PaulHartman71
March We got yet another Championship side in the Quarter Final and we put them away to make the Semi Final, without playing a single top tier team. We will however play Arsenal in the Semi Final. A month to forget in the league tbh. Realistically we will probably finish somewhere between 11th and 13th, which isn't thaaat bad. I'm hoping we can be a little bit more competitive in the race for Europa next season.
PaulHartman71
I was planning to finish the update for the last two months of the season before I went on holiday for 2 weeks, but due to packing and various other things, I won't get the time. Apologies to leave it on a bit of a cliff hanger with the FA Cup Semi etc

PaulHartman71
45,000 of our fans have flocked to Wembley to watch us take on Arsenal. Let's hope we can give them something to shout about!
PaulHartman71
7th minute: Kilday running towards the Arsenal goal, he might have a crack here from range, he does...and that's not troubling the keeper!
PaulHartman71
28th minute: Mxoli for the Gunners in his own half, he's got Dennis Boonen ahead of him, he plays him in, Boonen with Zikic running into the box, he's found him... it's ZIKIC...saved by Messadi!
PaulHartman71
46th minute: The referee is calling for time on what has been a fairly uneventful first half. Neither side really looking like scoring so far, you'd have to think Adam Hart would be the happier of the two managers at the minute.
PaulHartman71
61st minute: Arsenal with a corner. Mohau Mxoli stands over it. He plays it short to Sean Gray, Gray will play it into the middle where GAETANO IS THERE... and that's somehow not gone into the net!
PaulHartman71
80th minute: Diaz in his own half for Arsenal, he's got Zikic standing alongside the two Wednesday defenders in their half, Diaz hits a long ball over the top, could he get Zikic through... OHHHH AND DESLEY GROT HAS TRIPPED HIM JUST AS HE WAS RUNNING THROUGH AT GOAL!!! Surely he was the last man there? He's been on the pitch for 5 minutes and he could be off here. The referee's putting his hand in his pocket and... IT'S ONLY A YELLOW??? The Arsenal fans and players are going nuts, surely that's a red? The referee has bottled it here, what a huge let off for Wednesday and Grot with 10 minutes left on the clock!
PaulHartman71
87th minute: Arsenal still going for a late goal. Diaz again putting pressure on. Dubois hits a great ball out wide to Mxoli who has 3 red shirts in the middle, can he pick one out... no! Elias has brought him down! It's a decent tackle to make because Mxoli had a lot of options in the box, but unfortunately that's one foul too many for Elias as the referee has rightfully sent him off! An early bath for the Brazilian who just has to hope his sacrifice is worth it for his team!
PaulHartman71
93rd minute: It ends 0-0 in normal time here at Wembley! Sheffield Wednesday have just about held on in there so far, they got pretty lucky not to have Grot sent off, but Elias did end up going in the end so they will have to defend with 10 men for the remaining half hour. Arsenal will fancy their chances!
PaulHartman71
97th minute: Carvalho for Arsenal. Back in the middle to Diaz, Diaz out wide right to Carlos who will run down the line and hope to put a ball in the box... it's towards the back post and Dupont heads it out, but it's only as far as Rivera on the edge of the boxxxxxx..... ohhh and his shot's deflected and finds the bottom right corner!!! The Gunners finally take the lead and it's ARSENAL 1-0 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY! And surely there's no way back now for Adam Hart's 10 men.
PaulHartman71
105th minute: A throw in for Wednesday here in the Arsenal half, maybe one last chance before half-time in extra-time, but surely the referee has to think about blowing soon. Hepworth chucks it over to Semlali, Semlali finds Buijs on the edge of the box, he passes out wide left to Verdier, Kilday has come to just outside the box and Verdier finds him, Kilday to strike it....OHHHHH AND IT'S HIT AN ARSENAL FOOT AND FLEW INTO THE NET!!!! UNBELIEVABLE SCENES HERE AT WEMBLEY! AGAINST ALL THE ODDS, ANDY KILDAY HAS PUT WEDNESDAY RIGHT BACK IN THIS! It's ARSENAL 1-1 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
PaulHartman71
106th minute: Half-time in extra-time and what a final 15 minutes we're gonna have here! Can Wednesday hold on for penalties or even get the win here?!
PaulHartman71
116th minute: Mxoli to Diaz, he's got Zikic in the box, he finds him, ZIKIC SURELY TO WIN IT....OH AND BIG SAVE FROM THE KEEPER...but it comes back to Zigic....NO GREAT DEFLECTION FROM GROT... but Zigic AGAINNNNNN!!! They did their best but they couldn't keep him out! He wheels away in celebration, because that goal has surely put his team into the final! It's ARSENAL 2-1 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY! PaulHartman71
April An unbeaten April in the league sees us win twice against Wolves and Stoke, as well as draw twice with Doncaster and United, with the point at United being a particular highlight. 2 games to go and we will probably finish around where we are now, with the potential to get 10th if Villa slip up. PaulHartman71
May We end the year with a good away win at Palace and an unfortunate 2-1 loss at home to league winners City. 1 position lower than last year but I don't think that matters too much. PaulHartman71
Season 40: Sheffield Wednesday A fairly good 2nd season, with the FA Cup run being the highlight. Squad Andy Kilday was the clear standout, with the Scottish striker scoring 26 goals in 42 games, which also made him the top scorer of the entire Premier League this season. Ian Hepworth and Siphesible Dlamini also had very good seasons at ML and CB respectively. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Season Club Division Position Achievements/Other --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2016/17 Ipswich Wanderers Eastern Counties Premier League 8th Eastern Counties League Cup winners 2017/18 Ipswich Wanderers Eastern Counties Premier League 11th Left in November --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2017/18 Coventry Sphinx Midland Football Premier League 13th N/A 2018/19 Coventry Sphinx Midland Football Premier League 10th Left in December -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018/19 Carlton Town United Counties Premier League 8th United Counties League Cup runners-up. How long is your contract now? Surprised to see Fulham finish 3rd! We have a reasonable amount in the bank but nowhere near the sort of money we had last season. I think we'll get a decent budget in the summer, around £30M or so with the potential for more if some players leave for decent money. The squad is fairly decent already and I think other than replacing players that might leave, my main goal for next season will be improving the quality of back-up player we have and taking some punts on cheap 16-20 year olds who my scouts rate. My contract expires at the end of next season, which certainly puts me in the shop window if they don't renew any time soon. I'm only on £12.5K p/w and have the highest badge now, but my reputation is still "only" 55 percent so I don't think any top clubs will necessarily come in for me as I haven't done anything of massive note yet. I could certainly see a mid-table side like Wolves or Aston Villa who have a woeful start and sack their manager possibly coming in for me, or maybe someone like Celtic if they sack their manager. Yeah I'm not really sure where Fulham have come from to finish 3rd like that. It will be interesting to see how they cope with having Champions League football next season and if they can become a threat to the top 4 like West Ham have, although still being stuck in the 25K Craven Cottage may hold them back for now. mrdanbartlett
Why not focus on signing 1-2 free players as backups, 1-3 top signings to improve the XI and then use the players they replaced as better backups? Cool, defo interesting times ahead, hopefully you can push for a Europa place.
PaulHartman71
The biggest departure of the summer saw Alexis Vega leave to Aston Villa for £30M, he was important for us last season but I'm very pleased to have made a £23M profit on him. Bryan Ruff was only a back-up so I was happy to let him leave for £13M to West Brom. Dlamini was very good at CB for us last season, but £12M on a 31 year old we picked up for a free last season on massive wages was too good to turn down. Our keeper, Messadi, also left for a slight profit to QPR. We took in a total of £67M this summer. A total of £74M was spent this summer. We dropped £18M on Dale Lewis, he's an 18 year old central midfielder who my scouts rated very highly potential wise and he's already got 5 caps for Wales. Haythem Riahi was another big arrival, with the 26 year old Tunisian joining from Celtic, I'm hoping he can be as good a signing as Kildway was from them last season. Lucio is a young Brazilian CB who we signed for just £11M which looks to be great value, we were fortunate he got a cap for Brazil recently which managed to help get the work permit over the line I think. Mauro Rodriguez joined from Olympiakos to be our new first choice keeper, he looks good and has impressed in Greece the last few years. The only other proper first team signing is Souleymane Lybohy from Fenerbache, the 26 year old experienced Ivorian will add some real quality to our midfield. Leandro Rojas is a 23 year old Colombian international who joins from Argentina, he can provide cover at RB and CB. Alex Froggart is a 23 year old MRC who adds depth and HGness to our team, with Bandar Ali a versatile Saudi Arabian winger (also counts as HG) who will come in to be back-up too. Richard Carter-Haywood is another young midfielder who has potential to go on and be part of the first team, but he too also adds back-up and HG-ness to our squad. The other signings are all punts on young players my scouts rate that weren't that expensive. The hope is we can kind of operate a Chelsea-like thing where we loan and blood these players and they either become part of the team, or we make a profit on them. Armin Hadzik is a 19 year old Swiss striker who didn't get much of a look in at Arsenal, we hope to give him another chance to shine. We also picked up 2 young Norwegian lads, Borgar Riis a winger/striker and Havard Gudmestad who can play at CB, MC or ST. We've also taken punts on two lads from the non-league: Jack Rufer, a New Zealand born 17 year old MRC/ST from Bromley, as well as Michael King, a 22 year old Irish striker who spent last season tearing it up in the 9th tier for Loughborough Uni. My scouts give him 4* potential, so maybe he can be the next Jamie Vardy!
PaulHartman71
August A 3-1 win at my old stomping ground sees us progress in the League Cup. A decent enough start to the season, which saw a big scoring draw at home to Sunderland, a 3-1 dismantling of Villa and a loss at the Sir Bobby Charlton Stadium. PaulHartman71
September A 1-0 win sees us through against Barnsley. A pretty deflating September, with a sole victory at Bournemouth being the only highlight in a month which saw us lose our other 3 games, granted 2 were against better sides in City and Chelsea, but frustrating nonetheless. A meh start to the year.
PaulHartman71
Oh and I forgot to mention: Matt has gone on loan to Leamington Spa of the Southern Premier League. PaulHartman71
December Not a particularly encouraging end to 2056, as in our last 7 matches of the calendar year, we win just 1, draw 2 and lose 4. We sit in 13th place, with the 1 saving grace being that the road to 8th is only 6 points.
PaulHartman71
The only departure this January saw back-up squad member Mohammed Semlali leave for Hibs for £4.9M. PaulHartman71
January Brentford of League 1 gave us a real game in the initial home match, but we went to theirs towards the end of the month for the replay and breezed past them. Not too bad a start to the calendar year, with a 4-2 win against Villa, a 3-0 decimation of QPR and a decent draw at Chelsea. We did lose to the Manchester clubs, but they are both much stronger sides than we are. We're still only 13th, but there's certainly space to rise up into 8th. 7th is probably what we need for Europa League though, so we may have to focus on the FA Cup. PaulHartman71
February Colchester of the Championship took us to yet another replay in the 4th round, but again in the return game we were much better and rolled them over without too much trouble. We got another good draw with Reading at home in the next round, they were really quite poor and we put them away without even breaking a sweat really. A very positive month, with 3 wins and 1 draw. The decimation of Southampton was a particular highlight, with Ian Hepworth having a hell of a game to get a hat-trick from wide left. We're up to 8th and West Ham are 6 points ahead of us in 7th, we're in good form and if we can keep it up maybe we can catch them and get the Europa League spot by finishing 7th, although we'd need things to go our way in the FA Cup. One way to ensure that happening is to win it ourselves, I'm not sure if we can do that but our Quarter Final match is at home to bottom place Everton, so I'm really hoping it will be back to back Semi's for us. PaulHartman71
Ooh this is interesting. Fulham have canned their manager and I'm being linked with it in the press. They finished bottom of their Champions League group so aren't still in Europe, but I imagine they would've got a fair bit of money from that. Not sure if it would be an ideal move or not at this stage, but we'll have to see if they come in for me or not as the board still haven't offered me a new deal yet... PaulHartman71
March We beat Everton 2-0 to get back in the FA Cup Semi Final. We will once again play Arsenal at Wembley. Can we do them this time? We've got a better side this year, but they're still a very good team who are better than us. It will be a tough one. We beat Everton again in the league, a result sandwiched inbetween draws with West Brom and Liverpool. We then picked up a huge win at West Ham, which puts us right in the hunt for 7th place. With 5 games to go we need to make up 2 points on them to get 7th, but we're right in with a big chance to do it.
PaulHartman71
Well I'm not going to Fulham... Interesting that they only gave me a 1 year deal, not sure if that's just because I'm 70 now Goes back to the good old days of 1 year deals though. A slight pay rise but with the 50 percent clause in and only a year on it I'm not sure how many clubs would be put off by it. I suppose I haven't ended up moving this season despite a lower contract expiring for most of it, although I'm not sure how many teams 'bigger' than us have lost their manager. Fulham was the main one I noticed but they seemed to get someone else in anyway, I'd assume they'd be a bigger reputation club since they were in the CL last season, but I'm not sure how much money they'd have from having such low revenue outside of that. It will be interesting going forward either way.
PaulHartman71
We lineup with our strongest team available. PaulHartman71
14th minute: Riahi advancing in the middle of his own half. He's got Verdier and Kilday ahead in the Arsenal half, with Van Gastel running down the right almost on the halfway line. He plays a short pass across to Van Gastel who begins dribbling into space towards the Arsenal back four... someone should really think about closing him down as he gets closer to the box, the right back's gone for him but Van Gastel spins him... he cuts inside and he's got options here with Verdier and Kilday aheado of him... will he pass or go it ALONEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..........OHHHHHHHHHHHH WHAT A GOAL FROM VAN GASTEL!!! A beautifully hit strike soares into the top left corner!! It's SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 1-0 ARSENAL
PaulHartman71
24th minute: Thomma bringing it forward for The Gunners. They're trailing and will want to address that sooner rather than later. He plays a short pass to Boonen and Boonen hangs onto it before playing a lovely weighted ball to Thomma who has run into acres of space on the left ring, where is the Wednesday right back?! Thomma running into the box with Zikic in the middle surely he'll score...NO!!!! Zikic had a really good chance from 3 or 4 yards out but I think Lucio might just have done enough to put him off, good work from the Wednesday centre half. PaulHartman71
37th minute: It's a free-kick in a very tasty position for Arsenal. Thomma is standing over it. 4 men in the wall, is that enough, did the keeper only want 4? Will he regret that? We'll see as Thomma STRIKES IT..... just wide! He usually scores from that range! PaulHartman71
46th minute: It's half time and Adam Hart's men will be overjoyed to go into-half time 1-0 up! Arsenal have gone after them but so far they haven't done enough to get back in this game.
PaulHartman71
53rd minute: Verdier has it now. Kilday making a run at goal ahead of him, he tries to find the Scotsman... but a great interception from Farges who hammers it deep into the Wednesday half to Zikic who picks it up in some space... he's got Boonen running ahead of him, he finds him and now Boonen has a real chance.... ohhhh and that's a big save from Rodriguez in the Wednesday goal! PaulHartman71
64th minute: Another free-kick in a dangerous position for Arsenal. It looks like Carvalho will take this one since it's more of a right footers angle. Carvalho to curl it... OHHH BIG SAVE FROM RODRIGUEZ BUT HE CAN ONLY PARRY IT AS IT FALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GOAL... BAKERO IS THERE BUT LUCIO SMASHES IT AWAY JUST IN TIME! Arsenal doing everything they can but they can't quite get a goal.
PaulHartman71
68th minute: Behrenbeck with the ball down the left flank of Arsenal's half. He makes a short pass towards Lybohy who is in the middle in a bit of space... he play it to Kilday who is just outside the box with his back to goal, he turns and finds Verdier WHO SHOOTS FIRST TIMEEEEEEEEEEEEE........ a powerful shot that will have stung the keeper's hands, but he's held onto it nonetheless! A decent chance for Wednesday there!
