The defeat against Nancy looks bad, (and was), but can be explained away at least to a certain extent by the fact that 2 of the goals were conceded as a result of my GK losing possession upfield, and then we gifted them another when out defender and GK got into a mix-up and then gifted them a third.

Goal 2. That's a looooong way upfield and there is nobody in our half at all.

ca0aef159be5281d29db8d65f24361ba.png

Goal 3. They have won the header from the GK free-kick but now the GK needs to run as fast as he can back to the goal and the defenders need to do everything they can to put pressure on the ball. instead, 1 single defender closes the ball and forces the player wide, while the GK joins the defensive line and retreats in line with his defenders rather than trying to get back in goal. Idiot, (but it's a price I pay for having my GK's core so many goals).

The up-side of GK's getting involved in attacking play. Oct 2039.

As annoying as conceding those 2 goal in the last match was, I long ago accepted that we would continue to concede goals like that and this following clip is why I do it.

Go on the (36c) Schmidt (Bal) * Love the celebration son!

4 wins out of 5 in the league has fired us into the Playoff positions, and interestingly it was done largely with the 442 tactic. We beat Lille with our nomal 433 tactic, but Le Mans were bottom of the table, (how we have an affiliate in the same league as us is perhaps a question for another time), so I opted to play 2 up front. It worked well and we scored 5, and then we went on to beat Ligue 1 side Toulouse, (they are 9th in Ligue 1), in the Cup.

The 442 tactic is ok and has worked well for us this month, but even before the Red Star game I was itching to revert to 3 in the middle.

(39b) Xabier (Res) * has been in decent form, but he is often played wide right rather than up front.

5ca973b4d7f0665329507f985004ba4d.png

(39a) Jesús (Fickle) (2039) * might have come through the 2039 intake ahead of (39b) Xabier (Res) *, (and he is still rated above him by PA), but he has already turned 16 so has been eligible for competitive League games. He has made his First Team debut already, but most of his games have been for the Reserves.

d4d7e08a2fc23833d03738cd652fb366.png

(36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) * has been doing ok for us, but I think there is more to come.

bdb18fcd72f4956f3df48db1cffe2b8e.png

The real surprise however has been (26b) Rio. (F.Pro) * who has scored 8 goals in 9(2) league games from midfield. He's a pretty average player and I've almost let him leave on a free twice, but now I'm hoping to get him score a few more goals and then flog him in January.

I can't complain about a 2nd consecutive unbeaten month, but it could and probably should have been even better. Where as I would usually have been happy with a draw away to top of the table Lorient, but we led 2-0 at HT and the levelling goal was scored by none other than Miguel González (BAS) (Bal) who is playing well for them,

Where as we played 433 wide against Lorient, I reverted to 442 against Monaco Reserves. It would seem to suggest that the choice of tactics didn't work, but we actually hit the woodwork on 3 occasions so in line with my usual mantra of concentrating on the long-term plan rather than individual results I will continue as is.

8d7e21a43fc91bde119e0119aac1209e.png

Miguel González (BAS) (Bal) is on loan at FC Lorient. Although they are paying all his wages and an additional fee equal to his wages, it would seem to be money well spent at the moment.

1895f071680e22e9973d90b821252ff0.png

He's obviously in good form at the moment, but it's interesting to see how they have been using him since he was ok if unspectacular for us. Certainly nothing like this kind of form.

7e92adaa5a1e4f047544177ab42a0a02.png

PF and AF are fine, but I never use a Treq and I don't know why.

abb13e48628179f801d88586a8155cfe.png

When I play with 1 up front then the plan moving forward is to have (39a) Jesús (Fickle) (2039) * playing at IF(a) and cutting in from the left to exploit the half spaces. Maybe I could experiment with the right sided striker playing a Treq role?

dcfa278bdd732c3240af02b7a0ead570.png

I also have a CM(a) attacking centrally, (and to great effect).

17f97a8f7fa41129daa85c865a5a87a2.png

Even without changing to a Treq role up front though, I wonder if concentrating on playing down the left and getting the full-back high up the field, (possibly looking at a WB role), would really give us an advantage. Forget the impact of the IF and WB roles on their own for a minute and imagine the space that would be created more centrally by trying to defend against them?

(39b) Xabier (Res) * watch Dec 2039.

When the U19's play 442 he plays wide right, but plays through the middle when they play 1 up front and obviously scores more goals as a result.

He's also really found his feet, (and his shooting boots), for France U19's.

We crashed out of the League Cup to Ligue 1 Monaco, but then dropped 3 league points away to PSG Reserves

It leaves us just outside the Playoffs and a whole 10 points behind leaders Sochaux and 7 points behind 2nd placed Lorient. We're not losing very often, but if we want to go up we need to turn some of these draws into wins.

(39b) Xabier (Res) * is now 0.5 stars better than everyone else at the club and he's still too young to play for us. I also note that his PA has popped to a guaranteed 4.5. A benefit of having the quality of our best players increasing is that it makes it easier to judge the PA of other players at the club, (because that's what they are being rated against.

I don't know what to do. Jan 2040.

£10M is a lot of money when the most you have ever sold a player for is £3M and you are £1.3M overdrawn at the bank.

Sochaux are top of Ligue 2 and because of the stature of the club, there is every chance that he will go on to make 50 appearances so the fee could rise to almost £12M. That's a LOT of money. Then we also get 40% of any profit made when they sell him. Thinking about it though, I doubt he will go on to be sold for more than £11.9M so that's worth about as much as the £1.9M we get if he plays 10 times for France. (Not a chance).

b61700bb7bedea048fd51a5a755a0ee9.png

I obviously have the option to protest this transfer, but while my initial reaction was "of course I want to protest it", I'm having second thoughts.

(39b) Xabier (Res) * isn't eligible yet for competitive games, but I think he is eligible for the last 4 meaning that I only have to get through 13 games without either him or (36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) * and of course I have both Reta (ESP) (BAS) (F.Det) and (29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) * to play between now and then.

Reta (ESP) (BAS) (F.Det).

fa73015477d32ce9b44469fb75de361a.png

(29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) *.

45f99946132bc458fba9c8638135af7d.png

On the one hand, if I sell (36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) * then that will sort us financially for a while so that when PSG and whoever come back in for (39b) Xabier (Res) * then the board are less likely to feel that they need to cash in on him.

On the other hand, I could sell (36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) * and then PSG or someone else comes in with such a big offer for (39b) Xabier (Res) * that it would be silly not to sell. (I don't mean silly money, but even £15M-£20M would be enormous money for us at the moment. Then we would have neither of them.

Something else that bothers me is that while (39b) Xabier (Res) * has signed a pre-contract deal which means he is tied up already before his 16th birthday, I can't remember how long the pre-contract deal was for and I know that +year options don't work when the player signs them on before their 16th birthday. So it's possible that we might only have him signed for 2 years meaning that I would have to flog him after 1.

Right now I want to negotiate the current offer, but I can't because the board have already accepted it meaning I can only let it go through or protest it. If I could swap the 40% profit for 40% re-sale, and add in a few million spread over 20 league games or something, then I think that would be enough to accept. I really don't know what to do......

The other thing I could do is recall Miguel González (BAS) (Bal) from FC Orient. They are 2nd in Ligue 2 and to be honest I might just do it to hurt them even though it's financially good for us.

Protest. Jan 2040.

So I've decided to protest the transfer. There are 2 Ligue 1 clubs interested in (36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) * too, (Rennes and someone else), so my plan is to get this refused and then I have upped his asking price from £12.5M to £15M. If I can get that sort of money for him then I will accept myself, (and hopefully by then he will have played another couple of league games and we will be just a little bit close to (39b) Xabier (Res) * becoming available.

The only problem now is that I'm not sure what option to use when protesting.

20f62062c704154611e3219360fe96ee.png

It's definitely not the "really good prospect" at the bottom, but I'm torn between "weakened by his loss" at the top or "damage the squad's morale & level of quality" in the middle.

I had sort of decided initially on the middle option, but I know that the top option was successful for this player before so I'm torn.......

If the board were expecting us to challenge for the title or promotion/playoffs, then I think I would go for option 2, but as it is they are just expecting a top half finish I think, so I don't think the middle option suits. No, I think I'm going to go for the top option again for this player.

74835b6c103651452148e83ac7a6a67b.png

It's great that it worked, but now I have to ensure that we don't lose (39b) Xabier (Res) * instead.

Jan & Feb 2040. (and 1st game of March. Sorry).

1e32d08f7e8cd55086e1dbd9315b9b51.png

Jan looks a rubbish Month at 1st glance, but Lorient and Saint Etienne are both flying high near the top of the table and in contention for the Playoffs themselves. We played both games away, led in both games, and lost each by a single goal.

Feb was a much better month with maximum points from our 3 home games and a draw away to AC Ajaccio

We are only 1 game into March, but already things are looking decent with 3 huge points away to 2nd placed Nancy

(39b) Xabier (Res) * has slowed down a little in terms of his scoring and there have even been 2 whole games recently where he played as a striker and didn't score.

Youth Day. Mar 2040.

I really want a decent centre-half. If I'm greedy I want two decent centre-backs, but I will settle with one. Please please please give me a centre-back.

Well I'm not sure yet of we have any good centre-backs, but we have a Zubizarreta and 2 Bengoetxea's, If those famous names are anything to go by then we will have done ok, (although my scouts tell me that picking players based on their names is not the way forward even in the Grand National never mind about football).

176964bd78efc1c0b6e0d34f4713541f.png

What do I say about having 1x 5.0 PA player? Well we have 2 and there is a 4.5 and a couple of 4.0 players too.

In terms of centre-backs, (40g) Barrenetxea (Merc) is the highest rated centre-back and while he's not so rubbish that he's not getting a contract, he's not great either.

Unfortunately (40g) Barrenetxea (Merc) and (40p) Bengoetxea. (Amb) are not related. (Gutted).

(40l) Zubizarreta. (L.Det) is also a GK. (Love that).

923ea12a82a33ab83d7f6742f513426f.png

There are quite a few players that I am releasing immediately and not even offering youth contracts to.

(40h) Jan. (Unamb), (40j) Telletxea. (Unamb), (40k) García. (Unamb), (40l) Zubizarreta. (L.Det), (40m) Bengoetxea. (Unamb) and (40o) Guichard. (Bal) have all been released either because their PA rating appeared low, their (Det) rating was low, or because their attribute balance seemed low, (not their balance attribute by the way), or a mixture of all 3.

The next thing that strikes me is that it is the second year running where the best player rated by PA is a left winger. Last year we had (39a) Jesús (Fickle) (2039) * who has already made quite an impact since his 16th birthday. He's scored and assisted for for the First Team in the League, for the First Team in the Cup, and is almost at double-figure goals for the Reserves in National 2-B so has really hit the ground running. While both (39a) Jesús (Fickle) (2039) * and (40a) Ruiz (F.Det) (2040) * play on the left flank, the former is an IF and the latter is a W, so they are not exactly like for like players. They each offer different options which is a bit of a result.

9adcf7cbf6849a38a3dc4d7769edb46c.png

(40a) Ruiz (F.Det) (2040) *

He's very much a natural wide player rather than someone who will cut in, but his finishing still needs some work. Vision is also low for someone trying "killer balls often". Passing is almost in double figures at the outset though so that's not too shabby. I like him, but he may take slightly longer than (39a) Jesús (Fickle) (2039) * to make an impact on the First team.

f2e2b9b793441a0b0aaffa8ad99143b0.png

(40b) Reta (Bal) *.

This time a right winger, at 1st glance he doesn't stack up well at all against (40a) Ruiz (F.Det) (2040) * so I'm not sure how they are each rated 1.5 CA. I suppose the reality is that the 1.5 CA level covers quite a range of abilities. I'm not as excited about him though, and he's certainly not the centre-half that I was really looking for. We have to just deal with what we are given though. I'm seriously thinking that when one of our strikers gets sold, (and they will get sold), I'm going to have a shortlist of Basque centre-halves ready to go out and buy, even if we have to spend some proper cash on them. I'm talking players who will immediately come in and start. I'm not talking about potenbtial

Six players called up for International Duty. Mar 2040.

The reason I mention how many players were called up on this occasion is that I think 6 is a new record.

(36e) Koldo (Det) * becomes our 1st player to be called up to FRA U21's.

78800516017e1163143cc88e04770ceb.png

I'm quite glad that (39b) Xabier (Res) * has been left in the (FRA) U19's squad rather than potentially moving up into the U20's or U21's. There will be plenty of time for that once he has made his senior debut.

With regards to the class of 2038, who have so far not received any call-ups, I don't think it will be too long. (38a) Teo Guerin (Bal) (2038)* is a decent GK with what looks like great potential. I think I will start giving him a chance in the Reserves and if either he or (23e) Bouchez. (F.Det) * concede a goal then they will get dropped. If they keep a clean sheet then they will keep their place. (38b) Jorge Martínez (F.Amb) has already made an impact on the Reserves this season and (38i) Álex Goiria (Spirit) was rated quite lowly when he came through the intake but looks like he has more potential than initially thought.

(34b) Mikel Ochoa (Bal) *. 2 appearances for (FRA) U20's. 3 appearances for (FRA) U19's.

(35a) Iker (Bal) (2035) *. 8 appearances for (FRA) U20's including 1 assist. 11 appearances for (FRA) U19's including 5 assists and 1 goal.
(35b) Renault (Temp) *. 6 appearance for (FRA) U20's. 2 appearances for (FRA) U19's including 1 assist.

(36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) *. 4 appearances for (FRA) U19's including 1 goal.
(36b) Borja (F.Amb) *. 5 appearance for (FRA) U20's including 1 goal. 4 appearances for (FRA) U19's.
(36c) Schmidt (F.Loyal) *. 4 appearances for (FRA) U20's including 1 assist. 5 appearances for (FRA) U19's
(36e) Koldo (Det) *. 4 appearances for (FRA) U20's including 2 goals. 16 appearances for (FRA) U19's, including 2 assists.

(37a) Théo (F.Amb) (2037) *. 1 appearance for (FRA) U20's. 1 appearance for (FRA) U19's.

There have been no International call-ups for the 2038 intake so far, but there is still time for them.

(39b) Xabier (Res) *. 6 appearances for (FRA) U19's including 7 goals and 1 assist.

3 wins from 3 games has pushed us up to 3rd now and we are just 3 points behind Nancy and an automatic promotion spot. It's a little concerning though that of the 5 goals we scored this month, none of them were scored by strikers. (Although that could be seen as a strength too).

With that in mind though, (39b) Xabier (Res) * turns 16 on 14th April so he should be available for 2 of 5 league games in April and then the 3 in May. After a slight lean spell in front of goal, he has now broken the 30 goal barrier for the season and this includes 19 in the U19's League. He has also continued his goal-scoring exploits for the (FRA) U19's side. I had decided that I was going to play 2 up front when he became available, but now because we have a chance of automatic promotion I'm torn. I have been playing 2 up front in some games, but usually only against poorer opposition when we are at home.

Why he was played on the right hand side against Denmark I have no idea.

 Confusion. Apr 2040.

(39b) Xabier (Res) * has turned 16 and I was expecting him to be eligible for League games, but unfortunately although he is old enough now, he hasn't been registered. Where as I was able to register (39a) Jesús (Fickle) (2039) * on his birthday and play him in the next game, I am unable to do that now because the registration window is closed.

Don't ask me why I didn't think about that, but I didn't. :idiot:

Injury. May 2040.

We are almost at the end of the season, (1 league game of the season remaining), and (39b) Xabier (Res) * has just been injured with a broken wrist. Usually I would just send him to the specialist because let's be honest, he can't even play in any competitive games until next season. but I'm curious as to the effects of asking him to play through the injury with protective equipment, (so that's what I'm going to do).

I wonder about it affecting either his bravery or his determination, (or both), and this is the best way to check.

6e072cf814fcecfbd1f6fe990844ff33.png

This is what he looks like now with Determination of 13 and Bravery of 10.

After I have asked him to play through the injury, the only difference is that he has a down arrow on his pace attribute. When I check his attribute changes it shows that his pace has dropped from 13.6 last month to 13.4 this month. This could be related to the injury, (but more likely the protective equipment), or a complete coincidence.

One thing is for sure though, it doesn't hinder his ability to stick the ball in the back of the net.

He's just smashed 6 goals in 65 minutes in what is likely to be his last game for our U19's.

23869a20e99a68d3751eb36127b4fe31.png

Oh no. I've just realised that the 6 goals were scored in a friendly rather than an U19 league game. That's such a shame. :(

Apr & May 2040.

The loss against Sochaux was our only defeat in the final 4 months of the season. Thankfully, even had we beaten them, we would have still finished Runners Up without picking up more points elsewhere so I am not as upset as I might be. They are worthy champions and I am more than happy finishing as Runners Up.

We will have a 2nd pop at Ligue 1 football next season and the money is well needed and should allow us to attract a better quality of player, especially at centre-half where we just are not producing players of the required quality through the Academy.

End of Season Summary. May 2040.

League Table. I've got to be happy with a Runners Up spot. The aim was promotion, (albeit as Champions), but at least we have gone up.

League Graph. You can see that we were never top and Sochaux are deserved Champions. Absolutely no complaints from me.

Reserves Table. I would like to go unbeaten at this level going forward. Next season might be too early for this but it's certainly a short to medium term goal.

U18's Table. How we didn't win this title I have absolutely now idea. We lost 1 game all season, (to Nantes while they lost 3), but we also drew 6 games, gifting them the tile on the basis on a better head to head record.

I'm starting to get a little concerned if I'm honest.

I've just signed our 19 yo 1st choice GK (36c) Schmidt (Bal) * to a new 5 year deal, (with no add-ons), and I had to pay him £20,000 per week.  Don't get me wrong, it's money well spent I think, but there is absolutely no doubt that we have some tough times ahead over the next few years between now where most of our talent is PA based rather than CA based, and the reality is that clubs don't pay anywhere near for PA what they pay for CA. (36c) Schmidt (Bal) * is currently on £4,400 per week and I would say that's a lot of a 19 yo GK, but he is a 19 yo  GK who has 110 appearances to his name, has played 2 seasons in in Ligue 1 and has represented France at U19's and U20's level. That he has just signed a £20,000 per week deal seems a stratospheric jump and the reality is that the only way I will be able to fund this is by selling players. The problem with this is that the most I have ever received as a transfer fee is £3M with £1.6M the only other fee above about £550,000.

These figures probably don't mean a lot to those of you who manage a lower league club or who manage in the Premier league, but they are more than a little scary here in France and I'm a little surprised by how tight things are going to be financially. They are so tight that a Youth Only save might not be sustainable in terms of challenging at the top of Ligue 1, (although I appreciate that there are many definitions of success in a save like this).

To try and put these sorts of numbers into some perspective, (36c) Schmidt (Bal) * is valued at £5M, but we are going to be paying him £5.2M over the next 5 years. When we are already leaking money like a sieve while paying him £4,400 per week, this is seriously concerning. I was particularly concerned when I saw that we were only able to make a loss of about £4.4M over 3 or 4 years I think to avoid being banned from European competition, (although I think the Board were able to invest about £22M over that period without censure).

d45556826b678b515961129af1f536a5.png

Anyone reading this thread regularly will be aware that there has already been significant interest in some of our players and in particular we had big bids in for (36a) Dulce (Bal) (2036) * who is now valued at £6M at the age of 19. My plan is to start him at the beginning of the season, (and let (39b) Xabier (Res) * find his feet in the Reserves and from the bench as I expect to be playing with just 1 striker a lot of the time). This will hopefully generate some interest in him and I will happily sell him for a fee of between £7.5M - £10M plus some juicy add-ons. The reality is that I expect to have to sell 1 player per season like this, (at least), but also hope to benefit from some big add-one at a later date. We are paying just over £4M per year to fund our Youth setup, and while that's all well and good, when we get to these sorts of levels and I want to upgrade the facilities still more, I need the Academy to pay for this itself. With a total transfer income of £7M over 21 seasons, (and 2 different transfers amounting for £4.6M of this), it's clear that we need to generate more income via selling players. It's got to be the right deal at the right time though and I'm reluctant to let our best players leave before they have even featured for us. I would much prefer to keep them for their formative years, get some on-pitch benefit from them and THEN sell them for a healthy profit. It's easier said than done though and I may well be forced to sell earlier than I want in the short-term in order to build a sound financial base. In particular you might recall that the best player in each intake over the last 2 intakes has been a left winger, and that there was also a 3rd good left winger that came through too. It would be silly not to look to sell at least one of these, but it's got to be the right player at the right time.

Bid received. Jun 2040.

What perfect timing. :applause:

The very player that I choose to mention is the subject of a bid from Liverpool almost immediately. I have an asking price of £10M set and have asked the board to refuse offers equal to or below that level. (Whether or not they are capable of declining a £10M bid is quite another thing). Chelsea and Atletico Pamplona are also interested.

Looking more at this deal it's £4.5M up front plus £2M over 12 months brings us to £6.5M and then £3.25M over 10 league games brings us to £9.75M plus £1.6M after 10 league games brings us to £11.1M and then £1.6M after just 1 INT appearance, (not sure that's very likely but you never know), brings us to £12.7M before we consider the 40% of re-sale value.

Surprise. Jun 2040.

I've got to admit that I'm surprised that this offer wasn't accepted. I know I have a £10M asking price set and they have met it, but I am astounded that the board allowed the offer to be rejected. I am immediately upping the valuation to £15M to see what we can get.

[Edit]

Bidding war anyone?

I don't mind selling him if we can loan him back for at least 1 season, but we will go down without him in the team so I have to balance that against any income.

Well done on promotion, I'm looking forward to seeing how you fare in Ligue 1 this time, and seeing if Xabier can make the step up to senior football.

If you are able to get over £10m for Schmidt as well as loan him back for a season that would be a very good deal

There are some big bids, (relative to our size coming in).

English and Italian clubs have bid £10M for (36b) Borja (F.Amb) *, (I had his asking price set to £10M), but I have just upped it to £20M but will take £10M+ and a decent % sell-on fee as well as a friendly. He has asked to go on the transfer list but has 4 years left on his contract so I'm in no rush.

38f5ad9275aa9e2701753ec890b224fb.png

Italian clubs have offered £10M for (35b) Renault (Temp) *, but although his is a natural full back, he is actually our best centre-half so I am not overly keen to sell.

c3d90b441c8dee9f5f7f9244157b6880.png

3 Italian clubs clubs bid £5M for (36e) Koldo (Det) *, (because that's what I had him valued at), but I have just put his value up to £10M.

a573066e835bf2d62b7c085dd288f116.png

So that's a left back, a centre-half and a right back that the big boys are in for. The squad depth chart does not look good for our defensive positions however.

d8b65464664754b9137302eb43eb87b7.png

That's for CA though. Let's look at what it looks like for PA.

b3b9de19ad8d1518fa2397167ebfdaad.png

That looks much better, but the sensible move would probably be to sell each of them for £10+ giving us a £30M kitty, and then spend about £10M on bringing in 3 players who have a better CA than the players leaving. That would be easily doable in a normal save, but in a Basque only save it's much harder. I will have to work harder at sourcing players and then look to sell the youngsters once I have replacements lined up

Very strange bid. Jul 2040.

8ae79fa0eb8ceddc507bca0baf753ed6.png

£195,000 is no big deal at all, but the question is why 32 yo (23e) Bouchez. (F.Det) * is a target for A.Madrid at all. He may have scored 70 goals and made 388 career appearances for us, but he's hardly la Liga standard never mind about Champions League standard. I can't turn down a deal like this for him though. I just can't.

I've countered with an offer of £220,000, (well I'm not letting them have him cheap), and I've also obviously stuck on a friendly clause because why not.

Tight. Jul 2040.We sell our 19 yo right back (36b) Borja (F.Amb) * to Spurs for £12M cash up front and they just add £600,000 to our transfer budget.

It's fine though really. These early deals are about getting the cash in and I have to prioritise cash now over cash later at least in the short term.

Jul, Aug and 1st Sep

Pre-season went as pre-season goes, but then we had a tough start to the league against Lyon and PSG and where as I thought we could win against Nantes, they scored 4 goals in 22 minutes and although be made a battle out of it, we still ended up with 0 points from 3 games.

Our 1st 3-point haul came against Havre, with goal-scoring GK #3 (36c) Schmidt (Bal) * scoring his 18th career goal and then (39b) Xabier (Res) * getting off the mark with his 1st career goal.

What I learned from our last season in Ligue 1 is that draws are no good and that what I need is wins and 3 points.

Sep 2040.

* Please note that the 1st fixture against Havre has already been reported on

9aaabd4cca70a1993b6d4b6f7b0be359.png

I'm used to seeing lots of green, but the reality is that I will be happy with just 1 green dot per month. 2 wins in Sep makes up for no wins in August.

As well as a GK goal, (it never gets old), you will see that young (39b) Xabier (Res) * not only got off the mark against Havre, but then followed it up in the next game with a goal against Auxerre

While we are out of the relegation zone, (just), it could have been better. The 1-0 loss away to Rennes came courtesy of a goal-keeping howler where he was robbed in possession by a pressing forward. We then lost narrowly to Lens by a single goal after leading, and then lost again by a single goal margin against Monaco

No, but there is a very good reason why. Or a few good reasons actually.

The main one is that by and large this is a Youth Only save with a very small number of externally produced Basque signings that are the exception to the rule. In the main these have been to fill a gap in "problem positions" such as centre-half, (where we have so far struggled to produce quality in depth from the intakes. As a result of this, we simply don't have players suitable as a Mentor. Even those who have been produces with good personalities such as Pro, Resolute, Determines etc, don't stay at that level because as they develop through their formative years, the overall lower determination/professional levels of the squad act to eat away at the players higher levels and bring it down closer to the average. It only takes a little bit of eating away and while you might say we should be able to build it up over the years, (And you would be correct), this is balanced with us signing players who are deemed to have relatively high PA but who might have very poor levels of Pro/Det. Basically, as quickly as I get it up, it is dragged back down again.

I did try and she a go at "managing" this a little via basic squad management where I would put everyone who was "special" into the Senior squad and make them available for Reserves or Youth team as appropriate, and while it worked to a point, hasn't been as successful as I would like.

You might note that I have activated the I'm game editor and this was to help me learn about mentoring, but my studies found that it was largely a fruitless exercise as all the marginal gains that I painstakingly achieved, seemed to be completely overshadowed by the overall impact of the 'squad average. In the end I became frustrated with the whole thing and put it on the back-burner for later in the save. I feel I am nearing that point in the save though and when I start spending £Millions on a player, then I think that might be the time to delve into the mentoring lurk again.

So in answer to your question, no, I'm not mentoring Xavier at the moment because I doubt I have anyone suitable to mentor him with, but it's certainly something that I'm looking at.

Ideally I would have a "Pro" group and a "Det" group each containing either 2 or maybe even 3 influential mentors and a couple of mentors at the time, but that's maybe 6 players away (assuming of course that I am able to buy players with the right personalities which is unlikely).

No. I think we are getting nearer that stage, but it is probably a little way off in this save still.

Apologies for all the typo's in the above post. It was done on my phone

Personalities. Sep 2040.

@numbas2 asked a really good question about the tutoring of (39b) Xabier (Res) * and although I have responded, I thought I would post the personalities of all players at the club, (excluding the 56 balanced players).

It's a mixed bag in many respect. First of all we played a weakened team in the last game so the dark colours on certain personalities might be a little misleading. Certainly many of the personalities in the bottom half of the list are in the Youth Team.

Sounds like you've got it covered, but just to confirm:

Training Facilities
The training facilities available for all visible players at the Club, senior and youth. The quality directly impacts upon player progression and training injuries.
Youth Recruitment
The Club’s recruiting of Juniors, those of home and foreign origin. Impacts upon Newgen quality.
Youth Facilities
The facilities available for Juniors only. Impacts upon Newgen quality.
Junior Coaching
The quality and quantity of Junior Coaches at the Club. Impacts upon Newgen quality.

"Impact upon Newgen quality" = both CA and PA.

"Juniors" = invisible pre-Newgen aged players.

Since Youth Recruitment and Youth Coaching increases monthly expenses via Youth Setup costs and don't have initial fee to upgrade, does it matter if I have 11 months of "X" level Youth Recruitment + Youth Coaching then level them up a month before regen date or is it better to have a higher level the whole year?

If my question wasn't clear enough let me write a hypothetical example.

Assume that:

- Country gets regens at 1st January each year

- Youth Recruitment + Youth Coaching have the same level, lets say level 3 each.

Now 2 scenarios can happen:

- Upgrade both Youth Recruitment + Youth Coaching after the regen date, let's say January 2nd (effectively 364 day expenses cost). This way your Youth Setup will increase for 12 months before the next regen date.

- Uprade both Youth Recruitment + Youth Coaching day before regen date (effectively 1 day expenses cost). This way your Youth Setup will increase for only 1 day before the next regen date.

Which opttion will grant better Youth Regends if any? Is it worth saving money with option 2?

Thanks

The truth is I don't know.

I have thought about this before though. For a start, regen dates are fluid and you never know exactly when they are coming. I would like to think that there is a "historic" element to it in such a way that Youth Coaching for example has a long term effect as in players who might have been at the Academy from the age 10, would have benefited, (or not as the case may be), from the Coaching and Facilities at the club over that time. If the HoYD leaves while the player is 14, then shouldn't he still influence the player that has been at the club since aged 10, but doesn;t come through until after the HoYD leaves?

Yeah, you are probably right, but on the other hand, when you can only sign Basque players and you are keen to prioritise your own Academy players over externally produced players, a lack of Ambition, (wanting to move to a bigger club, earn more money, win things, play at a higher level etc etc etc might not be a bad thing. There has been comment from SI that Amb is as equally important as Pro & Det when it comes to developing players, something that I absolutely do not agree with, (but please remember that this is just my opinion and not fact and I would also remind you that I was convinced that Pro was all that mattered when it came to Youth Development, when it turns out that Det is equally important).

Unambitious is an interesting title though. It suggests very negative connotations, but it;s just a word. Just a title and we need to get away from thinking about players with this name as linked to the definition that we associate with the word in the real World, and instead think about exactly what it means in FM terms, (because unfortunately the two are rarely the same).

For years I have been using the Cleon Ajax thread as my "Bible" so to speak, even though I was well aware it was out of dat e and downright wrong in some cases. That being said, there was no other tool or resource available to me that was any better. That was until now. By the way, I understand Cleon is updating his Ajax thread and making it "FM19 friendly". I expect it to be phenomenal when it comes out and can't wait. You WILL see a link in this thread. Probably many links. There is however another resource that was pointed out to me by @optimusprimal82 and that I have mentioned in this thread before is the following guide that is available on steam.

If we look at what Cleon called Unambitious back in 2013, this was it.

Unambitious Amb 1-5, Loy 11-20

That's a bit vague I think you would agree.

Now let's see what the updated guide on steam gives us. (I with there was an author......) Oh, there is. Congrats AlexGoss7. A very decent guide. :applause:

So the new guide gives us some more info, but that's not where it finishes.

(29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) * is unambitious. We know that his attributes are within the follling ranges

Ambition 1-5
Loyalty 11-20
Determination < 18
Pro <18
Leader < 19

That's not an awful lot better, so let's see what we can add.

Level Headed

So now we can add some more info to his template.

Ambition 1-5
Loyalty 12-20
Determination 1-17
Pro 13-17
Leader 1-18

It's not a huge difference, but it all helps narrow things down a little. It's also possible that a player can have more than 1 media handling style at the same time as follows......

Actually, that no longer seems to be the case. While in older versions of the game i was possible ti have multiple media handling styles at the same time, that would seem to no longer be the case. (At least none of my 105 players seem to have more than 1).

What I was thinking while writing the earlier part of this post is that the names/titles of personalities can often be misleading. Sometimes I think they would be better served doing away with these titles all-together, but the question then is, what do you replace them with? It's a little like the old names of tactics like Attacking and Gung Ho. They were actually very misleading and people took them to mean things by their name, that they did not represent at all.

If we look at this player in particular, we know that his Pro is 13-17, (so could be 17 which is very good), and we know his Det is 1-17, (so again, could be 17) and if you give me a player with 17 Pro and 17 Det then I would be a very happy chappy.

So the player is unambitious, which we agree isn't a good personality at all, and yet I have an unambitious player who has 17 Pro and 17 and I'm obviously delighted with that. Considering the nature of this particular save, with the self-imposed restrictions meaning that we are largely reliant on home-produced players, a low Ambition and High Loyalty score is also preferable.

Ambition could be as low as 1 and Loyalty could be as high as 20. Suddenly this player is looking not far off perfection.

Ambition 1
Loyalty 20
Determination 17
Professionalism 17
Leadership 18

Now you look at those attributes and try to marry them up with the pre-conceived idea you/I/we had about the personality "Unambitious" or more the "label" Unambitious. It doesn't really work does it.

Anyway, I meant to post something like this before but I think I got side-tracked so here it is.

4 points from 3 league games is decent, but again it could have been more. A 90th minute goal cost us 2 points against Bordeaux and we could have drawn against Sochaux, but they sneaked it.

A month without a win is not good, but at least we got a point at home to Caen. I had targeted the away game at Metz as one we would hopefully win, but they ran riot in the 1st half and despite the game being even, we couldn't hit a barn door with a blunderbuss.
