Libertas San Marino! - The FM23 San Marino Challenge

After the disappointment that was the European Qualifiers last year, I was ecstatic with this years Euro International Div C showing:

I believe we've found the answer to Nanni's retirement, with 21 yo Michele Ciacci (La Fiorita) finding the net 5 times in the campaign.

image.thumb.png.ed5798be6815fb03ccee167671ed6c27.png

We now have two players (newgens) on 70+ caps, with 28 year old M/AM(C) Allessandro Michelotti (Tre Firoi) on 78 caps (and as my best MC likely to hit that 100 mark, unless someone shows up with some real talent (he has 7 goals and 10 assists in the 78 caps, but has been slowing down in recent years).  The other is my very own Victor San Marino DL Mattia Santii, one of the stars of the club team and a key player in the national team.  Currently 27 years old and on 75 caps, barring injury he will certainly make the 100 cap mark.

All in all, excited about the successful campaign, and looking forward to what this group of players will do next year in the WC qualifiers.

Edit:  This year's campaign moved us to our highest ever world ranking of 166.

Not sure I've ever had anyone this....consistent.  1st match in 11 without scoring, 1st in 16 w/o a goal or an assist (although 1st four were friendlies).

3-2 loss to Parthenope (Napoli) also our first loss in 9 matches in this 3rd Serie A season --- sitting pretty in 5th place atm, with some decent results against the top 6 teams in the league as well.

Also, versus Estonia, Nanni got a hattrick, so that's very cool!

@jerzy Can you see your youth rating in the editor?

Through Genie Scout yes. It's 36. And reputation is 6500.

Youth Rating is important but it's clearly not everything. If you were to set Brazil's youth rating to 1 and Bhutan's youth rating to 200, Brazil would still produce the better players. Reputation clearly has something to do with it at country level. I'm not entirely sure what comes into play at club level, but as I said, I have a suspicion that performances in European competitions have a strong effect.

The season is probably going fairly well when you get a news article like this:

image.thumb.png.9dc63d6a126728a41c545fea1277d7d4.png

(One match short of half-way through season, we're setting 3rd w/ 36 points --- mainly because of this player --- who is sitting atop the league scoring table by about 8 goals already)!

Third season's the charm in Serie A.  We will be playing in Europe in the 2037/38 season, after finishing 6th in Serie A.

image.thumb.png.b1d2701be2804b1ceacfe695c405f845.png

We actually were flirting with the title for a while, sitting as high as 3rd for 7 weeks with only a point or two separating the top 3 (20 weeks as a top-4 team).  But, our form fell off a bit when our #2 striker got bought out on his MRC of 1.4M€.  I tried to re-contract him, but he wanted to change from about 9K/wk to over 30K/wk, and I just couldn't justify it...so off he went (as did his 8 goals/6 assists on the season (21g/9a over 2.5 seasons).  His spot was immediately filled by a new signing, but Filannino's striker partership was broken, and his 2nd half goals fell off a bit.  Instead of the 50+ goal season he had been on pace for, he had to settle for a new Serie A record of 40 goals on the season.

image.thumb.png.686fdffae6c3e005a9c4c767473dbdfb.png

So, we're now going to Europe.  We've picked up a couple of decent youngsters (unfortunately, of the two "elite" talents that came in the youth intake, only one was Sammarinese, and of the 7 signed only 2 were Sammarinese, but they both have a chance of featuring in the national team.  We'll see how they work out.

I think this is a first for me ever in nearly 30 years playing CM/FM!

Anyone else have this issue or manage to improve it? 5 years in with Victor San Marino and this intake I didn't have a single Sanmmarinese player 😕

Finally seeing some positive progress with the national team.  Our best major competition outing so far -- this time in the '38 World cup qualifiers.  Best match was the final, where it looked possible to create an upset against 82nd (ish) ranked Iceland.

image.png.939ee379b754dc1be651333af7f534c5.png

Only 2 wins, but for the most part we kept the scorelines reasonable in the losses, and really pushed some teams in a moderately difficult group.

Casadei is emerging as a goalscorer to replace Nanni -- 4 goals tallied in the competition taking him to 9 international goals.  Ciacci (2 goals) and Canini (2 goals) are youngsters who are starting to turn heads as well.

image.thumb.png.3967fcbcd77de8c142bb515ff12f6c1e.png

Table looks similar to the last qualifying season for the world cup --- 6 points in that campaign as well.  The difference is we went from a GD of -21 to a GD of -10, and the prior WC Quals were against an easier slate of teams as well.

So, overall, I take this as positive progress, and look forward to the Euro Quals in a couple of years.

So I thought I'd provide a little update on my career so far as I enter the summer of 2040. I'll start off with the national team.

San Marino national team and league

So this has gone generally okay. Nothing mindblowing in terms of qualification but we're sat solidly as a Nations League Division C team, and sat in 138th in the FIFA rankings, 1 below our all-time high. Unfortunately youth player generation has been a bit slower than I'd hoped, but it's still really good progress 17 years into the game.

image.thumb.png.21cb6ebf686973b8d104c98d5c8a8504.png

As for the league itself, we've moved up to being the 26th most reputable league in the world, above the second tiers of Spain and France, but still below Serie B, Championship and 2. Bundesliga. Hitting the 3* reputation bracket there will hopefully help a little bit.

Screenshot2023-07-03at10_38_49.thumb.png.021d72b8ed17d08a9ee66ce87d6874c1.png

And as for the teams in the league, we as a team only just broke into the 3* reputation rating bracket. Which is odd considering we were basically level with La Fiorita for quite some time, who as far as I can tell have never successfully made it through a single round in Europe, though admittedly their entry point has improved as our coefficient rating has.

image.thumb.png.4ab09957ed103352993014d771675e2e.png

Tre Penne

So this is where it gets interesting. Naturally we have dominated the league nigh on year-on-year, mostly winning with 100% win records. That said, we lost in the final of the most recent Coppa Titano and Super Coppa Sammarinese, so maybe it shows the rest of the league is improving.

From a facilities point of view, I'm finally in the process of obtaining a 3* youth facility, still not great but it's getting there. Everything else is maxxed out, and we have a new-ish 12.5k capacity stadium with 9k seats.

Tre Penne in Europe

But what's really interesting is our performance in Europe. We have consistently made it to the group stages of the CL with relatively little trouble, but after a couple of years of then failing to make it to the next round, our coefficient dropped a fair bit. Up until this point, that had been our best performance in Europe.

Then out of nowhere, this season has been a complete freak one. Against all the odds we made it to the CL semi-final, losing the first leg 2-1 to Inter and having to travel away. Then, what I can only describe as a freak result that I've never seen before, we won 4-0 and made it to the actual final of the Champions League.

By pure coincidence, that final happened to be my 1,000th game in management in this save, where we ultimately lost to Liverpool, but it has really, really helped our European ratings, which in turn will help improve the league.

Screenshot2023-07-03at10_41_23.thumb.png.8e0fd833331ff6e14db22b768e8baba2.png

So we now find ourselves in 20th place, which I anticipate improving in the next few years as long as I can consistently make it out of the group stage of the CL, which I think/hope is achievable now.

Looking at the numbers there, I'd like to think we can break into the top 15, which would give us 5 places in Europe, and distribute a bit more money around the league:

image.thumb.png.3202e49289c178fa44afd54aa732834f.png

And then final screenshot, just Tre Penne sitting in 22nd, above PSG and just behind Man Utd in the European club coefficients :D.

Screenshot2023-07-03at10_40_30.thumb.png.b6478cb89faea8b8d9c497c42e387025.png

I must admit, this is a bit of an unusual save, not playing too many games, instant resulting a lot and just really trying to optimise the finances we've got and doing the best at a club with a relatively poor reputation. But it's quite fun and the novelty hasn't worn off yet, really intrigued to see how far the Sammarinese league can really go, and hopefully in turn, the national team.

It can come very far if you play long enough ;)

This was my old save in FM 22. I started a new one with Folgore Falciano (also in FM 22). In 2042 I'm 17th now on the coefficients. Also reached the semi final of the CL two years in a row now and the season before that lost the EL final

I'm curious about trying this but with 2 managers loaded (if I can muster the energy to drive through the game like this for this many years)!

One in charge of Victor San Marino and another from the Campionato Sammarinese, then whichever as the national league manager as well.

I guess the theory being you're able to double your efforts at the same time. Would be intrigued to see how it might speed up the process.

Really interesting to see how everyone is faring in this challenge!

I have left Victor to go back to the San Marinese league. The regens Victor has produced since I have left are incredible. Way better than those produced when I was there. It was the same at the beginning after I left Cosmos.

The national team is in good shape and the future looks promising. Qualifying for the European Championship is pretty much a given now and I have won my Division A Nation's League group 3 times in a row. The team isn't strong enough to win the competition though and I finish 3rd or 4th.

Bit annoyed that the National Team still plays in the San Marino Stadium. Victor now has a 35000 seat stadium and it would be nice to play there.

To be fair, that was my 2038 youth intake...I've had a few seasons to get things going, to include my youth facilities/recruitment.  Though I'm being stymied by my board at the moment....they have refused for 3 seasons to increase youth recruitment, preferring me to use the transfer market (which is now stuck at above average).  Academy coaching is rated "good", but also not being allowed to increase by board.  Youth facilities stuck at average.... only my training facilities are being increased (now at Excellent).

The 2037/38 season is in the books.  It featured our first year in Europe, and it took quite some time to adjust to the new schedule (8 Europa League matches added to the early schedule gave us quite a poor start....but once we adjusted we went on and did well.  We lost two tough matches of our first 4 Europa matches, then ran the table to finish qualifying for the knockout stages.

image.png.d8863d6f776bdc1b2adfb50484754d33.png

The knockout stages featured a tough slate of teams, and every match was closely fought.  Our journey came to an end in the Semi-finals, where we took Olympique Marseilles to penalties --- and it took 6 kicks apiece after both teams' keeper saved 2 apiece in the starting 5 spot-kicks.  A win would have seen us face Newcastle in the finals for a chance at the ECL next season, but we came up one kick short.

In the league, with all the extra european spots, we start slow, but my mid-season had gotten things turned around again.

image.thumb.png.df03bddf4c66d9c8d2c90d1bb434a962.png

We had chances to make it to the top-4 (and ECL for next season), but once again, fell just short.  The final match saw us knock off 4th place Fiorentina, but we needed help from 20th Brianza (playing against 5th place Udinese), and while they fought valiantly, equalizing the match in the 55th minute after Udinese took a 1-0 lead on a 7th minute PK, they were unable to keep Udinese from scoring a 2nd and 3rd goal to claim the 4th place spot.

In the end we finished 5th with 69 points (1 spot and 3 points higher than the prior season).

image.thumb.png.cd1b7b4d5202646a56c9dad793953118.png

Last season's record setter (40 league goals last season) Antonio Filannino finished 4th with 23 league goals (12 more in Europe gave him 35 on the season).

My signing of the season was Polish left-winger / set-piece specialist Piotr Zajac,

Looking forward to more European football next season!

The quest to continue to improve the national team is really going well.  Albania ranked 72 coming into this match, so this stands as one of our best outings ever.  We've guaranteed safety in European Division C for another season.  Canini hit his 8th career national team goal in his 23rd cap.  Coming into this match ranked 159th, I suspect by end of the next match (assuming a win) we might jump as high as 155th.....if this is the case a couple milestones might fall in the 2039 calendar year --- achieving 150 or better, and having newgen(s) with 100 caps.

image.thumb.png.23b0a129b3b3fb70834a98620ed8fe72.png

Edit: Results are in, we've moved up to 156 in world rankings after 1-1 draw w/ Belarus.  Hoped for a win vs 128th(ish) ranked team, but just couldn't pull it off.

We have done it. 8 years after losing in the Finale, San Marino is European Champion. It was the last major competition for the players of the first great generation and they retired with a bang. I didn't think I'd be able to go that far with a team that's in between generations. The group stage was what I expected, tough games against teams that I used to beat. I can't really explain how the team transformed into machines once we reached the playoff stage.

And to top off an amazing season

Ok now at a stagnation point I think. I've won the CL twice in a row with Tre Penne, still only in a 12k-ish capacity stadium, my board are very frustrating, but not really making any progress in terms of league rep or coefficient. Pretty much stuck in 12th place in the UEFA coefficients and 15th in terms of league reputation, I think it's the teams behind me holding me back.

So new plan, once I achieve 5* facilities everywhere with Tre Penne (hopefully in the next season), I'll take over another team in the league and try to drag them up too. Could be interesting.

Another successful club season for Victor San Marino:

We qualified for the ECL for the first time in team history.  We also did well in the Italian Cup, making it to the Quarter Final where we got knocked out by Juventus 3-2; also made the quarterfinal in the Europa League, getting knocked out in a shootout to fellow Italian team Fiorentina, who went on to lose to Leicester 2-1 in the semi-final.

Filannino took top league goalscorer accolades (and player of the year as well) scoring 33 league goals, and finished with a team record 46 goals in total.  His goal tally netted him the European Golden Shoe award as well with a score of 66.00 (2nd place had a score of 58.00).  His 3-season tally since joining the team now stands at 120 goals.  And, despite all this, there is no interest at all from other teams despite a modest €5.8-7.1M transfer value, and equally modest €31k/wk salary  (not that I'm particularly interested in selling him, but I'm surprised no one is even remotely interested in acquiring him.

image.thumb.png.817e2c0442c4f356eb53a10db6b754e5.png

The team has now risen to 62in in European club rankings, and finally have moved above all Serie B teams, rising to 10th overall in Italy.

Facilities are looking good finally, with training facilities rated Superb, youth facilities rated great, and both Junior coaching and youth recruitment rated at good (and improving this year).  It took some convincing to get the board to move on the youth side, but after several discussions they have decided to appease me.  We're getting some decent youth out, with 3 elite talents (2 Sammarinese) and 3 top talents (all 3 sammarinese) in this year's crop.  I think I am going to get a couple of them involved in and around the first team this year and try to push their development a bit, as they look to be useful fairly soon.

Finally, the stadium is getting a nearly 4500 seat upgrade, putting us at nearly 20k when completed.  Should help us get a bit more income to channel into wages to bring in some better players.  We'll be needing them if we're going to challenge in the ECL, and hopefully develop more Sammarinese talent.

One of our biggest results to date:  a 0-0 draw vs a top-100 team (Luxembourg came into the match 98th).  Mattia Santi is the first newgen to reach 100 caps for the San Marino National Team.  The draw might also be enough to move us up to 150th, reaching a 2nd milestone this match!  (edit:  a friendly 2-1 win vs Kazakhstan and 0-0 draw vs Luxembourg only moved us up one spot, from 152 to 151).  Sad day.!

Decent results in the Euro Qualifiers this season.  Felt like we did better than actual results showed; however, keeping respectable scores in all matches is a huge improvement too.

Looking forward to the next major tournament as I think we have a chance to really improve with 2 more years of development in some of the youngsters.

Today, a national holiday has been declared.  For the first time in the nation's history, a top-100 ranked team was beaten.  Beaten soundly!

image.thumb.jpeg.8a8ff7a8447dca9f3ab6a06cbaa3ad1d.jpeg

21yo Tamagnini, who plays for Cittanova, was absolutely clinical in front of goal.  If we were in a tournament, his 2nd would certainly be in the running for goal of the tournament.  The keeper made a long clearance out to the right --- right to Tamagnini, who, about 40 yards out, had the choice to control the ball, or, as he decided, to leap into the air and volley the ball back --- a 40 yard perfectly placed volley into the back of the empty net, with no player close to being able to intervene.  It wasn't a bad clearance by the keeper, as he was under pressure, he got good distance and directed the ball wide to the right.....but Tamagnini happened to be in the right place at the right time.  he timed his leap perfectly, hitting the ball some 24-30" off the ground and beautifully placed the shot back.  With the keeper near the edge of the box, he could only watch helplessly as the ball sailed well out of reach into the net.

The win against 78th placed Northern Ireland should finally take us off that 151st spot in the world rankings into the top 150!

edit:  Sadly, a 3-0 win vs 78th Northern Ireland and 0-1 loss to 145th ranked Lithuania in the summer friendlies were not enough to move us even one spot.  Still stuck at 151.

Just started unemployed with my Sammarinese DB and the Fusion file down to Eccellenza loaded, at the start of Italian clubs' participation in the Champions League. This should mean that my selecting the "no transfer activity in first window" option leads to a realistic situation at the beginning of September.

Just before taking the Pennarossa job - the only one available in all of San Marino, which I applied to and successfully interviewed for - I was offered the chance to make any changes to the month-to-month backroom staff. Naturally, I set about sacking a useless fitness coach, although it occurred to me I may have been keeping his brother on:

However, the game doesn't seem to recognize them as brothers, so no inherent advantage - and off to the Sammarinese unemployment office he goes. I upgraded the existing coach's deal (no one's brother, as far as I know) to assistant manager, knowing how difficult it would be to start at a new club without one.

Watch this space, will try to bring Pennarossa to glory and spread any newfound wealth into the league below. By the time I started at Pennarossa, they were 3 games into the season. Thankfully, they took 4 points out of it with positive goal differential, and the goal of a top 7 spot with the playoffs attached seems in reach:

Here we go. Started with Juvenes-Dogana, signed a full new team and dominated the first season by doing the domestic double!

We also got our first international win against fellow giants Gibraltar.

Into our first European campaign, we beat Floriana of Malta before valiantly losing to HJK in the next round. The bank balance is just under £2million so going in the right direction.

2nd season and another domestic double. Lots of interest in my players but all but one have been happy to accept new amateur contracts whenever other clubs came calling. (who needs wages when you're winning!). The board okayed a couple of improvements to junior coaching and youth recruitment which are now adequate and average respectively.

On the international front, we arranged a couple of "gimme" friendlies against Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands which we won.

3rd season is done. A third domestic double with an entertaining and profitable European campaign. We beat Shamrock Rovers and Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League qualifying before going out to Malmo. We then lost the Europa League playoff Olimpija before going into the Conference League and losing every single game!

We lost some key players who were on non-contracts but some of the youngsters are starting to step up. The board has agreed to make us fully professional at the end of the season so hopefully we can now crack on developing players.

On the international side, we had competitive wins against Malta (home and away) and Latvia (at home) in the Nations League and Nanni is now the all-time top scorer.

Might try the Idaly (D5) by Timo off the steam workshop.  Same author as listed in the first post of the thread.  Possibly the same  and/or updated database from the start of the season.

(Or search Timo in the workshop search bar and see if another fits)

Yep, that's what I'm using....problem is that the link is no longer valid.  I did a quick check on steam workshop, and that particular DB isn't there any longer.  Timo has a ton of DBs posted, and the only one that looks like it might work is the Italy (D5).  I will try to find the original if I still have it and throw it up on a filesharing page, if I can

Here is a link to the original Timo File, uploaded to my mediafire account for those that need it.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/163yzzxv4gcra1x/Italy_%28D5%29_-_By_%40Timo%40.fmf/file

just place it in your //documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2023/editor data   folder and fire up a new game.

I may not have clicked on the link but searched for the database on steam myself then, not 100% sure now. The one im using is named Italy (D5) - by @timo@. Last updated 6 May @ 1.53pm if that helps.

Picking things up with my Pennarossa save. I usually play with the first season transfer window disabled, so am stuck with Pennarossa's default squad, with perhaps an inordinate amount of pressure on some of the Sammarinese veterans like midfielder Maicol Berretti and 29-year old Mattia Stefanelli up front. We also have 27-year old Italian Alessandro Conti, one of only 2 squad members rated at 5 stars for the division by the coaching staff.

First off was Fiorita at "home", although stadiums in the country are actually randomly allocated for each game in the Campianato - This time, we were at the Igor Crescentini, a short drive up the road from our home castello of Chiesanuova.

An air of mystery for my coaching debut in Montegiardino:

Take that, Thomas Manfredini! We ended up running out 1-0 winners, with Moroccan youngster Ismael Bahi moving from the left wing to attacking midfield to start the second half. The move paid off, and he scored the winner in the 61st minute after skipping through the La Fiorita defence.

Next up, Libertas at the Federico Crescentini. Let's hope we can keep up the 100% record...

One of the craziest matches I've played yet.  2nd leg of Europa Semi-final after 2-2 home draw.  Missing 2 starters, with two others on limited duty due to recovering from injury.  Four of my goals were from set-pieces, including one of the first I've seen from a corner taken short, given back to the corner taker, crossed in and headed home.

Sadly, Chelsea keeper made two great saves to start the shootout, one low left corner, next lower-right corner, and we didn't recover.
Still, well done by the lads to make the semi-final and give Chelsea a few grey hairs.
Still in potential ECL spot with 3 to play in league as well.

Been a while since I've had much worth updating here, but finally getting to Div B.  Not that I think we'll be able to stay up, but we have been promoted from Div C!  Tough Group in Euro Qual's next year, we'll likely finish 4th out of 5.  Just had one of my two 5* NT players retire after 124 caps (DL that I found early on.... I suspect my AMR 5* isn't much further behind), so at least one hole that needs to be filled with not a lot of quality in sight.

Still, we're up to 145 in the world, and inching forward slowly!
