The Eyetest
A much better second season in charge, as we fell short of promotion by a gnat's chuff. 12 1-0 wins spoke to the quality of our game management and Dillon Hoogwerf's 26 goals fired us to 3rd place in 3.Liga. We fell short of automatic promotion by 3 points, so we made it into the 2.Bundesliga Relegation Playoffs against FSV Zwickau in a classic East German clash. A 2-0 lead evaporated into a 3-2 defeat in the first leg, then a late penalty save and Hoogwerf goal saw us win away in Zwickau, 2-1, but fall short on away goals 4-4. To be honest, I'm kinda happy as we didn't have the squad to go up, however the extra money would have been very very welcome to the club. So we're back to 3.Liga with a lot less players as we can't afford to keep them on.

You're all used to my threads now, they have the same basic meat on the bone, but I wanted to do something a little different this time, I wanted to focus on some partnerships between academy players in the first team. Obviously this will require two academy players playing in the first team, so these will be few and far between.

First up, German Kulikov and Edison Murati.

The Players

Kulikov is our Segundo Volante and seems well suited for it. Not only is his Work Rate and Pace above DNA levels (10 & 8 respectively), but his Anticipation, Stamina, Positioning and First Touch are very high for the position as well. He's not quite suited for the more goal scoring aspects of the role, as his Finishing is 4 and Long Shots 5, but I don't need him to pop up with goals. Last season he was averaging 1.5 tackles per game, with a Pass Completion % of 93%, however, in 8 league games so far this season, he has averages 0.98 tackles per game, with a Pass Completion % of 90%, which is a drop off, but it's still early in the season, so it's just there as a guide.

386d41b4af5fed5439c59946bbe191c3.png

Murati is our Half Back and, being a defender by trade, was better suited for this role, rather than SV. His Work Rate and Pace are well above DNA levels (10 & 8 respectively and his Teamwork, Bravery, Concentration and Positioning are very high for the position as well. His Marking, Composure and Aggression isn't the best however, but there are a framework to work on. Last season, in 16 games, he averaged 1.86 tackles per game, with an Average Rating of 7.05, however, in 8 league games so far this season, he has averages 0.88 tackles per game, with an Average rating of 7.28, which is a steep drop off on his tackles a game, but a sharp upswing in the average rating suggesting, he's being able to do more in the game than defend, which is nice.

The Stats

stat.png.aab6c0d184a16b2954409b2fcf663d8d.png

These are the areas in which they are ranked in the Top 20 of 3.Liga. These placings bear out their roles if I'm honest, with Kulikov more all-action and Murati more 'right time, right place', but it does prove that they fit very well into my system

stat2.thumb.png.83a57125773cf8e9dbe23d2f750f023b.png

With Kulikov and Murati marked out, you can see that their Tackling is nowhere near last season in the first 8 games, as well as the possession drop off, but the Passing is still excellent, with Murati's distribution a key factor.

The Brief

We were given the board brief to Finish Mid-Table this season after last season's heroics, with yet another decrease in the wage budget at £26k and no transfer budget again. Losing just £6k off the wage budget from last season wasn't the worst as we had done the hardest cuts last season. We also again needed to sort the futures out of two players, German Kulikov and Edison Murati.

The Results

3bdd84be541dc92ba1aaae548cddfe68.png

As last year, Dillon Hoogewerf is leading the line with 6 in 8 so far this season.

The Transfers

We also re-signed Edison Murati to a 3 year deal and failed with a Kulikov contract, but we can try again later.

The Eye Test

We're not quite at last season's powers, with us sitting in 6th place, ten points off the top spot, but we're keeping touch with the top teams. Dillon Hoogewerf again leading the scoring charts with 11 so far, but his contract is up at the end of the season and recent talks showed he wanted too much from us for two long. So far he's scored 39 goals in 90 games for the club, which isn't chicken feed, but I cannot sanction £2.5k p/w on a player when we are having our wage budget cut year after year. We're still defensively playing well, but we aren't scoring well.

Well, sadly this intake does not solve our left back problems, but we gain some backup in places and depth is always a good thing if you are running a youth only save. Let's look at our top 3 candidates

11d07601e721e3d2c8736146e5f6d047.jpg

  • AMRLC/ST  Francisco Jose Silveira - Work Rate: 10, Pace 12 - DNA: Passed

FJS is going to be trained in the Advanced Forward role. His Technique, Finishing and Flair should mean he can do a job, but he needs to grow into his Anticipation and Off the Ball going forward

483fbd350bf8d2cd66811ed3f3cbbe64.jpg

  • M/AMC/ST  Leon Gottschalt-Guttau - Work Rate: 12, Pace 10 - DNA: Passed

LGG is the big-ticket player in this intake, but I'm gonna hot-house him in the Under 19's as much as possible, to give him development time. We have time to let him improve which is nice.

98b2afcf0c7df94f703e1dddd92ce70e.jpg

  • ML Timo Stöfer - Work Rate: 13, Pace 10 - DNA: Passed

Timo isn't as talented as some of the others in this intake, but he is at least, the next one to pass the club DNA threshold. He'll have time to develop in the ML role.

This is next season's lineup without moves. Let's look through to see when/where there are issues.

GK - No issues for me. Lord is an amazing keeper, but Guerra and Tepe could easily slot in to replace him. Tepe is slightly ahead on talent, so he will be loaned out this season for game time.
DR - No worries here. Connor Struck was whining about a new contract, so I'm happy to let him go any time and have Roth as the backup
DCR - Nailed, Mooy isn't going anywhere, unless it's for £1m, so he's here. Fischer was last season's DL backup, but found a home in the middle.
DCL - Again, nailed. Ballack could improve to overtake Lanfer, but it wont be this season.
DL - This is our biggest glaring issue. A 30 year old as our first choice and a 26 year old backup, when he's mainly a CB. We don't have any players who are coming through to play there either. I'm hoping the next season's intake will help!
DMCR - Nailed on. Murati signed a new deal this season and he'll be there. Alhassan was a decent backup, but Mohr is coming up behind him like the Undertaker meme. Hopefully he'll take a loan this season..
DMCL - Once again, nailed on. Kulikov also signed a new deal, so he'll be the main guy with Juckel as a backup. Slightly worrying there is no U-19 player coming through to the standards, but we have time
ML - The most volatile position in the squad. Wolf started as last season's starter, but Michalski came in halfway through and played well enough to take the starting spot. Jarosch is the heir-apparent to the slot, but we'll loan him out this season.
AMR - This is our weakest area. We've spent the last 18 months with a loan player in the slot and, to be honest, I'll look at it again on Deadline Day if either of those two aren't performing
AMC - This is the jewel of our crown. Ekangamene has come through our academy and become the star of the team. He's agreed a new contract for the end of the season, so we're safe, but there's a big drop-off to the reserve. Talent in the reserves though!
ST - Losing a near-50 goal scorer is going to hurt anyone, but we have two academy players coming in at starter and reserve. Abbas scored four last season after his introduction, although worryingly, only one was from open play. Fernando usurps Hoffmann for the backup slot and I'll let him (Hoffmann) go at the end of his contract

The Eyetest
We somewhat reverted to the mean this season following last season's overachievement. We never really seemed to get out of second gear and this landed us a 7th place finish in 3.Liga. Dillon Hoogwerf once again led the way with 16 goals, but a worrying drought between Dec and Mar, and with his contract up at the end of the season meant that we would have to let him go. A faithful servant in the three seasons he was here, he notched 46 goals for the club, nearly trebling his output up to that point!. We ended 4th on Goals Conceded this season, which is excellent and 9th on Goals Scored which was honestly a shock to me as we didn't seem to have that many high scoring games! This season also saw another board takeover as we're constantly drowning in debt.

The Brief

We were, once again, given the board brief to Finish Mid-Table this season after last season's efforts, with an increase in the wage budget to £31k and an £18k transfer budget again. We were in a much better place with regards to contracts and squad depth, but we lost some players unexpectedly to sales and injuries and a huge lack of loan availablity, so we were forced to sign two players on free transfers. We'll sell them in the next season or two as cover will develop.

Well. This has bitten us in the arse. We're now £5k over budget and with very little room to shed salary. Depending on how the board look at it, we may need to lose both Murati and Kulikov. We're being bent over by £400k p/m loan repayments from successive takeovers

The Eye Test

It's been a peaks and troughs kinda season for us. Started well, had a major dip and then came back firing up to the winter break, with our last two games finishing 4-0 and 5-1 to us. A 9 game winning streak saw us keep pace with the race for promotion as we have five eligible teams within 6 points of 2nd place at the halfway stage. Erkan Akbaş has top scored this season with 13, however an 11-game goalless streak, right in our bad patch, leaves question marks over his reliability. This run-in will test us with so many teams close

The Transfers

The Kallnik bid came from nowhere. There was a million pound plus bid, which I turned down, but wouldn't have been able to keep him due to our financial state. Luckily, Hoffenheim came in with a decent bid, which would include a 50% sell on and a loanback for the season so it would leave time for Timon Roth to develop. We also got Hoffmann's £1k p/w salary off the books

This is next season's lineup without moves. Let's look through to see when/where there are issues.

GK - There is going to be an almighty log-jam at goalkeeper this season. Lord is the undisputed #1, but Guerra and Tepe are almost neck and neck. It might have to be another loan for Guerra until something happens with Lord
DR - Kallnik's sale has really accelerated my timetable for the right back slot. We have 4 players in the U-19's who are right backs, but two are retraining to leftbacks so Ginter is the heir-elect to the slot
DCR - Same as last season.
DCL - Same as last season
DL -  Only difference to last season is that we have Tunisian youngster Zied Sassi in the youth slot
DMCR - Murati was subject to many bids in January, but none matched up to what he's worth Alhassan was a decent backup, but Mohr will succeed him next season easily and could make Murati move into defence..
DMCL - This wont change any time soon.
ML - Next season, we'll give Jarosch his head, along with fellow youth team member Binde as his backup. Wolf is purely for depth as we're not re-signing Michalski and Bayrak is only a loanee
AMR - Henning Mertens takes over the starting role next season with Brageson as backup. *IF* we can get striker improvements, I'll move Akbas out to the wing, thusly why he's there as third choice
AMC - Ekangamene is the incumbent and wont be moving any time soon. Amering will be the backup next season and, although Gottschalt-Guttau is more talented, he needs another season at youth level.
ST - Akbas is entirely the #1 striker, with Fernando is backup. and Kopnick is the de-facto third choice

  • GK  Daniel Gosslar - Determination: 14, Command of Area: 11 - DNA: Passed

Sigh. Another goalie off the production line. But his rushing out tendancy means we could have an issue in matches

 124617014c7007a3d2c85598a25ac36e.png

  • AMRL/ST  Andreas Köpnick - Work Rate: 14, Pace 13 - DNA: PASSED

He really, really needs a season or two in the U-19's playing regularly to develop, but he is a good prospect

c68ccf5cb23ae011fc8ce1949f829b64.png

  • MLC/ST  Benjamin Schmidt - Work Rate: 10, Pace 9 - DNA: PASSED

Schmidt looks like a decent prospect, but he'll never make striker for our first team. His octagon suggests he'll be an excellent Segundo Volante however

More of the same this season. We went on a number of runs this season, both bad and good and this landed us an 8th place finish in 3.Liga. Erkan Akbaş led the way with 18 goals, in his first season as first choice striker, but we got very little from the rest of the team. Stat-wise We ended 4th on Goals Conceded this season and 9th on Goals Scored again which is more spooky as we appear to have manifested almost exactly the same season as last year. We made some money from a big sale, but we've lost £4m this season because of loan repayments. It's the one thing that is killing us.

The only other thing was the complete lack of anything of interest outside of football this season. No awards, no news. Next season, here we come

Something I missed last season was two first goals for the club, both were absolute bangers.

Our Icelandic import scores his first goal, with a peach of a finish. Reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp's goal against Southampton early on in his Arsenal career.

An academy graduate's first start for the club in the last game of the season, saw him pop up with an (pre-brain worms) Le Tissier-esque finish to open his senior account

The Transfers

Well.. This was the worst window I've had since I have been here. Every player was taken around his MRC value and, as we were penniless, we couldn't stand up against these offers. Worst loss was Akbas just after the first game of the season. One incoming player was the return home of a previous academy graduate. I got a notification that I had missed out on a 50% sell-on clause as Connor Struck had been released by Cheminitzer FC and we moved quickly to snap him up on a free at the same wages he was at when he left lol.

Struck is our Full Back (Support) on the right. He left the club as an academy graduate, but we ended up resigning him as he was left go by his last club. He is well suited for his role, as not only is his Work Rate and Pace above DNA levels (10 & 12 respectively), but his Aggression, Stamina, Positioning and Decisions are very high for the position as well. He's not the best in the defensive aspects of the role, as his Tackling is 8 and Marking 7, but he has enough going forward that can mitigate it. This season he is averaging 1.03 tackles per game, with a Pass Completion % of 93%  and a 2.44 dribbles per 90mins stat. He's proving vital for our game plan of bringing the ball out of defence, but with only 2 assists this season, it proves that we're not looking for service from wide areas.

9f39ef4a29e93f34a4d1a8677ce05cdd.png

Mertens is our Attacking Playmaker (Support) in the right wing position. This season, he's made the position his own and is a decent 3.Liga standard player. His Pace and Work Rate are well above DNA levels, along with his Stamina, Acceleration, Passing and Agility being good for the level we play at. His Crossing and Passing are middle-of-the-road (10 & 11 respectively), but again, the level we play at, this will not affect his performances as much as it would going higher. This season, he has scored 2 goals and assisted 4 times in 19 games, averaging a rating of 7.18. A good start, but the most surprising thing is that he's making more tackles than the full back per game, making 2.35 tackles per game. He is making less dribbles than the full back, at 1.29 per 90, but this is entirely within keeping of his role as an AP.

The Stats

The Eye Test

We've suffered this season with the losses of players early on and injuries, but we are still in the running for promotion and that does bode well for us. The longest we've gone without a win is 4 games, but picked up 3 points during that run, so again, not the worst. We're a place better than last year too. Highlight of the season so far was going 0-3 down in THIRTEEN MINUTES to Erzgebirge Aue and clawing back to draw 4-4 in the 91st minute! Our top scorer is Sri Lanka's finest, Hewa Battage Fernando with 11 goals, but his backup Henning Köpnick has also been amongst the goals, scoring 6

Another bid that came from nowhere. Coenen was the backup this season on the right, but £1m + 50% sell on is too good to turn down for a backup, so off he went. We brought in England's Andrew Powell on loan from Derry City in Ireland to help out

This is next season's lineup without moves. Let's look through to see when/where there are issues.

GK - The logjam continues. Lord moved on in pre-season, but Tepe and Guerra are almost neck and neck in talent. Guerra is getting a ton of interest, but he'll stay with Ladic going out on loan if possible
DR - Struck stays as first choice, but this could be his last season as Ginter and Susak are coming up fast on the rails to replace him
DCR - Mooy, the club legend he is, will stay. Ballack will continue to develop behind him.
DCL - Nothing changes here either. There is a clear first choice and backups. We really need some players to come through
DL - Our Achillies heel, is once again, our achillies heel. We really need some better prospects on the left. Sassi is first choice, but we have nothing good behind him
DMCR - Mohr is probably the best player in the league right now,, but his backups are....nowhere near as good
DMCL - We're running a pretty settled squad here and the Kulikov / Juckel team up is working perfectly. Svavarsson is a deep third in the pecking order.
ML - Jarosch has claimed the left midfield spot and will be there until he's sold. Binde is an excellent backup and Stofer is the U19 heir
AMR - Mertens is the first choice, but Maier is getting better and better and hopefully he'll supplant Mertens soon enough. Silveira is a youth hybrid AMR/Striker so will hang around
AMC - Amering is first choice, but will be supplanted by Gottschalt-Guttau soon enough, it's just a year too early for the young fella. Bolat is a space-filler of the third choice
ST - Fernando is likely to be first choice for a season or two, but third choice Andreas Kopnick is coming up fast and namesake Henning could move to AMR in order to make way for a talented youth

Promotion is on the horizon! Now a good run of results and you´ll do it :)

....And sorry to be the party crasher, but in the small Images "Eigenschaften" is misspelled ("Eigenshaften" with "sh" instead of "sch")... don´t stone me for being a grammar nazi please!!!

Ooh, thanks! I'll change that, going forward!

We finally (kinda) have a left back! He'll need to be trained there, but it does solve one issue, along with getting a DC through. Let's look at the Top 3 prospects

9e78344a27abcac9a0f6728c7f3b5de3.png

  • DRC  Sa'ar Turgeman - Work Rate: 13, Pace 12 - DNA: Passed

Finally a player that we can put as a left back. Not much in the way of Physicals, but his Mentals give him a fighting chance.

  • D/DM/M/AMC  Andreas Flauder - Work Rate: 10, Pace 10 - DNA: Passed

Another with not fantastic physicals, but he has an intriguing skillset which could translate to either DM role for us

  • M/AMC/ST  Manuel Ertel - Work Rate: 10, Pace 12 - DNA: Passed

It's an interesting dilemma here as we could run Ertel as either an AMC or DM (which would require more training). I think he'll ended up in the AMC role, myself.

I take it Turgeman is a righty who you will be playing on the left just because you desperately need someone? Or is he a lefty right back by trade? (Looks good by the way and that intake looks excellent on the whole).

I like the partnerships idea by the way.
