I'd avoid that to be honest - 4GB RAM isn't ideal, you really want 8GB at least these days, plus the CPU isn't great and it only has 64GB storage.

Something like this would be better: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/asus-vivobook-k553ea-15.6-laptop-intel-core-i5-512-gb-ssd-silver-10224577.html

So need more RAM, CPU and Storage. Thanks they want her to utilise the surface go. Not sure why? Any thoughts on why they would pick these models?

Perhaps the portability? Other than that, I don't know. The Surface machines on the whole aren't great for the price in terms of the spec.

Hi there,

Any ideas how this would run FM23 graphics wise?

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1481312?clickSR=slp:term:huawei matebook:2:39:1

Current laptop is fine processing wise but getting really frustrated with not being able to run the 3D graphics smoothly.

I need a laptop for work to use everyday, mainly browser based stuff with plenty of tabs open etc, that can ideally also run FM23 well on the side.

Budget £500-800

It'd be ok for medium settings, possibly higher.

Thoughts on the base model of the M2 MacBook Air? Its looking like Cyber Monday may be the last chance to get a good MB before the prices are hiked when the next models come out, looking at what's happened with iPad, iPhone, MB Pro etc.

By base model I mean 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD 13in screen.

Haven't played FM since 19, but figure that's the most heavy-duty task I'd ever use it for. I've had a 2012 Air for the last decade, keeping it one an older software that can still run the 32-bit FMs and its generally fine for all my Internet needs (but struggles to wake up at under 40% battery in winter). My usual FM db on 19 was up to 12 leagues (4 levels in where I'm based, if available, plus a bunch of top EU ones) in a Medium database for around 35,000 players. The fan would run heavily the entire time the app was open, and I'd have to balance it on my left thigh so that hot bit wasn't touching anything. Given the new Air doesn't have a fan and definitely isn't for "gaming" (which I don't think FM counts as in this context), does it overheat? Allow you to comfortably run a large db? Or any other way you can think of explaining the pros/cons of it (other than the price haha, its a lot but I like nice things).

Also if anyone has used the Midnight one, does it still look ok? As in the review I read it looked very fingerprint-y from a day's use.

Specs-wise, the M1 & M2 based Macs are absolutely fine.  As for the rest, you're probably best asking in the thread linked below for feedback regarding the game running on Mac:

Thanks, if I'd seen that thread I wouldn't have needed to bother you! Got myself one sealed off eBay about £400 under RRP so I may yet come back to FM!

What are peoples thoughts on this:

XUM Gaming PC Desktop Computer: I7-3770 3.4GHz,GT 730 2GB GPU,16GB DDR3 RAM,256GB NVME M.2 SSD,1TB HDD,500W PSU,LEGEND ARGB CASE,600Mbps WiFi,Windows 10… https://amzn.eu/d/i0vlW0G

Honestly..... pretty poor.

That's got a 10 year old CPU and a very low spec graphics card.  To call it a gaming PC is pretty misleading.

This is an extra £50, but you get a better CPU with it: https://www.box.co.uk/11EX003AUK-Lenovo-ThinkCentre-M70s-Intel-Core-i5-8G_4144588.html

I am looking for a desktop or laptop that can handle recording and playing.

Any ideas or advice?

I know, it looks like it was designed to mislead - because it has an (old) i7, (slow DDR3) 16GB RAM and (terrible) graphics card, all with that flashy looking RGB lighting.

Hi all,

Long time since I've played an FM game or owned a laptop (been playing CM0102 on an old Samsung netbook for years now after getting bored of each new FM game, think 2009 was actually the last one I bought). Been getting into FM23 Console on the Xbox and it's made me want to use it as an excuse to get a new laptop. Will mainly use it for FM and possibly a bit of OOTP Baseball / Franchise Hockey Manager 9, doubt I'll use it for any other gaming but would like to use the 3D match engine in FM.

Hoping to use the Tier 10 mod with England loaded but potentially add a handful of other nations as I move up the leagues, maybe 5 or 6 in total. Also keen to use some of the kits/logos/faces/skins but doubt I'll be too adventurous.

Budget is probably £400ish. If there's a massive difference in overall quality between the best suitable £400 one and one that's £450-500 then I'll be tempted to go for it.

Thanks in advance and sorry if I've missed any obvious info you'll need!

Great, thank you! Appreciate the quick reply.

I saw that one linked in an earlier reply but disregarded it when I saw the key features mentioned Windows S mode. Can see in the spec that they mention a free switch to home and also saw you'd posted a guide to switching in the thread too, so all good.

Must admit, I completely missed that it was in S mode but it does seem to be easy to switch out of that.

Nope - avoid.

It doesn't say which i5 CPU it has and the graphics card is even worse than the other one.

I'd call that slightly better than the other laptop.  Graphics card is the same but the CPU is a bit stronger.

Hey bit of a niche one. I only really play FM but I do tend to run big games (130k+ players) and I'm really noticing it being a bit more sluggish on this years game (either that or my patience is waining with age). In terms of my PC I have quite a powerful setup 32gb DDR4 RAM, a GTX 1070 8gb Graphics Card, and an i7 6700 processor. I can't imagine the graphics card or the quantity of RAM is slowing me down (I appreciate it might run faster if I upgraded to DDR5 but that will involve a new motherboard).

So I was thinking if I upgraded my CPU to an i7 7700 or 7700k will I feel any noticable performance differences or do I need to do a more comprehensive rebuild with a new motherboard?

Or am I maybe just hitting the limits of what FM can cope with?

There is definitely a performance increase with either of those two (more so with the 7700k it would seem), but it's hard to quantify how much of an uplift it would be.

The amount of RAM you have and the graphics card won't affect the game speed, but the RAM speed may have an impact, although I don't imagine it would be huge.

I've had my current PC for 7-and-a-half years. A few weeks ago, I started hearing loud, intermittent whirring noises coming from the power supply. I've also noticed that one of the system fans will not spin at all, even after replacing it.

Otherwise, the system has continued to run fine up until yesterday, when it started freezing and restarting while I was holidaying through an FM experiment. No BSOD. No indications that the GPU or CPU were overheating either. It's done this twice in 24 hours.

From what I've read, it looks like the power supply might be failing. I'm not sure whether it's practical to buy a new PSU for such an old computer, or if I should just upgrade to a whole new system. Here are my current specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790 (3.6GHz base, 4GHz turbo)
RAM: 16GB (1600 MHz)
SSD: 1TB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745

Ideally, I'd want something that could run a long-term save with about 60 leagues and 100,000 players. On FM21, I had a journeyman save with all the European leagues loaded (around 80 leagues), and it ran fine for 11 seasons before processing got too slow for me.

Outside of FM, I play other strategy and management games like Age of Empires, Civilization and Motorsport Manager. The occasional adventure game too, but I'm not fussed about high-end graphics.

Also, I listen to music (either streaming or iTunes) while playing FM. The audio sometimes pauses while the game is processing through days (it happens often on deadline days).

Budget would be around £1200, though I could maybe go a little higher.

Thanks. That is almost exactly what I was looking at before I asked.

I just wasn't sure which processor to go for (5600X or 5700X, or even the 5900X as you suggested), or how many cores I would need.

You can't go wrong with any of them, but seeing as the 5900X fits within the budget and it is definitely the best one of the three, I went for that.

Hi again, @kevhamster

Still undecided on what to get. Would you say this : https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/acer-nitro-5-core-i7-11800h-16gb-512gb-ssd-geforce-rtx-3060-15.6-inch-windo-nh.qfmek.001/version.asp

Is worth the additional outlay over this: https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/acer-nitro-5-core-i5-12500h-16gb-512gb-ssd-geforce-rtx-3050ti-15.6-inch-win-nh.qfkek.001/version.asp

It's the 36 months 0% finance that appeals. I'll mainly be using it for FM and a Adobe CC.

I already have an I7-880U -16gb, but I'm looking for something that will be able to handle more leagues.

Both are excellent to be honest - the more expensive done does have both the better CPU and the better graphics card.

If you feel comfortable paying the extra, then you'll definitely be getting a better spec.  If you're on the fence, then I'd still say the cheaper one would do an excellent job.

I'm looking for a GPU that can comfortably run FM 2023. If all else is fine, will a AMD RX 580 4GB suffice or should I look for something better?

Yes, that will have no issue with FM's graphics.

Depends - if you're in Windows, yes it should be.  If you have a Macbook, it depends on which version of MacOS you have.

If you're happy with the current specs of your machine, it'd be a heck of a lot cheaper to just get the drive replaced.  But if you definitely want to buy a new laptop, let me know and I'll look at what's around.

How easy is it to get the drive replaced / how do I do it? I'm not very techy at all

It's one of the easiest things to do in terms of laptop repair, but if you're unsure how I certainly wouldn't do it yourself.

My suggestion would be to take it to a local computer repair shop and they can give you a quote to do it.  Just to check, are you definitely sure it's the drive which has malfunctioned?

This makes me think it is. A few friends that are more experienced with tech have said similar. Took it into a repair shop today. 😄
