OFL (Oceania Football League) - The Game Thread

v2 - see here for 2009's version

ofc.jpg

Only one of the 31 Oceanic nations or dependancies, Vanuatu, lists Association Football as its national sport. For this reason, the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) have decided that an Oceanic football league would be a good way of promoting the sport in the world's smallest continent. As well as the 11 FIFA-registered Oceania nations, who will each provide three teams, Oceanic countries Australia, Guam and Northern Mariana, all of whom are registered with the Asian Football Confederation, have been invited to each field a team in the league. This gives a total of 36 sides, and FIFA's idea is to create two leagues of 18 teams, where at the end of each season, 2 teams are relegated and promoted automatically, and two more from each division take part in a promotion/relegation playoff.

The overall aim is not purely to succeed in the league, but to bring players through and provide success for the national sides and promote the sport. Therefore the OFC ask that instead of the 3 clubs from each nation becoming rivals of one another, they work together to bring success to their country.

THE LEAGUES

FIFA has split the 36 teams into two 18-division leagues - the Oceania Football League, and Oceania Football Conference. The draw was made randomly and fairly, but try telling that to Samoa and Vanuatu, who both saw all three of their teams in the second division. On the other hand, with all three teams in the top flight, Papua New Guinea are understandably delighted. The full list of teams in their respective divisions is shown below:

FIFA has decided, for the first term of four seasons, to appoint the chairman of the highest achieving side of each nation as that nation's representative in their corresponding federation. This will be announced at the end of the maiden OFL season, along with the vote for the new head of the OFL Clubs' Committee.

36 very capable managers have been trained and appointed for each of the sides. The highest CA and PA of 191 and 195 respectively are accredited to the same boss, but the low PA (100) has a higher CA than the lowest (65). As can be seen, there is a large range here.

The first update will be coming along in the next few hours, once the first season is complete and we have some real meat on the bones of this sign-up.

SEASON 2010/11

logo-ofc-100.gif

LEAGUE COMPETITIONS

OCEANIA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

OFL.png

In the first ever season of the brand new Oceania Football League, it was New Caledonia and Le Mont-Doré United who triumphed, in a tight battle at the top with a host of teams. If Guam's Guamtanamera FC had managed not to concede late on in their final-day 1-0 loss to 6th placed Western Island FC then the title would have been theirs. However, in placing second, they still qualify for the coming season's Oceania Champions League, along with the league winners and fourth placed Forest Rangers SC of Papua New Guinea. More on the reason for this later. Down at the wrong end of the table, less good news for Papua New Guinea, with New Ireland Headhunters going down with Tahiti's Papara FC. The two sides were fairly well clear of safety in the end, and it was a relegation neither could be too aggrieved with. Both relegation playoff matches went the way of the top-flight sides, so Avarua United and Honiara Miners both live to fight another day.

OCEANIA FOOTBALL CONFERENCE

OFC.png

Port Vila Cyclones ensured that Vanuatu would have their first representative side in the top flight for the next season, after an impressive season which resulted in their capture of the Oceania Football Conference League title. It was harsh luck though to another Vanuatan side, Sulphur Bay Sharks, after they lost out in the relegation/promotion playoff, along with Samoa's Vaivase-tai. As well as wrapping up the top flight title, another New Caledonian side, Noumeá Nouyua Aha brought more success to the French territory nation by securing themselves promotion. It can be said that FC Amuri of the Cook Islands were the strongest side in Oceania this season - as they sat at the bottom of the table, propping up the other 35 teams. Not a campaign they will be itching to repeat next time around.

SEASON 2010/11

logo-ofc-100.gif

OCEANIA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

FINAL

OCL.png

Defying the odds, two of three OFL clubs in the competition made the final. Forest Rangers SC of Papua New Guinea lost out in the first round to Honiara Premiership outfit Makuru FC, but after finishing fourth in the OFL, gained a reprieve. They will be playing in the competition again next season after the team placing third in the OFL managed to win the Champions League. Auckland FC had their Argentine duo to thank for the title; Cristian Fabbiani scoring two beautiful goals, and Ezequiel Gonzalez making three assists and putting in a man of the match performance. Tongatapu United did really well to reach the final, but despite this, the Tongan outfit were new match for the New Zealanders in the final in Fiji.

INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

OLYMPICS QUALIFICATION

OlympicsGroups.png

OlympicsQualFinal.png

New Zealand were always the favourites to qualify, but even after just the one season, the benefits of the OFL in creating a far more competitive footballing continent is clear to see - the fact that every team managed at least one victory is testament to this. The Kiwis couldn't even make the qualification final, with Papua New Guinea winning their group. It is worth noting the absence of Tahiti and New Caledonia here: in the Olympics, they are considered a part of France, and so are not eligible for the competition. In the other group, Tonga squeezed through a tight battle, and defeated New Zealand's conquerors Papua New Guinea in the final.

So, unbelievably, Tonga are going to have a representative football team at the Olympic games in London in 2012! I'm sure the tiny island nation will look forward to that.

FIFA has announced the first 11 representatives for their countries:

American Samoa - Nick Clements (Emurica FC)
Cook Islands - Henry Clapham (Avarua United)
Fiji - Joinah Fiji Revolcina (Pineapple Express FC)
New Caledonia - Harry Herman (Le Mont-Doré United)
New Zealand - David Ginsberg (Auckland FC)
Papua New Guinea - Gareth-Jean Devereux (Forest Rangers SC)
Samoa - Cristian Sirera (Los Expatriados)
Solomon Islands - Stanley Tawali (Western Island FC)
Tahiti - President Koko (FC Koko)
Tonga - Adam Wilkinson (Tongatapu United)
Vanuatu - Amit Patel (Port Vila Cyclones)

One of these 11 chairmen will go on to head the new OFL Clubs' Committee, and this will be voted on by all 36 chairmen (including those of the clubs from Australia, Guam and Northern Mariana). The one of the eleven with the most votes will win, and in case of a tie straws will be drawn. You are permitted and encouraged to vote for the chairman representing your nation, and indeed for yourself if you are one of the eleven. Indeed, if you do not vote for yourself, you are not eligible for the position. The votes of the three Asian-based chairmen could prove vital, as they are the only potential voters who do not have vested interests.

To vote, just send me a PM with the name of the chairman or club you wish to elect. Voting is not mandatory (unless you are one of the above eleven and wish to take the position). You have 15 hours in which to vote, starting from now.

Okay, so at this time, here is what you're entitled to do as a Federation representative for your nation:

Through challenges:

- Increase Rep

- Increase Importance

- Increase Development

- Increase Economy

- Improve Stadium

- Donate money to clubs (not necessarily own, can be split)

At end of each season you will have the opportunity to:

- Sack/hire staff at will (must be unemployed)

- Change team kits/colours

The OFL Clubs' Committee Chief may also:

- Organise a youth tournament for scouting players (once per term - these players can then be picked up by any clubs)

- Achieve boost for their affiliated nation by attending international footballing events

The first 'challenge' to earn the opportunity to improve your nation's footballing prowess will be held after the next season update, which should be due later today.

Very happy to represent the Soloman Islands and am delighted with our position and hope we can push for the Champions League next season. The only dissappointment is that we didn't qualify for the Olympics, howver we must work on this and good luck to Tonga for their campaign in London. I must also say I am relieved that the Hoinara Miners managed to survive in this division as their continued participation, along with the hopefully future promotion of Irea FCN, is what will drive the Soloman Islands forward. Finally, congratulations to all the other representatives and Harry Herman who I know will work their very hardest to improve Oceana's standing in the world stage.

Congratulations to Harry for securing the position as leader of the OFL Club's Committee. I'm pleased that Vanuatu made it to the Olympics and we managed to secure joint 2nd in the Group B table. And i'm pleased that we have an excellent youth player on our hands as the 16-year old Tony Obed managed to become the joint 4th best OFL Player by the CA. Hopefully Jason Isara will be a very good signing for us and I have the upmost confidence in him helping the club to success. And finally I'm pleased that the manager of the Cyclones helped our club secure the Conference title and help secure Vanuatu it's first season in the top flight. Onwards and upwards not just for Port Vila, but for Vanuatu and OFL!

SEASON 2011/12

LEAGUE COMPETITIONS

OCEANIA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

OFL-1.png

In what was undoubtedly a busy season for New Caledonian based champions Le Mont-Doré United, the league holders were unable to defend their title amid a huge onslaught of competition. Last season's third placed side Auckland FC had a fantastic season, winning the title by a massive 11 points. The runners-up from last time about were Guamtanamera FC, but the Guam side bore no resemblance to the side from their previous campaign, going down without so little as a whimper. Canterbury FC of Fiji and newly promoted Nouméa Nouyua Aha, another side from New Caledonia, were the sides who grabbed the other two Champions League spots. Down at the wrong end of the table, Tongatapu FC found themselves joining Guamtanamera in the relegation zone, much to the delight of United fans. AC Thunderstruck of New Zealand and Champions League contenders Forest Rangers SC, from Papua New Guinea, found themselves in the relegation playoff. Despite being four points ahead of the Kiwis, the latter were the side that lost out and saw themselves relegated. With two out of the three sides succumbing to the drop playing amongst Oceania's elite in the Champions League that same season, could this be a curse which continues?

OCEANIA FOOTBALL CONFERENCE

OFC-1.png

Let's start with the season's big movers - FC Amuri of the Cook Islands didn't finish bottom! Yes, they're only a place and a point clear, but still, they're moving in the right direction.. Right? Onto less trivial matters, and Samoans Vaivase-tai win the division by a margin almost as impressive as Auckland FC in the league above them. As one of the eight teams currently in Oceania Football Confederation care, could they be the first side taken over by another businessman since the start of the OFL? Joining them in promotion are New Zealand's Auckland Wanderers, ensuring we now have a trio of Kiwis in the top flight. Papua New Guineans New Ireland Headhunters bounce straight back up after relegation last time about, at the expense of their compatriots Forest Rangers, who lost out in the playoffs.

OCEANIA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

FINAL

OCL-1.png

Again, it was two OFL clubs in the final, with last season's OFL winners Le Mont-Doré United defeated this season's OFL losers Guamtanamera FC in a very tight final. Less tight was Le Mont-Doré's dispatch of Forest Rangers SC in the semi-final - a 6-2 aggregate defeat ending the Papua New Guineans' disappointing season in yet more disappointment. The shock of the tournament was at the expense of reigning champions Auckland FC, who fell at the first hurdle - losing 3-2 on aggregate to Canterbury United Dragons in the first round.

INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

2012 OLYMPICS

Olympics.png

It probably couldn't have been a better draw for Tonga. Sure, they have little to no hope of advancing through the group, but they have three dream matches against three of the greatest footballing nations of all time. Just weeks to go until the little island nation is thrust into the spotlight in a way that they never have been before.

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING

WCQuals.png

New Zealand currently lead, and with two games left to go, are strong favourites to make it into the Asia-Oceania playoff for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. Mathematically, any one of the four teams could still qualify, but it is looking less and less likely. New Zealand are far from invincible in Oceania now though, as the last couple of years have proven, and this could potentially inspire one of the minnows to glory.

OCE NATIONS CUP

OCENationsGroups.png

OCENationsLeague.png

OCENationsFinal.png

Yet more surprises in Oceania international football is clear to see here as New Zealand, for the first time since Australia became affiliated with Asia, failed to make the final of the OCE Nations Cup. One might say that they are more focused on World Cup Qualification, and that this tournament doesn't really mean a lot, but tell that to American Samoa and Papua New Guinea, who fought a very entertaining final with the American Samoans prevailing. That means that Papua New Guinea have a record of two finals, two losses in the new-look Oceania footballing setup. A promising start for them, but something that they hope will not continue much longer.

I'm pleased that we have finished in 6th place in the top flight in our first season since winning the Conference. It's disappointing that Vanuatu hasn't had a successful season internationally but i'm pleased that Port Vila is helping Vanuatu rise throught the ranks of the OFL.

(how many of our respective national teams are part of our squads, may i ask?)

Good question - All but two of the 11 Oceania teams have squads fully made up of OFL and OFC players. Samoa have one player at Stoke City, as you probably noticed, and New Zealand have three players in England (West Ham, West Brom and Ipswich) and one unattached player (Ryan Nelson). Guam and Northern Mariana have squads made up of about 60% regens (all OFL and OFC) and 40% greyed-out players, while Australia have a squad assembled from here, there and everywhere.

CHALLENGE #1 - SCOUTING

GuessCA.png

Many owners these days think that they should be the manager, selecting the teams, choosing the tactics, and earning the plaudits. Many also seem to think that they are the kings of the transfer markets, and should be the ones bringing in marvelous talents for shoestring fees. Or not so shoestring, as is often the case. Well - now is the time to test their mettle. Above is pictured a Vanuatan international footballer. Maki Gerard Malessas is a goalkeeper, who plays for last season's Conference winners Port Vila Cyclones and his international side. He is renowned as a fairly respectable goalkeeper at his level, but can the 36 chairmen determine just how good he is?

There are prizes for the closest. The chairman (or chairmen) who guess the player's CA to within the closest value will win a small reputation and finance boost. The closest of the 11 federation members on top of this will also receive a randomly selected prize for their nation, which they may or may not need to act upon further. There is also a bonus prize for guessing the closest PA of the player, which shall be revealed when the awards are dished out. Chairmen have one day to decide upon their estimates, which may be either posted in the thread or sent to me via PM.

I knew retaining the league was going to be too big of an ask this year but I am very pleased Le Mont-Doré United got champions league glory! The addition of the Super Cup makes the trophy cabinet pleasant viewing. Auckland FC look very impressive and Canterbury FC look increasingly strong and they seem to love taking the power cup away from me! (very well done to them on that front). There are some very strong teams in Oceania and as chairman, I am delighted to see the progress. I would also like to particularly congratulate Noumea for qualifying for the champions league on their first season up.
