[FM22] The Great San Marino Challenge

Recommended Posts

I have been following this thread for a while, really enjoying the contributions. I had been on a 'build a nation' save for Scotland, but it had gotten slightly stale. Fired up this custom DB and just reached November in-game. Running a 4-2-4 Custom Gegenpress I developd on my other save which has been really effective in the Eccelenza. I am currently unbeaten, with only 1 draw. Bardeggia and Voinea have been instrumental.

I have also won a game with the NT, beating Andorra 3-1, before losing a combined 28-0 against Poland (6), Albania (3), Hungary (4) and England (15).

In terms of recruitment, what was everybody's strategy? I am constantly bombarded with scout reports for abysmal players and judging by the early peeks I have taken at our future Serie D opponents, there is a step up, but then a pretty significant step up in Serie C.

We blew through Eccelenza, although we never won in the Cup - and it appears one cup never spawned as some people are playing 3 trophies in the first season?

Serie D we are in November, 16 games played, 35 pts, but Castellanzese and Desenzano Calvino are a step better than us, both on 40 pts. I deliberately lost in the Serie D cup to focus on the league as I have a fairly thin squad and the Board weren't pushing too hard on it. I beat Desenzano but it was like the Last of the Alamo. I think the likelihood is we will be here until next season at the very least but I will keep my hopes up.

On the international front, we are incredibly inconsistent. I have managed 15 games and have a record of 3-3-9. We came back from 4 down to draw with Kazakhstan thanks to the legend that is Nanni to end a pretty tough Nations League D group with 4 points, having beaten Latvia at home. Our GD was only -6, despite being drawn in the 4 team pathway which I am pleased with. Nanni is currently on 7 intl goals, so he will beat Selva's record soon enough, likely in the next round of friendlies where I have targetted two teams in the 180s (Sao Tome/South Sudan) who I believe we could go 2 for 2 against.

@6499red Broke Andy Selvas Goal Record

Unfortunately just missed out on promotion from International League Group D. Had a man go down against Latvia with 10 minutes to play and went down a goal. Nicola "The Machine" Nanni breaks the record, though. Also, coming in under top 200 in the world!

So question.  I know there was an issue with the dynamic youth rating not working as expected when the game first came out.  Has this issue been resolved?  Has anyone see it actually start to move?   If you have, are you playing as Victor San Marino or are you playing in the San Marino league?   I am in 2027 now and San Marino still has a youth rating of 29 despite everything that I have accomplished as Folgore/Falciano.  On the club level we have qualified for the group stage of the champions league, with a couple of San Marino players in our stating XI but at the nation level we still languish at 207th in the world and I am only able to win about a 1/3 of our games even against lower competition.

How can you find the DYR? I'm assuming you have to use an in-game editor?

Yea, the only way to find it is the in-game editor.   I turn it on to look at it each year at the end of the season because I wanted to track to see if it changed.

2023/2024 Season

San Marino National Team

We managed to finish 4th in the Euro Quals with 2 wins against Faroe Islands and one against Armenia.  We still lost heavily to England, but did score 1 - I won't mention they scored 10 in both in games...  We're 186th in the world.

Victor San Marino

I was completely ruthless with my Serie D winning squad.  Only 3 regular starters were retained - all Sammarinese - Fabbri in the centre of defense and 2 new gens (1 youth product, 1 I signed from San Marino Academy).  In came 6 on loan.  The fixture list was kind to us early on and we got an excellent start.  With morale up, we kept going when we played the bigger boys.  We had a couple of blips - in December and then late in the year when the nerves really hit us - but going into the last round of fixtures, Cesena played earlier than us and needed to win to put pressure on us.  They drew 0-0 and we were Champions of Serie C!!  Once again, this side will be gutted - I might have 3 or 4 I'll have on the bench - but it will be an all new starting XI.  Finances are good as only 1 of the loans cost us any money.

Italian heavy - but 2 OK Sammarinese prospects, although with 3 promotions in a row, we are rather outgrowing our intakes.

Europe was fun.  We did OK in the Champions league - winning the Prelim rounds easily and then winning the first qual round before running into Young Boys and losing 5-0.  We then drew Qarabag in the Europa League and went straight out, losing both legs 4-2.  Drawing Mjallby of Sweden in the Conference League final qual round, we put together a fine performance to win the first leg 2-0 at home.  We went 1-0 up in the second leg and hung on to win 3-2 on aggregate to make the Conference League group stage, which was massive for us financially.  We stank in that - losing every game in a tough group - but the prize money allowed us to turn professional and start to upgrade some facilities.

Thanks man. You're going to have to give me some tips on how you survived Serie C with Sammarinese and youth intake only! Unfortunately I can't get a Berardi/Nanni on loan, so the quality is just so different.

After an unbelievable second half of the season in Serie D - losing only 3 games from November until May, we done the unthinkable and overtook the two runaway leaders and held on by the skin of our teeth to go up to Serie C.

As expected Serie C was a massive jump in quality and I didn't really build a squad capable of competing. We went winless in 8 to start, before I finally had to say goodbye to the 4-2-4 and go for a 5-3-2 and try and work the match engine to avoid the dreaded relegation. We didn't do much better in all fairness, but we started scoring much more goals. We finished the season having the 3rd best goals scored, but the worst defensive record in the league to finish a respectable 12th on 47pts, one point outside of the final playoff spot. Given the team that got promoted through the playoff beat me 2-0 and 5-1, I don't think we would have stood a snowballs chance in hell even if we had made it. I have included a screenshot of some of our incredible results early season.

For the national team, 2023 was a pretty poor affair. We failed to beat my engineered friendly opponent in Sao Tome, drawing 1-1 thanks to a late equaliser, and in our Euros Group we only got 4pts, beating Gibraltar and drawing with them. A close game against Armenia saw us lose 2-1 in the dying embers and the remainder of the games were not competitive. 2024 saw a more upbeat take, with us beating Indonesia and Guam 4-2, while losing 4-1 to Lithuania and Montengro. Our Nations League Group is winnable with Andorra and Luxembourg. Nanni has long since taken Andy Selva's crown and is the lynchpin of the national side, alongside Francioni who I signed from the San Marino Academy and plays nearly every game for Victory. We are 201st in the world, so hopefully break the 200 mark this year and get in to the next Nations League level.

We are much more robust for Serie C this year, having signed Nanni on a free after his Crotone contract ran out, Leonardo Mazza who is a Lower League legend for Italy, and I bought Colombo to take care of his development for the NT after selling my normal GK for just shy of 100k and we have brought in significant depth. I don't know if we are strong enough to win the league, but I think the top 1/3 and a playoff spot has to be a minimum expectation.

From this point on I started to take the national team seriously and it showed. There were some good results. The win against Malta was the biggest win. In both games against Andorra I came 1-0 up but it ended both times on 1-1 so we could have gotten more in the Nations League this year.

With Folgore I am 3 and a half seasons undefeated. It is going very easy. I managed tot get to the Europa League group stages twice, ending third so went to the Conference League. This is the furthest I have gotten:

Facilities

bae18321eb160f7bf26552a1804eb556.png

For now I am at a good place. We are making money every year and we put it in our facilities. Every time I go in a group stage (Europa of Conference League doesn't matter) I can improve facilities again. Hopefully I get some decent players the upcoming years. Nicola Nanni get's 4 starts on club level so every player in our youth academy with at least 3 stars potential is already really good.

We are now pro and Tre Penne is also pro. Hopefully other teams wil get pro too and get good achievements in Europe. Unfortunately they are not doing good

At the end of 24/25, we have once again defied odds and slipped up a division!

We were very patchy in Serie C, there were four strong teams in us, Modena, Cesena and Ascoli who regularly took points off one another. Siena were very strong in the first half of the season but fell away quite significantly in the latter part of the season due to an injury crisis. On the final day of the season, Modena, myself and Cesena were all on 79pts. We all won so the table did not change and I had to undertake the dreaded Serie C playoff which involves everyone and their granny. Our team were quite knackered by this point in the season, and an international break in which all my Sammarinese players were away nearly killed us. This was - essentially - my fault as I should have realised and not called them up...

We snuck by Avellino after a first tie loss, beat then drew with Cesena then blew away Padova in the final. As per usual with this 5-3-2, we are goal machines and concede almost as many. I have long since abandoned the hope that Serie C players have the capacity to keep clean sheets and have just burdened myself with instead creating a style of play where we can outscore our weaknesses.

The NT were involved in a record high scoring game, besting our 4-4 with Kazakhstan by instead winning 6-4 versus the HUUUUGE footballing nation of.... Comoros. We are 188th in the World now, and I have plotted a path to get us up to the 160s by moneyballing our friendlies against overvalued teams. Comoros were 152nd but had no real players and their attribute values were incredibly weak. Papua New Guinea are in 148th in my game, and are my next lambs to the slaughter. Solomon Islands  and Niger are in the 130s and I think are inherently beatable too - however I played them before and drew so I am worried there may be a reputation difference in which they are favoured by the Match Engine.

Youth Intakes have been incredibly poor both for myself and for San Marino Academy (who I didn't know were an affilitate and paid money for a player).

Looks like 3 years in Serie D helped for this season! After a slow start, we managed to go on a huge unbeaten run (lots of draws) before tailing away at the end. The gruelling effort of the playoffs meant I had to play with my 2nd string a few times and hoped my first team could recover in the 2nd leg - as well as needing some early help from the ridiculous higher placed team goes through if drawing rule.

Can't imagine going straight through Serie B - but with an easier path to promotion than the other leagues, stranger things have happened...

Does anyone know if the issue with the national teams under18s/under19s has been fixed yet? I noticed on fm21 and on my current save that after a few years the San Marino under19s only play friendlies. Not a clue if this has an effect on the DYR etc.

I haven't seen anywhere that it's been fixed - still certainly an issue with mine.  It's not going to make any difference to DYR as that new "feature" is bugged and for us with San Marino won't move at all.  SI have acknowledged there's an issue with smaller nations, but even if it was working as they wanted, I don't think it would move as users like us would want if that makes sense!  Basically, ignore DYR for now unfortunately.

The same happened on my save. I don't have a fix, but for me it helped to go on holiday for a year until the next season started, and after that everything updated, including promotions/relagations. I suggest you try to holiday first to see if thats the case on your save too, and if it works you can go back to your old save file and do it again but come back for every national game. You'll have no income that year however, so you might want to cancel loans etc to save some money.
