Season 2010-2011 - League Tables

Division One

div1season4.png

Leicestershire were unable to secure a third succesive title, and it was Gloucestershire, who had been in top spot for most of the season, who secured a place. Down the bottom, Kent are relegated, despite beating relegation rivals Derbyshire on the last day of the season. I'll explain why Derbyshire have a European spot later on.

Division Two

div2season4.png

The Isle of Wight are storming through the leagues, and are now in the top flight after wnning Division Two. Downm the bottom, it was a disastrous season for Glamorgan, while Essex will be hoping for success in the play-offs.

Division Three

div3season4.png

Herefordshire were clear winners of Division Three, while Staffordshire will be looking to get promotion back to Division Two at the first time of asking in the play-offs. Northumberland's stint in Division Three was short lived and will be in Division Four next season. Will Cheshire join them?

Division Four

div4season4.png

Isle of Man are the second island team to get promotion, but will the Isles of Scilly join them and make it three island teams out of Division Four. Judging by their past record in the play-offs, it seems unlikely, but you never know. Down the bottom, Cornwall are officially the worst county, but at least from here the only way is up.

Play-Offs

Division Two/Three - Staffordshire beat Dorset 4-2 in the first semi-final, the other semi-final confirming Essex's relegation after a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Northamptonshire. Staffordshire then went on to beat Northamptonshire 5-2 on aggregate to clinch promotion back to Division Two at the first time of asking.

Division Three/Four - Bedfordshire slaughtered Suffolk 5-2 on aggregate in the first semi-final, the other semi-final saw something remarkable happen, the Isles of Scilly actually winning a play-off match, 2-2 on aggregate, but winning on the away goals rule, to send Cheshire to Division Four. Normal order was restored in the final though, and the Isles of Scilly once again suffered play-off heartbreak, with a 5-3 defeat that means Bedfordshire are promoted to Division Three

Cups

FP Trophy - Hampshire booked their place in Europe thanks to beating Devon, who won this competition last year. It looked like the Division Two side would cause an upset, going 2-0 up within 20 minutes. But Hampshire hit back and scored two of their own, forcing the tie to extra time, and eventually penalties. Hampshire held their nerve to win 6-5.

League Cup - Lancashire and Buckinghamshire reached the final, and 4 goals were scored within the first 10 minutes, the scoreline at 2-2. The next goal, the winner, was scored in the 90th minute, and it was Lancashire who got it.

Challenge Cup - Essex took home the equivalent of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, a 2-1 victory against Cheshire, providing some consolation to what was otherwise a poor season for Essex. Essex were lucky to win in reality, Cheshire having many more shots on goal than Essex.

Season 2010-11 - Europe

Leicestershire - After getting to the group stages last season, high hopes were expected. Their first match, against Bohemians went well enough, 4-1 and 2-1 victories in each leg meant they were 2 matches away from the group stages. Unfortunately, they had to get past Inter Milan, and 3-1 and 4-0 defeats meant that they had to settle for the Europa League. That didn't go well either, they lost 2-0 in both legs to Atletico Madrid to send them crashing out of Europe.

Worcestershire - The first qualifying round match in the Europa League went well enough against Moldovan side Zimbru, 7-1 and 2-0 victories setting up a tie with Maccabi Netanya. They won the first leg at home 2-1, but they had to be weary of the away goal, and with a 1-0 defeat in Israel, they were out of the competition all together.

Lancashire - Lancashire also had to go through the qualifying rounds, the first against KR of Iceland (the KR stands for Knattspyrnufélag Rejkavikur, so we'll call them KR still), and won 3-0 in the first leg, drawing the second leg 2-2. Their next game saw them up against another Scandinavian side, FC Haka of Finland, and 3-0 wins in each leg set up an encounter with Man Utd in the 1st Round. Needless to say, the European run ended there, beaten 5-0 in each leg, and no surprises that the eventual winners of this competition were Man Utd.

Devon - Devon were also in the qualifying rounds, a 4-2 aggregate victory over Buducnost set up a tie in the 2nd qualifying round with Cercle Brugge. They lost the first leg in Belgium 1-0, and despite a 3-2 home victory over the Belgian outfit, exited the competition because of the away goals rule.

Surrey - Surrey were in the InterToto Cup, and their first opponents were Cliftonville, who they dispatched with 2-0 and 5-0 wins. Their next opponents were a little trickier, in the form of Werder Bremen, and despite a 2-1 home leg victory, were beaten 3-1 in Germany and so the European adventure ended there.

The clubs' poor performance in Europe means a European spot is lost, but will still have 3 representitives in the Europa League because Scotland were top of the Fair Play league. Derbyshire have therefore been awarded this place.

Next season's European clubs:

Champions League - Gloucestershire

Europa League - Leicestershire, Hampshire, Derbyshire

InterToto Cup - Durham
