  1. You should try them out, a lot of times in this game their attributes and traits dictate what will happen. Perhaps your regista has 18 stamina and 20 work rate he could play differently. Ultimately you should consider how these roles move and make your own decisions, by trying them out in a game to see if that is the kind of movement you want.
  2. Apart from Cleon, there are very few other content creators out there I trust. Having said that none of us are perfect, so if there is ANYTHING that strikes you as odd, always ask on these forums and people can point you in the right direction, @Cleon and I could kick the bucket, there is always someone who has the right information or can point you in the direction of one who might.
  3. https://www.dropbox.com/s/aujhci2akxskg51/Book Of Roles.pdf?dl=0 Here it is, there is another guide coming. Finally got the juices flowing, had reached a bit of a deadspace for the last few weeks cos I lost someone dear to me, so apologies for taking so long.
  4. Yeah if someone needs to translate it and redistribute it, that's fine by me, but please let me know in advance.
  5. Quite a few people have asked me for an updated Book of Roles guide, there are some minor changes to roles that I will reflect in the guide and the key differences I find between certain roles. The guide also captures how these roles can move in your tactical systems. Expect to see the guide later. Each year I also release several guides instead of starting long threaded discussions here, simply because they eventually get lost in the conversations on the forum. The upcoming guide will focus on: mentality, role and duty selection, analysing systems. I will use several formations to explain how I break down the transitions and why I make certain tweaks. I plan to cover a broad range of systems from Jupp Heyncke's Bayern, positional play etc. So if anyone wants something specific covered please let me know in this thread. While I will gather feedback from everyone, I can't guarantee every request will be covered. As far as training is concerned, the last training guide that I wrote with editorial input from SI, that also included the mentoring section from Cleon will not be updated because training is essentially the same. As long as you follow a balanced training schedule things work as expected. There are no magic training systems that will give you 4% year on year growth. If any does its a fluke that lasts.....a really short time. FM23 Main Changes - Wingbacks - do not dribble more as a locked instruction. This role can be used in any system and a detailed explanation is in the guide.
  6. There is also a possibility that IFS are not cutting inside because there is no space or central defenders are hoofing the ball because the defensive line is too deep and their passing options are too risky to pass to.
  7. Changing mentality isn’t that bad of a move. It adjusts all the sliders by a small amount. Say you want to reduce risk and at the same time you want to drop your defence a bit. Changing the defensive line itself is a big change, but reducing mentality makes a smaller change to passing, tempo, creative freedom, width, line of engagement and defensive line. I do this quite a lot on my livestreams. Sometimes I have a lead to see out. I drop my mentality by one notch. If you were to drop from say attacking to very defensive is that bad? No, not unless you have considered its impact on the sliders and how your duties react. When seeing our matches, it’s important to consider your overall shape defensively and then consider what you are going to do after defending a ball. Do your players look to release someone in attack? Or do they just hoof it? Your choice of duties and roles might affect how your team plays defensive phases out.
  8. A good guide that I am sure plenty of people appreciate, its basically putting the approach that's been used by plenty of people familiar with the old school way of doing it. And its good to see it posted here too. The database of scouted players has been my fallback for many years and that's always at your disposal. I do feel that SI need to answer the "why" a player has been recommended. We know its a 'general' piece of advice, but in as far as recruitment meetings are concerned, I would like the "why" part answered. Why has a specific player been recommended? A player may have an "A" scouting recommendation, but why is he so good? With the data available, scouts should be able to indicate that the player has been recommended because he gets into good goal scoring positions, or he is technically so skilled with the ball he creates goal scoring chances from his set pieces. Now that information is in the data that's already in the game. All it needs is a bit of translation for players. Its ok if SI uses their own metrics to determine say the quality of finishing or the quality of a players defensive actions. Hard core players can still use their spreadsheets and create their own tools like how FMstag and I have done. The work flow n the game is still a bit tedious and it can be improved making it more accessible and easier for the new gamer. Not everyone who plays the game football manager understands how to use metrics in the game to distinguish quality, SI can offer that up for people who play the game by improving how the data hub works with scouting . I think this is a great way for the game to reach out to more casual players and bridge the gap between the hardcore statistics driven player and the casuals.
  9. I use match practice during the week as well, it’s efficient, focusing on the roles. And, you can always add one recovery session on the same day that reduces the risk of injury. It’s my must have session in the trading schedule that I have. The rest of the sessions lead to a fairly balanced training schedule which I go on to use every week. I have yet to encounter major injury issues.
  10. The more noise being generated doesn't mean its an issue SI will look at. SI do track how people are performing with the game. They do know what the win ratio of human managers is. And internally and with a core group of testers they have benchmarks they will set to see if the game is playing right. Not everyone will play the game the same way. In this match engine, issues were flagged and raised. SI react to bug reports not to "feelings". Make the group louder by adding more people won't make it any better. Yes this is the feedback thread and SI will evaluate the feedback on the thread to get the general feel of the game, they also have internal and external testers who will give feedback too. And some of the feedback can be very critical but constructive, which result in detailed bug reports SI will review and react to. And that is something they can work with. With the fixes they might put in as a result, don't be surprised if this version of the game becomes harder to play with it, and when the defending gets improved which it undoubtably will, there will be feedback along the likes of "my strikers can't score" or "why do I need to make changes to my tactic to hold onto a lead". Its just the way these kind of things work. And yes SI are hard at work with the game, its just this: If you feel strongly that something should play in a specific way, eg. a role, raise a bug report, because you could be a unique player playing it in a unique way.
  11. Yeah but their opponents played much lower defensive line and low block, and basically asked to be cut open slowly
  12. The Dutch are notoriously hard to replicate, the main role being De Jong, who usually swaps with a central defender. Then they have the diamond defence and the diamond buildup. There are definitely a few ways to do this. My BPDs will have dribble more, Ake and VVD can bring the ball up and when that happens De Jong slots into defence. If I am not mistaken De Light has the necessary attributes to slot back in. I also want to capture the vulnerability of the system. In the centre we have the "Bergs" who normally start centrally then push into the halfsspace to support the wingbacks. Blind and Dumfries. I reckon having them as Mezzalas helps, with the mezzala on the left in a higher starting position it will encourage space for the DM to run with ball. Yeah he has dribble more intentionally cos whenever De Jong runs off its time for Dutch hearts to hold their breath. Senegal have shown this is actually a weakness. With the either side of the defenders as BPD and both potentially being a bit higher in the transition, we will usually see VVD as the last man. The keeper is the wrong role. :-) should be a sweeper keeper in keeping with the style of the dutch, but this would be my replication. Hmm need to change my combination up top If we played a DLF(A) and a PF(S) we could get one dropping deep but keeping central and the other moving wide. And I don't often see the strikers on the shoulder of the last man, dropping deep to help build up play then get into the box.
  13. Great idea for a thread maybe it will get me fired up for the World Cup. Been a rough few weeks for me, and just not feeling the itch.
  14. Yeah and Liverpool are a good side, they also play a solid structured system that uses width. You want to play a 442 against them. Against such a team you probably need strong defenders and a strong central midfield, and you have to be prepared to make subs at the right time. There is micro management involved during the game, and unless you know what to do perhaps the 442 might be challenging for you. In my last 10 games I had to secure wins all the way to guarantee promotion, and in a lot of the matches I needed to see out a 1 goal difference. This meant a fair bit of selection strategy plus game management. If you want to win all your games, you need to become very good at the game.
  15. Start by posting your tactic. If you don't start there, you might get generalisations that will be less helpful
  16. Generally its a good idea to read the sticky threads at the top of the forum. If you have issues with the game perhaps post your tactic and see if others might spot what you could be doing wrong. This however is not the feedback thread, where SI might actually read and gather feedback from.
  17. When you create a tactic, you choose the team instructions and the roles and duties to create the kind of tactic you want. The roles and duties help you generate that kind of movement on and off the ball. To give you an example. If the tactic had a PF(S) and you changed it to an AF that is a big change to the dynamics of the tactic. Now you have taken a role that would have generally stayed in a central area and have opted to go for one that has a lot more movement down to the channels too. Or say you changed a role from a CM(A) to a MEZ(A), both roles play very differently. In general when someone creates a tactic they are either after specific movement patterns or sometimes they could be using generic roles like a CM because they want to fill that position with a specific type of player. If I used a midfielder like Kevin De B there he would play very differently than Rodrigo De Paul, because they both have different attribute sets and traits. To answer it will only make it more effective if you know what the roles do and how they play out with different attributes/traits. And sometimes even how roles can combine with other roles.
  18. I think the OPs question has been clearly answered by Jack and an explanation on how its worked. And to that end I think the thread has served its purpose. I will be closing it down now.
  19. Closing the thread as ranting here isn’t allowed. Post a tactic, drive a discussion or ask a question.
  20. My best tactic is the 442 flat used it with Palermo in the last 10 games to secure promotion. Went on a nice winning run. Told one of my friends how to set it up and he basically used my settings and went on a big winning run. But hey, the whole world thinks my head is in the ground ignoring defensive errors, maybe people should try and find out why I am making less defensive errors even when I am live-streaming my play without attributes.
  21. The passing instructions on team mentality are supposed to be in line with team mentality. So a defensive tactic will have a team passing setting of direct, because we need to get the ball up quick. Positive would see the side willing to take risks to build goal scoring chances so it’s on slightly shorter, or shorter (can’t remember which. And on very attacking mentality the goal is to get the balL up as quickly as we can even if it’s a bad idea hence more direct. Team pressing is also adjusted to reflect this but here I will caution people to pay attention to how this is set up to play with DL and LOE.
  22. No you interpreted to mean the line of defense moves up. That’s your interpretation, through no fault of your own. To me it simply means defenders step up to engage, to press, to close down passing lanes, and if needed trigger the offside trap. Is it SI’s fault? Not really. Unless you expect them to do a detailed explanation of all the mechanics which I doubt any developer ever does with any game. Should they clear up any confusion, yes and they did in the thread. Now to Max’s video, it’s complete garbage. Why? He uses average positioning! Which statistician in the world begins an analysis with a benchmark being an average? Heat maps as well. So I was stunned. As far as I am concerned what he made was a generalisation. The biggest weakness in stats is confirmation bias and it’s easy to fall into that trap. Is there a better way to do this? Yes why not start a thread attach your saves and your findings and ask SI if there is an issue. Discuss with others what a good way of doing a study like this could look like. Choosing instead to drop a video with a rudimentary understanding on statistical research will naturally draw criticism. When any scholar submits a hypothesis, they will and should expect peer review and criticism, but if the only plan is to do a YouTube video in some desperate attempt to drive views drawing in the less informed then be prepared to face criticism. And that’s whats happened.
