Season 09-10 - Europe

Leicestershire - Leicestershire began their Champions League venture with a tricky draw against Maccabi Haifa. The first leg was at home, and they beat the Israelis 2-1. But with the away goal M.Haifa had, things were looking tricky. But Leicestershire were able to draw 2-2 in Israel, meaning they had qualified for the group stages, the first team in the County Championship to do so...

Group H included FC Porto, Bayern Munich and Shakhtar. The first match, against Shakhtar, was a 1-0 victory, meaning Leicestershire were briefly on top of their group. However, defeats to Porto (2-1) and Bayern (4-1) left them in a perilous position. Victory against Bayern at home was a must, and they stunned everyone with a 1-0 victory. The next match against Shakhtar, however, ended in a 2-1 defeat. At the moment, Leicestershire were on 6 points, Shakhtar were on 6 points, and Bayern were on 5 points. Unfortunately, Bayern beat Shakhtar and Leicestershire were thrashed 4-0 by Porto, meaning that they finished bottom of the group, and didn't even qualify for a Europa League spot.

Worcestershire - Worcestershire's first Champions League qualifying game was against Wisla Krakow, and they dispatched them 3-0 in Poland. The return leg ended 3-2 to the home side, comfortably through to the next round. That was against Porto, and this one was a step too far, a 4-0 aggregate defeat. They were still in the Europa League however, and were drawn against Schalke. They lost the first leg away 2-1, but with the away goal were in a good position, and when they took the lead in the first half of the return leg, the fans were dreaming. But the dream turned into a nightmare, as Schalke scored two second half goals to end the European dream.

Gloucestershire - Things weren't looking good when they lost their first leg match in the Europa League qualifying round match at home 1-0 to Gent, but they turned it round in Belgium, a 2-1 victory meant they were progressing to the next round. Their next match was against Spanish outfit Athletic, and the European run ended, 3-0 aggregate defeat

Staffordshire - Their European experience was a brief one - a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Partizan ensured that, and with their relegation, it's unlikely we'll see them in Europe for a long time.

Hampshire - The InterToto Cup saw them beat Drava 3-3 on aggregate, but won on the away goals rule, and then win 4-1 on aggregate against Kryljia Sovetotv. However, AEK Athens proved too much, as Hampshire lost 4-1 on aggregate.

Here are the teams in Europe next season

Champions League - Leicestershire

Europa League - Worcestershire, Lancashire, Devon

InterToto Cup - Surrey
