New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Hey guys and the very helpful Smurf. I'm looking for a new laptop to play FM and use MS Word now and again. I don't need to load more than a few leagues from 3-5 nations, like English Prem down to League 1, La Liga and Segunda, Serie A, B and C with players from maybe Brazil. I tend to play in 2D mode now.

I want something reliable, fairly quick and ideally quite lightweight, that will stand the test of time better than most laptops (I know this is hard to predict so no worries if you can't help on this) and not overheat too much.

Budget around £400-600.

Would a Sony Vaio, like this be any good? https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SVE15115FXS-15-5-Inch-i5-3210M-Processor/dp/B0080C21Y8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499939713&sr=1-1&keywords=sony+vaio+laptop+i5

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's quite an old processor (generation 3 - it's 4 behind as it's now on gen 7)

This is best laptop I can find for £600

The amazon site wasn't really loading well to me - apologies if you're not in the UK/Ireland/Europe.

Okay, mate. I have checked out the MSI laptop before, after your recommendation, and it looks decent. I'm gonna put that at the top of my list and get it, unless anything comes up on the outside late on so to speak :) Thanks for your help.  If you ever fancy writing a blog post about good FM laptops for my site, fmscrapbook.com, that would be awesome!

Hi all

I am looking at a new laptop as my other is old and knackered, I have seen a couple which i think would be good, but i have limited knowledge on this kind of thing!!! Could some one please give me their opinion on my choices, which are:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-13-5000-13-3-2-in-1-silver-10161991-pdt.html

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-au150sa-15-6-laptop-white-10156898-pdt.html

Are these two any good for FM and normal everyday uses, i only really surf web and play music on mine other than playing FM.

Thanks

I'd like to know too. The Omen looks pretty sexy.

It's impossible to tell - as the johnlewis one doesn't give the i5's processor number. It just says i5 and no other information. However, it looks good. If you can find out the processor I can do a bit more research.

*Edit - Sorry - I don't know how I missed it - it has a i5-7300HQ same as MSI.

Therefore they're both near identical, the HP has a slightly better Graphics Card - if you're into 3D view mode for matches - both are quite good, but HPs is slightly better.

The MSI has a SSD - which the HP Omen doesn't seem to have.

Whether the SSD has any impact on FM is unknown for me, some report has having been good, and some report zero improvement.

I'd be pushed to pick between the 2 - perhaps the Omen as it has a slightly better grpahics card - it has no SSD however, if FM did utilise this in the future, you could purchase an SSD and replace the current hard drive at a later stage.

It's a tough one - either are good.

Out of the 2 the 2nd one is the best - however, one is a 13 inch and the other is a 15 inch screen.

Considering the 2nd one - it's nowhere near as good as the MSI linked above for just under £600

You'll be fine if you keep the league count to the level you've mentioned & stick to the default small database option. 3D graphics will likely be smoothest on low settings, at the very least turn off Sky, outside scenery & supporters then play around with the on pitch settings.

This one

  • GeForce GTX 1050 2GB Graphics card
  • 15.6 inch Screen size
  • Intel Core i7 Processor
  • 8GB RAM
  • Windows 10
  • £799.97

Just a quick note to say that I went with this one in the end and fired a new save up on it this weekend! It's already noticeably faster than I've had previously so early signs are good!

The graphics card is low end - which won't be great for 3D matches - at least play on low settings. The graphics card might be able to be upgraded, if it's not integrated to the motherboard, I'll have to look into that a bit more - but seems like it would upgrade - but you may need to upgrade the PSU too - best to bring to a shop to get this done for you if you decided to get a better graphics card.

But it's a desktop computer, not a laptop - so you'll need to have a monitor already, or buy a monitor.

Other than that it looks good.

Hey Guys i've been waiting to buy a laptop and have followed this page for a while.  I know the msi gp62(no ips panel tho) seems popular i'm considering getting that or ge62 or the acer vx15

The acer has a 15% sale and is £850 atm

I found an alternative version of the MSI laptop that @Smurf has been recommending. No SSD, but just under £600.

http://www.ebuyer.com/770451-msi-gl62-7qf-gaming-laptop-backpack-9s7-16j562-1672

  • Intel Kabylake Core i5-7300HQ 2.5GHz
  • 8GB RAM + 1TB HDD
  • 15.6" Full HD + DVDRW
  • NVIDIA GTX960M 2GB
  • WIFI + Windows 10 Home

I was going to get the Stormforce that @Barside recommended me a few pages back. However, my current laptop's still just about hanging on, and i've been paying off my season ticket for next season before i make the jump (next month). Currently got the MSI above and the HP Omen at John Lewis in my sights.

Ok I see where you're going - I'm currently writing an article on this sort of buying and I see that you have £1000 to play with.

The Aspire and the MSI Apache are the best choice here. But is it the best price?

It's not - just because you have £1000 to spend doesn't mean it all has to spent - and you can actually do a similar laptop for about £200 cheaper.

Reading this with interest as I'm going to get a new laptop in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for all the input Smurf.

I'm wondering, is the £200 more for the one you've just posted: https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J942-011-MSI-GP62-7RD(Leopard)-011UK_2066572.html worth paying ahead of the previous MSI one: https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2066567.html

Ideally £600 is a good amount to spend, but I can pay £800 if it has better longevity. I'm not a heavy PC gamer at all, so would like it to last several years of FM and perhaps some other games in that time as well. I have PS4 for actual gaming, just looking for a good laptop to last a while really.

Any advice would be great e.g. is the gfx card much better on the more expensive one, and what's the improvement in i7 compared with i5?

Cheers

To be honest - if you wanted to save yourself and go for the £600 version - then go for it - it's perfectly good with football manager in mind.

The main difference between the 2 is the 800 has a slightly better processor - but it's not a million miles better or anything - and the 800 has a slightly better graphics card.

But the 600 laptop would be perfectly capable for football manager.

It's up to you.

The PC I'm playing FM on was bought in 2012 - and it as 211gb used space with 365gb free.

I also use this PC for graphic design, and have fairly hefty programmes on it, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. along with all my project files and all that for clients

I bought a 64gb USB3 stick for about £20 - this one actually - https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/USB-Flash-Drives/SanDisk-Ultra-USB-Flash-Drive/B00DQGBYDC/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1500745015&sr=1-2&keywords=usb3+stick

If you feel you need more hard drive space then go for the on with more hard drive space.

Genuinely, I don't think you'll need it.

Thanks Smurf, it seems that MSIs have awful battery life?  It's a good idea doing a article like that so u can point people towards it instead of explaining it all the time and i would also like to read what you have to say. Keep up the good work!

It will be fine for FM.

3D might be a bit of a struggle, but you can lower the settings and turn off a few things there but it should be fine.

Again - download a demo of the game and see if you're happy with it.

Hi guys still not bought new laptop, I nearly bought the MSI that smurf recommends but I can get this one for £500 which is really my budget.

i only play one league English, says the processor is 2.9 ghz.

Could I run a databse with 60k players with this?

Processor: 2.20GHz AMD A8-7410 processor

memory : 8GB DDR3L RAM

Storage: 1 TB

Graphics: AMD R16M-M1-30 2GB Graphics

I'm going to be perfectly honest here -

You can run FM on any computer and load as many players/leagues/databases as you like.

The whole thing is that your quality of play will suffer, as it will be slow and it will be exhausting.

That being said - it's barely reaching the minimum requirements for the processor - therefore I don't think you should be loading more than 3-5 leagues with a small or medium database.

But again - it's impossible to know how many leagues/players/database size etc. by the mere specs. If you want to load up all the leagues, large database and all that and trudge day to day on a Save then that's up to you.

You can load all leagues on any laptop/computer and it will run slow - or you can load 1 league and 1 division and a small database and it will run really fast - it's all about you finding a balance for game play that you're happy with.

If you only play 1 league English then it's fine - probably overkill.

If you play 3D then it might struggle - perhaps on play on low detail with a few things switched off.

@smurf thanks so much for all your help. It's annoying as I want to get a laptop to play fm don't want to spend a fortune but other than yourself I'm not sure how to get best advice on world were not very helpful. From what I have read an I-5 processor is the way forward and having booked a wedding for next year I can't really justify more than £450 max £500.

Just looking at the website you recommended the MSI on with your knowledge how would this be with one league medium database? Not overly fussed with graphics.

thanks again

Can the MSI handle 3D matches? And is there anything cheaper than it that can handle 3D matches whilst not being slow? Also where is the MSI better than the Lenovo Ideapad if the Lenovo can play 3D matches?

Link to post

All laptops can play 3D matches - to some degree. It's just that some have better graphics cards than others and you have have the detail turned up, with all the background elements etc.

What's your budget and what's your expectations, for leagues/database size/3D etc.
