McMaster#28
Oh, another question for Phil and the likes: How has Marc Crosas spella at Lyon gone? From what I can find out he hasn't played that much.
yovan
He played several games at the beginning and now he barely gets playing time. I think he did well considering it was his first experience in a top division.

skybluedave
Regarding Frances Euro squad. I seem a little confused. I understand Coupet will start ahead of Frey. But why has Frey never been given a chance to start. IMO he's a better keeper. Thuram will be a disaster IMO, so past it now. Mexes should be starting. Clerc and Sagnol haven't been playing alot recently, through injuries or just not starting. So why of earth is Sagna not in there? And the midfield, Makelele and Vieira will struggle. Pretty much non offensive in the slightest. Watching Vieira yesterday for Inter, he looked terrible. I really think he'll struggle at the Euro's and considering how important he is, I think France will struggle. Can't help but think Toulalan and Flamini would be better. Also as the opening game is against, the so called weakest oppo in the group. I think there could be a suprise result which could force Domenech to bring in Frey, Mexes and Toulalan ala Portugal in 2004, when they lost to Greece first and brought in Deco, Miguel and Valente and went on to reach the final. GrantR
Remember the squad is still at 30 players, and 7 to be cut. I get the feeling one of Makelele or Vieira will be cut from the team, but wouldn't put it past Domenech to keep them both and dump Toulalan. Boumsong to go too surely. And i'd love to see Mandanda kept ahead of Landreau.
Administrators Philip Rolfe Posted May 19, 2008 Administrators Share Posted May 19, 2008 Coupet's about as good as Frey I reckon, more commanding and more experienced, Frey didn't impress on his France debut either. Diarra and Toulalan should be the two holding mids, that's not really contestable but it'll be at least Makelele and then someone else, Toulalan still has a good chance. He'll not be dumped, no chance. Your seven drops will be Mandanda (absolutely shocking he's being considered ahead of Lloris btw), Boumsong, Alou Diarra, Escudé, Flamini, Cissé and Gomis. Clerc might get dumped instead of Flamini if Domenech wants Lassana to be the right-back cover.
skybluedave
Benzema going to start? I really like Mexes, hope he starts. Everyone agree with dropping Trezeguet?
Administrators Philip Rolfe Posted May 19, 2008 Administrators Share Posted May 19, 2008 Benzema 50/50 to start, him or Anelka alongside Henry, both have proven to be good partners for him so it's likely a case of who impresses most in the friendlies. Trez is hard, he's done enough to get in but he'd not really be starting ahead of Benzema or Anelka. I'd like to see Benzema and Trez but not sure it'd work. Meitheisman
EPOUSTOUFLANT (Amazing) - 7 in a row is beyond my wildest dreams, especially considering that only 18 years ago we were still in the second division. I'm happy about Grenoble's promotion and PSG staying up too. For the French team although Trezeguet not being selected isn't a surprise it still is arguable and is widely debated in the French press. I like Rolfe's point about Trez not starting, it would probably be worse for the team to have him unhappy on the bench than in front of his TV set. Also, I think Cisse will make the team instead of Ben Arfa and Coupet is a better keeper than Frey imo. Fwiw I think Frey is actually 3rd keeper and Landreau 2nd. I agree that Thuram is past it, he barely played for Barcelona and we have plenty of young Center Backs but Thuram has 130+ selections (all-time leader). I hope he'll lose his starting position because he can still be a good influence in the locker room. If the latter happens then it wouldn't be a mistake to have him in the squad since he is a great leader and the young French players really look up to him. PS: There's a France thread in the Euro 2008 Forum. There

Gary Toner
PSG been far superior to Lyon in the first half. Unlucky not to be leading. Then again they are lucky not to be down to 10 men after Diane's challenge on Gouvou near the end of the half which would have resulted in a penalty. Offside PSG goal? Have to see it again.
