New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

I don't know much when it comes to computers but what I want is to use it for general browsing the web and FM. I want to play with 5 countries' leagues (England, Italy, Germany, Spain and France. Don't know how many players that is) in 3D. But I don't mind playing 2D if £500 is too low considering I want the computer to last quite long.  Is the MSI overkill for my demands?

Also what are the differences between the MSI and the Lenovo?

I would go up to £600 if the MSI is needed for my demands.

Hello everybody and nice to join the community!

First of all I want to say thank you to all with the generous information offered in this really well written thread.

Now as much as I will seem the usual suspect with his boring request me too aswell would like to hear a configuration help from Smurf if he could as me myself I'm pretty much useless with laptops, computers,,etc.

So if you could help Smurf it would be great and here are my specific requests:

-pure gaming laptop,no other use than maybe a few movies here and there.

-I play FM with as many leagues as possible and generally have all the possible leagues ticked for the main leagues(France,Spain,England,Germany,Italy, etc) and even some lower leagues from other countries(say Holland or Portugal). My database is huge, this is my main point I want to reiterate since I want my FM experience to be as real as possible.

-I desperately need to play in 3D view,I can't put up with that 2 D view with bottle caps playing each other anymore. So I need to see everything from Ibra's big nose to Djibril Cisse's tattoos. So I imagine a powerful graphic card is needed, but which one?

-Now I am from Romania so I cant order from UK or any other sites from here but I can get the exact same model if you recomend me one to buy or just recomend every piece on it.

-I would like one with a mouse if possible.Do they all have one? No?Noob here.

-Other thing is I see most gaming laptops here have a integrated graphic processor(or is that the card?Or same thing?) so that means it can't be upgraded, its a one and done. So it needs to be elite because I don't plan on buying another laptop for at least 5 years so I will want to run FM 17,18,19,20,etc on it in 3D with all leagues on it for years to come. This is to be kept in mind I think.

That's pretty much it I guess.

Budget:around 1000 euros.

The MSI would definitely suit you.

Thank you for reply Smurf, you're an ace.

I just said Euros because  I thought it would better suit the international appeal of the whole setting.

I'm not really planning on ordering from a UK site since I imagine  I would have to pay customs and dispatch taxes.I imagine getting it from here and actually seeing it and trying it pre buying would be best.I hope I''ll find a computer wiz guy that could help me after with installing everything and such.

Also something I didn't mention is CD-ROMs.I understand most laptops don't have one so a portable one would be necessary.Does the model you suggested have a CD-ROM?

I ask because I bought the game and it says it's from PC,Linux and Mac so I don't know if the CD wil lactually work on the laptop?

If not which is a good portable CD-ROM(also in case the laptop integrated CD-ROM is damaged in time)?

Another thing is  I read FM17 does not run well on Windows 10 which most seem to have preisntalled(like the one you suggest),is this true?

So the suggestion you ahve I imagine is an elite system yes?No problem running a large databse with 3d?

The PC specialist doesn't have a CD/DVD player - but you can order separate.

The MSI does.

The game disc, as far as I know, has installation for all PC, LInux and Mac. However, I may be wrong on that.

Most portable CD/DVD roms will be fine.

FM runs perfectly fine on Windows 10.

Thanks.Like I said I'm a noob as far computer thingy goes. Are PC,Linux nad Mac considered laptops(or one of them is)?I imagine Mac is laptop yes?

I think I''ll look for the MSI one or something similar.Cheers then.

Also is the graphic card of GTX 960 M enough for the future?I read the numbers there must be as big as possible ofr a stronger graphic card so there are grahic cards with more then 960 M?Like over 1000?Would this be a problem for the future?I imagine not.

But would a decent graphic card say cause problems in the future, like for FM 20 lets say/

Also what do you think about this one(found it after a quick search):

Hi,

i look for a Laptop in a range from 600-900€. I use the Laptop mostly for Football Manager, my work and some Hearthstone. Atm im still running with my Thinkpad T400 with Core2Duo, so im really at a point where i need a new one.

I would love if the new Laptop is able to do the things above and maybe run Pillars of Eternity and Europa Universalis. Also i would love a Laptop which isnt to loud.

Can somebody suggest me some Laptops? (maybe Smurf <3 ) Thank you for your help in advance!

Nobody knows what's in store down the line for football manager. The graphics are quite rudimentary and basic, and given the talk over the years on the forums, there's no plans to make them like FIFA/PES etc. However, you never know.

The graphics card in the one you posted  is a GTX1050 - and it can run better under certain cooling conditions, but usually runs about the same performace as a 965m.

With FM things will get hot under the hood, so it's hard to know if a 1050GTX will give you any advantage.

Other than that it's pretty good and I'd recommend that one if you like it then go for it.

N-ai pentru ce.

Take a look here, at the 3'rd post:

https://www.mygarage.ro/laptop-mini-laptop/367061-laptop-4000-lei.html

And you won't need another 8 GB/RAM for your gaming needs.

OK,so SSD is needed for systems, programs and such but its size is very small compared to HDD but much more expensive per size length.

Interesting,so then a laptop woth SSD and HDD is needed I guess.I saw there are such systems.

There's varying reports around, some people think the SSD helps for FM - some don't.

I have no opinion - however, the SSD is a superior hard drive, it's a lot faster than a normal Hard Drive.

Definitely for longevity, and future development of the game - I can only imagine SSD will be in every computer in a few years time - and FM would be wise to somehow make it better over SSD - if it's not already the case.

So a SSD+HDD at least is necessary if not a full SSD.

But in the same time a integral SSD memory seems a waste-for lets say only 128 GB-its really a small quantity to work with.

A TB of HDD is helpful in some other aspect so a hybrid is ok for now.1 TB + 128 GB I think is enough.

Yes that would be plenty.

Install the operating system on the SSD and install Football Manager on the SSD.

You can store other things like photos, music, movies, etc. on the HDD.

You could add them all if you wanted. Unfortunately the answer to this question is always however many you find is enough before the game becomes too slow for your personal preference, what I consider just fast enough could be disappointingly slow or enough time for another league for you.

Looking to buy a new laptop, but sadly budget is limited.

I tend to load a fair few leagues and players (about 15 and 60,000 respectively) but never use the 3D Match Engine. Gotten too used to the 2D Classic :D

Does anyone have an idea of the minimum recommended specs to play at this level without too much bother?

Would be much appreciated, thanks :)

Is this an honest site? Each game including FM claims my device is underpowered. For some high end Simulators like Train Sim World it might be but FM has a whole range of settings you can tailor to your device. And I have had no issues even with 100,00, + loaded leagues and good graphic settings.

When it fails it links you to a site selling ''Ideal'' products for each game.

It's really down to your budget - if you have £200 to spend you won't get a whole lot - if you have £2000 to spend then you can probably do whatever you want.

Nobody can tell you how many leagues it can run - however, it's not a bad laptop

- probably too much RAM - you could cut that back to 8gb RAM

- the hard drive is the slowest at 5400rpm

What's your budget - and where are you buying from? There might be a better deal out there.

For £275 don't expect miracles.

But a minimum of £275? Do you mean maximum? If you're minimum is £275 - surely then £0.01 is your minimum?

Anyway - I fear it won't be enough. I suggest you save a little bit longer. Put that £275 away and add £5 to it every week for 6 months.

Hi lads,

Does this HP Omen model provide good value for the money spent?

https://www.tesco.com/direct/hp-15-ax200na-omen-156-intel-i7-7700hq-8gb-ddr4-ram-256gb-ssd-gtx-1050-full-hd-shadow-mesh-gaming-laptop/152-6599.prd?skuId=152-6599&pageLevel=sku&sc_cmp=ppc*PX+-+DNF+Electrical*PX+-+Shopping+GSC+-+Generic+-+Computing*PRODUCT+GROUP152-6599*&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4OiivoHB1QIVhJ3tCh0S6QFIEAQYBSABEgLZovD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&source=others

I've been looking at various models of the Omen and that looks to be the cheapest one that still has i7.

I see this model is priced slightly higher but I'm not exactly sure why when comparing them.

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hp-omen-15-ax208na-core-i7-7700hq-8gb-1tb-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-1050-2gb-1jl21ea/version.asp#/specs

Would be willing to spend up to £1200 ish if there is better value to be found. Would be looking for something that is not likely to need updating for a few years and will run FM fairly smoothly with quite a deep DB.

Cheers.

Looks like the more expensive one has an additional 1TB drive -which is handy for storage.

256gb is loads of space for FM and Windows - if you wanted to go the cheaper laptop - then later on you can buy an external drive to store music/movies on.

Or go for the more expensive one and keep all your stuff on the laptop.

This one is slightly cheaper https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J942-011-MSI-GP62-7RD(Leopard)-011UK_2066572.html - however, there are some concerns over battery life in the MSI - meaning having it plugged in is recommended.

Either you found is more than enough for FM.

However - with your budget - I'd recommend going custom build

Hi,

I've not played FM on a laptop for around five years. Got the bug back over the last six months on FM17 touch on my iPad. Looking at getting a laptop secondhand solely for FM. What is it that I should prioritise when looking for something? My budget will be small £50-100. Or any models that I should be looking at.

As I haven't played in a while not sure what my preferences would be but probably quite a few leagues with a fairly large database.

Any advice would be appreciated or if anyone is selling something that matches then let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys

Irrelevant of budget what would you recommend, considering all of the below wish list of wants and needs:

* Best for being Lightweight & Size (compact) - ideally < or = to 15" screen....

* Best at not running hot under load (not burning my lap when playing)

* Best for Graphics on 3d Match Engine -(Nvidea graphics card etc)

* Running Many Leagues

* SSD Drive

* Minimum 16GB

* Best possible i7 Chip

Having looked what's out there myself the Gigabyte Aero 14 below looks the best out there... but would anyone else have any thoughts as to what might be better???

AERO 14 (i7-7700HQ) 14"

  • Only 19.9mm Slim, 1.89kg Lightweight
  • Unique Aesthetics with All Aluminum Robust Body
  • Slim and Light Adapter with USB Charging Port

  • Blazing-fast M.2 PCIe Gen3 X4 SSD: Reach 2000MB/s (optional)
  • USB 3.1 Type-C: 10Gbps / 5V 3A
  • HDMI 2.0: Ultra HD 4K 60Hz Output
  • DDR4 2400MHz – Up to 32GB
  • Dolby Digital Plus™: Surround Sound Anywhere, Everywhere

Thanks for any suggestions in advance

I'd recommend looking at PC Specialist

Hard to know - it would depend on casing and position of processor, plus cooling system.

A laptop cooler works really well and are quite cheap.

The graphics aren't really that intense, but for longevity go for the best on the market.

And stump up the extra 10£ for the extra ram.

That being said it's the 50-100 range you originally mentioned.

I can maybe stretch a bit more. Would the other two work or not good enough?

Just for my reference

Hello all,

I don't know very much about computers but my game always runs slowly, I like to have lots of leagues and players as well use 3D. I have attached my processors Giga hertz speed and RAM which I thought was good for FM. Can someone please explain where improvements could be made? I am going to buy a new laptop for FM 18. I've seen laptops listed in this thread with lower GHz than my comp, very confusing. BuT my game runs so so slowly, can take a day to get through a month of game.

thank you very much in advance.

You should focus on getting a laptop with atleast Intel i5 (quad core processor) and 8 GB of ram. This one for example is quiet good: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.GP8AA.007

Or if you have the money, buy a ASUS Republic of Gaming. All depends on the money you want to spend.

A few things to address - your computer is somewhere around 2009 in date of your operating system is quite early - it's about 8 years old.

Your CPU is a Pentium J2900 - which was launched in 2013 - so it means your laptop is roughly 4 years old - which for me signals end of life.

It certainly meets minimum requirements.

Your RAM is only 4gb - and both Windows and Football Manager require 2gb ram each to run - which means betweens Windows and FM most of your RAM is being used up by 2 things, your Operating System Windows and Football Manager.

Now - your processor can handle up to 8gb RAM - I would highly recommend that you up your RAM in your current laptop - which should be relatively cheap.

You RAM type for this model is DDR3L 1333 -  something like this - http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct102464bf160b - however, ensure you contact the vendor and give them your computer specs to ensure you receive the correct model.

It doesn't seem like you have a graphics card - which means the processor is also trying to handle this - and if you're playing 3D matches you must do on the lowest quality with all the background turned off - else don't play 3d matches.

You can certainly get a decent computer to play FM - please let us know your budget!
