Helsingborg summer transfer window

A quiet one for us, with only two moves:

IN

DM/MC Davy Lemaire (free transfer)

20 years old. Came up with Lille but got only 6 first team matches and wasn't re-signed.

Rated as 3-1/2 star current ability, 4-1/2 star potential, media is comparing him to Yann M'Vila.

Signed through 2025 season on $2,200/week, plus various clauses.

He projects to be the more defensive-minded half of our holding midfield pair.

OUT

DL Tobias Englund ($20,000, Mjallby)

Found himself bumped down to third choice left back and requested a transfer on Deadline Day. We were happy to accommodate him.

We lose $4,000 on this deal (bought for $24,000 from IFK Norrkoping in the winter). Ended up making just 8 appearances for us, 5 of them off the bench.

Helsingborg in control as Mjallby are brushed aside

Helsingborgs IF 2-1 Mjallby AIF (Premier Division)

Helsingborg had their midfield to thank on a fine summer's afternoon at Olympia as they showed their strikers how to finish.

An error from Helsingborgs IF's Johan Sund allowed young striker Magnus Johansson to score a powerful close range effort. Winger Patrik Johansson then equalised for Helsingborgs IF in the 73rd minute with a close range finish which was timed impeccably.

Young midfielder Rasmus Wikman then clinched a late winner on 80 minutes with a deftly executed finish. Wikman's impact delighted the fans with his late goal.

AIK grab deserved win

Helsingborgs IF 2-3 AIK (Premier Division)

AIK continued their prolific campaign with a 3-2 win over Helsingborg at Olympia.

Striker Vladica Bajic got Helsingborgs IF off to a flyer by scoring a good header from just inside the six-yard box on 8 minutes. Young striker David Rajalakso then equalised for AIK in the 21st minute with a curling shot.

Rajalakso then added his 2nd goal of the game with a close range finish which was timed impeccably on 37 minutes. Centre-back Joseph Baffo then equalised for Helsingborgs IF in the 53rd minute with a close range header.

Midfielder Christophe Birgersson scored what proved to be the winner on 76 minutes with a fine header from point-blank range.

Djurgarden ease to victory

Djurgardens IF 2-0 Helsingborgs IF (Premier Division)

A potentially serious injury suffered by Djurgarden's Fernandinho overshadowed events on what was a breezy afternoon at Tele2 Arena.

The first incident of note was on 45 minutes as Djurgardens IF were denied claims by Robert Eriksson for a penalty. Djurgardens IF finally took the lead when midfielder Dan Forsberg scored a freak goal on 50 minutes.

With Helsingborgs IF staring at defeat, there was controversy as centre-back Joseph Baffo then had a penalty shout turned down. Striker Ronnie Engstrom finally rounded off their victory on 75 minutes with a simple finish from close in.

Helsingborg enter race for qualification

Helsingborgs IF 3-2 Malmo FF (Premier Division)

A strike from Vladica Bajic boosted Helsingborg's hopes of continental qualification after a 3-2 victory over Malmo on a breezy afternoon at Olympia.

Striker Vladica Bajic got Helsingborgs IF off to a flyer by scoring a well struck effort from 19 metres on 9 minutes. An error from Malmo FF's Simon Thern allowed midfielder Sal Jobarteh to score a fierce shot. Centre-back Sebastian Ring gave the Malmo FF fans a glimmer of hope after 80 minutes with a fluke goal.

Striker Andreas Nystrom Jensen then equalised for Malmo FF in the 84th minute with a placed shot. Striker Vladica Bajic's red card for ungentlemanly conduct on 86 minutes put Helsingborgs IF's position under question.

Despite being down to ten men, midfielder Jocelyn Kola clinched a late winner on 91 minutes with a well struck effort. Kola's impact delighted the fans with his late goal.

So a really rough stretch of games that may have cost us our shot at Europe. We needed to fight back twice to get a draw at Gefle, who were in 2nd at the time. Then back-to-back-to-back games against 3 of the biggest clubs in Sweden (AIK, Djurgardens and Malmo). Lost a back-and-forth encounter with AIK, didn't turn up against Djurgardens, then gave the supporters a derby match with Malmo they won't soon forget as we choke away a 2-0 lead as we suddenly can't string two passes together, Bajic picks up a second yellow for diving (his first yellow was also for diving. STAY ON YOUR FEET, SON! ), and then the Malmo defense parts like the Red Sea for Jocelyn Kola to come up from midfield and score the winner in injury time. Then on top of all that, we get the new second-placed team IFK Goteborg, who put themselves there on the back of 9 wins on the trot. Considered myself a bit fortunate to get a draw out of it.

The bottom line though is we pick up only 5 points from 15 in that tough stretch. And with teams around us having games in hand (substantial games in hand, as far as AIK is concerned), it's clear we'll need some help down the stretch. That said, AIK's run-in is complicated by them reaching the group stage of the Europa League. They got thrashed by Monchengladbach (7-0. On TV no less), and lost to BATE. They've also got Ajax in their group, so hopefully some more defeats and/or fatigue will set in with them; they have Ajax away during their run-in, and the return leg 4 days after the end of the league season.

For us, we have away trips to Assyriska and Orebro, before closing the season at home against Elfsborg.

Helsingborg edge narrow Assyriska game

Assyriska Foreningen Sodertalje 0-1 Helsingborgs IF (Premier Division)

A young Helsingborg side showed that you can win with kids as they came out on top against a much more experienced Assyriska team on a breezy afternoon at Sodertalje Fotbollsarena.

Centre-back Joseph Baffo gave Helsingborgs IF the lead with a good header from just inside the six-yard box in the 43rd minute.

Despite having a number of corners, Helsingborg found little by way of success.

Helsingborg lost ground in the race for continental qualification after a 3-1 defeat to Orebro on a breezy afternoon at Behrn Arena in the Swedish Premier Division.

Experienced centre-back Naim Aarab gave Orebro SK the lead with an incisive finish from 12 metres in the 44th minute. Midfielder Mohammed Saeid doubled Orebro SK's lead with a powerful effort on 57 minutes.

Striker Vladica Bajic gave the Helsingborgs IF fans a glimmer of hope after 74 minutes with a well timed close range finish. An error from Helsingborgs IF's Shawn Barry allowed striker Emeka Emerun to score a well timed finish from close range.

Helsingborg miss chance to win

Helsingborgs IF 0-0 IF Elfsborg (Premier Division)

IF Elfsborg ensured that Lars Christian Krogh Gerson, playing his last game for Helsingborg, could not end his HIF career with a win as they drew 0-0 at Olympia.

The match began in controversial circumstances as Helsingborgs IF were denied claims by Erdin Demir for a penalty. The decision to disallow a 64th minute IF Elfsborg goal proved most controversial amongst the team's supporters.

Helsingborg had a number of attempts at goal but their profligacy meant they didn't score as many as they maybe would have liked.

Well, we blew it. There's no other way to put it. A disappointing season comes to a frustrating end with a damp squib of a game against Elfsborg. Win and we're in Europe in the summer. And instead we just mail it in.

No doubt about it, we've underacheived this season. The board wanted Europe and we didn't deliver. They were also disappointed at our performance in the Europa League (even though they said they just wanted us to learn from the experience, so eh?)

My contract is up at the end of November, but given that my job status is back to "very insecure", I doubt the board will offer the deal that was on the table.

Shame that the season went that way, it was still very tight too. Look forward to seeing if you can keep your job or take on a new challenge.
Wow - a very tight finish from 3rd down to 7th. Just a shame you couldn't get one point more. Hopefully, you can shrug it off and get back up the table next season. :)
Looked like you were going to turn it around. A point off third too :(
Ouch...players decided to go on holiday a bit too early.
It was going so well then your players decided to take a early holiday.Hopefully you'll be able to strengthen for next season and improve on this season.

And as I suspected, the board did not offer a new deal. So I'm out of contract and heading for the dole office.

PAOemblem.svg

Panathinaikos AO Chairman Giannis Alafouzos has offered you a three year contract on $6.75K per week to take the managerial job at OAKA Spyros Louis.

The board will not be judging the team's performance in the Superleague this season.

Transfer Budget: $1,900,000

Wage Budget: $400K per week

Current Player Wage Total: $420K

Had to wait a little while for a good opportunity to pop up. Put in for a couple of MLS jobs: Seattle were "flattered" by my interest, and Toronto were interested, but both opted for managers with MLS experience (mainly, Seattle poaching Frank Klopas from Toronto, and Toronto opting for Ben Olsen)

But the waiting paid off as I've hooked a whale.

Panathinaikos are seriously underachieving this season. They were predicted to finish 3rd, but find themselves languishing in 15th, just 2 points above the drop with 10 matches to go.

They'd finished runners up to Olympiakos 7 consecutive seasons, before a shakeup in the Greek order of things saw PAOK win the title and Xanthi come runner up last season.

The club itself is in decent shape. The finances are "Okay", and there are more than 11,000 season ticket holders (about half again as many as Helsingborg would average for games).

The stadium rent is quite pricey ($1.66M per year, plus 10% of the gate).

Otherwise, we have:

Good training facilities

Good youth facilities

Excellent junior coaching

Extensive youth recruitment

We're past the transfer window, so the current players are all I have to work with. As you can see, we're above the wage budget, so we'll have to conduct a thorough review of who's actually earning their paycheque.

As for my remit, the board want to play possession football, which is fine as that's my general philosophy as well. The actual contract is more like the remainder of this season and the next two seasons; "three years" makes it sound more impressive than it really is.

AE Larisa 1964 2-0 Panathinaikos AO (Superleague)

Attendance: 5,340

I'm thrown in at the deep end, roaming the touchline before there's even been time to set up my introductory press conference.

My former Smartno striker Matevz Lenosek gets Larisa on the board late in the first half, and they add an insurance goal midway through the second.

Now I see why the team is hovering above the drop. Most of the squad is rated as 2 or 2-1/2 stars. Bulk of the first team just isn't good enough for a club of Panathinaikos' standard. I'm going to have do a major rebuild in the summer.

Panathinaikos AO 2-1 AEK Athens (Superleague)

Attendance: 36,960

A gutsy performance that ends with a smash-and-grab victory

Playing the 2nd place team was always going to be difficult. It was made more so when one of my midfielders got himself sent off on 6 minutes for throwing an elbow.

We finally went down after 70 minutes through one of the centre-backs missing a header, allowing an AEK forward to nip in for a goal.

But the other centre-back Elis Bektasi scored from a corner on 91 minutes, and two minutes later forward Emilijano Zenunay takes the ball from inside our own half down to the other end before scoring a powerful goal.

A bit of a fortunate win. Went behind earlier off a shot that seemed to take a slight deflection. Equalized late in the first half through a shot that deflected off a defender standing on the far post (credited as an own goal). Found the winner on 82 minutes when Pinto picked up a loose ball in the penalty area and managed to slot it past the keeper.

Panathinaikos win 3-1 on aggregate

Attendance: 58,633

A jammy draw. Edgar Salli got us on the board inside 5 minutes with a solo effort to effectively kill off the tie. But then we kept repeatedly turning the ball over and couldn't get any shots on target. AEK leveled the match midway through the first half. Our DM Giorgos Katidis got himself sent off in the 67th minute after 2 yellows in quick succession, but we were able to hang on.

If this match was a TV show it would be "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret." Some of the worst decision-making I've seen by a team in FM that culminates in central defender Souza making a soft pass out of our own area that's easily intercepted and buried past our keeper for the third goal.

Our closest pursuers Platanias win at AEK and close the gap to 1 point, but we still have a game in hand.

PAOK Salonika 0-1 Panathinaikos AO (Superleague)

Attendance: 28,701

Panathinaikos AO 2-2 AGS Asteras Tripolis (Superleague)

Attendance: 21,067

An even game in every sense of the word. Went into halftime 0-0, when I told my nervous forward "no pressure." He then bagged himself goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes. But then our Swiss centre-back has a calamitous effort at dealing with a high ball and a Tripolis forward comes racing in to punish the mistake in the 57th minute. That forward then seizes on another mistake in the 61st minute to equalise.

Lost our Dutch DM to a B.S. red card in the 88th minute but we held on for a draw.

Panionios 0-1 Panathinaikos AO (Superleague)

*PAOK and Asteras Tripolis have played 30 matches

So we're slowing pulling ourselves away from danger. Our final three matches are against Panthrakikos (home), Atromitos (away) and Larisa (home). Won't be an easy run-in, but it could be a lot harder and a win against any one of them should just about see us safe (although we would lose a tie-breaker against Platanias. Results between teams is the first tie-breaker in Greece, and we mustered only a draw and a loss against Platanias before my arrival)

I'm having trouble getting through to the players following a poorly received post-match team talk after the second leg draw against AEK. I cautiously told the players that the team didn't look very good (it didn't), and they immediately went all Greek leftist protester on me. Still, we're doing just enough to scrape up enough points.

We'll have to juggle the end of the league campaign with the semifinal of the Greek Cup. Playing Aris is a winnable tie, and certainly is easier than the other possibilities. The other semifinal is a top-of-the-table clash between Olympiakos and PAOK. If we beat Panthrakikos (or Platanias lose at home against Xanthi) and confirm survival, I might make the cup the primary target.

Couldn't hit the side of a barn for most of the game. It figured it would take a defensive error from Aris for us to make the breakthrough: Our right wing Reynaldo hits the post with a shot, an Aris defenders tries to head the loose ball, but only gets it as far as the penalty dish where our AMC Pablo Ceppelini pounces on it and drills his first goal of the season. But seriously, how are you playing in a cup semifinal, and you're complacent about it? Had one or two players looking that way. Er, it's not like we've strolled the league, fellas.

EASY. EASY. EASY. Took the lead on 1 minute, then smashed a penalty on 5 minutes. Made it 3-0 just after the 20-minute mark. A somewhat unfortunate own goal completed the rout for us. Not a bad way to finish off a frustrating season.

Attendance: 22,574

Nursing a 1-0 lead from the first leg, I played for counter attacks. We scored off a corner in the 7th minute to extend our aggregate lead to 2-0. A solid defensive effort ensured that our goalkeeper didn't have much to do except retrieve wayward blasts on goal (Aris took 11 shots, but forced our keeper to make only 1 save). So we're into the final, where we get PAOK Salonika, who are also dealing with the European Places Playoff.

As PAOK Salonika 1-2 Panathinaikos AO (Greek Cup Final/aet)

Attendance: 32,130

A tense, even encounter against the league runners-up, but we erase the pain of our Superleague campaign by lifting the cup. We went ahead early, but lost our right back to a gashed arm in the 30th minute. Our right wing also suffered a knock but was able to carry on. PAOK had us on the ropes in the middle of the second half and finally breached our defense in the 74th minute. I'd kept back 2 substitutions before burning them in extra time, but it was a switch from our 4-3-3 (4-5-1 in FM terminology) to the 4-2-3-1 that paid the biggest dividend, as Cepellini fed a lovely through ball for Emilijano Zenunay to run onto and slot into the back of the net on 96 minutes. A couple nervy moments near the end, but we run out winners.

So by winning the Greek Cup, we qualify for the Europa League, entering at the Playoff stage. I think part of the reason for the club's struggle this season is they reached the group stage of the Europa League, and the squad was just too small too fight on multiple fronts (our backup left back is one of the right backs, for example). We have one player retiring, and another leaving for Fiorentina, so I'll have to be busy this summer lining up reinforcements.

On a personal note, claiming the Greek Cup gives me two cups, and I'm now in FM's hall of fame for American managers.

Panathinaikos AO

2022-23 Season Preview // Greek Superleague // Europa League

Not the greatest of close seasons for us.

The board decided to cut the wage budget to $375,000/week, with a transfer budget of $2.23 million. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to cover to holdovers plus the two players coming in that were signed by the previous manager. So I had to shift about $400,000 of the transfer budget over to cover the excess wages.

And with no interest in some of our high earners, that means my planned rebuilding of the squad has had to be put on hold.

Hovering at the wrong end of the table last season hurt us financially. We got a new main kit sponsor, and an additional new kit sponsor, but those combined for a total of $3.45M, down from $4.22M. We're probably going to need a decent run in the Europa League to aid the finances. We're in decent shape at the moment ($2.65M in the bank), but the board projects a spendy season ending with us using our overdraft to the tune of $5.36M.

Apparently we're big in Iberia though, because we were invited to a 2-match tour of Portugal with games against Braga and Santa Clara. Not sure how much that helped, but it was something I haven't seen in FM.

Expectations

A mixed bag. People outside the club aren't convinced about us, with the media picking us for 8th, and the bookies setting us at 200-1. Considering we haven't been able to change much from the squad that finished 14th, the media and bookies might be closer to the mark.

Unfortunately for my job security, the board are expecting bigger things. They want us to qualify for the Europa League's group stage (which we have what appears to be a tricky tie against Hungarian side Haladas in the Playoff Round), and they want us to qualify for Europe through the league. That's going to be more difficult than in previous seasons, because Greece lost one of its two Champions League spots. We're next on the list to get a second team, but clearly the Greek sides are going to need to make a strong effort in Europe this season.

We're on the telly!

We're getting $3.78M from the Superleague's TV deal, plus another $500,000 from 10 of our matches being picked for live television.

Want that one!

We can scout the world. Unfortunately it doesn't do us much good, given that we're right up against the wage budget.

Greece

The Superleague is rated the 16th best competition in Europe, up from 27. We're back to a 3-star rating. We're rated one notch below the Championship in England, and just ahead of the Austrian Bundesliga.

As I said earlier, Greece has lost a Champions League spot though, so getting into Europe will be a bit tougher. We'll have to make the top 4 just to get into the European Places Playoff.

Elsewhere in Europe, the German Bundesliga is now the second rated competition, with La Liga dropping to 4th. La Liga are also 4th in the coefficient tables, so they send only 3 teams to the Champions League now. They're only a fraction of a point behind the Bundesliga though.

Changes to game setup

The game felt like it was dragging a bit after I'd added all the divisions in Scotland and Turkey, so I'm dropping Bulgaria and Norway.

Haladas FC 0-0 Panathinaikos AO (Europa League Playoff)

Attendance: 7,000

First competitive match of the season, away in Europe. Decided to keep things tight, and despite that we battered Haladas. The time of possession was pretty even, but we fired 24 shots, forcing Haladas' keeper into 10 saves. Were saved by the post late in the match, but otherwise unfortunate not to win.

August 19, 2022: Home leg against Haladas selected for TV coverage. We'll get about $30,000 for this.

August 21, 2022: Report season ticket sales of 11,640, down from 11,769

Sunday, August 21, 2022

AS PAOK Salonika 5-0 Panathinaikos AO (Superleague)

Attendance: 28,701

A miserable 49th birthday for me. A tight first half saw us go into halftime down 1-0 after a 40th minute goal. But the second half was a total collapse. The backline which looked solid in Europe was shredded by PAOK striker Vladimir Stolevski who put 4 goals in by himself.

Thursday, August 25, 2022

Panathinaikos AO 3-0 Haladas FC (Europa League Playoff)

Attendance: 47,760

Well after the PAOK disaster this was the sort of result we needed. Our centre-back Elis Bektasi scores twice inside of 5 minutes (can you tell we working on attacking set pieces in match training?), and Amiris Siakavaras, getting a rare start, seals the win with a breakaway on 81 minutes.

So we're into the Europa League group stage, and will get a cool $1.8M just for being there.

August 26, 2022: Panathanaikos drawn in Europa League Group J, alongside PSV (HOL), Newcastle United (ENG) and Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL). Group matches begin September 15, 2022.

August 28, 2022: Captain Samir Jaouhari declares he wants a new challenge. I tell him I'll try to find a new club for him as soon as possible. He is currently on a $31,000/week contract that expires at the end of the season. Age 26, rated at 3 stars. A bit slow, the coaching staff rates him as only our third best centre-back. I'm just happy he didn't wait until deadline day to do this.

Sunday, August 28, 2022

Panathinaikos AO 3-3 GSS Panionios (Superleague)

Attendance: 26,040

Took the lead in the 19th minute through, only to concede an equaliser from a free kick a few moments later. Panionios then went in front just before halftime and added the third not long after. I dialed up the attacking, and we manage to claw back a draw.

More worrisome is my assistant reporting that several of the players are having trouble motivating themselves to play for me. This may not end well.

Panathinaikos summer transfer window

IN

ST/AML - Mushaga Bakenga (Free, Leeds, ENG)

The 30-year-old Norwegian was signed by the previous manager.

DM/MC - Giannis Papadopoulous (Free, St. Etienne, FRA)

The 2-star 33-year-old Greek international was signed by the previous manager.

DRC/DL - Laninho (Loan, Cortiba, BRA)

The 21-year-old Brazilian is a natural right back, but I was looking for someone who was "correct" footed to play left back (our other options were right-footed). The kid is 6'7" and perhaps not surprising for a Brazilian is comfortable with either foot.

ST/AML - Hector Rivera (Free)

Rated as 3-1/2 stars by our scouts, the 20-year-old Mexican came up in the Queretaro system but was not re-signed.

Signs for $4,000/week through 2025-26 season, plus 5% wage rise, $1,000 goal bonus, $3,000 appearance fee.

ST/AMC - Carlos Caceres (Loan, Boca Juniors, ARG)

Rated at 4-1/2 stars by our scouts, the 21-year-old Argentine has great off the ball movement. He's considered best as a poacher, but I'll probably be playing him in the hole. Valued at $3.3M, he's out of our price range, but we can easily fit his $10,000/week wages under our budget with Evers gone.

OUT

DC/DR/DM - Ties Evers ($1.5M, Nottingham Forest, ENG)

Age 31, was one of the players looking complacent in early matches. So hit the bricks, fella. Frees up $39,000/week. De Graafschap get 5% as a solidarity contribution. Supporters disappointed, but I'm not going to have players who are swanning about on the pitch.

ST/AML - Charalabos Karamoulas (Free, Giannina, GRE)

A backup player who was deemed surplus to requirements.

MC/DM - Giorgos Katidis (Free, Fiorentina, ITA)

The Fans Player of the Year had already lined up a 1-year move to Serie A by the time I arrived at the club.

MC - Christopher Schiller (Loan, Larissa, GRE)

19-year-old prospect. I felt he'd be better served with some match experience

DC - Dina Vargic (Loan, Osijek, CRO)

The 20-year-old Croatian goes back to his home country, to one of our affiliates.

DC - Savvas Kolonis (Loan, Fostiras, GRE)

19-year-old goes down to our affiliate in the National C Division. Another 6'7" beast. Handled the National B Division well last season, but he's going to the level below this season. Not thrilled about it, but I figure it's better than U20 games.

TOP DEALS

Greece: $5.25M - DL - Jonas Henrique from Olympiakos to Atromitos (regen player)

World: $61M - MC Andres Cano from Getafe to Man United (regen player)

Unfortunately couldn't get a deal done to ship out Jaouhari. So we're stuck with him.

Also had a couple of permanent transfer bids for quality AMCs turned down before we turned our attention to Caceres. It was a successful window though in the sense that we freed up some wage space, and at least got one Billy Big Time out of the changing room.

September 2, 2022: CSKA Moscow trigger defender Elis Bektasi's $7.5M release clause. (Valued at $10.25M, but I had to give him $7.5M to get him to a sign a new deal that had a miniscule pay rise)

He decides to go. Frees up $32,000/week.

Larisa get $1.5M of the fee due to 20% sell-on clause.

Takes transfer budget to $7.3M

Saturday, September 10, 2022

Olympiakos SF Piraeus 3-1 Panathinaikos AO (Superleague)

Attendance: 32,130

A poor result as we were generally played off the park. Conceded a penalty inside 5 minutes, then on 12 minutes our goalkeeper lets one through that he should have saved. That pretty well finished it.

The body language of the players remains poor, with one showing "struggling to motivate himself" to play for our captain, and two likewise for me. Hey, you're all making at least $30,000/week. That ought to be motivation enough.

Thursday, September 15, 2022

Ludogorets 1945 (Razgrad) 2-1 Panathinaikos AO (Europa League Group J)

Attendance: 6,431

Another poor performance. Fell behind after 9 minutes and conceded another in the 31st. Pulled one back in the 71st, but that was it.

More worrisome, right wing Edgar Salli "looking uninterested" in a Europa League game, when he's talking about leaving on a Bosman. Who are you to be "uninterested" in the Europa League, Harry Redknapp?

Time to drop the hammer, I think, and drop all the Big Time Charlies.

Sunday, September 18, 2022

Panathinaikos AO 0-1 Iraklis Salonika 1908 (Superleague)

Another defeat, but at least we actually showed some fight this time after I dropped some of the underachieving players. Iraklis' goal came from a scramble in front off a corner. But it's another defeat, and if I'm honest, I'm already starting to eye the exit.

Wednesday, September 21, 2022

And there's the escape hatch. Portland Timbers sack their manager. "One source cited a series of bad transfers" as the reason for it.

I quickly resign from Panathinaikos and apply for the job.

Friday, September 23, 2022

Portland approach Yank

Portland Timbers Chairman Tom Lines has offered you a three year contract on $8.25K per week to take the managerial job at Portland Stadium.

The board will not be judging the team's performances in the MLS this season. Following Portland's heavy 0-3 Major League Soccer Regular Season defeat against Chivas USA last Wednesday, McAuley's side are currently 9th in the MLS West Conf. with 22 points from 32 matches. Potland have lost four of their last five games in the league.

Allocation Funds: $0

Salary Cap Budget: $84K per week

Current Player Wage Total: $65.92K per week

180px-PortlandTimbersMLSLogo.png

So, I'm heading to the Pacific Northwest, to a place "where young people go to retire."

The club have won the MLS title in 2015 and 2020, but obviously are doing abysmally this season. With two games left in their season (at Vancouver and at Toronto), they're all but guaranteed to claim the wooden spoon.

Currently, Next Big Thing Freddy Adu is the Portland captain, but has already agreed to join Portuguese side Academica.

The team are mired in a 9-match winless run, picking up just 1 point in that stretch. They've grabbed just 5 points from an available 45 since the start of July.

Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 Portland Timbers (MLS)

Attendance: 20,707

Under the gun all game to our Cascadia rivals. Threw a 20-year-old 4-star potential goalkeeper into what proved to be a shooting gallery.

Team still getting to grips with the new tactics, but attack looks like it'll be my priority in the off-season.

Saturday, October 8, 2022

Toronto FC 1-0 Portland Timbers (MLS)

Attendance: 20,888

A pretty even game until the defense falls asleep on an 80th minute cross. And even then our two centre-backs each averaged at least an 8.0 rating. Attack is definitely where we need improvement.

Major League Soccer - Regular Season FINAL
EAST WEST
1. New England	68	1. Los Angeles	63
2. Philadelphia	60	2. San Jose	60
3. Columbus	55	3. Chivas USA	52
4. Toronto	54	4. Vancouver	50
5. Houston	46	5. Seattle	45
------------------	------------------
6. New York	45	6. Colorado	42
7. Chicago	43	7. Dallas	40
8. Montreal	42	8. Salt Lake	35
9. DC United	34	9. PORTLAND	22
10.Kansas City	28

Wild Card round
Toronto 1-0 Houston	Vancouver 2-0 Seattle

Conference semifinal round (2-leg aggregate)
Toronto 0-3 New England	Vancouver 1-2 Los Angeles
Columbus 3-4 Phila.	Chivas USA 3-8 San Jose

Conference final round (2-leg aggregate)
Phila. 5-1 New England	San Jose 3-3p Los Angeles

MLS Cup
Los Angeles 1-2 Philadelphia

So the wooden spoon goes to us. Everything here needs work. We finish last in the league with a putrid 20 goals in 34 games. We tie for last in the league with 55 goals against. And we're twice as bad as anybody in the league with a -35 goal difference (the next worst is Kansas City at -18)

Missing the playoffs means we qualify for the "You Suck" allocation of $350,000.

Finishing last means we *should* get the #1 pick...if only the previous regime hadn't traded all our SuperDraft picks. They also traded our first pick in the 2024 SuperDraft.

Good luck in the MLS, it always interests me reading about saves in America.

Thanks. You'll be pleased to note that Philadelphia have just won back-to-back titles. :D

Pity you couldn't stay and do more in Greece.
I echo what delta says, with a bit better luck Panathinaikos could have been a good 5-6 year stay. Wasn't to be though and good luck with Portland

Too many Big Time Charlies from the looks of it. My replacement isn't doing much better with them.

Good luck with the Timbers Jason. Any MLS bugs you see in your save?

Nothing yet, but still early days.

Looks like teams still quick to sack. New England's manager got fired after finishing first in the East but bombing out in the playoffs.
