New Laptop/PC Advice -Please Read the Opening Post

Recommended Posts

I'm guessing for optimum performance a high end desktop will always be better than a high end laptop right? I'm looking at desktops with the 8700k in it but I can't find any under £1000. That's probably overkill for mostly FM. I currently have a Dell XPS 8500 which has an Intel i7 3770, it's around 6 years old. I bought that at the time just for FM too so you could say that it was overkill back then as well. My budget would be £1000 for a Desktop or Laptop, I could go higher if needed. It will mostly be for home use.

Dunno if I'm better off just getting the MSI Laptop posted on here, the one at £849 https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/msi-gl73-8rd-core-i7-8750h-8gb-1tb-128gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-150ti-17.3-inch-9s7-17c612-043/version.asp?refsource=LDadwords&refsource=ldadwords&mkwid=sOwnqMp1L_dm&pcrid=293734120249&product=9S7-17C612-043&pgrid=58524942203&ptaid=pla-467630036067&gclid=CjwKCAiA0ajgBRA4EiwA9gFOR0r9q6ttSt6PxKoTNf-t9HQSI85-3BibmPIRJPFoq-VKkuVD6Ay_SRoCooIQAvD_BwE

I'm looking to buy one that will last me a good 5-6 years like my current desktop has, so maybe overkill is necessary for that? I actually haven't played FM since FM17 and that ran fine on my PC. Maybe I won't need to upgrade at all. I'll have to check and see how it handles FM19 with around a 100k database.

Still, your recommendation would be welcome

MSI looks really good

Here's a PC build if you want to take a look - you'll need to have a monitor as it's not included.

The thing about this is you can upgrade the parts like graphics card etc at a later date. For FM the i5 8600k would be excellent.

Cheers mate. I reckon I'll just go for a desktop again then.

That looks a good build, I'll definitely consider it. I'm also considering building my own but not sure how hard/easy it is? Is PC Part Picker the best site to use for building one? If the price difference isn't much for near identical builds then I would rather it just get put together for me by one of those sites that do custom builds.

PC Specialist are custom built, you're paying a bit more but you do have it custom built by an expert.

There's a few, parts picker, scan.co.uk, overclockers, etc.

Nothing wrong with the laptop you picked for FM either.

Cheers mate. I'm wondering if it's worth going for the i7 8700k over the i5 8600k? Or even the new i7 9700k / i5 9600k?

Best you could probably do - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X540UA-DM564R-Asus-VivoBook-15-X540UA-DM564R_2366605.html

As per opening post, you would need to curtail your expectations for leagues loaded/database size etc - and in graphics detail level.

I can't see anything else - not even in refurb.

@Smurf I can also get an extra 10% off this through work (some e-mail landed Friday) is this any good https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-14-amd-ryzen-3-laptop-128-gb-ssd-black-10180974-pdt.html ?

Hello, I'm looking at getting a tablet or small compact laptop/notebook to run full version of FM19.  I've read on previous posts that the surface pro will run it ok. Is there anything of similar size that will run the game well??

For my job I have to fly alot which is why I'm after something compact.

I normally only use the English leagues and run a medium size database. 3d match engine is a must.

My price range would be £700 and under.

Any help would be massively appreciated as I'm not great with computer specs etc.

This would purely be used for football manager and nothing else.

Thanks alot

Best I can see with light weight/long battery/ and not too bad for FM https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/5ET23EAABU-HP-Pavilion-x360-14-cd1000na_2405978.html

It has a graphics card but it's not the best, and 3D matches would be best on low settings - when you go small form with these size laptops they are generally harder to get good graphics card unless you really up your budget.

Overall not bad.

Bit of a stupid, only half-relevant question here but didn't seem worth making a new thread for.

Pending a trip to the Apple Store, I may no longer have a fully functioning Mac. I bought all my FMs online, either through Steam directly or in the case of FM19 I bought a steam key online.

If I switch to Windows do I simply have to redone load Steam, or do I need to buy the game again?

You can play on any platform through your Steam account. Login, and download.

In terms of your playing games - you can back them up to a disk/usb or to the cloud and you can play them cross platform too.

Thanks very much smurf,

Any tablet you would recommend such as the surface pro or something similar?  I've seen on some threads that a Windows tablet could be used?

Thanks in advance

Again, tablets like Surface pro are much overpriced for what's under the hood.

I wouldn't recommend a tablet like the Surface Pro to play football manager. You can play on them - but they are expensive, and you'd be much better putting your money into a high end laptop for FM.

What is your actual budget? Is it £1,200?

Hi looking for your help as I'm not very tech savvy.  Will football manager 2019 work on the Microsoft Surface Go 10 Inch Pentium 4GB 64GB 2-in-1 Laptop. I'm looking to purchase 1 one and I'm hoping it's powerful enough to play FM19. The system info is CPU, Memory and Operating System:

Intel Pentium Dual core processor.4GB RAM.64GB eMMC storage.Microsoft Windows 10 S.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hey all,

looking for some advise on purchasing a desktop for FM19. I already have a monitor. My budget is between £600-£900, the desktop will be used to play FM19, Netflix, YouTube and if possible play Some of the latest games. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay so I have decided that for the first time I will go down the route of building my own PC, although I'm not sure if I will go for it now or wait another year or so as I've been testing out some database sizes on my current PC which is 6 years old but it still seems to run the game ok. It has a i7 3770(non k) CPU with 8GB RAM so it's still decent although not cutting edge anymore. It cost me around £650 at the time and that was mainly for FM.

The thing is, the build I'm looking at would cost almost £1300 which is double the cost, and it's also mainly for FM. Of course I would use it for other things like internet browsing, iTunes, YouTube etc but nothing major and no other games as I do most of my gaming on console. So I would need a good excuse to do it :p

Has anyone else on here spent anything near that amount for mainly just FM?

It's not that crazy at all and I typically spend upwards of that amount on computers.

I don't see the point in forking out £700 when you can get a lot better for £1400.

£700 is a lot of money - so is £1400 - and I'd rather spend it on something that does what I want and is fast enough.

Although my current laptop was a slapdash buy and I spent just under £1000 but it's good anyway.

Go for it - build away - if you have the money for it then do it.

Hi All,

I bought the computer below and it arrived today, before I unbox this thing and start playing I wanted to get some feedback as to wether or not it would run FM19 good to very good. I typically play 5 to 6 nations with a large database. Highlevel thoughts about this getting the job done more or less?

Yeah mate I suppose you're right. I tried loading all leagues on my current setup and unfortunately it was just a tad too slow. Not far off being acceptable for me but just missing the mark. I reckon a new processor (especially one I'm going to overclock this time) and far superior RAM will be enough to do it. Do you play any other games on your Laptop or is it just FM? I may end up dabbling in some other PC gaming although I've always been a console guy so I doubt it.

This is my build, let me know what you think:  https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/44MR6s

Things like the dearer Air Cooler and 650w PSU is because I plan to overclock and I've heard the new 9700k runs hot so wanted to give myself some headroom. Possibly unnecessary but I have selected RGB RAM, I could save some money otherwise but I'm a fan of the whole RGB stuff. I was also considering these: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/8KFXsY/corsair-ll120rgb-led-three-fans-with-lighting-node-pro-432-cfm-120mm-fans-co-9050072-ww but they are very pricey.

For the cooler the NH-D15S is getting great reviews from where I've read.

It looks like it would be good - but you should check out the list of single core best performance https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

I don't play any other games, not for the lack of wanting to, just don't have time these days after growing up and starting a family, games have taken a back seat.

I often forget what was being talked about. There are a few being helped on the go.

I simply forgot what specs you had selected and being on the mobile phone makes it harder to check back.

Alas it might help others who are reading the threads too. 😀

Hi Smurf.

just wanted some advice.  Currently play fm19 on my laptop, but purchased a surface go, and if poss would love to use that for fm.

the specs are as below.  Just wondered if it will play full fm and also touch.

thanks in advance

Not a chance will it play full FM, sorry, the processor is very poor and well below minimum requirements, and as the PC version of Touch has the same requirements, it won't play that either.

I often forget what was being talked about. There are a few being helped on the go.

I simply forgot what specs you had selected and being on the mobile phone makes it harder to check back.

Alas it might help others who are reading the threads too. 😀

Lol no worries.

Anyway thanks for your help, I'm going to go ahead with it and build a PC for the first time :)

Hi Smurf,

I am looking to buy a laptop basically just for FM and tiny bits of work stuff. I want one with the best graphics capability possible for £700 for the 3D match. Ignore my ignorance here please but all the skins that are made seem to always be made for 1920x1080 resolution.  Is this screen size?  Basically I want a laptop that will work with that resolution/size.

I have looked at the information on different graphics cards etc on this forum but it goes way over my head.  Just a recommendation on a solid machine available from usual UK outlets would be amazing.

Thanks as always

Hi all. finally upgrading to new laptop after nearly 7 years. use my laptop for FM and general music/web browsing/streaming etc.

Budget circa £800 but i can be tempted to stretch if really worth it/advisable.

on fm, i'm not that fussed by 3d, so would be a bonus if possible but i wont cry if i cant do it decently. i like running 9-10 leagues and as large a database as i can. key for me would be to buy something that should serve me for at least 4/5 years, although i appreciate that's hard to predict.

i've seen this https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J962-2073-MSI-GL62M-7RDX-2073UK_2418012.html

what do we think? can i do better?

thanks in advance.

If you can stretch to £712.99, I'd go with this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-i7-7700HQ-Graphics-Windows-7RD-833UK/dp/B0735FQVP6/ref=sr_1_12?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1545113076&sr=1-12&refinements=p_36%3A9708209031

Solid processor, decent graphics card, should do the job nicely.

That's really not a bad pick for a laptop, to be honest. The only ones I can find that have better processors than that one tend to only have 8GB RAM, and are about £100 more expensive.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07F32Y8G9/ref=psdc_429886031_t2_B07F94CFKV - better processor, same graphics, less RAM

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-179BC3-814-MSI-GP72MVR-7RFX(Leopard-Pro)-814UK_2263509.html - better processor, better graphics, less RAM

Overall, yea, I'd probably go with what you picked.

thanks both for your advice. that one is 8gb ram, i read your advice earlier on the thread saying 8gb is fine for fm, would you caution getting this one with lower ram and better processor with the option to upgrade the ram further down the line? upgrading ram is easy, no?

You can upgrade RAM but you can't upgrade the processor. 8gb is fine for fm and you can upgrade to faster ram and to 16gb ram in the future at relatively low cost.

Upgrading RAM doesn't break the warranty on the device either, however, if you were to try upgrade the processor it would likely void the warranty - and changing the processor in a laptop can be tricky.

thanks again - i've done some more searching and will probably plump for this as better processor and will be able to upgrade ram further down the line, and still within budget

good choice?

In terms of single-core processing ability (which is most important for FM), there isn't much difference at all between this one and the one Smurf posted, and the one Smurf posted had a slightly better graphics card too, and graphics cards are difficult to upgrade in a laptop too.

If you're mostly going for FM, but want to play some other, more graphically intensive games too, I'd probably still go with the one Smurf posted, and spend the difference in money on getting an extra 8GB RAM to add into it.

That's true, so where the single-core performance are almost identical, I'll plump for the one with more overall power and newer generation, plus the additional better graphics card all for the same price as the other one, seems like a better deal to me.

Adding more RAM at a later stage would be recommeneded. If you're doing that, make sure you get the exact same type of ram and exact same speed of RAM. You will find this info in the eBrochure that usually comes with computers these days, or by checking your serial number online with the vendor.

hey @Smurf this is unrelated to FM but I don't know anyone else I could ask for advice! My Wife's laptops has died, just as she's started her big essay for her Masters Degree - is there a laptop you'd recommend just for Word Processing & internet browsing, under a budget of £300? Very unlikely to be used for gaming, might be used for netflix or something similar.

thanks!
