Northern Ireland - May 2030/31

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

28.05.31 - Four Associations Tournament - Republic of Ireland v Northern Ireland : 1-1 : Our Four Associations Tournament got back under way as we faced our closest of rivals, the Republic of Ireland at wet and windy Hampden Park. Matt McKay put us into an early lead with a great 25 yarder from a free kick but just 2 minutes later, the Republic were back on level terms as Billy Harper nodded in from close range. That’s how it stayed for the remainder of the game as our final game against the Scots will proved to be a decider of who wins the tournament.

30.05.31 - Four Associations Tournament - Northern Ireland v Scotland : 0-0 : We had just 2 days rest before we were back in action against Scotland but we knew that all we needed was a draw (due to our better goal difference) if we wanted to win the tournament…and that’s what we managed to get as we held the Scots to a 0-0 draw meaning that it was us who lifted the tournament trophy…albeit an insignificant trophy.

Four Associations Tournament Group : The 2 draws this month against the Republic of Ireland and Scotland proved to be enough for us to lift the tournament trophy for the 1st time in the nations history :). Thanks to that tournament win, it means that we rise back up 2 places to 7th in the world .

Northern Ireland - Season Review 2030/31

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

European Championship Qualifiers Group D : We currently sit 2nd in our European Championship Qualifiers Group after 3 games. With our remaining 5 games coming next season, we’re in a promising position to qualify from the group.

Four Associations Tournament Group : A tight group saw us lift the Four Associations Tournament (albeit on goals scored) for the 1st time in Northern Ireland’s history. An insignificant trophy but nevertheless, a trophy for us…something that Northern Ireland rarely, if at all, ever see.

Squad : With the squad fairly settled now and with players such as Matt McKay, Andy Cooley and Glenn Donnelly doing the business for us at this level, I have to be delighted with the squad of players I have at my disposal. Yes, we’ve got probably one of the strongest Northern Irish sides in recent times but it’d be nice if we could get a couple more young starlets coming through the ranks.

My views of the season… : A steady season for us as we look favourites, along with Czech Republic, to qualify from our European Championship Qualifying Group while we also lifted the Four Associations Tournament.

My aims for next season… : To qualify for the European Championships.

Former club watch

Long Eaton United : Finished 8th in their debut season in the Championship, 7 points off a play-off place.

Burton Albion : Finished 13th in League One, middle of the table.

Leeds United : Dropped off a little as they finished 14th in the Premier League, 8 points off relegation.

Nottingham Forest : Finished 3rd in the Premier League (10 points behind winners Manchester United) their highest position since the days of Frank Clark and with that, qualify for the Champions League :).

Celtic : Won the SPL by 7 points ahead of Hibernian and also won the Scottish FA Cup.

Northern Ireland - Season Expectations 2031/32

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

Northern Ireland

European Championships Qualification expectation : Be competitive in the group

My views for the season ahead… : With 3 games gone so far in our European Championship Qualification Group, it’s already looking like ourselves and Czech Republic will be the ones that are favourites for the 2 qualification spots. With 5 games left though we obviously can’t take anything for granted as there’s still a lot of hard work to do to make sure that we qualify.

Northern Ireland - June 2031/32

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

06.06.31 - European Championship Qualifiers Group D - Northern Ireland v Hungary : 3-0 : We battered the Hungarians as Marty O’Connor and Gareth Patterson grabbed the goals for us to keep pace with the Czech’s.

10.06.31 - European Championship Qualifiers Group D - Northern Ireland v Finland : 4-1 : We repeated the demolition of Finland as like in our first meeting in the group we put 4 past them as Alan McKenna, Richard McGarvey and Gareth Patterson scored the goals for us this time around.

European Championship Qualifiers Group D : The 2 wins against Hungary and Finland this month puts us in a very strong position within the group as both us and Czech Republic sit 9 points clear of 3rd place Hungary. With Hungary needing to win all of their remaining games now though, qualification is almost a certainty for us :).

Really enjoyed this story.

Any chance you will go back to club management?

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the read :D

As for getting back into club management, once the Euro's are finished in 2032 (at the end of this season) I'll be leaving my post as Northern Ireland manager and will hopefully find a club quite soon. I have the English, Scottish, French, German, Spanish and Italian leagues loaded so there should be a job that pops up that takes my fancy :D

Northern Ireland - September 2031/32

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

05.09.31 - European Championship Qualifiers Group D - Czech Republic v Northern Ireland : 0-5 : A massive top of the group clash saw us surprisingly dispose of the Czech’s in comfortable fashion as a goal from Glenn Donnelly and 4 from Gareth Patterson confirms our qualification from the group with 2 games in hand :).

09.09.31 - European Championship Qualifiers Group D - Northern Ireland v Liechtenstein : 3-0 : Having already qualified from the group now, we needed to make sure that we win our remaining 2 games so a comfortable 3-0 win against bottom of the group Liechtenstein was exactly what we needed as we go into our final game of the group with our fate in our own hands.

European Championship Qualifiers Group D : 2 wins out of 2, with one of them coming against Czech Republic sees qualify for Euro 2032 with relative ease. Just a point in our final game against Hungary will see us win our group, one which a lot of people in the media questioned our ability to get out of.

10.10.31 - European Championship Qualifiers Group D - Hungary v Northern Ireland : 1-1 : Whether or not complacency crept in having already qualified from the group I’m not sure but we were far from our best as we struggled against the Hungarians. Luckily though, Garth Close came off the bench to rescue a point for us which was all we needed to win our group :).

European Championship Qualifiers Group D : The final group sees us finish top, a point ahead of Czech Republic meaning that we’ll be in Sweden for Euro 2032! :)

Nice to see a Northern Ireland side that isn't completely terrible

Not completely terrible...but at times we've come close! :)

Well done qualifying Raware.

Thanks Nobby. We were always amongst the favourites to qualify from that group, but as you know, it's sometimes tough to reach those expectations.

Northern Ireland - November 2031/32

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

With qualification for the European Championships now over, we have no competitive games until summer next year. The world rankings were released this month and thanks to our great European Championship qualification campaign, we’ve jumped to 7th in the world.

Again, no game for us this month but the Euro 2032 draw was made which puts us in a tough group alongside Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina and Germany. Obviously the Germans are red hot favourites to finish top of the group while Belgium are also favourites to qualify so it’s going to be a difficult ask for us to get out of the group.

No game for us this month but the world rankings saw us stay 7th in the world. Some bad news for us this month though as after my previous assistant Colin Cooper retired a couple of seasons ago, my current assistant Steve Chettle has just announced his retirment at the end of the season.

Northern Ireland - May 2031/32

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

29.05.32 - Friendly - Northern Ireland v Latvia : 2-0 : Our first warm up game in preparation for the Euro’s saw us take on Latvia at Windsor Park in front of 10659 fans. Having not had an international get together since the end of last year, it was important that we hit the ground running to gain some kind of momentum going in to the Euro’s next month and we did that as the strong line-up that I decided to field did the job against an inferior Latvian side as Glenn Donnelly and Sean Armstrong got the goals for us.

Not only did the win against Latvia give us some momentum going in to the Euro’s next month but it also pushed us further up the world rankings as we rose to 4th in the world :).

05.06.32 - Friendly - Northern Ireland v Azerbaijan : 2-1 : We completed our Euro’s preparation by welcoming Azerbaijan to Windsor Park in our final game before we started our European Championship campaign in 11 days time. With many people, including myself expecting a fairly comfortable win for us, the away side took a shock lead as Aziz Hilalov netted from close range to put the visitors 1-0 up. But, we responded well as Gerry Garrett put us back on level terms 10 minutes later and then Richard McGarvey sealed the win for us 20 minutes from time.

Northern Ireland - European Championships 2032

Preview

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

The odds for the upcoming European Championships were released a few months ago which placed France, Spain, Holland and Italy as co-favourites while we’ve been priced as long shots at 200-1. With Germany, Belgium and Bosnia & Herzegovina in our group, the Germans are obviously everyone’s favourite to win the group. We need to look at our games against Belgium and Bosnia if we’re to have any chance of getting out of the group.

Northern Ireland - European Championship 2032

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

14.06.32 - European Championship Group A - Northern Ireland v Belgium : 2-1 : We began our Euro 2032 campaign off with possibly the most important game for us in our group as it would probably be the result of this game that determines the team that takes the 2nd qualification spot. Things started well for us as Gareth Patterson put us into an early lead but the Belgians hit back almost immediately as Yannick Becker put them back on level terms. We took the lead again just before the half hour mark thanks to Glenn Donnelly as we started to dominate the game. While we didn’t add to the score line, the Belgians surprisingly never looked like causing us any more problems as we saw out the game to claim a very important win :).

19.06.32 - European Championship Group A - Germany v Northern Ireland : 1-0 : While we managed to hold the Germans to 2 draws in our World Cup Qualifying group 3 years ago, we were always massive underdogs in this game and was always going to face an uphill struggle against a very strong Germany side. They dominated us from the first minute to the last and in truth they should of beat us by 3 or 4 goals, but in the end I can’t complain about the 1-0 defeat as it leaves us with a great chance of qualifying with just one game remaining.

22.06.32 - European Championship Group A - Northern Ireland v Bosnia & Herzegovina : 3-1 : Our final group game saw us going into it 3 points behind leaders Germany and level on points with Belgium. However, Belgium were facing Germany in their last game so it gave us a chance of finishing 2nd in the group if we could do the business against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Things started well for us as Glenn Donnelly put us into the lead just after the half hour mark and then things got even better for us as Conall Caldwell cut in from the left to smash a rasping shot into the top corner to extend our lead going into half time. Bosnia & Herzegovina pulled a goal back midway through the 2nd half to leave the last 20 minutes very nervy for us but Gerry Garrett calmed everyone’s nerves 2 minutes from time as he confirmed a 3-1 win for us.

With that win, it confirms our qualification from the group :) as we finish 2nd behind group winners Germany. We’ve drawn Ukraine in the 2nd round and given that we beat them 3-1 twice in our 2030 World Cup qualifying group, we can go into the game quietly confident of progressing to the next round. Belgium sneaked into the knockout rounds along with Croatia, Czech Republic and France as the best 3rd placed teams while our neighbours, the Republic of Ireland face a tough test against one of the tournament favourites Germany.

28.06.32 - European Championship 2nd round - Northern Ireland v Ukraine : 1-0 : Having beaten Ukraine 3-1 twice in our World Cup qualifying group 3 years ago we went into this game confident of beating them again. It wasn’t that easy though as the Ukrainians outplayed us and dominated us…luckily for us though, we managed to hold out and snatch a goal on the breakaway thanks to Glenn Donnelly’s 3rd goal of the tournament as we progress to the Quarter Final where we’ll meet Czech Republic :).

03.07.32 - European Championship Quarter Final - Northern Ireland v Czech Republic : 1-1 (4-1 pens) : Czech Republic were in our qualifying group for this tournament as we drew 0-0 with them at our place and then destroyed them 5-0 at theirs so again we were going into a game fairly confident of getting a result. However, we thought that in our last game against the Ukrainians so we had to make sure that we didn’t get complacent against the Czechs. We started well as Glenn Donnelly hit his 4th goal of the tournament on 26 minutes to put us into an early lead but the Czechs responded almost immediately as just 2 minutes later they drew level through Josef Machacek. That’s how the game stayed as we ended both full time and extra time as 1-1 meaning that we had to decide the game on penalties. Thankfully the Czechs missed 2 of theirs as we netted all of ours meaning that we progress to the Semi Final where we’ll meet Belgium!

07.07.32 - European Championship Semi Final - Belgium v Northern Ireland : 2-0 : Amazingly we were drawn against Belgium in the Semi Finals after already playing them in the group stage…where we beat them, so again we were confident of beating them. Things didn’t go to plan though as we failed to reproduce the performance we put in against them first time round as goals from Yannick Becker and Julien Gauthier shattered our dreams of making the final. Still, for a nation like us to make the European Championships let alone the Semi Final is an amazing feat and probably one of my best achievements on this save :).

I always said that after this tournament I’d end my reign as the Northern Ireland manager and given that in the 4 years that I’ve been in charge, I’ve taken them to the Quarter Final of the World Cup and the Semi Final of the European Championship, won the Four Tournaments Trophy and taken them to ranked 4th in the world, I think I can leave them knowing that I’ve done all I could for Northern Ireland so a day after we were knocked out of the European Championships, I handed in my resignation.

Northern Ireland - Season Review 2031/32

NIreland_zpsa5e4fd71.png

European Championship Qualifiers Group D : We topped our group ahead of Czech Republic.

European Championship : We qualified from the group stage and made it all the way to the Semi Final where Belgium ended our hopes.

Squad : Like the World Cup 2 years ago, people wrote us off even before we started but the players proved them all wrong as we made it all the way to the Semi Final! For us to reach that far meant that all of the players performed to the best of their ability but the stand out man for us was undoubtedly Glenn Donnelly who netted 4 goals in 6 games for us.

My views of the season… : An amazing season for us which saw us make it all the way to the Semi Final of the European Championship.

My aims for next season… : I always said that I’d resign after the Euro’s so I’ll now be looking to get back into club management. Which country…I have no idea. I’ll wait and see what comes up :).

Former club watch

Long Eaton United : Finished 5th in the Championship but lost out to QPR in the play-off Semi Finals.

Burton Albion : Finished 8th in League One, 5 points off the play-offs.

Leeds United : Finished 18th in the Premier League and were relegated back to the Championship.

Nottingham Forest : Finished 4th in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League :).

Celtic : Surrended their SPL title to Dundee United as they finished 2 points behind them.

So just a few hours after I resigned from my position as the manager of Northern Ireland, Aston Villa offered me the chance to become their next new manager. A chance to get back into club management and into a league that I know with a good club was too good to turn down :).

Aston Villa : A background

Founded in 1874, Aston Villa are a professional English Football Club currently playing in the English Barclays Premier League. The club play their home games at Villa Park and possess top training facilities and good youth facilities. The club’s training ground is Bodymoor Heath. The Aston Villa youth team play at Bodymoor Heath. The club also has good junior coaching and an established youth recruitment network. The club is affectionately known as The Villans and retains a fierce rivalry with Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion.

Enjoying their greatest spell of success during the 1890’s, The Villans have a history they can be proud of. Boasting a total of 26 competition wins, here are just some of their highlights : Aston Villa won the Champions League in 1982, won the English top division 7 times and are 10 times runners-up, have 7 FA Cup wins to their name and finished 2nd best 6 further times, and finished runners-up in the Intercontinental Cup in 1982.

I join Aston Villa in a time which has seen them struggle over the years, mainly finishing mid table in the Premier League and tasting relegation to the Championship twice.

My views for the season ahead… : There’s no doubt that it’s going to be a difficult season for us, especially as it’s my first at the club, my first back in the Premier League after 4 years and the squad that I’ve inherited has a lot of old players in it on high wages. My initial task will be to trim the squad and cut the wage budget, get some younger players in the team and add some quality to it. Hopefully, if I can manage to do that, we should be able to achieve the boards expectation of a mid table finish. I’ve already started to try and achieve those objectives by bringing in a few players in the form of Ian Little from Everton for £17 million, my captain from my time with Northern Ireland and Leeds United Matt McKay for £8 million and although David Radford contradicts what I said about getting rid of older players and bringing in younger ones, he’s just too good a player not to sign especially when he’s available on a free transfer.

Aston Villa - July 2032/33

Aston Villa

17.07.32 - Friendly - Wycombe Wanderers v Aston Villa : 0-7 : We started our pre-season off with a trip to Adams Park and although it was against inferior opposition, I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my tenure at Aston Villa as goals from Eduardo, David Radford, Marian Zajac and 4 from Lewis Kelly gave us an emphatic 7-0 win :).

21.07.32 - Friendly - Burton Albion v Aston Villa : 0-2 : Our 2nd pre-season game had us visiting a former club of mine as we faced Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium. A fairly comfortable win for us as our front two David Radford and Lewis Kelly continued their impressive partnership by netting a goal each.

24.07.32 - Friendly - Southend United v Aston Villa : 0-2 : A trip to Roots Hall saw us face Southend in another game that was all about gaining fitness and gaining an understanding of the new system that I’ve put in place. Under the previous management, the team played a defensive flat back 4-4-2 so for them to show signs of understanding my preferred style of play so soon, albeit against weaker opposition, is encouraging.

31.07.32 - Friendly Cup Semi Final - Aston Villa v Toulouse : 2-0 : We ended the month with a 2-0 win against French side Toulouse in a Friendly Cup Semi Final meaning that we’ll play Kansas City in the final.

Aston Villa - August 2032/33

Aston Villa

01.08.32 - Friendly Cup Semi Final - Aston Villa v Sporting Kansas City : 1-0 : We claimed the Friendly Cup thanks to a solitary Didier Toure strike.

07.08.32 - Friendly Cup Semi Final - Nagoya Stolz v Aston Villa : 0-2 : We finished our pre-season with a long journey to Japan, not an ideal way to finish pre-season especially with the league starting in a weeks time but it was a friendly that had already been agreed before I joined the club. Once again it was our front two who sealed the win for us as they both claimed a goal each.

14.08.32 - Barclays Premier League - Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers : 2-2 : We kicked off our Premier League campaign with a visit from Blackburn Rovers and within 20 minutes we found ourselves behind through a Mauro strike. We got back into it though as a goal before half time from debutant David Radford and a goal just after half time from Lewis Kelly put us into the lead. We couldn’t hold on though as Mauro scored his 2nd of the game to ensure that both us and Blackburn would have to share the points on the opening day of the season.

21.08.32 - Barclays Premier League - Newcastle United v Aston Villa : 2-2 : A tricky trip to St James’ Park saw us fall behind twice in this game but we responded well each time we conceded as we managed to take a point back to the West Midlands.

24.08.32 - League Cup 2nd Round - Aston Villa v Sunderland : 4-0 : We faced another North East club, our 2nd in 3 days, although this time it was in the League Cup 2nd Round as we welcomed Championship side Sunderland to Villa Park. Sunderland have had a rough time of it on this save in the past 10 years as they were relegated as low as League Two and almost dropped out of the League completely. They didn’t cause us any problems in this game and at times they showed why they’ve been struggling in the lower leagues of English football as we ran out easy 4-0 winners to progress to the next round.

28.08.32 - Barclays Premier League - Aston Villa v Charlton Athletic : 3-1 : Charlton have had a meteoric rise in the past 3-4 seasons after they were taken over by a super rich tycoon who pumped loads of money into their club to take them from League One to the Premiership. However, that tycoon wasn’t there long and sold the club last season and since then they’ve been struggling. We made easy work of them as a brace from Lewis Kelly and a solitary strike David Radford meant that it was us who took all 3 points.

August League Table : 2 draws and a win in our opening 3 games sees us start the season off fairly well as we sit 5th in the league (I forgot to take a screen shot :(). Our strikers have also started well and seem to have struck up a good partnership as they’ve continued their good pre-season form into the season with Lewis Kelly netting 5 goals in 4 games and David Radford netting 3 goals in 4 games.

Would be fun to face Long Eaton and Nottingham Forest both in the Premier League one day. :D

It might not be too far away! Long Eaton are getting closer and finished 5th in the Championship last season, losing to QPR in the play-off semi final.

Good luck Raware! Hope to see you restore Villa back to their glory days \o/

Cheers Becks . You're only a big club if you've won the European Cup and Villa fall into that category :)
