Hi @Smurf I got £1000-£1200 to spend on a new laptop for FM, I don't tend to play other games other then FM2020 so it don't have to have a massive GPU.

I just want to play FM as quick as possible and also be able to add a few leagues, large database etc.

The laptop I have  at the moment is pretty good, it is a Medion Erazer P6661, here are the specs

  • Display diagonal: 15.6 inch.
  • Processor: i7-6500U.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M.
  • Internal memory: 8 GB DDR4-SDRAM.
  • Storage: 1256 GB HDD+SSD.
  • Battery: 4 hrs 44 Wh.
  • Weight: 2.27 kg.

I am going to use my old laptop as my media centre connect to my tv.

I  would like an upgrade to the laptop I have now.

I have seen 2 Laptops on box.co.uk

Here are the links to them

https://www.box.co.uk/Medion-Erazer-X15801_2613622.html

https://www.box.co.uk/30026383-Medion-Erazer-X15803_2496889.html?wgu=13045_116019_15753284217643_58b590e232&wgexpiry=1583104421&utm_source=webgains_116019&utm_medium=webgains&utm_campaign=affiliate

The first has double the RAM but as we know RAM isn't massively important, has slightly better CPU as well etc.

The 2nd one I think has slightly better GPU etc.

Can you have a look and let me know which one you reckon I should get or if there is any alternatives you have seen on Box.co.uk.

The reason why I want to buy it from box.co.uk is cos I only live an hour away from their shop and I can just go buy it on Saturday.

I also had issues with noise coming from the Medion Erazer which done my head in a bit, so can you consider that when you reccomend please @Smurf

https://www.box.co.uk/Medion-Erazer-X15801_2613622.html

This one all day long.

The other one as you say has a slightly better GPU, but the one here is still very strong and everything else on this one is stronger.

Cheers for that mate much appreciated.

I have a quad core 3.0ghz cpu it says so on the PC so 4 times 3 is 12? Im not really tech savvy at all, i just go by whats on the screen.

This laptop will be 90% of the time for FM only, but my step son may want to play GTA V with all the bells and whistles in terms of mods. Is that possible too?

Without knowing the system requirements of the mods it really is impossible to say, that said the laptop you posted is strong in all areas including the GPU so should definitely handle GTA V in its vanilla state without any issues.

Hi i have recently bought a medion from box and you are correct, the noise can crank up pretty high, but honestly, fm doesn't run my system had at all so the fan never spins up fast enough... i've found the cooling mat im using, along with the laptops cooling solution already keeps it pretty cool so i manually crank down the fans if they start spinning up to much..

I can't see the specs of your laptops right now as box seems to be down? but i'm impressed so far with what i have.

Edit : i've only just seen you already tried the erazor and  didn't get on with it... i'd try a model with a different chassis then and stay away from erazor's... talk to the guys in store and see what they say, i've been emailing box a lot recently for business reasons and have found them generally helpful, especially considering the time of the year.

Thank you for your advice buddy, I think the reason why my old laptop was noisy was cos I wasn't using a cooling pad and I also aint got a clue how to manually crank down the fans. Any idea how you do that?

I'll let Smurf recommend you others himself, but between those two it's a very easy choice, especially if FM is the only game you play, the first one is definitely the better deal.

Would you consider this?

You should have a pre installed app called control centre

dSJdiYJ.png

But there are plenty of other apps out there to control fans.... google it..

That said, it comes with a warning... there is a good reason for fans to work hard.. so dont set the thresholds of the fans too low or you'll overheat your cpu and gpu etc...

I have this.. the cpu is top notch for FM and all it needs is another stick of ram (£30) and you're good to go for a long long time..

That looks good mate, really good price as well.

I play FM 19 on a T430 lenovo. I use 2D which i also prefer and i play the game on low specs with not that much leagues clicked on etc. It works fine and has a nice speed too. The laptop looks solid on this. But i was wondering is this laptop also good enough for FM 20? Thanks for the help.

Specs:

i5 3320M 2.60Ghz
8 GB ram

So @Smurf and @Welshace could I get a decent upgrade to my laptop for less then £1,000 as I am happy to spend less if there aint much difference.

Here are my specs on my current laptop again to give you an idea what I am working with.

Display diagonal: 15.6 inch.

Processor: i7-6500U.

Any of those posted above by either of us is a massive upgrade to yours currently...  the one i posted above for £699 has a cpu that is 64% faster in effective performance and 88% faster for quad core performance... .. the other ones posted that are more expensive will be better in theory but FM won't push them that much and imo it isn't worth spending over £800 for a laptop purely for fm

(that said, i play AAA games on this laptop on the highest quality so its a great gaming laptop in general

Good processor, double the ram, better graphics card - all the things for longevity.

Yeh you can go cheaper if you want and go a processor generation down, and less ram, and lesser graphics card - and spend a lot less.

It's up to you - I was working within your specified budget and what you can get for your money.

I agree with everything Smurf said here apart from the middle line, which could be misconstrued to mean you are downgrading massively.

The 9750H's gains over the 8750H are miniscule in real world tests, and ram is £30 .... you're essentially paying almost £400 extra for a graphics card upgrade, which isn't needed for FM when  the cheaper laptop's graphics card is massively overpowered for FM anyway.

Either way, it's cool they get all the info and different options

Thank you @Smurf and @Welshace I really appreciate the advice.

It's about £60 to upgrade the RAM.  The 9750H is better thant the 8750H - even if it's marginal - which I don't agree with, I think it's a good bit better.  As you're better of buying a 16gb Pair to ensure latency is ok.

Anyway - the graphics card is better here by a good bit - and if you wanted to play other games than FM then it would be the one to to for.

This is a factor in increased price. And in fairness, the other one recommended was 999, and this was only a few quid more, which gave a sizeable increase in graphics card.

And I would put the build of the HP up there to be better than that of the Medion - which would be a factor in price as well.

I can't really tell what motherboards are used in each and I'm not going to look them up, but I'd wager HP are better in this than Medion.

Anyway - just my two cents. And if the budget is there, why go cheap - buy cheap buy twice.

Nah, £30 .. the 8gb ram comes on one stick.. matching ram is £30 right now to double it, but i take the rest of your points on board

I think paying extra can give a bit of a nicer build - but if it's just for FM it's hard to justify the money. Yeh, the cheaper model will be fine.

Actually should have priced up a PC Specialist or Overclockers in that price bracket - get a much better build.

Haha don't be confused.. it's just two different ways of going about it...

If you want the very best you can get for the budget, don't go along with something like i was suggesting, there are much better options out there such as what Smurf was suggesting..

Or if you want to spend less but still upgrade over what you have, there are plenty of options for that too...

If you give us a bit more info about your needs and your budget, we can get closer to an option that fits

Yeah so I just want a decent upgrade to what I have now, I want a laptop to last me at least 3 years or more without too many performance issues.

Price range well I am happy to pay £1000 for the right laptop but as you have said if I can get something nearly as good and way better then my current laptop as cheaply as possible then that would be awesome as it gives me more money to spend on other things that I fancy, I want to get a cooling pad as well and maybe a laptop bag etc.

I just want a decent laptop to play FM on, basically just an upgrade to what I have now.

Any advice or laptop suggestions are much appreciated.

What do you consider a decent performance in game? how big a database? how fast is fast enough for you?

I guess the question is.. what's wrong with your current one at the moment?

The reason I spent over £1300 is because I always try and buy something that will last me at least 5 years. My current desktop: i7 3770 - 16gb RAM (recently upgraded from 8) has lasted me almost 7 years, I would imagine my new one: i9 9900k - 16gb ram will last me just as long as that.

The main reason why I want a new one is wear and tear really, I have had it for aboug 3-4 years and also the laptop I use that is my media centre that I have connected to my tv is really old now so I want to use my current laptop as my laptop connected to my TV and then get a new laptop to play FM.

When it comes to FM it depends on who I want to manage and what player database I need, for example if I want to do a youth only challenge then I don't need a big database but if I want to do a save where I unearth hidden gems then I need a bigger database.

I just want the option to have an in depth FM game for player database, leagues etc but also at a decent speed.

I hope that makes sense in what I put lol.

Yep defintely... sounds to me like you don't really need to push the boat out massively to meet your needs then.. as I said, the one i'm using currently is a massive improvement to your current one and i would have thought would suit your needs fine.... at that sort of price point you can get a whole load of options too.. might be worth doing as smurf suggested and going away from medion for better build quality and less sound?   i've got work to do now but will happily come back with some suggestions tomorrow :)

It's a desktop, and is starting to slow down quite a bit. The GPU in it is an old Nvidia GT 640 lol which has a FM graphics rating of 1 star, just in general it is starting to slow down, not just in FM. I've also read on here that loading thousands of players without adding the leagues saturates the market and makes it unbalanced. So if I want a lot of players in my game I load the league as playable which has a much bigger impact than just loading players from nations without the league. If someone from SI tells me otherwise then I will change my stance.

Also @roykela told me a few months ago that his upgrade from a 3570k to a 9700k was a massive difference in real life performance so that's one of the reasons I decided to go for it (again), yes, again as the last time I bought all the parts then sent them back! Well the ones that weren't past the 14 days return window which I misjudged (I thought everywhere had 30 days returns but obviously not!). I then had to sell the i9 9900k, RAM, SSD etc on ebay and I made around an £80 loss for nothing :rolleyes:

The CPU and GPU look great for the price but not seen it mentioned much.

Is there something wrong with it or have people just missed this offer for £600?

Still making downpayments on it :D
I don't regret it for a second. Still flying here
I think i was around year 2060 or something, with all leagues loaded and 380k players, and i was still amazed how quick it was.
Was happy with before the upgrade but the difference was very noticable after the upgrade.
The processing in FM20 seems to be even quicker. Could just be a placebo effect but it certainly feels quicker.

@Welshace What kind of setup can you run on this laptop? Over the last few FM's I tend to run larger databases, around150k players with as many leagues as possible. With graphics I tend to play on classic 2D but I assume this could handle the 3D if you're able to run AAA games to a good standard on this laptop.

I'm looking for something for work as well as FM so I'd also considered the ASUS TUF FX505 and the Acer Nitro 5

Absolutely, that gtx 1650 for the same price as the 1050 laptop is a steal IMO.

I mean not the best but £600 it's worth it. Seen similar specs going for 850

May be a little low on storage

A small amount of leagues and a lot of players can indeed make it unbalanced.
It will certainly be harder to sell players. As the clubs have a much bigger pool of players to bring in.
So a balance between leagues and amount of players is highly recommendable.
What a good balance is i wouldn't know, unfortunately.

There's no denying the 1650 is better than the 1050 and the 1050 ti that comes in the laptop I linked.... but you do get a significantly better cpu in mine  for the same price so its a matter of what you want really...  for FM the one i linked will be better no doubt, but it depends if you're happy going with medion over an acer or asus I guess...

The one i use is currently running  a 180k player database with 14 leagues on full detail and maybe half a dozen more on view only.. i'm in my 3rd season and havent experienced any slow down at all, graphics wise i run fm on full detail 3d with no stuttering or issues at all..

Steer well clear of that.  Although the clock speed is technically sufficient, those Celeron processors are not very good and you will likely have a a frustratingly slow game, plus it will be terrible for the 3D match engine.  Let me know your budget, your preferred setup for the game (as in countries loaded, database size, 3D or 2D) and whether you're looking for a laptop or desktop and I'll try to find an appropriate suggestion for you.

8 GB ram

Anyone...?

A small amount of leagues and a lot of players can indeed make it unbalanced.
It will certainly be harder to sell players. As the clubs have a much bigger pool of players to bring in.
So a balance between leagues and amount of players is highly recommendable.
What a good balance is i wouldn't know, unfortunately.

Thanks. It would be good if someone from SI could clear this up.

You should expect a similar performance on FM20 as you get on FM19.  So, if it works for FM19, it should be fine for FM20 as well.

But, download the demo and give it a try.

Thanks. Yeah it was oke on the demo. just if i use 2D and i think if i use not so much leagues etc. i hope it would be oke. We'll see.

I'm not from SI - but it's true and I remember having this discussion before with a member from SI.

Think about it:

5 leagues and massive database - you'd have players in limbo because squads are full and they don't sign anyone - so there would a lot more free transfers out there.

Bit of a waste of a massive database if you only need 5000 players to play 5 leauges (5*20teams = 100 *50 players = 5000 players) if you have a database of 50,000 players, where do the other 45,000 players go?

@Welshace I am buying the laptop you got, just a question about RAM though, what specific RAM would I need to get to boost it from 8 to 16 if I wanted to do that.

Also can you recommend anywhere that do decent cooling pads?

Just bump it up to 16gb when buying - not sure where you're buying from but that is all you need to do.

In regards to cooling pads - I've bought 3 in my lifetime - the first one I bought was about £10 and it's the one I use all the time now.

At some point I needed another cooling pad as I had 2 laptops - so bought a fancier one for about £50 - and it was terrible. Then I bought another one for about the same again - it was terrible.

Long story short, dumped the old laptop, moved the £10 cooling pad to the new laptop and still use it to this day.

Moral of the story is - you don't have to spend loads of money on it.

I can't find the one I have right now but if I do find it I will let you know.

Thanks @Smurf I already ordered the laptop now as I didn't see the option for 16gb RAM, I bought it from box.co.uk, I did ask them on Live Chat what DDR4 RAM I needed but they said they couldn't answer that and I would have to speak to Medion.

This is the laptop I bought Smurf https://www.box.co.uk/30026124-Medion-Erazer-P6705_2614018.html

Are you able to tell me what RAM I need to buy, can you post a link please so I can order it, I know how to put the RAM in but failing that my mate is a computer technician and he would do it for me.

Also going back to cooling pads, I saw this one that looks decent, what do you think ?

The medion looks like it has it's fan on the right hand side - so I'd be going for a cooler with a fan specifically in this location - that's where I fell down before, I had 3 fans in the centre and the fan was at the back of the computer.

If there's a fan on the right hand side it should be good to go.
