[FM17] Porthleven - The Rise of the Cornish - An English Youth Only Challenge

Now then, this wasn't the original plan but this is the plan I'm going to go with. The original plan was to take control of Keymer & Hassocks and do a youth only save with them but due to the league rep issues with promoted and relegated teams getting a big rep boost I believed that it wouldn't be viable in the long run so instead of loading all 22 levels of English football I am instead loading 11 tiers which is 10 promotions to the Premier League.

This career has been heavily inspired thanks to @Dan BHTFC England file over in the editor's hideaway as well as @abulezz save with Kafra FC last year!

Now onto the club at hand:

Porthleven Football Club is a Cornish football club based in Porthleven in Cornwall. Founded in 1896, the club competed in the South Western Leaguefrom 1967 to 1977 and again from 1989 until the dissolution of the league in 2007, when they joined the new South West Peninsula League. They currently play in the South West Peninsula League Division One West.

Porthleven were established in 1896 and were founding members of the Cornwall Combination in 1959, winning the inaugural league title. After winning the Cornwall Combination three more times they moved up to the South Western League for the 1967–68 season. This proved to be a harder competition and, despite finishing in fifth place in their first season, the club were usually found in mid-table. After a poor 1976–77 season the club dropped back down, replacing their reserve side in the Cornwall Combination.

Another twelve-year spell in the Combination followed until, with two league titles and four other top three places behind them, Porthleven moved up again to the South Western League for the 1989–90 season. After seven years of fluctuating fortunes, the club began to enjoy more success from the 1996–97 season onwards. For eight straight years, mostly under the managership of Alan Carey, they finished in the top three. However, the ultimate prize – the league title – eluded them.

Following Carey's departure at the end of the 2003–04 season the club were forced to rebuild their squad, and consequently finished bottom of the South Western League in 2004–05, with the reserves suffering the same fate in the Cornwall Combination. Having successfully avoided re-election, Porthleven improved on this performance in subsequent seasons, and in 2006–07 finished 9th, high enough to obtain a place in the Premier Division of the newly formed South West Peninsula League. However, Porthleven withdrew their application for a place in the Premier Division for financial reasons, and from 2007 to 2008 they will compete in the South West Peninsula League Division One West.

Porthleven have entered the FA Cup on five occasions, but have only won one tie so far and have never made it through the Preliminary Rounds to the Qualifying Rounds. In the FA Vase success has been more forthcoming, with the club reaching the quarter-finals in 1997–98, becoming only the second Cornish club to reach that stage. They then went on to reach the third round or better in each of the next five seasons.

In June 2012 before the 2012–13 season, the club faced some bad news when the FA refused to allow them to enter any national FA competitions because they do not have toilet facilities in the home and away dressing room, and the referee's room.

Why Porthleven?:

It was between 3 clubs, Penzance, Porthleven and Mousehole. I felt Penzance were too 'big' and Mousehole don't have a logo in-game so Porthleven were a decent middle-ground. Also I wanted it to be a team in Cornwall because Truro are the best club in Cornwall and they're only in the Vanarama South so a good goal would be to become the best club in Cornwall and with my love of youth challenges it seemed like a good idea, especially with how proud the people of Cornwall are to be Cornish.

Rules:

  • Don't sign any players (easy peasy)
  • Don't use any downloaded tactics (I've been overly reliant on these over the years.)

These are the only 2 rules that I can think of but I will be adding a couple more 'challenges' and what can I possibly add I hear myself ask? Well, I'm going to join in with the goal-scoring GK challenge because I think that could be fun and to add even more challenge I'm going to see how far I can go without actually improving my facilities just to see how I can do!

Leagues Loaded:

England down to level 11

Database Size:

Custom (58,920 players)

  • All players based in England
  • Players from top clubs and top division clubs (Europe)
  • Players with national reputation (Europe)
  • Players from clubs in continental competition (Europe)

Hopefully, fingers crossed that this will be my save now until the release of FM18 next November, I hope people will follow and enjoy the painstakingly long journey to the top of English Football!

The Squad and best XI:

588379d60b61965bc70f95767827677e.png

This is the entire squad including reserves and under 18's, to tell who's who the reserves are tagged (ResA-G) and the 3 in the youth team are (YP0a-c). We lack a lot of quality with Dean Hodges, Colin Bartlett and Marios Efthymiou being the key players. If we were to play with a standard 4-4-2 then this is what the Best XI would look like.

Marios Efthymiou (GK)

Ray Watkins (DR) - Carl Pearson (DCR) - Dean Hodges (DCL) - Alan Fox (DL)

Colin Bartlett (MR) - Jake Harrison (MCR) - Geoff Buckland (MCL) - Ross Pashen (ML)

Kieran Taylor (STCR) - Steve Simmons (STCL)

This is being judged by my 2JPA 3JPP assistant though!

2016/17 Pre-Season

d29127a1b74ce15f725614cf5b23dd21.png

An unbeaten pre-season saw us beat both Camelford and Newquay who are in the division above us and a draw with Plymouth Marjon who are in the same division as us.

We're predicted 13th out of 18 and there's no relegation so hopefully I'll be safe in the job regardless of what happens!

The board want top half so 9th and above and to reach the second round of the Walter C Parson Cup. We also sold 5 season tickets at £75 each!

The tactic is going to evolve a lot over the years, but for right now here is what I'm going for (counter since we're playing away from home next)

More home points! And the league is still stupidly close with 2 points still separating 1st and 10th after almost half the games played! Also, in the 4-1 win at home to Holsworthy goalkeeper Chris Smith scored for the first time in his career and becomes the first goalkeeper to score for Porthleven!

Thanks Jamie :D

Talk about your evenly-skilled teams!

Good luck - this is a great save and I had a blast with it last year and am having a blast (until my save stopped working!) with it this year!

Things are still just as tight after 20 games! Thanks abulezz and good luck with your next attempt :)

I live five minutes from Porthleven and was rubbing my eyes in disbelief when I saw this threat. I live in and play for Helston AFC (the next town along, the league above)  but Porthleven is a beautiful little fishing village so best of luck. Will follow with interest!

Thanks for following Chris, what a coincidence, I'd love to go down there at some point!

Blimey, from top to tenth in three games, that is a tight league!

My friend plays in goal for Wendron United, who you've beaten twice 2-0 - he won't be best pleased with that :D

Incredibly tight! He won't be pleased at all, Wendron have the 3rd worst defence in the league :D

Can you show your facilities? This young intake is amazing. First time I see that all players from youth intake have 5 stars :) . This is amazing

Here you go Vevi, the facilities are terrible and so are the players :)

On 18/11/2016 at 20:33, Dan BHTFC said:

I'm guessing it's 5 stars because of the poor quality of the current squad

That would be correct.

A good final 2 games of the season see us finish strongly up in 4th, this league is very tightly contested so next year I'll be looking for a top 7 finish.

For some reason Billy Stockbridge won the top goalscorer award...even though Connor Ball (ResG) scored 17 goals which is obviously more than Billy's 9. It was still only high enough for Connor to finish as the 8th top scorer in the league.

And here's our team of the season.

Next season will be a lot slower as in the Detail Level options England's match detail has been set to none with a 2.5* game speed, I'll be changing this to Main Stages so all the leagues will process with more detail and this takes my game speed down to 1*.

Semi-Pro at level 11 when the club doesn't even have toilets? Uh oh...

Well the board asked my opinion on them trying to buy the stadium as well...

Pre-Season 2017/18

88da83ec47f2338c3d9e949253b280b8.png

An unbeaten pre-season against some of the local sides.

d366acbc6db400281dbbe09d2586949e.png

Pretty much the same as last season and the board want a top half finish.

ef25ad86cce976c0a782d36acc2114f3.png

So we've made an extra £100 on sponsorship, we've saved £400 on squad bonuses and we've made £375 more on season ticket sales this year.

After 12 games we've drawn as many as we did in the entire of last season's 34 game campaign, if we're looking at the positives then we have the best defence in the league and we're just 5 points from 1st. If we look at the negatives then we're effectively only 4 points from 14th as well.

Are you happy not to be losing much or annoyed not to be winning?

I'm annoyed to not be winning, although we are missing 3 first team players from last season, starting DC Dean Hodges left us to play for Ivybridge in the league above in early September, starting MR Colin Bartlett left us to join Godalming & Farncombe Athletic in the Surrey County Intermediate League (Western) Premier which is actually a level 12 league and starting ML Ross Pashen left us for Liskeard Athletic in the same league as us because I wouldn't give him £140 per appearance.

Wadebridge are the champions and our unbeaten run is finally over and I'm rather glad by that, we actually went a month without a 1-1 draw! Chris Smith the goalkeeper also scored 3 goals this month with the best being this free kick from 29 yards out I think it was.

We've improved on last season, finishing 2 places higher and with 3 more points, we also conceded 23 less goals than last season so a lot of positives to take. One negative though is that if just 2 of our 15 draws were wins then we would have won the league on goal difference.

Not as many goals scored this season so the top scorer only got 11, I'm also messing with the tactic so it probably won't look like this next season.

The player database was up to 98,000 with just England loaded but since last years Champions League Final was Tottenham vs Man City and this years Champions League Final is Tottenham vs Man Utd and last years Europa League Final was Man Utd vs Inter I've decided that England are going to become very overpowered so I'm loading the top 2 leagues of the top 5 countries in Europe (Portugal is added since Braga are in this seasons Europa League Final so there's potential there as well.)

2018/19 Pre-Season

68b59a6713fc7dbf1fca76af84a15f59.png

A mixed pre-season losing to fake Camelford and to Saltash but a good win over Ivybridge who are in the league above with goalkeeper Chris Smith netting our 1st goal of the season.

That's good, expectations are at an all time low so I have next to no pressure.

Sponsorship remains the same, we also sold 10 season tickets again.

efcd000b55d270784a0e4795767927d2.png

Almost all of the staff refused to renew their contracts, only 3 replacements though as I'm aiming to keep expenditure low.
