wynter
Welcome to my crack at the European Pentagon. It was a challenge at an old forum I was on with the following guidelines. You Must Load Germany, France, Italy, Spain and England Take control of a club expected to finish in the relegation zone ie 18-20 or 16-18 (Germany), after 12 games you can take charge of a club that have sacked their manager and are in the bottom three. Win the Champions League with a club from each nation that fits this criteria, once you win the Champions League you must resign and move on to the next one. You can change clubs mid-challenge if you think a more interesting/challenging one pops up, but you can only complete a nation once. No restrictions on Leagues Loaded, DB size or Manager Rep/Licenses Haven't managed any 'big clubs' in a while or really managed in the top leagues so thought it'd be fun to freshen things up a bit. With that in mind we've picked Stuttgart

vossmaj
Sounds interesting. I will follow. Thinking about taking this on for my next save, too, so I am interested in some details. Do the rules imply that you can only move to a club predicted to finish in the bottom 3 throughout the whole save or will you be able to move to top clubs later if they take you on? And what if after 12 weeks none of these clubs sacked their manager of already have a new one? And will you just take over or apply for the Job? Good luck with Stuttgart! Did Mario Gomez already join you?

Did Mario Gomez already join you? Yeah, start with a club expected to be bottom 3 and then work them to champions, this repeats in every league so for some like Spain it'll be more challenging. If a club in the bottom 3 isn't available after 12 games it's just a matter of waiting for one to pop up. Generally they'll be sacked within 12-15 but the rule stays there as it's more of a challenge. It's unlikely teams meant to come in the bottom three will have free openings after you've completed one step of the challenge barring convenient scenarios so it generally becomes a 1/3rd season waiting game and picking the right club when they pop up. It pretty much negates the prospect of a club like Juve having their manager leave and as they're sitting in 20th after 1-3 games you can just jump on board and have a relatively easier time. And no, Gomez wasn't expected to join. Had numerous chances to pick him up but I don't need/want him due to club philosophies and our striking options at the time being pretty good. 2 hours ago, NavyWolf87 said: How's Asano rated on FM18? wynter
Alrighty. bear with me for what will likely be a large update to catch up to speed. Season 1 Fixtures Our start was not amazing. For long periods in the first half of the season we were sitting 13-15th and had a brief flirtation with relegation sitting as far back as 17th for a game. It was largely a combination of a failed formation and my stubborness and when I eventually gave it up, poor experimentation and too much rotation which gave to incredibly disjointed performances. A late turnabout in form in late November through to the Winter Break did show promise heading into the 2nd half of the season and we backed that promise with some solid investment. Namely a star playmaker to bolster our offence in Filip Krojinovic - Loan We also eyed the next season and I risked the rest of our 4mil budget on a prospect. Jean-Manuel Mbom - 4.1mil With Krojinovic busy in the AMC role we needed to improve our centre midfiled stocks and Mbom had a similar level of quality to our options, but also room for massive improvement with gametime, which I fully intended to provide. A team now centred around Kroj proved to be much harder to beat and each result made us play better as we put on and 8 game run throughout the middle of the season to shoot up the table. A lackluster end to the season though put to bed dreams of a shock CL run and we finished 6th. Miles above 17th and provided a stable platform for the upcoming season. Youth Intake Golden Generation Huge result for us, although I'm not sure exactly how much time I'm going to get with these guy heading into the coming years. Hopefully I'll be able to mould them into a brilliant core, and also a nightmare for myself in the future. The most impressive of the group are the trio of: Matheuz Jalocha BWM with bagloads of potential and with the right mentoring could easily become a very well-rounded player. At this point he's a future first-teamer and likely to complete with Ascacibar for the BWM role for the next decade. Or I could mould him into a brilliant Regista with the right development. Robert Grundmann Perfectionist Personality and a very well rounded base. The only thing I don't like is the 'Runs Ball Down Left' attribute, everything else is amazing. Luis Fabiano Classic No.9 in the making and with Brazilian Dual Nationality, the two nations are likely to go to war in the next 4-5 years to get him on board. Tactics Lately I've been experimenting with Assymetricals and this save looks to be no different Fresh out of my Bulgaria save and still doing phenomenal work 4-1-4-1 DM WB Assymetric (Hilarious to see quoted on Twitter) 4-1-2-1-2 DM WB Assymetric (AMCL) 5-2-2-1 Assymetric (AML) Our primary tactic is the 4-1-4-1 but we have some phenomenal CBs both prospect and First Team wise so if I can get the 5-2-2-1 working then it's liable to see a lot more gametime in Season 2. Interesting tactics, do you have a screenshot of their average positions during a game? Didn't even know where to look for this (Thanks @BoxToBox) Is this what you were looking for? Generally how we fashion a lot of chances is the Enganche playing through the onrushing WBs ala Beck or Giraudo/Ailton, allowing the attackers to cut in (Raum and Mezzala) and find gaps for them to exploit. If it plays perfectly we have 4 players in and around the box with the WBs effectively becoming the 'Wingers'.
wynter
SEASON 2018/19 Transfers A good window with some solid investment. Chadrac Akolo ran into the unfortunate problem of being a right winger when it's the position I almost exclusively don't use. We were able to offload him and gain a great rotation option in Aissa Mandi though so I have no complaints. Major Transfers Maximiliano Gomez Criminally Under-rated Striker. The man does everything and he does it at a high level. Little room left for improvement but what's there is more than enough to centre a side around. Only issue he has is I wish he had a tad more pace, but as he's proved in matches so far it doesn't hold him back with 8/8 so far this season. Marcos Llorente Listed at Real Madrid and I wasn't too interested until our scouts rated him at 90. The 3 million is a small price to pay if he can meet that promise and he's slid into our midfield trio as a Regista. Strong passing and technique backed up by a high tackling stat so he adds some hidden steel to our midfield if he ever needs to make a tackle. Thiago Mendes Signed to be our RWB for this season, when he's played on the field he's been exceptional, however a Torn Hamstring has him coming back to us just now after a 3 month layoff and managing it will be vital as without him we lose a lot of our attacking potential. Moise Kean Loan from Juventus, but hopefully a permanent one with a 15mil Buyout Clause I can activate at any time. Most people play him as an AF/CF but our major weakness last year was a lack of a great Raumdeuter and his attributes are almost perfectly aligned with the role. It's an experiment, but one I'm pretty much set on. Federico Giraudo As a Torino Fan, this guy has been the heart of my backline on Several Occasions and with the right training can be one of the best Wing Backs in the world. Haven't used him since FM16, but he stills looks good if only a tad older. It'll be a race to extract as much of that PA out as possible before he turns 22. Europa League Qualifiers We started strong vs Crusaders, then an incredibly mixed performance vs Thun didn't bode well for the upcoming playoff and then the draw gave us one of Spain's Best Sides in Valencia. Too cocky, too underdeveloped and we were thrown out of Europe as a result after fighting back to take it to Extra Time in Leg 2. On the plus side, no distractions for this year as we mount an Assault on the Bundesliga. League A much better start than last year, although still mixed. It presents the ultimate flaw in my tactic in where if it works well it's great, demolishing Koln and beating Bayern. When it's off though, we have a tendency to get mauled and the Dortmund game was an absolute nightmare. Regardless, no-one's really been impressive as of yet and the League is quite close, albeit only being at the 8 game stage this was to be expected. Player of the Update Jean-Manuel Mbom Slowly starting to come into his own with some great performances in the Bundesliga.
wynter
A lack of games due to International Football but it's been a productive period. Transfers Joining for 11million at the end of the season. On the cheap because he demanded to leave and I had enough midfield coverage that he wasn't an immediate priority. We've also picked up two top prospects Half an eye on reselling them for profit in a couple of years but they might force their way into my plans through sheer quality. Fixtures We got thrown out of both Cup Competitions early, horrid result vs Darmstadt where we just never got going. League wise though, we're finding consistency and confidence is blooming with each match. No Europe or Cup to focus on, a blessing as well as a disappointment. No distractions as we try and finish as high up the table as possible.
wynter
Winter Break Update - Season 18/19 Decent Form to go into the Winter Break. We are scoring in abundance and the match vs Freiburg was a masterclass in showing off our offensive quality. I would say our biggest weakness though is still a lack of a High Quality AMC and with Grundmann only eligible from the beginning of next year we've sought to remedy that with another investment. Dani Ceballos Another Real Madrid Outcast finds his way into our first team and he still has massive potential to unlock. Easily our best AMC and a stop-gap as we get Grundmann up to speed over the next 18 months. League Table Holding on to the Top 4. So long as we can finish inside it and gain access to the Champions League, this season can be considered a resounding success. There's still another 17 games to go though and we need to find more consistency to make that Top 4 spot ours. From One Spaniard to another though Players of the Update Marcos Llorente Controlling our midfield from the deep and spraying some superb passes all over the pitch. 86% Passing Accuracy and he's the glue that allows our midfield to push so far forward, and still battle for possession. Together with Ascacibar the the two are ensuring we have at least 50% of the ball every match. Santiago Ascacibar

wynter
Youth Intake Nowhere near as good last year but that is to be expected. wynter
Jan-March Update - Season 2018/19 A near perfect period. One minor blip vs Koln where we just showed up and DID NOT play anywhere near our potential. Otherwise a loss away to Bayern was the be expected and we bounced back in fine form with a 3-0 pummeling of Dortmund when we returned to the Neckarstadion. Meanwhile a gret result vs Hoffenheim helped spread the gap between us and the Europa League as Berlin and Ingolstadt were expected and routine victories. Growing the Gap between ourselves and the rest of the table while also beginning to hunt down Dortmund after the latest result. Bayern are stretching out their lead though and we need to find a way to address that soon. Players of the Update Moise Kean 4 Goals and an Assist from his last 5 as the Raumdeuter role is finally beginning to click for him. Provides a great option out wide and the best aspect of his game is his lack of selfishness, playing a stellar role in our build-up play sometimes. Juan-Manuel Mbom His growth is accelerating and he's finding himself at home in the Mezzala role. His continued development is critical in achieving our ambitions in the near future. wynter
We've made some switches, abandoning our 4-1-2-1-2 for the 4-1-4-1 and it's made a huge difference in our run Also pivotal as you can see by the scorers list. Maximiliano Gomez has had an absolutely unstoppable run of form and has elevated himself to the 2nd highest scorer in the Bundesliga this season and Outright #1 after sharing duties with Donis for much of this year. 24 Goals from 28 Games in a system where the goals are split quite evenly between the Raum and the AF is incredible work. Outside chance of the title and one result off the CL, the final month will be an exciting finish.

wynter
End of Season We romped home in style including an epic comeback vs Freiburg where we roared back from 1-3 down in the 2nd half to snatch a stoppage time winner and drive Bayern right to the wire in our hunt for the title. How'd we go though? Inconsistency in the first half of the season cost us a famous title victory but we snatched 2nd from Dortmund in the final stages and with it an extra $10 million in prizemoney which is always useful. We also picked up a very odd record. I sacrificed a large portion of our future budget and our budgets for probably the next 3-4 season by forcing the Board to buy the Neckarstadion. 4.1mil in Rent per season and 20% of the gate revenue return to our hands and long term it's a smart decision setting Stuttgart up for future dominance even when I eventually leave. In terms of Awards the Bundesliga gave a lot out to our players and to myself with me claiming both the Best Manager and the Player's Manager Moise Kean picked up a shock nod for Player's Player, beating out a dominant Aubameyang And even though we have him for another 12 months I made the leap and brought him in permanently. Champions League Group Stages next season and we've used up our 18mil budget almost entirely on Moise Kean so if we make any transfers they're going to have to be incredibly canny. Timetxu
I'm having the very same problem in my German save. Can I see how Grundmann and Fabiano, your two newgens, are coming along? I'll update everyone from the First Intake For you (Or rather, every 5/4.5* we got) Also seeing as I never showcased them they do deserve a bit of the spotlight. First Intake Development - October 2019 Players in the First Team Robert Grundmann Panagiotis Genas Grundmann and Genas both were eligible for the league this season and Genas definitely has a high upside as an attacking wing back, provided I can get those defensive attributes up. Key focus areas for the next few seasons are Concentration, Marking and his Technique. Grundmann profited from a 4-5 week injury to Ceballos and me opting for him as my 2nd choice for the season meant he was always getting gametime. The injury, just gave him even more and he's accelerated a lot over the last 2 months since we brought him up. Players to Come Luis Fabiano Georg Exslager Koffi Olufade Mateuz Jalocha Olufade is a weird one. Everyone rates him as our absolute best prospect but when you look at him he doesn't really inspire wonder. Fabiano and Exslager have me contemplating a 2 Striker system for next year since the two of them are so incredibly talented while Jalocha has always been my personal favourite of the bunch including Fabiano and Grundmann so waiting very patiently for the day he can finally move into my First Team. The way it's panning out I might be looking for a F9-AF combo between Exslag and Fabiano, but it's a matter of getting the positions around them to work to make the tactic both effective and able to let them shine. wynter
Season 3 - Transfers Champions League Football has arrived at Stuttgart and with it the Transfer Bounty was bigger than ever. Promising the board another Top 4 Finish granted us an extra 7 mil to the transfer kitty and we immediately invested as Corchia and Ndombele ran straight into our first team. Sebastian Corchia The window was largely about strengthening our backline after Kean joined permanently and our midfield reserves were stacked. As such Jorge was still at Tenerife and we were able to pick up a very handy player with room to grow for a relatively cheap price. With Badstuber beginning to age and Pavard being moved on to Real Madrid after he demanded a move Jorge provides a strong rotation option with an eye towards first team football in the immediate future. My Personal Favourite pickup though, was Patrick Schmolzer I generally don't like CBs with poor tackling attributes and I do consider 10 poor for a prospective CB. Everything outside of that however is workable and at 17 it's a minor flaw that can easily come good with a strong supply of coaching and gametime which given the addition of European Games this season is something readily available. The Season Strong start with the minor exception of a horrendous draw with RBL after blowing a 6-2 lead. Consequence of going down to 9 men through a Red and Injury. Still a result I was absolutely livid with however. Bayern are already up with a 5 point gap but at the moment they're a secondary concern. Staying in the top 4 and balancing the group stages is the immediate priority for our team given our squad depth of only 26 players of which several are not first team quality. Any major injuries to the wrong players could see our season spiral. Maximiliano Gomez 8 Games, 6 Goals, 4 Assists 7.64 AR Flawless.

wynter
Let's get to it. Only 4 League Fixtures over the past month due to National Team Football. We've done well, 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss against some quality opponents. The loss to Wolfsburg was an aberration and we simply didn't turn up on the day. Luckily, we bounced back to trounce Schalke in brutal fashion. In the Top 4 after 12 games although I would prefer to be closer to Bayern. I did say in the last post this season was all about consolidating with a return CL appearance, but it would be nice to make them have to work a little harder. Dani Ceballos has been our most impressive player this month Our investment looks to be paying off after a string of brilliant performances over the last 2 months and he's really coming into his own this season. Interest as a result is swirling and PSG have been linked with a January move for him. Not quite sure if I want to sell him though especially since I gave him a 50% sell on clause in his contract to make his wages workable last season. As a sign of how well our tactic has been working and how strong we are offensively everyone's been working hard to take a share of the goals. I don't quite know why our Regista has 4 goals when he's really never meant to be anywhere near the box but Llorente's contribution while confusing is very valuable. Donis and Ceballos have also helped take the load off Kean and Gomez and given me the confidence to rest them our fixture list gets a tad too serious. I bring up my 100th game for the club in the next match in other news. And it's only been 2 years but I've worked my way into the supporter's hearts as well. wynter
Europe Shaky start but we found our footing. wynter
December Update 2019/20 Great spell of form to close out the year. An initial loss to Koln was unexpected but the match was thrilling to watch as we went goal for goal in a classic. A relatively easy win against Zenit sealed our qualification as the best team in ,Group D as Villareal followed us through to the knockout stages. The BMG result was the best of the month as we reigned them in to take 2nd headed into the 2nd half of the season, Bayern don't look to be dropping points though. Player of the Month Maximiliano Gomez 5 Games, 6 Goals, Two Assists 7.86 Rating Fantastic as always to go to 15 goals from 21 games for the year. His form hasn't gone unnoticed however and Dortmund are circling. While I wouldn't usually sell a player going that well for me... I've got some ideas depending on the size of the bid. wynter
Winter Break Transfers We had a lot of outgoings in relation to our main squad. Of those were some of our most impressive players this season but there was reasoning behind them all. It was a matter of balance and financial profit. For Zon-Ziler I was able to get in Perin on less wages and a cheaper pricetag. The same can be said of Villalba and Lucas Silva. I've been able to gain some financial muscle for next season with the movement and still kept the squad strong enough to orchestrate a European Run if everything plays out to perfection. Dario Neves was our biggest move of the window though, even if he won't be joining the squad for another season. I just like every aspect of him and another year of gametime at Millionaros should prime him to slot straight into our squad in 12 months. League We've kicked off in fine form with no loss to our momentum after the overhaul. Villalba hasn't entered our first team yet however, with Donis taking over the striking duties as he settles into the squad. Player of the Month Dani Ceballos 5 Games, 3 Goals, 3 Assists 8.73 Rating Dominant. He always pops up in just the right spot and orchestates our offense. His interplay with Kean and Donis in particular has been stellar of late.

If left to my own devices I can get through 6 months across a day. My game speed is pretty poor so working with what I have. It'd take 5-6 days to run through a whole season given time? Am looking at getting a new laptop in the next few weeks though because the one I have is pretty run down so that might improve in the future. I'll mainly be getting it for other stuff though so FM is a secondary concern.
wynter
Bournemouth Target Stuttgart Manager Mateo Lacroze has emerged as a surprise frontrunner for the vacant managerial position at Dean Court. Restaurant goers at the Valle Ristorante claim to have seen the Argentinian Manager with leading officials of the club and by all reports talks were positive. The move comes as a surprise given Lacroze’s success over the last two seasons and questions remain as to why a manager with a side currently competing within the Champions League would be willing to look at a relegation threatened team as Bournmouth currently lie in 18th position. With a proposed 60million dollar warchest at his disposal with the promise of even more in the summer, perhaps it comes as no surprise that Lacroze would be interested after operating on Stuttgart’s far more menial budget over the past few seasons. Struggles which have resulted in the sale of several of his star players to fund improvements to the team. The knowledge that Lacroze is interested in the position AND that he’s met with the club for an interview have seen his odds of getting the position firm and he’s now the bookies favourite to get the nod. Stuttgart are Lacroze’s first step into management following an exceptional career across the Europe, coaching at several of the best clubs in Europe from the age of 20. Results for the club have been highly impressive under his tutelage and the club is rapidly emerging as one of the strongest in Germany.
noikeee
Wait... Bournemouth? Why? Bored with Stuttgart? You're not that far from winning the Bundesliga in maybe a season or two... How's your tactics looking like now? They're always interesting. You mentioned a regista but I see no regista in those earlier posts.
wynter
Champions League Round Sixteen PSG vs Stuttgart Leg 1 1st Minute Kickoff for PSG Neymar moves it to Rabiot, Rabiot shifts it out left to Alex Sandro. PSG building the play up carefully as they push into Stuttgart's half from the get go. It's played to Mertens, who finds Verrati. Verrati to Cavani but tackled by Schmolzer! Rabiot picks up the rebound and floats a cross to the back post. IT'S DEMBELE GOAL 1-0 PSG 51 Seconds is all it's taken an Stuttgart have it all to do. 16th Minute Throw in for Stuttgart inside their own half. A long throw from Thiago Mendes finds Ceballos, Ceballos takes it down and switches the play, Kean heads it down to Ailton. Swapped out the 2 striker system, but the other two are the same Only problem is Kean out left, feel it's a waste with his finishing ability.
wynter
Sorry for the wait everyone reading, between Uni and other real life shenanigans I haven't had time to fully kick into Update Gear. Anyways here's an attempt to get back in the saddle. Champions League Leg 2 Stuttgart vs PSG Neckerstadion We went with our patented 4-1-4-1 AML against their standard, yet effective 4-2-3-1 Wide. I told the boys to get revenge after the heartbreaker away from home and we came into the match with confidence after dispatching Bayern 5-3 a few days prior in an epic. Revenge was a success Sterling effort from the lads with two late goals by Donis sending the French Champions crashing out of the tournament and us into the Quarter Finals. Match Stats Not a case of luck, we actually dominated them in very impressive fashion. Some nervy moments throughout though because PSG are still talented. Just a case of us wanting it that much more. Next Up
wynter
First Division Post-Winter Break Decent Form. Balancing Europe and the Bundesliga has been a bit of an issue because our depth outside of the first team while decent, isn't reliable enough to get consistent results just yet. An issue I'm looking to resolve with the addition of the First Generation Wonderkids next year + some savvy recruitment. All we really need however is Champions League Football and that's what we're keeping on task with. Could be better but it could be infinitely worse. Speaking of Wonderkids Another Golden Generation! Karagiannis has all the makings of an insane goalkeeper Unfortunately that absymal first touch wrecks his odds of being a sweeper keeper despite that 19 eccentricity. Odd attributes but a very serviceable GK to come. Feuerherdt has the horrid luck of coming in behind Jan Mast and I'll be moving him off to Bayern who are already sniffing around in the next window. I've had brilliant LB's coming in from everywhere for some odd reason at this club. Karagoz is much the same. Getting gametime off Exslager and Luis Fabiano in the future will be a real challenge for him. Worst comes to worst, I'll be able to sell them for a fair bit of money to top up the transfer kitty. BoxToBox
What an intake! I wonder could Sarpong be underrated PA wise, if he's already at 1.5* ca. I often find that happening.
wynter
Bringing back a slice of the past. Fell just short in Europe, demolished on the counter by Simeone which was unfortunate but reaching the Semis means we aren't far away at all, a slight positive to take out of a disappointing two legs. Finished the season in 2nd again, a little bit further behind Bayern this year, but again, I think the squad's stronger than the year before and as long as we keep qualifying for the Champions League, we're in good stead to build something special. Player of the Season Dani Ceballos Led the way with some beautiful playmaking in the centre of the pitch. He may have only played 24 games in the league, but that was due to the emergence of Grundmann who was finally eligible to play for the club. Looking to the future I've a few ideas, one of which being a 2 CAM system which will let both of them run riot. For now though, it's an interesting competition between two absolutely wonderful players for the starting spot.
noikeee
Not a bad job, Stuttgart can only dream of a CL semi-final in real life.
