Andorra - April 2009 Update

World Cup Qualifiers

Kazakhstan 1-1 Andorra

Sooooo close to stealing 3 points but a 94th minute penalty denied us.

Andorra 0-2 England

We somehow managed to come out of this match without being destroyed as I'd previously feared. A result I feel is pretty good. (Sounds weird to say)

Andorra 1-1 Belarus

A game where we were outplayed but managed to hold firm and come away with a point.

Friendly

Andorra 0-1 Ireland

I arranged a friendly with Ireland to try and see what formation worked best for us, and we held our own well, creating a couple of chances.

World Cup Qualifiers

Croatia 3-0 Andorra

We were lucky to keep the score down to just 3 but nothing to be ashamed of.

Friendly

Egypt 1-0 Andorra

We had lots of possession but couldnt create too many clear cut chances, whereas Egypt had a few. Disappointed to lose what was a fairly even game.

World Cup Qualifiers

Andorra 1-7 Croatia

Well a heavy defeat had to come at some point.:( They managed to take a fair few of the chances they made. Although on the upside we managed to create some chances of our own.

World Ranking (March 2009): 173rd

A question for those playing as the really small nations - do enough regens get created to keep the challenge going? As I'm looking to start a game at some stage taking over one of the lowest ranked nations in view to taking them to World Cup success and was wondering how feasible it really is as you can't upgrade via signings like with clubs.

I played this last year with C.A.R. and I really enjoyed it. Someone mentioned managing small nations in GD so I found myself here and I'm going to attempt it again.

I'm loading a game in the hope I can get Papua New Guinea.

Ok, so I decided to go with Pakistan. I had tried Mongolia but the players were so utterly terrible that it most likely would have gotten old fast. At least with Pakistan I can have some variation and more choice than who has 8 for crossing instead of 6.

Leagues loaded: All the Asian leagues, Australia, England (BSS/N), France (CFA), Italy (C2), Spain (D2B), Germany (D3) and Russia (in case I should be able to pick any of the Asian ex-soviet nations). I have loaded all players from every Asian and Oceanian nation as well as some nations from Europe. Large database.

With that set up I had a nice spread of lower ranked nations from Asia and Oceania to choose from. No Papua New Guinea though.

Pakistan are a little higher than I feel is really hard, but it should still be a challenge to get any great results, i.e. trophies. I'll be happy to beat India.

Hello one and all, sorry I've been neglecting this challenge of mine.

My part time board game business I set up some months back, "suffered" a Christmas rush which basically meant my spare time when I wasn't at my day job or at church were spent packing board games! Anyhow I have now removed MarkTrevors and Anagain's offending entries on the website so all should be back to normal.

JSalter, well done on the best ranking so far, has no one managed to break into the top 100 yet?

I decided to take the reigns in Belize, the only English speaking country below the US in the Americas region, so at least we spoke the same language, knowing that I figured it'd be my best chance at taking a minor nation to glory.

I loaded American MLS, both Mexican Leagues, Columbian and Peruvian divisions due to the proximity of the competitions. I also loaded extra players from all the Central American nations: Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador.

My starting squad could of been worse, the pick of the bunch was my £450,000 rated uncapped goalkeeper Shane Orio who I gave the captaincy in my first move as manager. There was also a good all around striker in Selvin de León who plays professionally in the Guatemalan league valued at £120,000. With someone half decent up front and solid shot stopper between the sticks I felt we at least had a chance against the smaller nations. The rest were pretty average, most valued under £10,000.

World Cup North American Qualifying Section - Phase 1

Our first competitive match was to be against Netherlands Antilles, at first glance I was delighted as in my naiveity I presume we were a better team as I hadn't even heard of the country, but we were not. Ranked 148th in the world we were the underdogs to say the least, 30/1 outsiders for the first leg away from home. All in all we played relatively well in an evenly matched game and if it hadn't of been for two moronic challenges in our own penalty area then probably would've gotten the draw. Replays showed our centre back hacked their centre forward 10 yards off the ball. Its all good having a good keeper but from 12 yards out its luck of the draw, two penalties, two goals, 2-0.

Netherlands Antilles 2 - 0 Belize

Clarke (pen 37, pen 59)

The bookies put us at 15/1 for this, an improvement, but we had a 2 goal defecit to make up so the underperformers in the first leg were dropped and some new faces given a chance to impress on their debuts. After my motivational pre-match speach the players head out simply hoping for the best, amazingly by half time we were right back in it, a pinpoint cross from the wing back Bernard Leñarez and a glancing header by the debutant striker Harrison Róchez got us the first and an own goal from a corner made it level. We continued from where we left off after half time and ran out eventual 4-0 winners, incredible. A powerful header from another debutant centre back Orlando Lyons and a precisely taken penalty from our set peice specialist Oliver Hendricks sealed the win.

Belize 4 - 0 Netherlands Antilles

Róchez (34) Arroyo (OG 40) Lyons (61) Hendricks (pen 65)

An overall 4-2 aggregate win means we are through to Phase 2 to face.... Canada.... s****.

World Cup North American Qualifying Section - Phase 2

We went out hoping to put in a good performance and to carry some momentum from the previous victory. It proved very difficult to create chances against and spent most the game sitting deep in our own half. Just after the ten minute mark Toronto FC forward Dwayne De Rosario gave Canada the lead at halftime but we were still defending resolutely until De Rosario popped up for his second in the 55th minute. Róchez grabbed one back in one of our only chances in the match giving us a glimmer of hope going into the second leg.

Belize 1 - 2 Canada

Róchez (70); De Rosario (11,55)

We performed just as in the first leg, always on the backfoot but with the odd chance that might get us back in the game, but it never happened. We had as much of the possession but just couldn't create any chances in the final third. De Rosario scored one of many attempts for Canada and they progressed to the group stage.

Canada 1 - 0 Belize

De Rosario (46)

Next up two friendlies in September, away to American Samoa and at home to Algeria. Plus a tie against the Dominican Republic who narrowly missed out on the group stages, losing on penalties to Jamaica.

Encouraging start so far though, very commendable perfomances from my team of unknowns.

Friendy Matches

The Belizean FA spent their annual budget on travelling to an away tie in the south pacific against American Samoa who were ranked 203rd out of the 208 national teams in the world. After a poor first half we went in a goal down, an adjustment to the tactics and a couple of substitutions revitalised our team and they were much the better in the second half, with Selvin De León proving a point after being dropped for the Canada match by getting a brace. Five players made their debuts.

American Samoa 1 - 3 Belize

Warren (9); De León (63,87), Nolberto (73)

Next up Algeria, strong team, ranked inside the worlds top 50. After 30 minutes I was speachless, 3-0 up and cruising but then Algeria grabbed a vital goal just before half time and in the back of my mind I knew Algeria were on the verge of a comeback. Into the second half Nadir Belhadj got Algeria a second goal to make it 3-2 and they kept on pressing for the third. As we were holding on desperately for the win Dennis Serrano hoofed the ball clear and Harrison Róchez found himself one on one with the keeper and he placed it neatly into the corner of the net to seal a famous win.

Belize 4 - 2 Algeria

Fraser (23), De León (27), Hendricks (35), Róchez (85); Amir (41), Belhadj (63)

Our final match in 2008 was against the Dominican Republic who incidently were ranked one place above us in the world rankings after our win against Algeria made us climb 11 places to 155th. We played well throughout the match, De León got the only goal of the game to ensure three straight victories for Belize, a record, Selvin De León's four goals is also a record tally.

Belize 1 - 0 Dominican Republic

De León (46)

Thank you Aesler for breathing new life into this challenge, I haven't had much chance to play recently. Some good results already there, good luck against Canada.

To keep the challenge fair to all, no adding of players is allowed but as has already been stated retaining all players from your country is required in most cases.

Belize - Summary of 2008

Results

Competitive: W1 D0 L3 F5 A5

Non-Competitive: W3 D0 L0 F8 A3

Overall: W4 D0 L3 F13 A8

A very encouraging year to have won more games than we have lost, even if only one of them came from a competitive fixture. The defeats weren't embaressing either, even being the major underdog against Canada we put up a fight and even managed a goal. The highlight of the year was definatly the 4-2 victory over Algeria, beating a top 50 side gives us the belief that, with a bit of luck, we could qualify for a major tournament sometime in the not so distant future.

Player Info

As I have only recently taken the job at Belize, a lot of the squad call ups were based on club form so there has been quite a lot of rotation amongst the starting line ups; however a few players have already started to shine and establish themselves in the starting 11.

Selvin De León is Belize's all time record goalscorer, with a ground breaking 4 goals. After a fairly average start the £110,000 rated striker found his goalscoring form, getting his four goals in the three friendly matches. Belize will be hoping he can perform well in the big matches as he will be a key to our sucess.

Oliver Hendricks is our set peice specialist, nothing exceptional but he can strike a dead ball well enough to create chances as well as being able to score himself.

Bernard Leñarez has been more prominant in attack than in defence, surging up the left wing and crossing the ball to perfection, creating three goals.

Shane Orio was once rated at £450,000, but his poor club form may have contributed to his fall in value. However the Belize captain is performing solidly for the national team.

Harrison Róchez is also having a torrid time in his domestic season, but performing exceptionally well for the national team with three goals and an assist. He has probably been the star player of this year.

Thanks all.

Well done Aesler, there are a few teams under the top 150 with bags of potential but no decent infrastructure.

Yeah Belize have quite a few decent players, no match winners though really. But as so many players are of equal ability I have mainly been able to just choose the players on form in the domestic leagues and play them in a very defense 4-4-2 formation (with DM) and it seems to be working well.

Aesler - Great run you've got going there and a big win over Algeria! Do any of your guys play in a major league?

My Overall Best XI for this year played for the following (inc. 7 subs):

Outside Belize

North East Stars (Pro) - Trinidad & Tobago

Heredia (Pro) - Guatemala

CD Savio (Pro) - Honduras

Belizean League

5 players are at FC Belize (Semi-Pro)

2 players are at Kulture Yabra SC (Semi-Pro)

Puntarenas FC (Semi-Pro) - Costa Rica

TexMar Boys (Semi-Pro)

Dangrida United FC (Semi Pro)

Corozal Victory (Semi-Pro)

Revolutionary Conquerors (Semi-Pro)

Hankook Verdes United (Semi-Pro)

Sugar Boys Juventus (Semi-Pro) ...like the team name :D

Hell, one doesn't even have a club.

Don't know why I wasted my time writing that as the answer is simply, no :D. Interestingly all the Belizean teams seemed to have formed no later than 2005 besides Belmopan Bandits (another good name :)).

Friend Matches

The first match of 2009 was a trip to East Africa to face Djibouti who were considered marginal favourites due to the home advantage. We played very well but struggled to hit the back of the net. The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute, Dion Fraser latching onto a Harrison Róchez through ball and finishing well. Róchez added another deep into injury time to make it 2-0.

Djibouti 0 - 2 Belize

Fraser (78), Róchez (90+3)

A few months on it was our turn to host Cambodia at The People's Stadium, a game we should have continued our winning streak to a record five matches. Club-less Sylvain Lyons grabbed two well taken goals in the first half and veteran striker Rudolph McKoy rounded off the victory with his first international goal in the 83rd minute. Sadly Lyons performance wasn't enough to attract interest from any clubs and is set to retire later next year.

Belize 3 - 0 Cambodia

S.Lyons (4,43), McKoy (83)

Four days later we had to contest our toughest fixture to date, an away tie to the Ivory Coast. A heavy defeat was expected but the experience would have been invaluable to the squad for future competitions playing in front of the 30000 spectators. We spent virtually the whole game in our own penalty area but miraculously only lost 2-0, Didier Drogba and Kanga Akalé getting the goals. In fact it was more than a miracle, Albert Thurton was giving his marching orders early in the second half and they had 51 attempts at our goal, if it wasn't for a man of the match performance from our goalkeeper Shane Ohio then it could've been a cricket scoreline.

Ivory Coast 2 - 0 Belize

Drogba (35), Akalé (89)

We then travelled to Jamaica in September to face John Barnes' men who narrowly missed out on making it through the second phase world cup group qualification for North America. The 87th ranked team were firm favourites but we were confident we could get something from the game. An evenly matched first half meant the sides went in level. After the break Oliver Hendricks caught the defence napping and scored from a great solo run, darting in from the left flank to score 30 seconds after the restart. Jamaica picked themselves up but then against the run of play Selvin de León got a second and we managed to sit back on the lead amid constant pressure until the full time whistle. John Barnes was promptly sacked.

Jamaica 0 - 2 Belize

Hendricks (46), de León (56)

Our mid-week fixture was against minnows the Northern Mariana Islands (minnows even compared to Belize's standard) and we were expected to record a comfortable home victory. It was a good opportunity to field some of the fringe players in the nation side to look for any potential. We didn't seem to look motivated enough and the game ended in a bore draw, 0-0.

Belize 0 - 0 Northern Mariana Islands

The last game of the year was against one of the most established and sucessful international sides in history, Holland. The fear of the resultant scoreline was undeniable after our performance against the Ivory Coast. We improved our performance but not the scoreline, nothing embaressing, a 4-0 loss to the former European Champions was a fair and expected result. We even managed to create a few chances, hitting the woodwork on one occasion.

Belize 0 - 4 Holland

Kuyt (22,49), van der Vaart (68), Vennegoor of Hesselink (85)

Good progress from last year, continuing our winning streak to a record five games. Our away wins at Djibouti and Jamaica were especially pleasing knowing we are capable of causing upsets even on our travels. Fixtures against Holland and the Ivory Coast will also be valuable experience for the squad, even if we were outplayed and defeated.

Player Info

The retiring Sylvian Lyons was actually our best player this year with a rating of 7.20. He got two goals against Cambodia which also earned him man of the match.

Woodrow West also showed some potential in being Orio's sucessor, collecting his third cap with a good performance.

No outstanding player in particular to note, although de León is still leading by example, getting his fifth international goal.

Belize Overall Best XI

Two players were inducted the the Hall of Fame. Victor Morales was capped 5 times but also was forced retired with immediate effect as couldn't find a club, along with Sylvain Lyons who was my only other casualty. Versatile midfielder Dennis Serrano impressed in his two appearances for his country and made it in to the Best XI.

Objectives Review

Another good year, more wins than losses and some respectable performances. Didn't quite break the top 100 but it is looking a reasonable goal.

Future Objectives

Break into the top 100 world rankings, a couple more good victories at the start of 2010 should be enough. We should be back to competitive football so we must translate our non competitive form onto the big stage.

Another problem is that there was no new talent emerging in Belize in 2008 or 2009 and with many Belizean's unable to find a club such as Sylvain Lyons and Victor Morales, the national pool of available players is decreasing. From an inital choice of 149 players, 37 have already retired and 13 more are due to retire this year. The future for Belizean football isn't looking bright with the squad average age approaching the late 20s, it is vital hot prospects come through the youth system in the next couple of years.

Another great year there Aesler. Well played.

Have you had any issues with signing staff for the national team? I've heard there's a problem with it since the new patch.

I hadn't actually tried until you mentioned it. Only had a half decent assistant manager, coach and goalkeeping coach. So reshuffled by backroom staff and brought in a U20s manager, even though we don't have any players under twenty. Hopefully having a manager in place will increase the chances of some regens as this challenge probably won't prolongue if no players come though.

This year there was only one regen, a £900,000 valued 16 year old goalkeeper! But it turns out he is Mexican, but born in Independance Village, Belize. At the current moment in time he will only consider a call up from Mexico, besides a goalkeeper is about the only position which doesn't need significant improvement anyway.

I know its not my place to change the rules of the challenge but heres a suggestion to make it more rewarding. Realistically for most the sub 150 ranked nations, you might be lucky to qualify for a world cup say 1 in 20 times, that doesn't sound much but thats 80 years game time. They simply don't have the facilities to bring the players through to continue competing. Perhaps a more achievable challenge would be to take a club from the sub 100 ranked teams, like kashmirshazad said, "there are a few teams under the top 150 with bags of potential but no decent infrastructure". Teams ranked from 101 to 150 include Albania, Jamaica, Iceland, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Montenegro, Benin, Congo and Sudan, some of which have broken well into the top 100 in real life and have a handful of decent players. With a better chance of developing regens and a slightly better standard team, the challenge will feel more like its an achievable goal to qualify for the world cup and possibly in the long run even win it as a final objective if you get a lot of luck.

Having said that I'm doing pretty well with Belize, so I could be jumping the gun. We were unfortunate to draw Canada in the 2010 world cup qualifiers and didn't make it through. Results since then have been impressive, but since the Canada game we haven't had any competitive football and it is now over two years later. The next couple of years will have a huge impact on Belize's ambitions, if we fail to make any progress in qualifying for a major tournament with our ageing squad and no players come through at grass roots level then it may already be game over.

I notice that Myanmar, Malaysia and Vietnam are in the list. They actually have quite a decent shot of success. Vietnam won the South East Asian Nations Championship IRL in January in fact.

I did have a quick browse to see if there was any potentially decent teams ranked below 150 but I don't know much about football in Africa or Asia and couldn't where where the data editor is these days to check the quality of players from each nation (can anyone point me in the right direction? - I'm using steam).

The World Cup 2010 has just finished and only one team qualified outside the top 100 ranked teams, New Zealand. They came bottom of the group but did manage a draw against Paraguay who narrowly lost to third place finishers Portugal in the second round knock-out. England lost in the final to Holland 1-0.

Good luck with the some fixtures, IMO, Montenegro will be the next big thing IRL.

However I havent really had a chance to try out international management on FM09, but I will do once I get a weekend off :)

Go on give it a try!

One benefit of Montenegro is that was a part of what use to be Yugoslavia. That area is now broken down into Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. This should hopefully mean a fair amount of dual nationality regens to pick from as it seems in the game that many eastern European players are of dual nationality. Same thing goes for the Baltic region, where Estonia is bordering Latvia and in close proximaty with Lithuania and larger nations such as Denmark, Finland, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Sweden.

After thinking about it, am tempted to try this with India, ignoring their rank, they're one of the only eligible teams to have a playable league which should mean plenty of players and regens.

Malaysia has too.

NIGER 1-0 Uganda

Angola 3-0 NIGER

I had started this before but it got left behind so I'm going to start again with the latest patch.

I have a huge game loaded as I was going to start a new career but chose this instead.

I have all the leagues of Western Europe and Scandinavia loaded to their lowest level as well as the US and Australia. I also have all player loaded from all of Europe and a great many teams around the world (not North America though as I had to make some distinction to have the game run smooth). This is all in a large database.

I had a huge list of nations to choose from and plumped for Papua New Guinea from a random shot.

Papua New Guinea manager.

I have a few players at Queensland based clubs and one actually in the youth setup for Queensland Roar, so he should be worth holding on to. There is one player who has Australian and Papuan dual nationality but keeps refusing my call ups. That's annoying 'cause he'd be useful.

Overall I'm attack heavy so I'll likely plump for a 4-3-3 with my gem no.1 in midfield to build my attack:

David Muta

Knocking Muta's pinpoint passes into the net him will be my gem no.2:

Alex Davani

At the back I'm just going to have to rely on good old fashioned luck.

No friendlies or matches planned yet so I'll have to look to that.

Wish me luck.

I couldn't get settled in the above game. I put the second manager at the club I wanted to manage but the game had released all their best players for some reason. Decided to start again with a different set up. I'll get settled on this challenge at some point.

Set up:

All leagues from Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, USA, South Africa and Australia. Only USA set as playable to try and speed things up.

Players retained from a lot of nations. I left out a lot of the European nations I won't be managing and all of the South American nations. As I was using a large database I figured the bigger world teams will have players. I think all lower ranked teams are selected.

Only semi-pro reputation is selectable.

The choice:

I rolled out the Anagain-randomiser and it fell upon Guinea-Bissau.

Guinea-Bissau manager

I promise I'll keep this one going. :D

In our first friendly we hosted the minnows of Sao Tome e Principe. Ranked at 208th in the world they should have proved a walkover to a national team ranked even as lowly as we were. The game was actually a lot more one-sided than the final scoreline suggested. We pressed forward well with our forwards and midfielders seeing a lot of the ball in the opposition half. Adilson had a good game in the holding midfield role and he supported our back four well.

It was that back four that were suspect and it is something that will need addressing. Whether I just need to sit back a bit more or just give them a right talking to is something I'll look at. The goals we conceded were to a speedy little forward who got man of the match so perhaps playing a little deeper is needed. I did have two injuries to central defenders that didn't really help the defence settle, so that may have had a lot to do with shipping three goals in the second half.

Guinea-Bissau (2) 5 Eder (4), Inzaghi (32), Dionisio (pen 67), Viano Mendes (83), Sene Djalo (90+1)

Sao Tome e Principe (0) 3 Dionisio de Nascimento (57), Luis Leal (80, 90)

G-B (4-3-3): Bandim; Lino, Ivanir Rodrigues, Mamadi, Mauro Fernandes (Ankyofnna on 45 (Viano Mendes on 67)); Adilson, Inzaghi (Jassi Demba on 81), Ronaldo (Mamadu Cali djalo on 45); Eder (Ambi on 67), Boubacar Balde (Sene Djalo on 67), Dionisio (capt).

Yes, but Im cheating on this. ive created about 23 players for Pakistan team, will be playing a friendly soon against Malaysia. Hopefully should make it to the World Cup soon haha !!

I am tempted to start one without cheating, but imagine taking someone like American Samoa, or some Pacific Island team to the World Cup? Thats a challenge worth undertaking

I edited the guinea-bissau domestic league to have the top 10 teams as having youth facilities as 14. I didn't qualify for the world cup or african nations and got as far as 2018 but it felt like it was plausible in doing so. I had one left winger who managed to get a transfer to Athletico Madrid (B Team) and another goalkeeper went to corinthians and eventually the MLS. Perhaps if I'd played it longer then if I had a bit of luck with the youth players attracting interest from abroad then maybe we could of made it to the world cup, some of the youngsters have good potential but need to get a move abroad to forfill it.

My belize game, my best players just retired and there were absolutely no prospects coming through and thats why I gave up after the promising start.

Thats why I might start my own challenge, directly influenced from this as I really do not think it is possible to win a world cup with any of these teams.
