

Apart from Morley, who moved to Chelsea for 8m, and was far too good to be playing another season in the Championship, Danny Gamble avoided the loss of any of his key players summer, augmenting the squad with a bunch of new signings, all with the ability to reach around 150 CA.

However, with Perrin moving on this summer, possibly joined by Bartley and Spellman, whose contracts run out, he will have to make some excellent signings just to ensure the club don’t go backwards.

They’ve gone in the right direction this season despite the loss of a key player, can they do it again when more leave?

At the bottom end, the squad is quite consistent, but there is a lot more bulk between 110-130, which is a measure of the strength of players coming into the club. With 25 players now rated 110+, not too many players below this level should be required.

The bad news is that both 150+ players are likely to leave this summer, so will need serious replacement so that the squad strength does not slip backwards.
