Season Review 2020/2021

League Table:

9dbdfa355d.jpg

United ran away with it this year. We never really had a chance after we lost to them at home.

All Competitions:

722f197be0.png

I don't know why the Friendly Cup is showing up already, but that's next preseason. Otherwise, you may notice a theme among the other competitions. It's that United is absurd.

Match Results:

2e089cbe2a.jpg

Inconsistent away from home again this season.

Squad Stats:

ff6b40c81b.png

Great performances from new star striker Bas Douglas(17C) as well as already-star Jordan Sutton(17C) and world-class star Alexis Sanchez.

Transfers Out:

5e49ad2247.jpg

Got rid of a couple people who were complaining about game time or were starting to feel like they needed a new challenge, along with some of the young players who weren't going to make it. This includes our first fees for new academy players in this save, in Kobe McDonald(17F) and Scott Anderson(17L), who were never going to make it here, but had reasonable seasons elsewhere.

-----

I'm going to put the youth stuff in a separate post, and then follow that up with some screenshot dumps and the year-later look-in at the 2020 Intake.

Youth Notes

General Loan Report

No huge standouts this season, but some solid performances from Chris WillockJeff Reine-AdelaideJonathan Gill(18E), and Ismael Bennacer

I was also surprised to see this pop up late in the season:

3cbd94ec67.jpg

He still needs some work, but a big jump up in determination will probably help with that.

We also had some awards for some first-team youth in the Premier League this year:

2020 Youth Intake Review

Sam Brownhill(20A) - 2020 2021 - Very solid improvement from Brownhill this season. The coaches still rate him very highly, and I can see why. He definitely has the potential to become a very solid DR. If I can get the determination and a few of the technicals up, he can be a very serviceable backup.

Matt Fraser(20B) - 2020 2021 - Ok. There's definitely something here. Really impressive performance, and seems to be growing into an AML role. I think he's next to get the Sanchez tutoring session to see if he can get a big bump.

Conor Lisi(20C) - 2020 2021 - Big strength improvement. There's also something here if he can continue to develop, although I need to get his mentals up.

John Agyei(20D) - 2020 2021 - Ok. A promising improvement here. Probably a backup at most, but with a good tutoring session, who knows.

Glyn Price(20E) - 2020 2021 - A bit of a mess. Not really one of my most promising GK young players.

Femi John(20F) - 2020 2021 - Ew. I think he regressed?

Jamie Thompson(20G) - 2020 2021 - Nothing going on here.

Shaun Chamberlain(20H) - 2020 2021 - Nothing going on here either.

Alan Hunter(20I) - 2020 2021 - Nope.

Samuel Kabiru(20J) - 2020 2021 - His physicals are advancing quite decently, but that's about it.

Kieran Howell(20K) - 2020 2021 - Nothing going on here either.

Samson Eze(20L) - 2020 2021 - A little bit of improvement, but no future here.

Anthony Goodliffe(20M) - 2020 2021 - Get out

Lamont Aarons(20N) - 2020 2021 - Stagnant.

Nick Grace(20O) - 2020 2021 - Don't think so

James Phillips(20P) - 2020 2021 - Sure, he exists as a guy

-----

After a year, it looks like 4 players with promise. That's pretty good. Although past that there's a whole lot of nothing. But 4 promising prospects is solid, even if they probably won't be stars, but only solid role-players.

Is Mourinho still at United? I've seen them become quite the juggernaut under him, but also toil in mediocrity.

It is still Mourinho. They've been 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 1st in the League in my 5 seasons. They're the CL final this year(although I haven't quite gotten to it), they got the domestic cup double this season, are now 4-time consecutive FA Cup champions, made the finals of the last two Champions Leagues, won the Europa League in 2016-2017, and have gone as transfer-crazy as you might expect, spending 385M across 5 seasons.

I've also seen saves where they falter a bit, and generally those are saves when I'm a Premier League team that's also spending a bunch of money. Normally I just see him take over and become a juggernaut.

Our Nicknamed Players!

Let's check in on our buddies from previous intakes.

Drake G. Johnson(17M) - After his 650K transfer to Middlesbrough over the summer(moving up from L1 to the Premier League), he got 8 cup games, performing admirably. Apart from the cup games, he was stuck in the U23s, a solid performer, but without the sort of improvement we'd expect from him if he's going to turn into anything. Still, a large transfer is a good success for him, more than I was expecting.

Ian Richardson II(17N) - After he finally found a club, in Canvey Island, it was looking like it may be a good season for him. However, he did not look it in Vanarama South. They finished bottom of the league, and Richardson didn't perform well(although, I guess nobody on that team really played well at all).

Joaquim(17O) - He hasn't done much of anything down in Brazil.

Aidan Telleus(17P) - Performed very poorly at Histon in the Regional Premier Divisions. Was spotted trying to learn French now? Also he's obsessed with Emma Watson. It's to the point where his neighbors are concerned he's stalking her because they've seen several pictures of her blow out of his apartment and end up down the street somewhere.

Barney Keane(18O) - Was picked up by The New Saints of Wales this season, although he didn't get many appearances, with a Cup start and a League substitute appearance. Probably won't amount to much, but is a fan favorite because he's good at leading cheers.

He's not going to land Emma with at 14 determination...come on, son!  Get it together!  And, even if he did, with that stamina...

Wait.  I want a paternity test.

Woah, I have a lot to catch up on!

Only went back one page - nice to see you finally winning a Premier League title. From the latest screenies, looks like Sutton, Douglas and Mumuni have become superstars. Everything looks on the right track, just need to win a few more matches :D to properly start dominating and take over Man Utd's current status.

All right, do you want to see something weird?

Here's Tom Laskowski(17A):

01194e73ee.jpg

Here's a regen from an entirely different save I have going:

2f09012529.jpg

Note how his name is Tom Laskowski and he's a center back at Arsenal. I have not seen repeat names like this before.

I've seen repeat names before and they have turned out to be SI employees. I'm not sure if researchers get their names added to the database, but I'm sure the development team can.

well how about that. I searched for the name on Google, and came up with this: http://www.sigames.com/si-team/members/tom-laskowski

Still, it's a bit weird to see a repeat name show up as an academy grad in one save, and show up at the same club in a different save(although he went through Everton's academy in that save)

I've asked this question before and it's because there is a whole profile that is saved and used rather than just a name. The players place of birth and favoured clubs are static, as I think are positions.

I've forgotten his name, (and it's really bugging me now), but there is 1 member of staff who is a Newcastle fan and twice been in my games, once as a World Class striker). I flippin hated him in my San Marino save. Not remembering his name is going to bug me all day. 😠

There's a Belgian lad that's one of those "faceinthegames" named Scott Greatorex, who often turns out to be a cracking midfielder, there's an Argentine lad who's name escapes me at the moment, who I've seen be world class multiple times, too.

Actually, I think if you type faceinthegame into the searchbar, the game will list all of them.

Haha! I'm sure I'm not quite as bad as my FM counterpart, I'd hope anyway.. :D

You see THIS is what really irks me about the FM Duncan Greenwood. He's bloomin Goldenballs. (I've just searched "faceinthegame" to find him).

8fb345d7ce1055c5a2fc66e12b1addd0.png

This is him pretty average. He's still an International striker, (2 goals in 3 games), and has even managed to secure a move to the team he supports late in his career.

Wow!

I've just scrolled down to go through all the names under "faceinthegame" and have just found this bloke.

(16d) Jake (ENG) (F.Pro) *

This was a young English GK who came through my academy in Iceland before moving on to a decent career on the English Premier League.

There are a few names that jump out at me other than the 2 mentioned above.

Adam Mingay.

Scott Greatorex, (mentioned above by someone else I think).

Tom Lazkowski, (mentioned above).

I had heard about this a few years ago, but at that point I don't think I realized that it was any more than just some names that showed up more often than others. It seems like they always have the same positions and favored clubs and information and such. It also seems like those players are generally pretty good. At least, I haven't seen them be poor in any of my saves. Which is sort of bothersome if you know about it.

Some of them have preferred positions and will generate there, others are random. The Argentine I saw become world class multiple times, once as as a striker and another time as a centre back. There are tonnes of them that end up rubbish too though.

I actually find the ones from non loaded leagues are the best. For example I rarely run the Belgian league, so that Scott Greatorex almost always generates at a big Belgian club because so few players generate in the nation overall, and thus is more likely to be at least some level of good. Probably a similar situation with that Argentine lad.

All right, I've spent some time thinking on this, and I think I need something different. It's been a fun journey, but I currently have no interest in loading this save up right now. I have a bit less fun doing "youth only" saves compared to saves when I can find areas of the squad that need improvement and actually improving them myself, or buying and developing youth. I may come back to this at times, as it's been fun and there are things I want to see happen moving in the future, but I want to take a backseat in the management part of things and more of a bird's-eye view of progression, which makes this a bad idea to keep up an FMCU thread for.

I want to transition to something a bit less high-intensity, high-expectations immediately, as well as trying to expand my skills in a different direction(for instance, for as much as I've played FM, I don't think I've ever gotten a promotion somehow!). Plus I'd like to move to more of a @ManUtd1 style of thread, with more of a narrative to go with the updates, and perhaps we'll see some of the players(both the ones who made it into my team and the ones we nicknamed who did nothing) again. I'll need to think on what I actually want to do over the weekend, but hopefully I'll get a thread up Monday.

Sorry to those of you who were following along closely, but I need to change things up a bit.

RIP Bas Douglas, Seidu Mumuni, Jordan Sutton. :(

If you're not feeling this, best thing is to start fresh indeed. Looking forward to the new career. I take it you're going to adventure yourself in the lower leagues somewhere? Welcome to the dark side. ;)
