Maybe infractions shouldn't be done on a case-to-case basis

Recommended Posts

Okay, with Nomis and CaptainPlanet getting banned recently I can not help but notice that there seems to be a lack of consistancy on these forums with infractions. I think the two bannings were harsh considering the amount of time over the last few days these boards have been completely spammed up with utter rubbish. My point is, maybe there should be a rule book and if someone clearly breaks the rules, they get an infraction rather than doing it case-by-case.

Thanks for reading and I presume this will get closed.

Nomis's ban was at his own request. Although he did get one before that for posting rubbish.

We all know there's a bizarre inconsistenty when it comes to infractions and warnings, and no protest will ever be heard. I just try to steer a course as best I can.

Didnt Nomis ask to be banned for a break? Im sure i've read that somewhere. To be honest i need to calm down sometimes, im suprprised i havn't been infracted!

My bonus scheme at work is done on a case to case basis and, similar to infractions, can lack concsistency. A solution that we found was writing out what we could lose our bonus for and for how long etc. Perhaps something similar could be done for infractions? Or if it has been done then making it a sticky or something? Just an idea anyway.

I agree and and I disagree with you there Peter. Some of the infractions received by people recently have been harsh considering the things that people havent been infracted for. The constant spamming by certain people who dont recieve infractions is becoming increasingly frustraiting when you compare it to some things that people have been infracted for.

It seems to me that some moderators are more willing to infract regular users of the forum who they have decided should know better than a new user who repeatedly asks the same question or spam consistently about the patch despite repeated warning by moderators and SI staff.

This will probably be closed soon, I hope it isnt though as this further proves the case of inconsistent moderation. A similar thread ran for 4 pages in another forum and we will be lucky to get 10 posts.

On the subject of modding (and editing in that I just saw the post posted before mine >_>), would I be right in saying it's punishable to censor your own swear words (with stars ****)? I've been getting the impression that it is. No swearing is an understandable rule even though the 'age limit' of the internet is 13+, but no non-swearing?

I agree with that completely Huw, I suppose this will be closed but I didn't have anywhere else to bring it up and it was frustrating me a wee bit.

I think starring out swear words still counts as swearing, i believe its like that anyway, correct me if im wrong. It is ironic that swearing is banned on here (fair play) yet we are all only a few clicks away from things like death videos and hardcore porn etc.

It's still swearing though, everyone knows that **** is a swearword, so it is just as bad.

Fwiw, I think that infractions are a bit inconsistent.

CaptainPlanet got one for an obvious joke, and light hearted fun. It's not his fault that some people are pathetically gullable.

Then, in the same thread, there was a lot of spamming and text talk. None of this was even punished.

Don't get me started on LLM, I'll never stop.

The other option would mean that people would still be given harsh infractions, but because there'd be a lack of common sense rather than inconsistency. You can't win either way tbh.

Not sure why CP was banned btw, so I can't say anything about him specifically.

I wish more people were banned/infracted for spamming and text talk.

Dafuge :D gave me a warning for text talk when I first joined when I used it in one word by accident and when people use it consistently for hundreds of posts, they don't even get warned.

30 infraction points.

RickRolling, The patch joke and the bump of the 8.0.2 thread. Ridiculous when I write it out.

RickRolling, although funny, should be a lifetime ban! As someone who was old enough to be around when it first came out it is something i would rather forget ;)

Exacly what I mean by inconsistancy.

But the whole point is that it's censored. Swear words themselves are just words but if they are replaced with stars that is all we see. We are spared the horrific sight of three consonants and a vowel in a particular order.

Erm... why put that in bold? You could get another warning for misuse of forum software;):D

That is the problem IMO, the inconsistency. It's all well and good to have rules on here, but when people blatantly flout them and just get a "Stop it you naughty boy" or not even that, then it is hardly going to act as a deterrent is it?

So do you think it would be alright to post porn up here with private parts blacked out? No.

Same goes for swearing.

Did't say it did weres your moderator badge like.wined ya kneck in

You wind yours in mate. All you have done in this thread is spout irrelevant crap about being a tester, it bears not relevance to the point in hand and, quite honestly, no one cares that you think you are better than everyone else because of it

I don't see the connection between porn and swearing. With stars all you see is stars, with censored porn you see two (or more) people doing sex acts with a few black spots or blurry bits.

Tbf, the OTF thing would've been a bit harsh to give a longer ban than that, considering that kind of thing has been allowed for so long in there. A one week ban does the job, it makes it clear that that kind of comment is no longer acceptable on the forum.

CaptainPlanet's ban is just ridiculous imo, whichever way you look at it.

the way i look at mods is, what are they getting out of it other than an impotent woft of power?

im always highly suspicious of that sort of mind set

Fgs, what a pathetic comment. Not thought anyone might just want to help a company that make a game they enjoy?

Or is everything you do just for you?

The mods do a good job given that they're all volunteers giving up their free time to do the job.

The only way to achieve total consistency is to bring in incredibly strict rules. We'd rather run a slightly relaxed forum where people have the opportunity to use their common sense than do this. It's perfectly reasonable to expect experienced users to know what they can and can't get away with slightly more clearly than new users, and I'm yet to see an unfair infraction on the boards - including the examples listed above. Peter, both of the ones you referenced were discussed before any action was taken - they were not the work of a single mod in a bad mood...;)

If you have a problem with any mod actions you can either report posts or you can mail them for a review. There's no requirement to discuss their actions here.

Thanks

Matt

Can people please try and avoid from pointless bickering in this thread please?

Peter has tried to start a constructive debate and we hope to continue in that vain not with arguing and bickering which are far to prevelant between some users on this forum:thdn:

Sorry Huw, got a little carried away there

Back on topic: IMO there need to be better guidelines set out so that infractions are not seemingly randomly handed out. And if there are such guidelines as these already in place, then the mods need to adhere to them a lot better than they are at the moment
