CaptainPlanet
Looking through the expiring contracts on FM looking for a bargain or two, I managed to pick up a whole XI of players right at the end of their careers all on free transfers. All of them are aged 34+ and for a laugh they are going to be my starting XI for next season! Going to be interesting how well they do!
Canaries Fan
I'd recommend playing a deep defensive line to compensate for the lack of pace.
VonBlade
Good luck with that. I've never been convinced that FM isn't 99% bias towards pace/physical stats. A team full of Valderrama's could be very interesting indeed.
martinji
Yeah I'll be very interested if you post the results. It's the sort of thing I've always imagined doing but never got around to.
ozzyoscy
But are they actually seen as being at a Liga BBVA level? It's tempting to sign old names because of what they used to be.

A team full of Valderrama's could be very interesting indeed. I'm not sure about FM2009, but for FM2014 at least things feel more normalized. Quicker players are obviously still quicker, but not to the extent that they blow away everyone in their wake. I wonder if a greater emphasis has been placed on hidden mental attributes too as, and this is subjective, older players seem more consistent and in my experience, teams without experience seem more prone to collapses. Yeah definitely. In my current save I have a guaranteed 25-30 goals/season striker in Conference Premier with acceleration 8 and pace 9 whereas my defenders with similar quickness attributes rarely struggle with pace. There's much more emphasis on movement and technique these days, at least it feels like that to me.
CaptainPlanet
FM09 is, unfortunately, very heavily geared towards Physical Stats. Which is what will make this experiment quite fun and challenging! I've recently been playing 40 year old Michael Carrick alongside a 39 year old Xabi Alonso in a 4-2-3-1 formation and they still did relatively well when they could stay fit. So I have some hope for most of the team. It's the strikers that worry me the most as am going to be reliant on long shots more that usual.
Äktsjon Männ
Wasn't fm09 also very good for oldies in terms of longevity? I seem to remember the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and John Terry playing into their 40's for their AI teams in my saves.

twiddlestix
what's your policy going to be on injuries and subs?
kingjericho
Are all of them still good? Playing in teams like Numancia, Frosinone or Toluca those three maybe aren't that good anymore...
CaptainPlanet
Varying levels of ability from the looks of things, some are still playing top flight stuff, others have been rotting away. Most still have good technical and/or mental stats - they're all damn slow though! Rooney, David Silva and Ronaldo are also all available, but at the moment they don't want to join me. CaptainPlanet
List of other available players, so think I might for a full squad of 23!
JackJCFC
I had a regen CM from the age of 18-38 and his best seasons came aged 36/37 so it's definitely possible to get them to perform, though this guy was world class.
CaptainPlanet
what's your policy going to be on injuries and subs?I'm worried about fitness levels and injury levels. No idea how I'll cope!

INV
How on earth is 32y.o. Gareth Bale valued 1.4mln....
Äktsjon Männ
How on earth is 32y.o. Gareth Bale valued 1.4mln.... I don't think he was rated as a superstar forward in 2008...
baboyray
Some squad you have there
CaptainPlanet
Not doing too bad after 5 games. Central midfield is a bit of an issue. Got nobody who can pass. Played Rooney alongside Messi in the middle of the park in my last game just for some creativity!
VonBlade
Given how often Cacares got sent off for me, I hope Zapata is fit as a fiddle because he's going to get a lot of games unless you switch to 3 at the back.
CaptainPlanet
Cacares is doing badly, as are all of the central midfielders. Still 3rd in the League though. Mata and Bale and the creative forces supplying key passes for Suarez and Ronaldo to put away.
kingjericho
Maybe you can use two DMs with the main focus on defending and then use a AMR-C-L line for some creativity.
