apologies i didnt see the link. that one looks ok but looks like the msi has basically the same build but is more expensive for less specs and scores less in the benchmark. reason im looking at the alienware is at the mo its 3200 for the 32 gig rig with the i9. although the mobile i9 is just an overclocked i7 latest model it still scores better than the latest i7 mobile chip

You won't get more gain from the i9 - it's a bit of a waste for FM.

For FM not important. For overall computer speed, yes recommended.

As it's a desktop you can change that at a later date anyway.

yeah i know for fm wise the alien ware is a bit overkill but i want to play the latest games on it as well and i bought star citizen ages ago and took part in the testing then they patched it and the xps 15 chuggs so i want to play that again and other latest games. while i have the money im gonna buy the best i can

Both roughly the same - the MSI slightly better on battery and slighly lighter.

But you get a laptop bag with the Asus.

So, I'm on the hunt for a new laptop.

I want something that's portable (university is an hour away on the London Underground), has a decent battery life (I also do some work that requires a bit of travelling around the South East, would be great to be usable on the train without charging worries), and if I'm using in a quiet area doesn't sound like it's about to blow up (I was looking at the Recoil II until I saw reviews about fan and the mechanical keyboard noises). I've had a look around PC Specialists, but most of the configuration stuff is just words to me really.

I have a pretty good PC Desktop which will be my main thing to run games on, however there is a good chance in a couple of years time I'll be doing a masters in Germany in which case I wouldn't want to lug a great stonking PC across Europe. I'm not looking for something that runs the latest biggest and baddest titles on Ultra + settings for everything, but I would like to be able to run FM, EU4, Civ6, Fortnite and maybe the occasional bigger title (a new Elder Scrolls or Fallout maybe). There will be quite a bit of use from excel, word, browsing, videos and basic statistical programmes also.

My budget is as cheap as possible (preferably three figures), but at the same time I could probably stretch £1,500. I want something value wise that does a job to meet the requirements, but at the same time if there's a must have that will last 10 years or there's nothing decent at lower costs then I'm happy to not eat for a week! I don't really have much computer knowledge regarding specs etc. (I found out yesterday that SSDs exist...), so I'm unsure even what sort of price range is reasonable for my requirements. 

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the input guys, I've got a few things there to consider there. 

My last laptop was a 17.3 incher which I didn't think was a terrible nuisance to transport in terms of width, the 4kg weight + the heaviest power cable I ever saw, which was needed as the battery life was realistically sub 1 hour, really made it a cumbersome chore though. I had a cheap rubbish notebook supplied by my last job which I had to carry across London (Buckhurst Hill - Ealing) a lot, was about 1kg and not even noticeable.

Not for £400 - maybe a desktop but then you'd need a monitor.

Hello @Smurf - Thanks for sharing all your knowledge here!   My old ASUS ROG 750JW (i7, GTX 765m) still works fine to play FM18.

But would you please share your thought on this new ASUS model, whether it's a good choice for the next 5 years of FM:

Hi fellow managers,

I'm looking at purchasing a new laptop and I will be playing FM19 on it. My budget is £600 to £700 fyi.

Processor speed is obviously very important.

I'm looking at one laptop which has a base processor speed of 2.8Ghz & a turbo speed of 3.8Ghz.

The other laptop has a base processor speed of 2.3Ghz & a turbo speed of 4.1Ghz.

How important is base processor speed? Should I just be searching for a laptop with the highest turbo speed or both high base & turbo speed?

Please help :)

The 2.8 base is better, taking Ram speed into account too,   Turbo speed will only happen when the Cpu is operating under its maximum recommendation of thermal limit which means the faster the Cpu works the hotter it gets. Turbo speed isn’t se in stone,  you’d be better off getting an i5 or i7 chip capable of being overclocked as with an overclocked chip you would have for example 3.8 or 4.1 operating on all cores 4 or 6 cores..  the K chips do cost more tho.

  • CPU: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core or AMD Athlon – 2.2 GHz +
  • VIDEO CARD: Intel GMA X4500, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT or AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 – 256MB VRAM.
  • 2Gb Ram

 

Dont get many intel chipped pc’s Cheaper than this. This pc has good reviews and only £550. It doesn’t come with OS.  Iv added couple bundle offers just for comparison.
