FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Thanks for the reply. It has an AMD Radeon shared graphics card which I know isn’t the best. My previous laptop was much less than this and ran the 3d fine (i3 4GB ram etc) so I think it will be so much better to what I’m used to. I have read that this laptop will play games like sims and Roblox to a good degree and surely fm25 won’t be as graphics heavy (I feel it will turn a lot of ppl away if it was due to computer upgrades etc)

Would you(or anyone else reading) have an alternative for around that price? Currys/argos work for me as I can put a bit of it on 0%credit

Thanks

In basic terms I would try to find one with a dedicated graphics card. Not that I think this won't cope but in terms of value for money and long term use.

ok, you guys want portability.

sorry didnt know

but, about FM working, Im a tech guy and testing FM on my PC and FM is not heavy on cpu total usage at all, it never goes more than 18% of the cpu usage when gaming, processing or in match,..

but its ram heavy and disk usage heavy.

because all that work and data and loading, its very heavy on RAM.

wich laptops always have less RAM and slower ram. also ssd's on laptops at low price points are always slower

buying a 16gb ram laptop now will be at 80% RAM usage on windows 11 when playing FM24

in 2 FM versions the 16gb will fall short. if FM24 is at 80%+ RAM usage, i cant imagine after FM25

laptops with 32GB ram are very expensive compared to pc's

recently had to update ram to play better FM25 and the ones coming next...

i know you want laptops but cheap laptops will fall short, unless you spend a lot of money

I play on 8gb RAM - granted I haven't really progressed further than FM12. I'm a bit behind.

But still run Adobe programs, InDesign 2024, Photoshop, Illustrator
It's a bit slugish - but does the job.

This is why the guys here recommend 16gb minimum these days.

FM is still processor intensive over graphics intensive, which is all I meant.

I got that from FM developers themselves.

Maybe it's changed.

---

In regards to cheap laptops

People here sometimes don't have a lot of money - which is fine - which is why when they come with a low budget no computer is recommended and just to keep saving.

But sometimes there's a bargain or a refurb that will work for them.

All we want to do here is give people the information for a computer that will run FM for their budget.

Computers vary and are confusing for people - so having knoweldegable people like yourself to guide people for their budget is always welcome.

And of course, you can recommend a desktop PC - which is well and good, but keep in mind people won't always have a monitor - so that's an added cost to be aware of.

At the end of the day - this thread for a computer for FM have been running for years and years and been very successful for people.

Perhaps I need to wait and see what comes along for FM25 spec wise. The one you have sent is great but it is out of my budget for now. Shame as I have a huge urge to play FM24 now but think in the long run it’s probably for the best

Just to let you know Currys have the same Laptop - I think - On eBay refurbished  c grade so it has marks £509 and about the cheapest you get that for but it might be worth noting that listing in case eBay or Currys put up a discount code in the next few days.

Thank you to you both. I think a combination of waiting for one of these to drop in price or the specs to be released for the next game it will be. Really appreciate the time and effort, don’t know how people like me cope without guys like you helping out!

Cheers

I guess the answer is going to be that we don't know until the specs are released for FM25, but I'm wanting to pick up a gaming laptop soon, with a pretty high budget, but I know that FM will be the main thing I use it for when travelling.

Is a 14 inch screen reasonable, or do people find them too small when playing FM?

And if I'm wanting to upgrade my desktop anyway, is it worth doing them both in one machine that I'd use for more graphically intensive games like Cyberpunk, or better to get a cheaper laptop that can handle FM pretty comfortably and upgrade the desktop separately?

Cheers!

I'd say the 14 inch laptops would be ok, but keep in mind that they are designed for portability, and this means they usually put processors in there designed to run slower to preserve power, this is called throttling, or in simple terms the processor is designed to conserve power and heat consumption.

Not all are. And those that aren't are usually much higher price points.

What's the budget?

And if you have a seperate budget for the desktop?

I'm open to spending around £2k, but there wouldn't be a rush for the desktop, that can wait. However I go to the states for a few weeks in June, so I'd like to either have a laptop by then, or get one there as the electronics seem to be cheaper there! Probably looking for stuff like build and chassis quality, good cooling and noise management, rather than raw graphical power- I'd be hoping to invest in something good to use for a good few years.

There are a couple of things to consider. In the US there is often sales tax which isn't mentioned on ticket prices, so the cost may be higher than you see quoted. Depending where you're from the keyboard will be different. The power supply will have the wrong plug which may or may not be able to be resolved with a new power cord. Finally, unless you want to post your laptop back you won't have a warranty. Personally, I'd buy a laptop locally every time.

Re the 14" laptops thing, depending on specification they will perform similarly to bigger laptops. The main compromise you have with them these days is that they can be noisier if put under sustained load and they may be more susceptible to dust blocking cooling. Secondly there is generally less connectivity, though for gaming that's not usually a big issue. Of course, there is also a price premium for having the same configuration in a smaller package.

Yeah, took that into account, and decided to go for it anyway. Got a lower spec (4060 card) ASUS Zephyrus G14 (2024) from Best Buy ordered to a friend's address for just over £1100 after the sales tax. I don't think the equivalent model is available here, only the one with the 4070 card in, but that one costs like £2300 with identical specs otherwise.

I think for on the move, that should be more than good enough. IIRC US and UK keyboards are slightly different, but I can live with that, and would be using a larger keyboard when home anyway. And yeah, I believe the power cords should be cheap enough, but also adapters aren't too bad to travel with.

Basically, for the vast amount saved, I think it's worth it for me, but that's predicated on the fact I was already going to the states and the specific laptop I was eyeing up.

Fair enough, if that's the one you want. As long as your eyes are open doing it. If your friend is sending it to you maybe get them to do some tests on it first

hi : ) looking for a laptop to play FM24 (not so interested in FM25) I am more interested in how many leagues I can load and how many years into the game I can advance without significant slowness in my processing time than I am with graphics. I play 2D and intend to continue with that, usually just using 3D for goal highlights, but that isn't a necessity. I think my budget maxes out at £500 (maybe I can stretch to 6 at the end of the month when I get paid again) thanks in advance

Thing is with Laptop processing and graphics tend to get matched to a games laptop. Perhaps you should look a the business end of HP or Lenovo where the system is designed for Exel spreadsheet work. But really you aim is ideal for building a desktop where you can pick and choose parts. You could get 36gb ram and fastest SSD inside your budget I suspect.

Hi, after recently falling victim to an online scam, thought money had been sent so mailed my laptop only for no money, I want to get a new gaming pc, aslaptops tend to sound like they are about to take off. I'm looking at an i7 with a 4070 graphics card, is this over kill? Or better for future copies of fm? I'm turning 40 next week and wondering if it's time to hang up my tactics board?

We don't have system specs for FM25 as yet - so a 4070 will be overkill for FM24, we can't really say with any degree of confidence re:  FM25.

If you let me know your budget, I can have a look at what's around for you.

I turned 40 over 2 years ago and I'm not stopping!!

The systems I've been looking at are £1500 ish, then would need monitor etc, thinking of speaking to pc specialist. Good to hear, I do keeping thinking of streaming and YouTube but wonder if I'm a bit old for that now too haha

That's about the right sort of price for an i7/4070 combo.  And I'd not agree with you being too old to stream or do Youtube seeing as you're younger than me, and I do both (albeit the Youtube isn't gaming stuff)

You could save a little bit by swapping out the CPU to the 12th gen i7, which would still offer excellent performance.

You are never too old to start anything. I worked with my hands till I was 45, then moved house and decided to go to Uni as a mature student. From there I got a job sitting at a desk but earning 3 times as much messing with IT and Internet things. I left that to start my own business selling football memorabilia. Now coming up to 65 I would do streaming but the only things that stop me are a) I'm dyslexic and b) I'm a Brummie and that accent just anoys the hell out of people I'm told :-) Its you life mate, and you only get one so do what you want to do, as long as you are no harming anyone else get on with living life not reacting to it.

Now as for your PC, if you are spending £1500 on a system produced for games it should run anything for the next 5 years.

It's ok, but you are looking at a 4 year old CPU there.  For a little bit more, you can get something quite a bit better:

Thank you. Will have a look into it , there are so many options. It used to be a much simpler choice for CPUs. :)

Nope, no sponsored links here!  I'd feel bad resorting to that, it'd be like I was doing it for the wrong reasons lol.

The exception to that is my affiliate link I have for when the game itself comes out, which last year the SI forum mods allowed me to post,  But nothing like that when it comes to this thread, as it'd feel kinda underhanded.  A few people have offered to Paypal stuff to me as well, but I've always refused and asked them to donate to charity instead.

I wonder if PC Specialist would consider a "sponsored" link which gave people a small discount and donated to charity... Or another PC builder of course

No idea.  But, I tend to look at a range of stores anyway and just recommend what is best value that I see and it kinda goes in waves.  When I started doing recommendations a few years ago, PC Specialist often came up cheaper than pre-builds, and for quite a while until recently pre-builds were coming in a lot cheaper.  Currently it's fairly comparable, so in those cases a custom build is going to win because you won't get the manufacturer bloatware included.

I also used to like using box.co.uk for latops because their search function was far better than all the other stores, but then they became uncompetitive before going into administration!  They are back again, but I'm a little bit wary about them given their recent struggles.

@kevhamster Interested in your opinion on the AMD 7000 Series or GTX 4060?

The 7600 I posted and 4060 are kind of equivalent to each other.  Both have points which are stronger as well as weaker as the other.  The 4060 does score a little higher overall, but I included the 7600 in that build because it was a bit cheaper than the 4060.

Purely for FM, I don't imagine you'll see a difference between either card.

Other games, results will vary - based on results I've seen in some cases the 4060 comes out on top, and in others the 7600XT comes out on top.  I don't think you can go wrong with either card, but the AMD card does have the bonus of having more VRAM.

As with others who have posted what seems, well to me anyway, slightly old stock or more basic laptops, I would say you'll get far better value spending £500 on the second-hand market. No question it'll run the game now and almost certainly the new version but ... One minute eBay search throws up for £440 - ASUS ZenBook 14 OLED UX3402VA Intel Core i5 13 Gen 16GB 512GB SSD as a posed to yours - i3 12 gen poor display laptop. Not saying the Zenbook is the way to go but hope you see where the value is between the two. Best wishes,

The benchmarks I can see suggest there's not a huge difference between those two CPU's, so personally I'd stick with the i5 given the i7 adds 20% on to the cost.

However, if you are thinking of FM25 and beyond then the issue is currently we don't have system requirements for that, we just now they will increase and these models do not have dedicated graphics cards which possibly will be a lot more necessary for FM25.

On that basis, and given you'd have been happy to spend an extra £100, if you need to buy a laptop now I'd suggest this one.  You have a very good CPU and a dedicated graphics card:

http://www.currys.co.uk/products/msi-cyborg-15-15.6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-rtx-2050-512-gb-ssd-10253504.html

If you don't need to buy right now, then it may possibly be worth waiting until FM25 system specs are announced.

Well good it's the one I've been using for a while and it's on it's 3rd case, so I know for a fact the socket is just a cable you can buy for a few quicd. In fact, you can get a replacement motherboard for around £100 on eBay. It's not a hard job and may be worth investigating on Youtube and checking the cost of the part on eBay. That Laptop is more than capable for FM24 and I assume FM25 as well. You can even overclock using the MSI afterburner. What you got to loose by having a go? £5

Man, I really hate computer repairshops, they are the new car mechanics and will rip off anyone if it saves them doing work, The reason they have told you that is the MSI is a bit time consuming so they expect to spend 1-2 hours to change a part that cost £5. I suspect they think you won't pay £100.

Funny thing is my laptop is still working and still charging, the way the repair shop guy was talking the laptop was donald ducked and I needed a new laptop.

Sadly Computer repair shops are now the new car repair garages for trust. Not many really know what they are doing when it comes to repairs. MSI laptops are pretty easy to swap parts, the only really problem is the plastics are a bit delicate and the mouse pad is glued in so if that wears out its a problem so I cover that with wide tape to give it some protection. I currently use 2, one for video watching and one for FM game-play and neither one is worth £150 but do the jobs needed.

Looking for a replacement desktop as mine is on its last legs, I tend to use the 2D engine but like running a lot of leagues.

I play a few old school games otherwise but nothing modern or demanding. Mainly use it to watch media whilst playing FM

I don’t have a massive budget so £400-600 ideally.

saw this on Amazon and with the £170 voucher seemed a good deal but I thought I’d check in here for your thoughts

The main issue here is a lack of a dedicated graphics card, which I'd generally recommend seeing as we don't know what the requirements will be for FM25.

these ones caught my eye as well, mainly due to the vouchers making them very affordable, sorry to be a pain but on a greater inspection my budget is more around £400.

The one you posted will be fine for FM24 with the 2D match engine, and 3D on lower settings.  I'd choose that over the other two, as the first one has a CPU from 2012 in it, even with the graphics card being a dedicated one, and the second one has a less powerful CPU than the original one.

Hello all.

My laptop bought back in 2018 is so painfully slow it takes 30 seconds to even open the Snipping Tool. I'm done with it and am close to smashing it up with a hammer.

Can anyone recommend a good laptop for running FM24 and using Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint? I don't care about the size of the laptop, all I can about it speed and being able to run FM smoothly and not chugging like a steam train. Being able to play the game with the top graphics on would be a welcome change too. I'd also like a laptop that wouldn't be out of date that quickly.

At present, I've saved £500 but could probably go to £750 soon.

Thanks in advance oh Technological Messiahs.

Hi I used to play FM on my laptop but it's getting old. So I started playing fm24 on my apple tv. It's ok but I miss the full game experience.

So I'm thinking of getting a new laptop. Do you think a Macbook pro M3 Pro is overkill for FM? My budget is £2000 but I'd like to be under that if possible.
