I've never been a fan of those point target ultimatums, they always seem unreasonably demanding and probably don't take into account the opposition.

As they called me in a day after the season ended, and the fixtures hadn't been released, indeed they didn't take the opposition into account. That only added to my sense of injustice

Thats interesting. Are you staying on as Swansea manager also?

I resigned as Swansea manager immediately after accepting the England job. It's not realistic that England would let me stay on, and normally the subject is brought up at interview, but they didn't ask, so I just quit myself

I’m really hoping the answer is a big fat YES! So did Newcastle go down?

Sadly not. They finished 5 points clear of relegation, sacked the manager who replaced me, and then refused to offer me an interview!

I made one change to the squad for the October games, a friendly away to Canada and Nations League game in Iceland. Will Hughes replaces Dael Fry. Here are the teams for the Canada game

and we had far too much for the Canadians

I don't regard promotion from Nations League B as an achievement. It's thanks to my predecessor getting relegated that England were in the division at all, and probably the only reason I was considered for the job. I've got them back up, but the real job is qualifying for (and hopefully winning) World Cup 2026

This is how the teams lined up at Wembley

768616793_VNorwayh.thumb.PNG.91bca2a6bafd7b8d38974265d704a588.PNG

a game which we won relatively easily

1739778343_EngvNor2024.thumb.PNG.53fe2d9b80d2bddfc8fb0c0f77051809.PNG

which leaves Norway facing near-certain relegation. The first decider in the Nations League is results between teams, and Iceland beat Norway 4-1 in the first game between them, meaning Norway need to win by 4 goals to relegate Iceland

These were the teams for the USA Friendly

which, apart from a mad 60 seconds, was utterly devoid of any highlights. The goals were separated by 50 seconds, Joe Gomez scored first

Next up was what should be one of the easiest games in the group, Latvia at home. These were the teams

and it went exactly to form, with another big England win

leaving us 3 points clear at the top, and still to concede a goal

It's now July, and still 7 weeks until our next game, but out of the blue, just had this

Ordinarily, I'd jump at it, but given the way this career has gone, and that I've set out to win something in each job and then move on, it feels wrong to take it. I'll be declining it, but with a heavy heart. If they ask me again when I'm in a position to move jobs, I'll do it, but not now

Things have taken an interesting turn!

Also, glad to see Dael Fry make your squad for England.  He's been a top performer in my Middlesbrough team and it's been a job keeping hold of him!

I've left him out of the squad this time. He joined Bournemouth a few seasons ago, and they got relegated to the Championship this time. If he is getting 8.5 ratings in that league, I'll put him back in, but if not, he'll need to get back to the Premier League

Here are the lineups for our final qualifier, away to Latvia

We didn't manage to go the entire campaign without conceding, but still comfortably beat Latvia, despite a red card

and we end qualifying 11 points clear at the top

Next up are two friendlies in March, at home to Portugal and Paraguay. Here is my squad. The major talking point is that Gunn and Pickford are no longer fighting it out to be first choice keeper. Joe Williams will be first choice

These are the teams for England v Paraguay. The selection is heavily influenced by the number of managers demanding that their players only play 45 minutes

988201013_vParaguay2026.thumb.PNG.253051d65f7078eb648859afc6d054cc.PNG

but despite having to rotate the squad, and make quite a few subs, we came away with another win.
