Transfer News

The first move of the summer was in a way a surprising one, with Loic Flamilson finishing as 3rd top scorer in the SPL many people might have thought he would be the first to make a move. It was in fact the relegated team, Motherwell who lost their young star Jack Smithston. Although he was hardly a regular feature in the side he clearly did something to impress as bids from West Ham, Sunderland and Fulham flooded in, eventually he decided to sign for Fulham in a £130k plus clauses move.

Second to leave was Motherwell team mate Alex Rodgers, Wolves came knocking with a £100k plus clauses offer and Championship football was too good to turn down for the youngster.

Next to move was Mark Cator although after committing himself to Hibs earlier in the summer he didn’t make a permanent move and decided to spend the whole season on loan at Morton. I must say I’m slightly puzzled by this one as Morton gained promotion last year and are playing in the SPL so I’m not sure why Hibs would allow the loan but obviously Cator feels he’s in with more of a chance at Morton.

They're the only transfers that have taken place before August so I'll keep you informed about any more in the Race Report.

Great first season, after a slow start, I (Marky Mark) am happy with equal 8th... now that I have established myself as a member of the starting 11 at Aberdeen I should be able to chalange for the drivers championship next season... although it was fair to say that Loic dominated the first season and will take a fair bit of catching next season.

Great updates Whoopy, KUTGW!

OK here we go again and turns out I lied there was 3 transfers.

Race 1 - August

Although Loic Flamilson's future remains in doubt with a £3million + clauses bid on the table from Levski and several other clubs interested there can be no doubt what his main concern is, retaining his title. Loic got off to a good start from pole position scoring for Gretna in a 2-2 draw with St Mirren. Unfortunately for him arch rival Mike Billcliffe got the jump on him off the grid with both of Kilmarnock’s goals in a shock 2-1 win over Hearts, Billy Hawkins was in good pre-season form only but that only earned him an appearance from the bench. The only other Saturday game that saw any action was Morton’s 0-3 loss to Falkirk where the away team had Arthur White to thank for his 2 goals that helped them to a win in Mark Cator's debut for the home side. The final game of the opening fixtures game on Monday when Aberdeen beat Dundee Utd 3-1 with Elliot Druce scoring the consolation goal for the visitors.

Anybody who had visions of Loic Flamilson re-claiming his title could be sadly disappointed, as the Gretna fans are. Just 3 days after scoring his first goal of the season he made his move to Levski Sofia of Bulgaria and may have ruined his title hopes. (if nothing else it means my reports on him will be extremely limited)

Jack Villeneuve was thrown into the limelight for Gretna as his partner in crime departed but he couldn’t produce anything like the form of Flamilson in a 1-1 draw with Celtic. Elliot Druce is making an early claim for the title, he scored again for Dundee Utd this time in a 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock. Mike Billcliffe couldn’t follow up his two goals last week with anything more than an appearance while Billy Hawkins sat on the bench as speculation about his future continues with West Ham and Birmingham having bids accepted. On Sunday Mark Cator got his second appearance for Morton as they beat St Mirren 1-2. On Monday night Mikael Schøler scored for Falkirk in a 2-2 draw with Aberdeen and Billy Hawkins completed his move to Premiership Birmingham. The following weekend meant Mikael Schøler went head to head with Mike Billcliffe and although neither scored Falkirk came out on top with a 1-3 victory. Elliot Druce sat on the bench for a 2-1 loss to Rangers as his future looks uncertain, West Ham, Preston and Fulham have all made offers for the young star. Surprise of the day was Hearts awarding Brendan Petersen a place in the starting eleven, the youngster was keen to impress and in the 65th minute picked up a rebound to score his 1st goal for the club and helped them to a 3-0 win over Inverness CT. Sunday wasn’t a happy day for Morton they conceded 5 goals at home although they make take some consolation in the fact it was against Celtic and they did manage a goal, Mark Cator played but the decision to go on loan may not have been such a good one as it seems Morton don’t have the quality to score too many in the SPL. Celtic were so comfortable they gave Mark Webber 15 minutes at the end. Meanwhile Gretna put in a good performance without last seasons hero as they drew 2-2 with Hibernian, Jack Villeneuve played from the start and Andrew Billen came from the bench to score the equaliser for Hibs. On Monday Aberdeen comfortably beat St Mirren 3-0 with Nicky playing for the losing side.

On Friday Morton continued their poor start to the campaign with a 4-0 loss at Hibernian, Andrew Billen capitalised on the dominant performance and grabbed the second of the game. Celtic continued their dominant form on Saturday as they smashed Aberdeen 4-1, the away teams consolation goal coming from Marky Mark. Falkirk managed a respectable 0-0 draw with Rangers, Mikael Schøler played the full 90 minutes. Jack Villeneuve continued in the Gretna side as they lost heavily to Inverness CT, Mike Billcliffe and Nicky played in a game that ended 2-0 to St Mirren.

Mid-week fixtures meant the return of the League Cup, the first game saw another appearance for Andrew Billen as Hibs beat Airdrie 0-3. Lewis Hamilton and Nicky both played for St Mirren as they went out on penalties to Dundee, Nicky missing in the shoot out. Elliot Druce played for Dundee Utd in a 2-0 win, while Arthur White and Mikael Schøler played for Falkirk in another 2-0 victory. Mike Billcliffe played for Kilmarnock in a 3-0 win, Jack Villeneuve got booked for Gretna in a 0-1 win for them.

Another transfer took place before the weekends action, Fuzzy Lightning was previously unwanted but all of a sudden bids came flying in and within 24 hours he'd signed for newly promoted Hull City for £90k and if he gets played it'll be Championship football for him. Unfortunately he may have to wait because the young American broke his arm in a collision with Marky Mark. While Fuzzy may have to wait up to a month for his debut Marky will be out for atleast 3 months with a damaged achillies tendon.

So entering the final lap there was any number of people in with a shout of winning the first race of the season.

One of them was Elliot Druce who did all he could, scoring in a 2-2 draw with Inverness CT. Mikael Schøler played for Falkirk as they lost 4-0 to Hearts, Quick Nick making a surprise appearance from the bench. Mark Cator played for Morton again but they really are struggling to find the back of the net and lost again, this time to Jack Villeneuve and Gretna, unfortunately Jack didn’t score. Rangers got back to winning ways as they beat St Mirren 2-1 where Nicky came from the bench. In the final game of the month Kilmarnock gave Mike Billcliffe 25 minutes from the bench, 5 minutes less than Celtic decided to give Mark Webber as they won 0-2.

So it looked like the race was run however there was to a certain extent a forgotten man. Loic Flamilson, since moving to the mysterious lands of Bulgaria had been seldom talked about in these parts. But after last season, come the end of a race there can be no doubting he needs talking about. After playing and scoring once for Gretna he went on to make an instant impact at Levski Sofia, he played twice in the league and scored 3 times and twice in the cup where he also scored 3 times taking his tally since the move to 6 goals in 4 games. By doing so the Frenchman not only lived up to his hefty transfer fee but surely surpassed it and with yet another incredible month from Loic he steals the race win when many had written him off.

Driver of the Day - It's starting to become a tradition now but Loic Flamilson has to take it again, after a move to Bulgaria many doubted he would (a)play and (b) continue at the standard of last year. But the Frenchman proved us all wrong and stole the show yet again to open up an early lead for himself and his team in the championship.

I just had everything all ready to post and accidentally closed the window so player names won't be bolded in this report simply because I can't be bothered to do it all over again, sorry. icon_biggrin.gif

Race 2 - September

A midweek game between Dundee Utd and Hearts gave Elliot Druce the chance to take an early lead from pole position but he was substituted after 60 mins and failed to score. His stuttering start gave the rest of the pack a chance to take 1st position and Brendan Petersen took it, coming from the bench in the 80th minute to score in the dying seconds of time added on and rescue a point in a 1-1 draw, the Australian took the lead of a race for the first time.

Any momentum he was hoping to gain was halted by an international break and when SPL action resumed he wasn’t rewarded with any game time as Hearts drew again, this time 2-2 with St Mirren where Nicky came on in the last minute. Mark Webber came on to play most of the second half for Celtic in a 3-0 win over Rangers, Mikael Schøler played the whole game for Falkirk but didn’t score in a 2-0 win over Dundee Utd where Elliot Druce got 5 minutes and picked up a dead leg keeping him out for 6 days. Hibernian beat Kilmarnock 2-1, Andrew Billen picked up a booking and Mike Billcliffe came from the bench but neither got their name on the scoresheet. Finally the Saturday came to life when Mark Cator scored 2 goals for Morton, unfortunately they didn’t help his team avoid defeat as they lost 3-2 to Inverness CT. On Monday evening Gretna destroyed Aberdeen 4-0 with Jack Villeneuve playing and picking up a yellow card.

The following Saturday was all about a debut for one of our summer transfers, Wolves knocked 5 past Wigan and ten minutes from the end Alex Rodgers came from the subs bench to make his first appearance for the club. Back in Scotland Jack Villeneuve and Mikael Schøler both played for their teams in a 2-1 loss and a 1-0 win respectively but neither could score. Elliot Druce surprised everybody as he recovered from a serious dead leg to score twice for Dundee Utd in a convincing 4-0 win over St Mirren where Nicky played again from the bench. On Sunday Mark Cator played again for Morton as they picked up a draw against Aberdeen and Mark Webber came on again for Celtic in the 90th minute and managed to pick up a yellow card within 30 seconds.

Wednesday meant the return of the League Cup in England and Scotland and while nobody was involved in the south there was a little action north of the border. Elliot Druce played as Dundee Utd went through after extra time, Andrew Billen played for Hibs as they beat Morton and Mark Webber started for Celtic as they progressed beating Kilmarnock who had Mike Billcliffe in the starting 11. Jack Villeneuve finally stepped into Loic Flamilson’s shoes, scoring the equaliser for Gretna against Hearts but it wasn’t enough as Hearts won the penalty shoot out to go through.

Back to league action and the final lap saw one of the most open races so far, there was no clear leader and it was anybody’s guess who was going to take the win. Alex Rodgers was back in the team for Wolves and he managed his first goal for the club although he will be disappointed that it counted for nothing as they lost 3-4. Jack Villeneuve played again for Gretna but couldn’t continue his scoring ways, Mark Webber scored his first ever Celtic goal as he opened the scoring in a 3-0 win over Dundee Utd and first half sub Elliot Druce. Mark Cator played for Morton as they got a rare win over Kilmarnock, Mike Billcliffe got a consolation goal for the losing side and Nicky came from the bench to score St Mirren’s second in a 2-0 win over Falkirk who took off Mikael Schøler at half time and put on Arthur White with 10 minutes to go. On Monday evening Brendan Petersen played for Hearts again, this time getting on after 80 minutes. The opposition were Hibernian who had Andrew Billen to thank for opening the scoring in a game that finished 2-2. In Bulgaria Loic Flamilson had a poor month by his standards not managing to score at all in 4 games for Levski.

Driver of the Day - A fairly boring race so I suppose we’ll have to give it to the winner, Elliot Druce who puts himself in the lead of the drivers championship and has his team sitting second in the constructors race.

Just a little point of interest (or not) I was just looking at the players CA and noticed that one of them had not only failed to improve but had infact got worse since the start of the game. He's had no more or no worse injuries than any one else yet is sitting on CA 89, that's 11 less than we all started at.

Can anybody explain this random loss of CA and should I name and shame the player?

another decent start to the season. Currently 3rd in the championship standings. Still don't look too amazing from the stats, but I've stayed mostly injury free, it's all about consistency... I'm the Johnny Herbert of the FM world icon_biggrin.gif

Race 3 - October

So a boring race last month and fans were hoping for a much more exciting race this time around. Things certainly started with a bang for Falkirk fans, a 3-5 win over St Johnstone in the league cup replay saw a goal from Athur White take an early lead.

The league weekend rolled around again and Arthur White played again for Falkirk this time against Gretna in a 3-0 win, Jack Villeneuve and Mikael Schøler were also involved but all 3 failed to score. In the only other SPL game of the day Mark Cator Cator played for Morton in a 2-2 draw away at Dundee Utd where Elliot Druce looked to have scored the winning goal before Morton got back on level terms. In the Championship Alex Rodgers came on in the 90th minute for Wolves. Gretna boss Davie Irons obviously feels his young star isn’t performing as well as he should be, telling the press he was unhappy with Jack Villeneuve's recent performances. The striker responded in a positive fashion saying he also felt he should be doing better. Sunday saw a different story with the Celtic manager clearly very impressed with Mark Webber as he got a start against Inverness CT but failed to make an impression in a 3-2 win for his side. Mike Billcliffe made a substitute appearance in a 2-0 loss to Rangers, Nicky and Andrew Billen both came off the bench in a 2-3 win for Hibs against St Mirren.

Three midweek fixtures saw Jack Villeneuve and Brendan Petersen both come from the bench in a 3-0 win for Hearts over Gretna, Kilmarnock’s 2-2 draw with Aberdeen didn’t see any actions from our boys but Falkirk vs. Celtic saw plenty. In the 29th minute Arthur White tore his calf muscle as he swerved off the track desperately trying to defend his slender lead, he’ll be out for 4 months. As he was being subbed off the man he had so desperately been trying to stop, Mark Webber got away from his marker at the near post and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper to give Celtic a 0-1 win.

Another international break looked to be a good time to rest for the boys but one man was ready to make F1 sign up history and be the first to receive a full international cap. Somewhat unsurprisingly it was the man with the most U21 caps that was first to get his senior cap, coming on as a sub just 5 minutes into the game against the Faroe Islands. It was Welshman Andrew Billen who will have been very proud to play for his country but is probably more disappointed that it counts for nothing in the race.

Back in Scotland Mark Cator and Mike Billcliffe both played in 2-1 losses for their teams while Celtic destroyed St Mirren 5-0. Nicky played but picked up a slight knock early on and came off, the headlines were stolen once again by Mark Webber who headed in Celtic’s third with a near post flick from a corner. Down in the Championship Wolves made a somewhat strange decision to play Alex Rodgers for the first 29 minutes of the game before subbing him for no apparent reason. On Monday night Hibernian lost 2-3 to Falkirk who had Mikael Schøler in the starting 11 and with their victory rocketed in to 2nd in the SPL although 6 points behind Celtic.

On Wednesday a St Mirren victory lifted them off the bottom of the table, Nicky came on as a sub.

Saturdays games allowed Mark Webber to continue his run in the Celtic team although this time from the bench in a 3-0 win over Hibs, Andrew Billen also played from the bench. Jack Villeneuve played for Gretna in a 1-1 draw with St Mirren, Mark Cator played for Morton but will be disappointed to be on the end of a 5-2 thrashing by Falkirk. Mikael Schøler was on hand to head home the third and only his 2nd of the season. On Sunday Elliot Druce made a return to the Dundee Utd team in a 2-1 win over Aberdeen, only for him to pick up a dead leg after 24 minutes and have to be removed from the pitch. The final game of the day was a face off between Brendan Petersen and Mike Billcliffe, both started for their sides and it ended in a 1-1 draw. Mike Billcliffe will be the happier of the two as he came away with the equalising goal in the 87th minute although he picked up a booking aswell.

The final lap rolled around and as is often the case the last match was to be a league cup affair. In the English League Cup Hull gave a debut to Fuzzy Lightning who is just back from his injury. Unfortunately for the American they lost 2-0 to Man City. North of the border there was very little excitement, Andrew Billen Billen played as Hibs went through on penalties, Mikael Schøler was involved in a 2-0 win for Falkirk, Elliot Druce recovered to play in a loss against Hearts who gave Brendan Petersen a start and Mark Webber continued in the Celtic side as they recorded a 0-3 win over Rangers.

At the start of the lap Mark Webber had been leading the way and the fans fully expected him to take the win but, as he came into the final sector news began to reach the fans of a not totally unexpected challenger. They came round the last corner exactly level with each other and Webber's failure to score in the cup game could have cost him the race win, as it was he would be sharing the points with the ever present figure on the podium of Loic Flamilson. The Frenchman had an identical month to Webber 5 games and two goals and it showed that after an off month last race he is still very much a major competitor for the title.

Driver of the Day - A first race win, all be it a joint one and a first driver of the day for Mark Webber. He may have finished level on points with Loic Flamilson but he surely deserved the win after breaking into the Celtic first team, keeping out some of their bigger stars. Loic Flamilson proved that he is still as hungry as ever to win his second drivers title, watch out for him next race.

A fairly silly mistake on my part meant I forgot to check SPL games on the Wednesday and Lewis Hamilton played and scored for St Mirren meaning he claims an 8th place finish and 1 championship point. All that changes is he goes in at the bottom of the drivers championship and Team 12 is on 6 points not 5.

Race 4 - November

After a wonderful race last month Mark Webber started at the front of the grid and get off to a dream start, he opened the scoring for Celtic in a 3-0 win over Morton, Mark Cator started the game for the away team. Andrew Billen was on the losing home side as Hibs lost 1-2 to Gretna, the visitors had Jack Villeneuve to thank for the winner as he slotted past the keeper from 18 yards. Mikael Schøler played for Falkirk in a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock and Mike Billcliffe who doesn’t seem to be able to hit the scoring form of last year. The final action for Saturday was a 2-4 win for Hearts over Inverness CT, Brendan Petersen rounded the keeper on 87 minutes to score from a tight angle before being subbed just a minute later. Lewis Hamilton impressed sufficiently in his last game, he started for St Mirren but couldn’t score and was replaced in the 2nd half by Nicky

The only action midweek was a goal from Andrew Billen in Hibernian’s 1-1 draw with Inverness CT, he started and finished the move with a powerful strike. That was until Thursday night and the Uefa Cup rolled around and OB of Denmark welcomed Hearts. A tough game for the Scottish side and they went 1-0 down after 11 minutes. Just 7 minutes later Australian Brendan Petersen made himself a hero, he scored a vital goal to get his team back on level terms, they went on to win 2-3 and Brendan flew through the field to lead the race.

Back to SPL action and only one game on Saturday and a boring game at that, Mark Webber played for the away side in a 0-0 draw between Gretna and Celtic. On Sunday there was again just one game in the SPL, Aberdeen beat Falkirk 3-2, Mikael Schøler played for the losing side. The weekend slump was soon made up for on Wednesday, Elliot Druce got his first game of the month and scored his first and second goal of the month as he helped his side to a 3-0 win over Hibernian. In the other game Rangers went down to an own goal at home to Hearts, Brendan Petersen maintained his lead as he got an appearance from the bench. However the action was not to end there, after 17 goals in 15 games at U19 level he had certainly been demanding the attention of Walter Smith and on 81 minutes Haowan was introduced from the bench to make his Rangers debut.

Before any more racing could be done, Andrew Billen picked up his first international start for Wales in a 0-2 friendly loss to Greece. Another international debut was also handed out, 8 goals in 3 games at U21 level had clearly impressed and quite rightly Fuzzy Lightning was given 10 minutes for USA in a friendly against St Vincent.

A fairly short race is drawing to an end and with only one match in the SPL some of the boys in England might have been looking to take advantage, unfortunately only Fuzzy Lightning could manage a game and that was from the bench in a 1-1 draw with Middlesboro. In Scotland Mark Cator played for Morton in a 2-0 loss to Rangers.

Going into the last lap it looked like Brendan Petersen was on for a win, the rest of the field wasn’t far behind though and as we all know anything can happen in football. But before anybody could get carried away news from Bulgaria filtered through to the fans. He came out of nowhere last month to take 1st, this month he had been in fine form. In the first two games he scored 6 goals, a hatrick in both, he followed that with 2 goals in his next game before failing to score in the last game of the month taking him to an incredible record of 8 goals in 4 games. The Frenchman was way out in front and for all but a miracle he would be taking the victory, playing for a smaller nation he surely would already have collected an international appearance. As it is he is currently waiting for a chance with Brazil before committing to France, he is of course Loic Flamilson.

No miracles were forth coming on Saturday, Jack Villeneuve played in a win for Gretna over St Mirren. Mike Billcliffe played in a draw for Kilmarnock and Mikael Schøler played in a 2-3 win over Rangers. Sunday was also void of any real action, Mark Webber played for Celtic in a 1-0 loss to Aberdeen. Marky Mark was back on the subs bench after recovering from his injury, Brendan Petersen had no real hope of winning the race anymore but even if he had his manager didn’t help his cause as he didn’t move from the bench in a 1-0 over Dundee Utd where Elliot Druce started and played only 29 minutes despite no injuries.

Driver of the Day - With a record of 2 goals a game for this race it was always going to be hard not to give it to Loic Flamilson however he’s going to share it with Brendan Petersen who but for Flamilson would have collected 10 points. The Australian showed his quality this month and will hope that his current run in the Hearts team continues for the remainder of the season.
