I just wanted to say that this is a really good read. They are as good as (if not better than) the old FM magazines!

Seriously, really enjoyed the read, especially the applying real-life tactics section (which i would like to see more of), the LLM section and the story about Inverness Metros.

I am always interested in reading about how other people play the game. My suggestions would be to have a regular LLM feature with stories about mediocrity in the lower leagues. I always like reading about hardcore FM gamers who have been stuck in the conference south for their whole career or who have never managed to win a single trophy in 20 years of playing etc! I also think that you should consider doing some more of the 'applying real life tactics' type of ideas. Also fascinating to read.

Anyway, to conclude, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the read - you really have something for everyone and it looks very professional. I am going to go and download the older editions that I have missed!

Cheers,

C.

You will be pleased to hear that we have another LLM article on the cards about one of our writers efforts.

Regarding the 'applying real life tactics' article, I would love to take the idea further, but there is a real lack of decent information available for free on the internet. No doubt there are some good books in existence and it is my birthday next month, so if anyone fancies buying me a present... icon_biggrin.gif

Seriously, if anyone can find any articles of the quality of the TalkFootball one then I am quite happy to do another installment.

playmaker- cheers for the response.

I understand what you're saying about the 'applying real life tactics' idea but what about attempting to set up like real life teams. You could pick famous examples, such as national teams, premiership sides or european champions league sides. Teams that we are all quite familiar with... then detail how their tactics translate in FM terms, singling out specific player instructions and detailing how the team approach the game, i.e. mentality, tempo, width, defensive line etc. And not just the attractive teams like Arsenal... what about sides who play more direct football and aren't known for their aesthetic approach to the game!

Just a thought but I for one would love to read more about that kind of thing. You can always learn a thing or two to implement in your own game.

I look forward to the LLM article. Like I say, I always enjoy a good story about a manager struggling in the lower leagues. icon14.gif

Top job guys - really great fanzine and some terrific writing as well. Sometimes this forum seems like a 'chav' zone with all its bad grammar, text speak and nonsense. I didn't realise there were people playing the game with an excellent grasp of the english language! Always nice to read intelligent views! icon_cool.gif

No promises, but I will give it some thought. I can see the potential for the idea, but it will take a fair bit of researching and testing. It's doubtful that I can put something together for the next issue, but I might put it on my list for issue 5.

The article about LLM has been written (first draft) and sent to the editors. As a disclaimer, I CANNOT claim to be a proper LLM. I don't play by the rules that they do.

But this is looking to be a chapter by chapter thing documenting my career game, the first chapter featuring three seasons in the Blue Square North. I won't say what team though. That'd spoil the surprise. icon_razz.gif

I honestly don't think it matters and I didn't even twig when reading it. I was too engrossed to notice whether everything was by the book.

80 pages and the layout appears to get better and better! Interesting articles too, as a non-English it's nice to see that The Bootroom covers more than just the Premiere League and its ilk. Hats off to you, guys.

There hasn't (to my knowledge) been a previous fanzine released in this format. As others will tell you, there was an official magazine, circa 2003 if I remember rightly, that didn't last too long.

There are still 3 issues of the Bootroom available for download though if you haven't read them all yet!

Features such as the player search allow you to find thousands of obscure players and view their attributes without ever seeing them play. If you want the ultimate realistic playing experience, then playing the LLM way is the only option, which means finding realistic alternatives to the player search.

Noticed this in the bit about LLM.

The player search now uses the clubs scouting knowledge, so its realistic enough to use it now.

Whether or not scouting knowledge is gained too easily is an issue itself.

I can certainly say that at my club, using the player search option, I didn't get many players to choose from. And I only ever looked at the free transfer list.

That low down who can afford a transfer fee anyway?

The articles for issue 4 were complete and proofed, but Chris who does the layouts had a lot of other things going on and no spare time. April and May were going to be combined, but I have heard nothing from Chris or Simon (the editor) since. I briefly considered whether I would take on more of the responsibility, but writing six or seven articles a month, plus proof reading all the articles submitted was more than enough, without taking on extra workload.

its a shame if this was the last issue, really enjoyed reading it tbh. i spose i could offer me services as a proof-reader, if thats all you're short of... dont really have much work on at the minute, so i'm here or hereabouts most days, except on weekends, as i have a weekend job as well....

I still think there is a place for The Bootroom, but it takes a mammoth effort every month to keep it going. Just to give people a heads up on what went in to the fanzine...

The proof reading is a mammoth task. For the last two issues (one unpublished) I was doing an hour or two every day - sometimes that meant starting at midnight if I didn't have time at lunchtime or during the evening. I think we ended up with around 23 articles last time of which 7 were my own. That meant 16 articles to read in a month (including verifying facts and making corrections/suggestions), on top of writing 1-2000 words every four days. And then there's research, running holiday games and recording stats and lots more.

Chris (who I think is a father by now) had to find four or five good quality images per article (surprisingly difficult) before laying out the text, adding captions and so on. It would take two to three weeks solid effort.

Simon chased up all the articles and got us published. Many people volunteered, very few delivered even one article. Simon wrote a lot of emails for the occasional reply.

I still think it is viable, but personally I don't think I could pick up the momentum again. In hindsight it took too much of my time and I have to keep the women in my life happy (one wife, one ridiculously enegergetic 14 month old).

I've been a massive fan of the issues so far and I also would be very sad to see it discontinued - there is nothing else remotely like it in terms of quality in any other fansite.

I also have the time and inclination to do any amount of proof-reading. FWIW I'm an English university professor and I do a lot of professional proof-reading (for a tidy income); I'd be more than happy to offer my services (for free of course) and could turn things around fairly quickly. :)

I'd like to second Phnompenhandy's words - the Bootroom has been an excellent read so far and long may it continue.

I'd also like to offer my services. I used to proof-read official documents in my old job when I worked for the civil service. I'm currently an English literature postgraduate student (not quite a university professor like Phnompenhandy, although it is my ambition to become a full-time academic). I'd also be happy to contribute if it would help because I think it is a wonderful fanzine and it will be sorely missed by the FM community if it disappears.

C.

P.S. Phnompenhandy, do you mind if I ask what your speciality in English is? Also what was the subject of your PhD? I'd be grateful for a PM if you have time.

Send a mail to betterspud (aka Simon) - his is the first post on this thread, so not too difficult to find. As I say, I have not spoken to him in a while, so I have no idea what his situation is currently or what his feeling on it are. The scale of it every month was very ambitious, so perhaps it needs scaling down or to go bi-monthly - I'm just thinking out loud really.

Layouts are still a big issue, if Chris is no longer in a position to do them then the whole thing is at an impass unless someone else wants to take it on.

Personally, I think the thing that made The Bootroom unique was that it was purely about the enjoyment of the game and not about 'journalistic duty', picking the game to pieces, or bad language. For me, the proof reading was as much about the tone and consistency of the fanzine as much as finding errors, but I'm sure you guys are more than capable.

Who knows, if you can help to get this going again, I may stay involved and put a couple of articles in.

Just throwing an idea here- why not carry on monthly and have two issues (it sounds like you have enough content for it). That means you can spread the formatting and design over 2 months.

Unfortunately I do not have indesign or the necessary skills to put the thing together... maybe somebody else on here can help share this task?

I don't have a Uni degree in English Lit, however I do work for a newspaper/ publication design company (in a marketing capacity, so I know the basics when it comes to proof reading, editorial deadlines, meeting etc)

Email bounced back, so I've tried PM. I've never used this forum's PM before, so I don't know if he'll check it, but I've tried.

Note my username/location. Here, university professor is a couple of notches up from kindergarten teacher ;). My Master's degree is in Buddhism; my specialism is World Religions/Buddhism, but I find myself teaching more English classes than anything else. I teach undergrad classes in academic writing and grammar as well as religion. I was teaching a Master's course in English Literature but all the students cheated so I got pi55ed off and quit.

Thanks for asking :)

Guys - Thanks for all your patience and support.

We have got a fair amount of material for the Fourth issue, I will be getting things together and I would hope that the next edition will be out soon.
