Thanks for the response and yeah agreed, not ideal not to have fans. Wonder if any other MB Air M1 users experience the same? Then at least I know it’s not just mine 😁

May be worth checking to see if other things are running in the background and adding to the load on the processor.  I assume there's something equivalent in MacOS to the Windows Task Manager, but I've never owned an Apple computer so don't know for sure.

Hi

I read the opening post several times but I still don't fully understand it. I'm not a total novice with computers but I'm far from a pro either. Can somebody who is answer me some questions please.

So, I am getting a new laptop for Christmas. We will be spending between £400 and £650. Cheaper the better obviously. But £650 absolute maximum. I don't mind a refurbed one from a website who offers a year or two guarantee. But again, I'd obviously prefer new.

My current laptop was not good enough to play FM22 at a sufficient speed and made it such a drag that I ended up going back to FM12!

The current spec of this laptop is:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz   2.60 GHz

8.00 GB

Windows 10 Pro

I don't know how to find out how much storage space there is, but the Local Storage (C) says 111 GB if that's what it means? (Like I said, I am no expert).

I use my laptop mainly for FM, but also browsing the net, placing bets, watching football and YouTube, etc. NO other gaming, at all.

Basically, I'd like to upgrade everything on the laptop, if possible, but if not, I want to upgrade whichever parts make FM run faster - and I'm still not completely sure what that is.

The Operating System and cores are and always have been, a complete mystery to me. I get the higher the RAM the better, and I get the higher the memory and storage the better.

Sorry for the long post, but can someone tell me in what order of importance they are to run FM faster? I just want a laptop that will make the game go as fast as possible. Thanks for reading.

Would this for example be good enough, and would it be a lot better than my current one? Or just a little better?

That one will certainly offer a decent performance boost over what you've currently got.  The CPU is the biggest factor when it comes purely to FM, but you will want an SSD over a HDD due to how much quicker for overall system performance a SSD is.... that said, most current laptops will come with SSD rather than HDD anyway.

Based on what you've said, I'd probably go for this: https://www.box.co.uk/NX.EGJEK.012-Acer-Extensa-15-Intel-Core-i5-16GB-RAM-5_4156743.html

That offers a better CPU still than the one you've mentioned above, plus it has a nicely sized SSD and 16GB RAM.  The CPU here also has better integrated graphics capability than the other one.

Hi,

I'm looking to get a laptop mainly for fm & watching YouTube/Netflix on. I want one where I can load say 6 odd leagues, face packs & have the game running smoothly, as well as sometimes having a video running in the background on YouTube. Something slim, that will have good battery, not be too hot or loud from the fans & will last me for a long time.

I was thinking of getting a MacBook Air, but the no fans/256gb put me off & I feel like paying £1700 for a laptop you can’t upgrade the ssd or ram on for a pro might not be worth it.. Any help/suggestions would be great. Budget is between £1000-£1400. Though I don’t currently have a laptop, so anything is a boost on nothing lol

I've been seeing an increase of people stating issues with the Macbook Air getting hot, so this is something to be aware of.  The thing to bear in mind is that laptops are not always upgradable - sometimes RAM is soldered to the board so this is something to be aware of as well.

Spec-wise, this is fantastic although the look won't be for everyone as it is a little bit loud: https://www.box.co.uk/9S7-158352-295-MSI-Crosshair-15-Intel-Core-i9-16GB-RAM-_4103721.html

This is the same spec if you find the look of the other one off-putting: https://www.box.co.uk/9S7-158314-065-MSI-Pulse-GL66-Intel-Core-i9-16GB-RAM-1_4103715.html

Yeah, I have also heard this about the MacBook Air, hence why I was looking at the pro, but for the price might be a bit overkill for what I will use it for?

That bottom one doesn’t look too bad, but again would the rtx 3070 be a bit overkill just for playing FM & watching movies/series?

@kevhamster I don't know what you think? It's your thread and I'm slowly getting back into my building of computers.. but lots of talk of laptops I get the whole mobility thing, moving around with it. But you ideally need one on a hard surface anyway to help the fans do their work. If you've got space surely a desktop.

I run both a mid range i7 10th gen GTX 1660. But my desktop is 11th gen i7 with a GTX 3070.

30/70 spilt when comes to use for gaming.

The 3070 would be overkill in terms of graphics card, but I was basing it on the best CPU I could find in the budget and that was just the graphics card it was paired with.

Not entirely sure what your question is?

But in terms of recommendations it's all down to what any person finds important.  The vast majority of people on here specify that they want a laptop.

And to be honest, currently laptops is where the better deals are in terms of spec for the price.  And obviously a laptop requires much less room than a PC case, keyboard and monitor.

That said, you do give up the aspect of upgradability if buying a laptop, as generally all you can really upgrade is the RAM and SSD (and even that's not possible in all cases).  Also, you'll be likely to have a larger display with a desktop and a desktop is less likely to get physically damaged than a laptop due to the fact you generally find somewhere to put it and leave it there.

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop to run FM23 at a good speed. Budget is around £500. Beyond FM, I'd use it for web browsing, YouTube, listening to music and the odd bit of writing/working (all Chrome-based). Graphics aren't a major concern and I'd happily run the 3D engine in medium settings if need be.

This seems like a good bet to my novice eyes: https://www.box.co.uk/S413EA-AM1887W-ASUS-VivoBook-14-Intel-Core-i5-16GB-RAM-_4089273.html?utm_source=criteo&utm_medium=display&utm_campaign=Web Conversion

Any other suggestions or is this one likely to be the best shout?

Thanks!

They'd all be fine.  I'd go for the one at Currys as it has the best performing CPU according to https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?

I ordered the below last night for the same price (with a £20 discount through my work) - it's the same size but has 16GB RAM and a newer processor. Hard drive is only half the size so that may be an issue depending what you intend to use it for.

It's a good time to buy at the moment with Black Friday deals.

For me, I'd go with more cores.  Base speed is less and less of a factor these days.

Not really a laptop person, but based on that the intel seems comfortably stronger

It's fine, but definitely on the expensive side for the spec.  I'd assume it's the large SSD bumping the price up.

https://www.box.co.uk/82K200C3UK-Lenovo-ideaPad-Gaming-3-AMD-Ryzen-5-8GB-_3638080.html - this has a better CPU and a dedicated graphics card and is cheaper.

https://www.box.co.uk/NX.EGJEK.012-Acer-Extensa-15-Intel-Core-i5-16GB-RAM-5_4156743.html - this has the same CPU as the one you've and 16GB RAM and is nearly £200 cheaper, but it has the smaller 512GB SSD.

Gents, I am looking to get a new laptop and coming here for some excellent advice!

The laptop is predominately for FM, will also use it to do emails, word processing, etc.

I would like something that could basically run as many FM leagues and settings as I'd like without lag or issues, etc.

I'm Australia based so needs to be something that can either be bought in Australia or that I can get shipped here and works with the power and all that.

Budget wise looking to keep it under $3k AUD, although I don't really know what I can get away with! (So that's like 1700-2000 pounds)

Some ideas on websites that could work for this are:

Lenovo - albeit this link is to think pads but Lenovo in general https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/search?fq=&text=Thinkpad x1 extreme&rows=20&sort=relevance

https://www.mwave.com.au

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/computers-tablets/laptops

https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/c/technology/macbooks-laptops?cm_sp=all:menu:technology:::laptops

Open to any other options...Really looking for the best bang for buck to get a quick laptop that will last me 3-4 years and run 20-25 leagues

This is a cracking spec, but is a 14" screen so not sure if you want a larger display: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/razer-blade-14-165hz-qhd-gaming-laptop-r96900hx-16gb-1tb-rtx3070ti-w11h-ac51764

Hi Kev, thanks very much for your help on the previous page.

I've never actually bought a refurbished laptop before hence slightly wary of buying one vs a new. But you'd recommend buying from laptops direct?

You had recommend the below:

https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/deals/lenovo-ideapad-3-15-intel-core-i3-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-11th-generation-cpu-15-6-fhd-screen-laptop/

Id also seen another:

https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/deals/lenovo-ideapad-3i-12th-generation-core-i3-8gb-rams-15-6-fhd-screen-laptop/

Would you see much difference in those 2 or have come across anything comparable/better?

I'm also wary that black Friday is approaching, although possibly won't get much better than the above to be fair

I've bought 2 laptops from Laptop Station, both refurbished - one in 2017 and one in 2019.  Both still work and are in regular use.  I can also vouch for their warranty as the more recent purchase in 2019 required a warranty return before I got the one I have now.

I don't think you'll find better than those at the budget you have.

Do you tend to take out the 12 or the 24 month warranty?

The second one is the one to go for.  Go for the longest warranty you can - always recommended even with new ones!

Hello folks!

Looking  for some advise. The screenshot is my current laptop that is 6 years old. Still working fine. My question is….I want to run FM23 with max players and 5 or so playable leagues. I am considering buying a new laptop and would have a budget upto £1,500. I do not play other games and I would be using a laptop for FM and web browsing, YouTube videos.

Would my existing laptop be fine? Or would I get a big speed increase with a new laptop with a budget of £1500?

Both things are true. Your existing laptop is fine, but you would get a significant performance boost buying a new laptop with that kind of budget.

Hi All,

Apologies if this has already been posted in here but would the following be ok for FM 23?

Buy LENOVO IdeaPad 3i 11.6" Chromebook - Intel® Celeron®, 64 GB eMMC, Black | Currys

Regards

I'm afraid not, it's a Chromebook and Football Manager is not compatible with Chrome OS.  You need either a Windows machine, or a Mac.  You'd also probably need to spend a bit more than that laptop is selling for as any Windows laptop for that price will be absolutely terrible to run the game on.

Hi Kev, thanks for the advice above re refurbished laptops from laptop station. I've decided I'm going to buy one, but the 2 Lenovos I'd posted are out of stock (need to move fairly quickly by looks of it). Would there be any others on there (less than £300 preferably, but failing that in and around that mark) that you'd recommend?

Cheers!!

Have to use Curry’s as I have a voucher for there.

£200-300 limit.

if you could recommend any that would be great? 🙂

I like 11-12 inch screen size

I've had a look.  All of the 11 and 12 inch screen laptops at Currys will be terrible for FM and I can't in good conscience recommend any of them.

This 14" model will do a fine job though: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lenovo-ideapad-3i-14-laptop-intel-core-i3-128-gb-ssd-blue-10224414.html

That's the smallest one in the budget that I could recommend.

Hey all...so I'm coming back for some more advice..

Looking for 20-25 leagues and I want it to run like a breeze...

Lennovo in Australia have their pre-black Friday sales so I want to know, could any of the ones below basically run whatever size FM I want with great performance..

1.  https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpade/ThinkPad-E15-Gen-4-(15-inch-Intel)/21E60067AU

2. https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx1/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Gen-10-(14-inch-Intel)/21CBCTO1WWAU6

3. https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series/legion-5i-gen-7-(15-inch-intel)/82rb00gjau

4.https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadp/ThinkPad-P16s-(16-inch-Intel)/21BT002PAU

5. https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadp/ThinkPad-P1-Gen-5-(16-inch-Intel)/21DC001QAU

Or any other options on the Lenovo.com.au website as there are a number of sales. I'm happy to spend AUD anywhere up to $3,000

This is the one I'd go for: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series/legion-5i-gen-7-(15-inch-intel)/82rb00gjau?orgRef=https%3A%2F%2Fcommunity.sigames.com%2F

Can't comment on how you'll find the speed with any specific setup, as per the OP, but this will handle the game as well as anything else within the budget.  It's got the best CPU I can find in that price bracket.

Hi there, looking for a bit of advice, been a FM player for a years and the old laptop wasn’t up to much standard to run FM so time for a new one.

What I’m looking for is a laptop that will be able to run 6/7 leagues with a Large database , I’m not overly fussed about 3D as I always loved the 2D.

I’d much prefer if it was able to run smoothly as I tend to play long term saves so something without much lag etc would be ideal.

Budget is around £500-£700.

Thanks in advance, doing Gods work helping as I haven’t got a clue about what I’m looking for.

HI everyone,

Terrific thread this, looking for some advice on a new laptop now that my old faithful has finally packed it in.

Would only be for FM and browsing the web/streaming and have a budget of £400.

Saw this on currys - is that a decent deal or could I get more bang for my buck elsewhere?

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/acer-aspire-3-15.6-laptop-intel-core-i5-512-gb-ssd-silver-10243540.html

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Steve

Thank you

Would this laptop be any better than the above you have kindly posted?
