LLM - How do you pick your players?

Recommended Posts

When signing up new players in the Lower Leagues (Conference etc), what attributes do you believe to be most important?

I'm a sucker for Work Rate, Determination and Natural Fitness. Acceleration is good too.

The reason I ask, is I'm just about to start my 2nd season with Boreham Wood and I need to replace quite a few players.

Any feedback would be great!

Physical attributes for everyone as top priority, Pace, Strength, Jumping Reach.

The quality of the football isn't going to be great, win with aggression and strength and speed.

Blow every penny you have on the best finishing striker you can get. Not worth spending a penny on any other area of the pitch.

Somebody did an attribute chart last year for the best players in the Conference

I only found it the other day so haven't had a good look but here it is:

Generally in a player I look for Work Rate, Team Work, Strength, Determination & I like Height & Jumping Reach

Then as Nobby says, I add the attributes to the position & role I'm looking for

That's a great chart!

Basically it means that players with Pace 12 are already above average and can probably outrun other players. I sometimes struggle a bit with attributes at LLM, because EVERYTHING is so low that you get the impression it does not really matter if a player has 4 or 7 passing - he will certainly miss his pass anyway.

Hope that helps pal:thup:

It's easy to think like that but the way I see it is, if a player is rated 1 in an attribute, it means he's the lowest in the attribute in footballer terms if he's rated a 20, then he's the best in the World at that Attribute

ie A 1 in Pace doesn't literally mean he can't run it means he's slow for a footballer, 20 would mean he's the fastest

My 4 for finishing striker has bagged 18 goals in 23 games for example :)

Well that's technically is true when you get players who have astronomical attributes.

As an example on an older FM;

I signed Joe McPhee (or something like that) a Scottish free agent. He was rather crap in everything but he did have a reasonable passing attribute so he was exceptional for his level and could often do hollywood balls that most players would baulk at, yet Premier League players would do for a laugh!

The killer for him? He had 20 for freekicks and I think 18-19 for corners etc. You would not believe how many goals we scored because of his freekick taking and his dead ball delivery, more so when you factor in the amount of fouls you can draw in the lower leagues. There were several occassions where he would pop up in the last minute with a whipped curled free kick into the top corner. Guy was a Lower league David Beckham, ridiculous.

I ended up using him all the way through to League 1 (successive promotions) despite the fact he was 'crap', because all through those leagues a dead ball specialist was worth an extra 10 points a season in my view.

Don't forget about personality either, the most important thing for development and can perform better depending on the personality, or be easier to manage.

I like sporting (the best player I ever produced was sporting) and any of the professional personalities.

In LLM I think the development is so slow as to not be worth it at all really. Better off wheeler-dealing until the team is in a league where the facilities can cause the abilities to raise quickly.

Like most I look for things like Bravery, Determination, Team Work, Work Rate, Natural Fitness and Stamina. However there are other factors that I consider to be important whilst looking for players. For example I recently joined Wrexham and all my strikers were either awful or didn't fit what i wanted them to do so I signed Striker A who is a real team player and I would have no qualms if he never scored because of the job he does and striker B has plenty of pace for the level but also has good finishing and composure.

It's not always just about the attributes though either. Sometimes it can be beneficial to just look for that player who is going to be a pain in the arse for players at that level. For example on FM14 I signed Enoch Showumni for a couple of seasons at non league level. With him being over 200cm tall and having good pace for such a tall player he was every defenders nightmare.
