European Adventures 2036 - Stage 4

We fall short of RB Salzburg by one goal.  If we had scored it we would have gon through on away goals.  If we hadn't given away the penalty and held them to two, we would have been into the lottery of extra time and possible penalties.

Based on the two games, we can't argue with being knocked out, as there is a clear difference in quality between the two teams.

Off to the Europa League qualifying we go, with some added cash in our pockets

 

The Europa League draw sees us revert to our coefficient, where we are the least likely to progress based on the past few seasons

And we get another long trip, this time to Azerbaijan, with the winner getting to the Europa League group stage, and the loser getting a nice pay packet and a see you next year

European Adventures 2036 - Stage 5

The home leg goes well, with a good lead and Qarabag not having an away goal, leaving us on the cusp of the Europa League groups stages.

A fairly even game by possession, with neither team taking absolute control, but by use of the possession we had a massive advantage, and used that to claim a good win,

The heat map for the return leg is nowhere near as positive, nor are the rest of the stats.

We were absolutely run off the park, possibly due to the jet lag of travelling 3500 miles for the game.

(32b) Payal was playing due to an injury that (30c) Pleimling picked up, and he played well in the first leg.  He did not play well in the second leg, and shows our lack of depth, being mentioned in the game summary twice.

Mehaliyev scored the same number of goals as our whole team over the two legs, and he only scored them in the second leg.

The positive of this is that we are doing well financially, and while we will naturally lose money through the season we should end the season in the red.  With the board in a good mood we went to visit them to see what we could get out of them

Improvements in our Youth Recruitment which should max it our along with our Junior Coaching.  There are also plans afoot to improve the training and youth facilities, but there is the caveat of them starting at the end of the season, so we may not be able to afford them by season end.

The youth facilities will cost £650,000

The training facilities will cost £160,000

That is a total of £810,000, so we can only really afford to lost £100,000 over the season.  At least one of these upgrades is likely to be cancelled, but hopefully the board will be sensible and only cancel one to give us the best situation possible.

2036-2037 In-Season Update 1 (Matchday 5)

Same plan as last season to update roughly every five games, with extras at the end of 2036 and end of season, plus any major events taking place

Our first three league games came while still playing in Europe, and we managed 17 goals in those games, although we did concede 4 goals which is a lot for us this early.  A bit of a shame that the 8-1 shellacking away to Qarabag seems to have slowed us down, but we have managed wins away to Progres who were 3rd last season, against Kaerjeng who seem to be an issue for us, and then against Titus Petange and away to Jeunesse Esch, both of whom have joined the second tier of teams below the trio of ourselves, Dudelange and Differdange, in recent seasons.

Overall not the most difficult five games we could have faced, but it was not a gentle start, especially with the travel to Austria and Azerbaijan between games.

Obviously our perfect start puts us in the running early on, so in the next five games we need to ensure we keep the goals flowing

Racing (LUX) should be easier than a few seasons ago, before the toughest away test against Dudelange.  Mamer and Union Mertert provide the easier games in this batch of fixtures, either side of Fola Esch away who can be tough and have started the season well.

2036-2037 In-Season Update 2 (Matchday 10)

Not perfect, but if 13 points from 15 was on offer before a run of games including Dudelange and Fola Esch away, along with Racing (LUX), I would have taken it.

We pretty much dominated the game against Dudelange, and deserved the win, although 6-1 was a bit excessive.

Against Fola Esch we were fairly even in possession and shots, but we struggled to hit the target with any regularity, and had most of our possession out on the wings, ceding the centre of the pitch to Fola Esch.  Not really a shock to drop points in this one, but it does ruin our perfect start to the season

We are still top, and the sole remaining unbeaten team.  Dudelange have only lost against us, then drew with Progres to allow us to keep our three point lead at this stage.  Fola Esch are playing well this season and are pushing to put the poor performance a couple of seasons ago out of their minds, with Titus Petange being close on their heels.

A bit of a gap back to 5th and 6th, with Progres and Differdange dropping points.  They both went out of Europe at the first time of asking, so it isn't a hangover from those games, but a struggle to score with Progres having a 0 GD, and Differdange +2, despite both of them winning more than they have lost.

No real surprises below 6th, with the rest of the teams fighting it out to avoid the relegation playoff, with a big gap to the bottom two.

Some high scoring games have boosted our goal difference with the 8 goals conceded in ten games being a bit of a worry, although the fact we have scored 38 means there is a solid back up if we do concede.

Next up comes a double header against Differdange, in league and cup where we have a tough 3rd round draw.  The board expect us to reach the final, so we really need to win, but our good run in Europe has them really happy with our performances, so we may be able to get away with a poor result if needed.

Norden and US Hostert round out the first run of games, before Kaerjeng and Swift Hesperange lead us to the winter break, cup dependant.  We should go unbeaten again, but the trip to Kaerjeng may provide a challenge, as will Differdange as usual

2036-2037 In Season Update 3 (Matchday 15, Cup 3rd round and Last 16)

Another good run of games to end 2036

We were able to beat Differdange in the cup in a slightly tougher game than the league game, and were rewarded with a tie against Mondorf which was much easier.

Swift Hesperange managed a single shot against us, which hit the target, and our keeper was clearly bored and had drifted off

We were wasteful with our chances, but should really have won this game

Regardless of this, as we hit the winter break we have a six point lead over Dudelange after they lost two games in the run of five games.

Titus Petange are keeping up pressure on Dudelange, with Fola Esch not far behind.  Differdange have dropped off this season, but the chasing pack have closed the gap on the top with some of the results being quite cyclical.

We face the toughest test in the cup next time out, which will come straight after our second league game against Differdange.

 

The next set of fixtures will be introduced after the transfer window, where hopefully we will be able to send some more players out on loan

I didn't face any bugs that I was aware of (on FM18 though).  Part of this is that I have no clue what the actual structure is meant to be, so just went with what loaded, although the Claassen databases seem to have a high reputation for accuracy

Entering 2037 - Mid Season Preview

Eleven games to go, and a seven point lead.  The game against Dudelange will be key on the run in

Titus Petange first up will be tough as they are currently in third, but facing them straight after the winter break should give us an advantage as we pushed to regain fitness with five friendlies.

The big three games are spread out through the run in, with Differdange followed by Dudelange in the cup being tough, and Progres being our final fixture being tough, so hopefully we will have the league wrapped up before then

2037 Youth Intake

(37a) Kettenmeyer comes in at MC and immediately causes a headache, as he is good enough to play, but adding him into a logjam at MC means we are going to have a grumpy player somewhere.  I can't even look to drop someone back to DC as (37b) Grettnich comes in at DR/DC freeing up (28e) Weis to move back to DC giving us good depth there.

Some hope for the future with two players at 4* PA and two at 3.5*

Only four players will end up with a yellow star rating after the trial game (based on past experience, with the top two and then players 6th and 7th by PA which bodes well.  (37g) Martins has a high determination level so there is the possibility that he steps in as our rotational striker next season to boost his development

By position we have a couple of players who might struggle to make our team in (37i) Pedro at the now defunct DM position, and (37m) Todorovic at MR which we have never used.  (37m) Todorovic won't get offered a contract due to the minute chance that he will retrain then be good enough to play.  I will try to retrain (37i) Pedro to see what we can do

2036-2037 In Season Update 4 (Matchday 20)

A perfect set of fixtures, with the wins against Titus Petange and Dudelange being the highlights of this stretch.

Titus were reasonable fresh despite the lack of a mini-pre-(mid)-season, but we were able to outlast them, whereas we left it late against Dudelange to secure all the points

Our possession came in good areas, but we didn't press on and get the shots we would expect, but four shots on target giving three goals shows a clinical side when we did get good opportunities.  We should not have needed the late goal, but it is good to see us come under pressure and survive instead of crumbling

The win against botom side Mamer secured European football for next season, but the title is what we are after again.  The win against Dudelange gives us a 10 point lead with 18 available, so we should get home fairly comfortable

 
Planning out the final fixtures it should go as follows

Win-Win - gap 10, 15 to play for

Win-Win/Draw - gap 10/12, 12 to play for

Win/Draw -Win - gap 8/10/12, 9 to play for

So if we are perfect in the next three games we will secure the title.  Dudelange may struggle against Progres, but our toughest game comes straight after against Differdange on the short week.

After the cup tie we face Norden and US Hostert so will pretty much wrap up the title in those two games if needed, meaning the tough game to finish against Progres should be without pressure

Hopefully it is the start of a run of dominance, and we can push on in Europe to allow us to grow some more

(37a) Kettenmeyer coming through will add a selection headache, but at a young age he won't expect to play.  More strength in depth will make it easier to keep our better players signed up, and will mean we can overcome injuries and not drop off which is a risk we currently face

2036-2037 In Season Update 5 (Matchday 26, Cup Quarter Final)

Mostly good wins with a tighter game against Differdange, but two poor results.

Union Mertert were bottom when we played them, and we struggled against them.  One shot on target, which we conceded from looks like a fluke result but the heat map shows that they had lots of possession in our half despite their defensive formation, but they also kept us well away from goal.

The Dudelange result was a rotated team due to a couple of knocks that we had picked up, and a first run out for a couple of the 2037 intake players, and we failed to hit the target once in that game.

 

This is the second time we have won twice in a row, and now our fifth title in the past decade, so we will look to build for the threepeat

This goes even better as we managed a lovely record of 23-3-0 dropping a paltry six points over the season.  The league record is 25-1-0 so we have a way to go to top that, and a perfect season will be a massive challenge, especially if we improve in Europe and reach a group stage

Titus Petange beat Dudelange in the penultimate round of fixtures, allowing them to sneak into 2nd in the league.  Progres will get into Europe as Dudelange will look for revenge against Titus Petange in the cup final.

2036-2037 End of Season

Our unbeaten season leads to a clean sweep for the best player in the country.  (33a) Lombardelli is an AMR who has pushed (30d) Dias this season, and while the depth is great, keeping both players happy could start to be a challenge

 

Our fans prefer the goals of (35c) Thill to the judges of Luxembourg, although (31a) Fellerich is getting his from AML (IF)

We were the biggest overachievers in the Champions League by reaching the third qualifying round, which is nice.  Hopefully we can go one step further this next time and reach the fourth qualifying round, which might not be as big an overachievement

We set a new average attendance record this season of 2826 of the 3131 seats, so the board want more room.  Hopefully this is the final expansion we can fit (our second), and next time round we get a new stadium as our surface is a mess and we cannot afford to replace it.

The loan we have taken out, along with the loan from the last expansion means we are paying £9000 per month out to repay loans, so our finances will begin to be very precarious without a good European run

 

At the end of the European campaign we asked for improvements to facilities which were accepted but put off until the end of the season.  When the costs came through, it was obvious that we couldn't afford the Youth Facilities upgrade, but we were able to keep hold of enough money to improve our Training Facilities which is good.

I knew at least one upgrade would be lost. But at least we avoided the worst case of cancelling the cheaper one, then running out of funds for the more expensive one

I will dig into the Club Brugge Champions League run when I get on later. The start of the save included the aim of winning over all three countries loaded, but defeating a dominant Club Brugge may be beyond my skills (especially as it has taken nearly 20 years to begin to overcome the big teams in Luxembourg, and will need us to win the league consecutively at least 5 times to be seems as complete)

2037-2038 Fixture Reveal

First up is the Champions League, where despite our good run we are still unseeded.  We need to pull three or four good runs in a row to reach being a seeded team, and if we do that, hopefully we will boost our National coefficient enough to skip a round

We gained 1.925 from last season's run, so it is going to take a full run of 5 seasons to even scrape being seeded...

Best case is Cliftonville, worst case is Basel...

And we are off to face the Irish title holders, who hold a coefficient that is more than 5 times ours.  Tough

If we win, we have an easier tie, with IF being 0.250 better than ourselves, and Cliftonville being to lowest seeded team available from the first round

 

In the League we have a fairly gentle start to the season, with a crunch of key fixtures instead of the nice spread of recent seasons

Dudelange away as the third game will be a good test of how the season will look, but the real test is games 8-10 where we face Progres, Titus Petange and Differdange back to back.  With two of these at home to begin with we should have the better run of it before the winter break, but for the return games it could be what derails a title challenge, or secures the win

Squad Review and Cull

As a Semi-Professional team we have a limit of a two year contract, without any extension options when we negotiate.  That would leave us open to poaching, but we are the second most respected team in the country behind Dudelange, and no decent teams are interesting in the players we are producing.  Some of our off casts have signed for National-2 level sides in France, but there are no offers to purchase anyone.

That means that pretty much every two years everyone is on an expiring contract, and it is easy to review their place in the squad based on their own rise or fall, the improvements elsewhere in the squad, the latest intakes, and the likelihood of them either playing or going out on loan.

This year there were a few players who were not offered a new contract as they were not getting any playing time, and were unlikely to make it back to the main squad, but had served us well

(25h) Turpel was our first top quality player, coming in at DM, but moving to DC and MC when required, and MC more permanently when (26a) Payal arrived a year later. (26b) Dervisevic led the line admirably as a lone striker for a few years in rotation with some others.  (27e) Goncalves (GK) was our best GK by CA, but his PPA had dropped to match his CA, so I want to try and develop a stronger option. (31h) da Graca had a couple of seasons in the striking rotation, but lost out when a few more good prospects arrived not to long after he did.

Most of the others either never made the first team, or were bench options at best, so there is no real loss.

Even with the contract review removing a good chunk of players, there is still work to be done, especially at a couple of positions.  The challenge with this review is we are now expected to win the league and make at least one round of progression in Europe, so we cannot go PPA heavy, but have to balance CA too.  We will still look to take advantage of the loan market, but there are a few players over the last couple of seasons that have failed to attract attention in the loan market and are now getting upset about not playing

(32b) Payal has the potential to play for us in the future, but was not the best MC in his intake, and with (37a) Kettenmeyer coming in has fallen even further down the pecking order.  (33b) Mutsch is a DM so doesn't fit our current tactic but has previously been kept around to allow flexibility to move back to using a DM.  He may be released instead.

(31d) Vogel and (32c) Minelli (GK) have not really made a dent anywhere, but a loan may help them, or I may just get rid of them

 

Now to the actual review, done as usual by moving every player to the main squad, deciding on the 3/4 players per starting position it is worth keeping (2 in the main squad max, and 2 in the U19s max) with the rest going out on loan or being set to sale or release

Goalkeepers

Sorted by PPA there is a wealth of talent, but there is not a huge amount of quality right now.

(31f) Theis (GK) will go due to his lower rating and poor determination level.  (37h) Quiterio (GK) will sit in the U19s to see if he can improve but it doesn't look like he will amount to much.

(30e) Silva (GK) was our main starter this year, but didn't grow from the 1* he started at which is a shame, possibly due to his age.  I will look to loan him out or sell him as he won't make it to the top.  (32c) Minelli(GK) wants first team football but will instead go out on loan, with (34a) Martins (GK) starting and (36b) Schiltz being registered but spending most of the season in the U19s.  He will probably play in the U19s.

Defenders

Right Back

(37b) Grettnich is best suited to DR and may get a chance to shine this season, but spending more time in the U19s.  (31b) Mota is our best out and out DR, and will push (28e) Weis for the starting spot.

(36h) Martins will be offered out for loan, with the others being set to leave

Left Back

(37c) Clement is more of a DC, and one for the future.  I may see if there is a place for him at one of our affiliates, but if not he will be in the U19s

(31g) Andrade has PPA to spare, but at 22 is unlikely to reach it, and has struggled to usurp (29d) Albuqueque who will be the starter again.  (33d) Schnell will stick around as the back up, but as he is now 20 may get grumpy  if he doesn't play regularly.

(37o) Fellerich and (36j) Origer will get a chance to see if they can develop, but (35h) Vanek will join (31g) Andrade on the way out

Centre Back

A couple of oddities here with (37b) Grettnich, (30c) Pleimling and (29c) Winckel showing up when they will be judged at other positions.  (26a) Payal is pretty much a DC now with the removal of the DM position.

(26f) Holtz and (26a) Payal are still the best we have, but at 27 are reaching the end of their peak years.  The challenge will be to blood younger players alongside them to prepare for the future without leaving us at risk at the back.  That is probably a project for next season.  (28e) Weis could move back to DC from DR, and is a little bit more youthful at 25, but the aim will be to get (36f) Osweiler and (37c) Clement developing either in the U19s or on loan.

(35a) May, and (36p) Lemaire will be released with the others who max out at 2.5* PPA or below being offered for loan to try and improve them while keeping some hope for the future

Midfielders

I am going to start this with the positions we won't use in DM, MR and ML, to look at what there is and avoid keeping a player who has no hope of playing for us but this will be hidden.

Defensive Midfielders

(33b) Mutsch wants to play, but will need to be checked at MC.  (37i) Pedro is the only player who is DM only, and will be released.  The rest can play at MC, but are more comfortable at DM, so I will get rid of (36m) Muller and (29c) Winckel as they will not crack the MC rotation.  (36k) Polidori will be reviewed with the MCs

Wide Midfielders

(30b) Joachim was requested on loan, and as he won't be fighting for a starting spot I allowed it before the review started.

All of the players can play at AM too, so will be reviewed there.

 

Central Midfield

Depth here, but in need of a cull.  We play with two MCs, and I am debating if we could go with a third (although I don't want to go back to a lone striker and we are strong at AMR/AML so I don't think it would work), so will need to build carefully here.

(37a) Kettenmeyer will be blooded this year, but I don't want to over exert him as we have some quality available that means we can ease him in.

(34b) Menster, (32a) Teixeira, (35b) Payal, (33b) Mutsch, (32b) Payal, (37f) Binsfield, and (36d) Santos could all grow into starters, but will struggle for game time.  A couple of them are already grumbling about playing time, but have also previously rejected loan deals

(26m) Huss and (30c) Pleimling will make up the main part of our rotation.  I will loan out the older players listed above, and see if (36d) Santos and (37f) Binsfield can fight it out for the 4th MC role, which will mainly involve cup games, and sitting on the bench when another player is injured or needs a rest.

(31i) Bollendorf will be set to be released, as will (36o) Reiter and (37j) Hinsberger as they will not make it for us and have poor determination

Attacking Midfield Right

(33a) Lombardelli and (30d) Dias will fight out for the starting role.

(37i) Cardoso and (36i) Quintal will be released with (33c) Ferron being offered on loan.  (36g) Hahm will be injury cover if required, and can play at AML too.

Attacking Midfield Left

(31a) Fellerich is our nailed on starter here, and (36c) Bossi and (36g) Hahm will stick around the club.

(37e) Post will be in the U19s this year, but the other two players will be released as they are unlikely to play

Strikers

(29f) Bohnert is leaving for Fola Esch at the start of July, so will be gone very shortly.

(36a) Schwitz and (35c) Thill will be our starters.  (37g) Martins and (34c) Langers will be the back ups, with (34j) Toussaint being registered as a fifth option

(32n) Feller will be sent out on loan, along with (35k) Maiget and (35f) Todorovic.  The potential of (37d) Engel and (37k) Oswieler will stick around in the U19s

European Adventures 2037 - Stage 1

We lost (37a) Kettermeyer and (35c) Thill to injuries in our warm up friendlies before the first leg meaning that we were short up front.  The changes from last season in the squad along with the injuries saw us go down 3-0 in the first leg at home, and fail to muster a shot on target in the second leg as we let in four.

The dream of another long run in the Champions League falls straight away, and with the board expectations being for us to make it through the first round it is a poor showing.

That puts us in the Europa League qualifying

We are one of the better unseeded teams, so a good draw could give us a decent chance of progressing

We are off to Gibraltar to see what we can manage in the second qualifying round

European Adventures 2037 - Stage 2

A big win at home led to a rotated team playing the away leg, and we were up 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 before throwing it away in the second half.  But it all meant we go through with a 9-5 aggregate score

Onto the third qualifying round

We are the lowest ranked team in the group of ex-Champions League teams who we can face, so everything is an uphill struggle.

After being drawn to face them if we had beaten Dundalk we get a chance to face them in the Europa League after they lost to Dundalk in the 2nd qualifying stage of the Champions League

They lost 6-2 on aggregate compared to our 7-0.  So there is a chance as we are getting our players fit and back to form

 

In the league we have heard from the bookmakers about the season, and we have two firsts for the save

Favourites for the title (only just)

One of our players favourite for the best player award, and it is (37a) Kettermeyer who has only been able to play one competitive game for us, in the cup last year before missing the European ties this season due to an injury

European Adventures 2037 - Stage 3

Keeping a clean sheet at home was key to getting through.  (36a) Schwitz's goal at the end of the first half left Cliftonville needing two goals, and while they dominated the game, we were comfortable at home.

A slightly different route this year, but for the second consecutive season we are in the fourth and final qualifying round of the Europa League

The hope is anyone but Standard Liege as they have a massive coefficient.  Vardar Skopje would be the best option due to their low coefficient, but in all of the ties we will be the underdogs

We have a chance, as Standard Liege draw Lech Poznan, Dinamo get Maribor and Craiova face Videoton from our section of the draw.

Unfortunately we now have a extremely tough run of fixtures

We have made it past Cliftonville, but only just.  Next up is Racing (LUX) who beat Progres on the opening day of the season, and then the games against Vardar sandwich the trip to Dudelange.

I will play our best team at home against Vardar to give us a chance.  Depending on that result, there may have to be some rotation against Dudelange even though it is the toughest game of the season and could backfire.  I would be happy with a draw in the league game here to avoid us dropping behind Dudelange and playing catch up through the season.

European Adventures 2037 - Stage 3.5

First leg against Vardar is at our home away from home, the national stadium

We are again missing a couple of players due to injury, but are able to put out a fairly strong team.  What stands out here is on the heat map, the average positions looks more like a 4-4-2 than our 4-2-2-2 that the game sees as a 4-2-4.

It was a fairly even game in regards to possession and usage, with us managing to hit the target more frequently than Vardar

And that gives us the narrowest of leads going into the 2nd leg.

It was close, and a shame we didn't make it, but in context of our growth it is a real positive

This was the 2nd time we wont the league, and we struggled for results in Europe.  We had also made it to the Europa qualifying a couple of times before this and struggled, but the comparison stronger with the Champions League entry

The second of two league wins saw us muster a draw at best

Dropping back to the Europa only for a couple of seasons saw some wins.  Clearly this is our level

 

This is where we started to grow with good wins against some of the weaker teams

This was a complete nightmare, but also the most recent time we entered the Europa League first up

Last season may have been our best run as we managed a mini run in the Champions League, with the added financial boost, but fell at the final hurdle to Qarabag who didn't have the best time in the group stage

If that had been us, after our 5-0 first leg win, we would have finished with 0 points, and quite possibly 0 goals

 

This year we are closer again, although we need consistency.  We won every home leg and lost every away leg.  Lincoln (GIB) aside where we rotated this shows we are not really good enough for the group stages.

Dundalk was a tough draw first up as evidenced by the rest of their run

2037-2038 In Season Report 1 - Matchday 5

The worry was that with the European adventures overlapping with the start of the season that we would be overstretched, especially with Dudelange away as our third game

The European results are already known, but is shows how busy August was for us, with a brief break for Internationals before the Avenir Beggen game.

Using a little bit of rotation in positions of strength we have managed to stay unbeaten in the league.  The amount of fixtures has helped keep everyone fit and ready to play, but there is not a huge amount of extra depth currently, so it is a good job we didn't make the Europa groups this time around.  If we had then the chance of a long injury increase, as do the chances of a morale drop, or us throwing away easy points due to fatigue.

The most satisfying result is the win against Racing (LUX) straight after losing to Cliftonville, as they had won their opening game well and were on a high, whereas we had lost (despite winning the tie) and it could have been and issue.  Beating Dudelange away after playing in Europe three days earlier was another good result for us

The next five games see a tough stretch in the second half.

Progres haven't started as well in past seasons but are always tough, while Titus Petange have matched our 100% start so that game could be a decisive game.  Differdange have dropped off the pace in recent seasons, being overtaken by Progres and Titus Petange, but they are no mugs and with it being an away trip after two tough home games we will have to be on our game

Upgrades update

This is not the one I wanted, but the one the board took a loan out for

An extra 1000 seats (give or take), which hopefully we will be filling out straight away.  With the max capacity of 5000, I can see either one more expansion happening, or two, with one getting us to be all seater at about 3500 (loss of seats as they take up more room than people standing) and a second going to 5000.  Not sure if the board would back a move to a smaller capacity that was all seater, but the cost to go to 5000 all seated would definitely be too much for our finances

The Blue loan was for this stadium expansion, and we will be paying it off for ten years, despite us having enough money in the bank to way off all the remaing debts right now.

We might be cutting it close by the end of the season in relation to being able to pay it off, but even if we only paid off the £270,000 of the recent loan, leaving £148,000 to be paid off over the next three years we would save a huge chunk in interest.

 

It does pose the intriguing question - what comes first, a new stadium (possibly named after me), or a son through the intakes?

We are close to 18 seasons, and my understanding is the chance increases after 20 seasons, so two more full seasons, but three more intakes to go.  Versus the possibility of up to two more stadium expansions

2037-2038 In Season Update 2 - Matchday 10

The tough run of games was too much for us.  We didn't have any injuries, but there was a bit of rotation due to tiredness which may have affected us slightly

Looking at the stats we should have beaten Progres, so this is a real shame.  Definitely a point thrown away, if not all three

Titus Petange was closer, with us having the majority of possession but being unable to do anything with it apart from hogging the right touchline

Differdange saw us move more of our possession to the middle of the pitch, but we didn't have enough of it.  We missed a penalty in the 10th minute, and only conceded in the 90th, so this really is a point given away

 

Based on all three games we should have have points in the losses, and possibly more in the draw, but it is a clear blip.  The challenge for us will be when we face this run again, two of the games will be away

We have not quite thrown the league away just yet, but Titus Petange are still unbeaten and have opened up a 4 point gap, which considering they dropped points before us is a real shame as they were able to overcome their blip.

Dudelange are the top team struggling this season, and it could well be the start of a full changing of the guard as Titus Petange have possibly the best facilities around and are now a regular in the European conversation

For comparison we have Poor Training and Basic Youth, with our Training Facilities being improved currently, so they should match those of Titus Petange.

We have much better Youth Recruitment and Junior Coaching, but they have a better chance of developing their players

On paper there is not a huge amount to shout about, but they are still performing well

 

Kaerjeng, Jeunesse Esch and Fola Esch to end the front side of the fixtures, with Jeunesse right on our tails providing a stern test.  We then get Racing (LUX) and Dudelange for the second time to lead us to the Winter Break.

We need to be winning all of these games to keep the pressure on Titus Petange, while hoping that they drop points somewhere.

In the mix of this we join the cup against lower division Atert Bissern, where I will look to rotate a few players in and see how we go

2037-2038 In Season Update 3 - Matchday 15, Last 16 of the cup, and the start of the Winter Break

Our run of fixtures this time provided the welcome distraction of the cup.  After two losses and and a draw, we had one league game before the first cup match, and then the second to come after the final league match of 2037

There was some rotation involved here with backup defenders and wide players, as well as starting some of the regular bench players.  We have been fighting some long injuries this season so it is good to give a range of players the chance to play

Both teams we faced are lower division, but URB managed to defeat league leaders (at the time of the fixture) Titus Petange, yet we crashed 11 past them, setting records as we go

The previous record was the first cup game this season...

The two scorelines were fair reflections of the games, where we dominated.

 

In the league we started four points back of Titus Petange, so needed a good run of results

And we found our form again, managing to pick up some good wins.  The game against Dudelange was our first sellout in the newly expanded ground and set a league attendance record.  The board won't yet let me max out the expansion, with the previous growth being initiated by them.  If we can sell out a few more games then we might get the chance to expand, or break ground on a new stadium.

This is the table as we head off into the break, with Titus Petange overcoming the shock loss in the cup to perform well in the league, dropping points to US Hostert in the final game of 2037.  Two point gap, so we need to continue to be solid and keep the pressure on them

Youth Intake 2038

One of our weaker intakes overall in two ways.  Firstly there are only three players who are rated at 3* or above in OPPA.  And when ordered by CA there is again only three players rated as 1*.  Usually the ratings change on signing as we move from HoYD to Assistant Manager, so there is not a huge amount available to us here.

The best two players by OPPA could be of use for us though

After waiting years for decent striking options we now have a glut of them coming through in (35c) Thill, (36a) Schwitz and (37g) Martins.  This means we are not desperate for (38a) Povoa to step in straight away, and hopefully his low determination doesn't hold his development back too much.

(38b) Chanot hasn't got the same perceived ceiling but with a higher level of determination is more likely to improve and be a decent back up for us, in a position where the prospect pipeline is not the greatest.

 

One player in the intake will be awarded a squad number as soon as he signs, even if he will never make the first team squad.  No prizes, but I am open to people guessing the player and number...

2037-2038 In Season Update 4 (Matchday 20)

A good first few games back in the league, with the now standard tough friendlies doing their job in boosting fitness.

Avenir Beggen must have wished they stayed at home as (36a) Schwitz set a new club record for goals in a game, although we were one goal off the league record result.

Our perfection was not matched by Titus Petange who drew against Grevenmacher and Proges during this run to hand the initiative back to us.  The title race is not over by any means, but we are back in control of our destiny, and with Dudelange dropping two points during the month two it is beginning to look like a two horse race

Titus Petange next up is a huge game.  Lose and we hand the control of the table back.  Draw and we are still not clear of them, so the pressure stays on, but we still have an advantage.  Win and the five point gap with five games to go begins to loom large.

Differdange straight after Titus Petange is not an easy game, and with Kaerjeng hitting some form in 2038 so far with 4 wins, and a draw against Dudelange there are no easy games before we break for the cup game.

I'm currently managing FC Schifflange in Promotion division (using Claaassen leagues and on FM19) having been promoted last year and a few of the quirks of Luxembourg have got me. Having a registration period open before the final game and playoffs is good and bad, having to register youth before they can play is a bit of an odd one too after managing in England for so long.

I'm going to start using your way of recording prospects moving forward with 2020 being my first intake, might try limit myself to one signing a year and get a good youth system going.

The national team is not doing well...

That is roughly 2034-2035 where they were bottom of the barrel in relation to their rating

2037 shows their struggles in qualification, and they haven't managed to get a promotion in the Nations League although they have reached 2nd in the mini league before.

I have not been offered the chance to take over which is a shame, especially as I declared interest at the end of Claude Thill's reign, and then missed the end of Rene Alunni's and found out 11 days later when Ramdedovic turned up to watch my squad.  Only another 5 years and 200 days to go until it comes up again...

Our run in is getting harder

(36a) Schwitz injured himself during an international which came between the Progres and Titus Petange fixtures

(37g) Martins picked up his injury in the Titus Petange game

Due to a lack of fitness for (34c) Langers, I played (33a) Lombardelli at STC in the game against Differdange, where (35c) Thill broke his leg.

That means that (33a) Lombardelli playing out of position, (34c) Langers who needs to get fitter and (37k) Osweiler are the only striking options with four games to go.  (36a) Schwitz will be able to come back during this run of games, but I don't want to rush him into the lineup and re-aggravate his ankle ligaments

Shame that I cannot register the youth intake, as this would be a great chance to give a debut to (38a) Povoa, although he will definitely get a game in the cup to avoid the risk to a league registered player

2037-2038 In Season Update 6 (Matchday 26 - End of Season)

The injuries up front didn't cost us apart from when we rotated in the cup.  Partially as the defence tightened up and kept clean sheets in 15 of the 26 league games this season.

That meant we won our third title on the bounce as we start to cement our dominance at the top of the table.  Titus Petange lost back to back games against ourselves and Dudelange, before a final day draw saw them leapfrogged by Dudelange.  Differdange scrape 4th, but as they will face Dudelange in the cup final they will claim the final European spot no matter what.

Our 95 goals this season is the best we have managed in a season, but still 10 behind the league record, set by Differdange in 2025-2026 when they won 25 and drew one game in the most dominant season in the save.  We also had the strongest defence, meaning that our goal difference is higher than the next three teams in the league combined.

 

Three of the top six goalscorers which is a rare feat for us, especially with the win for (36a) Schwitz who is the only player to score more than one goal a game.  In the assist charts we lock out second through to fifth, and the only player who beat out the stars of Rosport played every game with all of ours missing at least one game.

The kids are alright...

With the growth in the quality of the first team, and not being able to loan everyone out, due to a lack of interest from one side or the other the U19s have performed well this season to seal the title

Their second title, but the thing that stands out is that in the last decade, from when the U19s first made the top three in the table they have appeared seven times, and the last four have been top two.  It is possible that we can build to some further domination of football in Luxembourg

2037-2038 End of Season Review

A lot has happened as we hit the end of the season, mostly positive

 

The club awards were shared between our strike duo, with the fans player of the season being a lot closer than in recent years

(36a) Schwitz manages to break a record in the process, but is beaten out for another award

(31a) Fellerich's contributions from AML (IF) win him the best player award, quite possibly on the strength of the assists alongside his goals

On a club level things have been happening too

The newly expanded stadium sets a new record, and gets thinking about the next steps

When this is built, I think we will be at the maximum for the stadium, so we are hopefully only a few years from a brand new stadium named after the greatest manager in Rosport history (or one of his proteges anyway).  It will be interesting to see the breakdown between seating and standing with this expansion.

Any new stadium should really wait until we turn professional, which relies on a good couple of seasons in Europe, although due the nature of football in Luxembourg so far in the save we are now the biggest fish in a small pond, but teams from other countries are not looking to poach our best players, so the rush to sign players to full time contracts to avoid losing them cheaply isn't there, the benefits will be on the training side of things, which would probably make the league easier and give us a better chance in relation to Europe.

The loan taken out means we now owe the bank £750,000 over four loans, although the first of these will be paid off by the end of next season, with the second and most costly being done and dusted in two seasons.

Our finances have not dropped off as far as in previous seasons, meaning if we can secure a good European run this time around we will top £1million.

Unfortunately £400,000 is not enough to cover the costs of either planned expansion so we lose out on those for another year.  With each upgrade costing roughly £650,000 we are going to need to be at around £1.5million after a European run to be able to afford the upgrade

2038-2039 Season Preview

The fixtures are arriving and we have yet another make or break run of league fixtures

A gentle start against Boevange, with challenging games against Progres, Kaerjeng and Racing (LUX) straight after.  Having won the league three times back to back we should get through these comfortably, but we did drop points to Progres last season.

The challenging stretch comes at the other end of the fixture list.  Differdange, Titus Petange and Dudelange in a row.  4th, 3rd, 2nd from last season all in a row.  And in the second run of fixtures these make up the majority of the run in, with a final game against Boevange the only respite.  If we have not tied up the title after 22 games, then the run in could be tight, although the benefit is that with the big fixtures coming at the sharp end of the season, the metaphorical six-pointers could seal the title and with Differdange and Dudelange being away fixtures at the end of the season we have the chance to seal the title against one of our biggest rivals on their turf

We have also been through the first European draws

We are not yet seeded, and need to pretty much double our coefficient to do so

Ludogrets, TNS, Cliftonville and Qarabag would be the best fixtures.  We beat Cliftonville last season, so we are not too far behind the weakest of the seeded teams

Romania it is.

U Craiova faced our conquerors Dundalk last season.  We went down 7-0 on aggregate, and they managed a 1-0 home win but succombed to a 3-0 away loss in the third qualifying round

If we make it through this tie we seem to get an easier game next up

Due to the coefficient of U Craiova we were seeded for this draw, and while Qarabag were seeded for the first round we pushed them hard two seasons ago, with EB/Streymur being the lowest seeded team in the draw.

2038 European Adventures - Stage 1

The first leg, away to U Craiova was tough.  We lost one of our striking options in the tune up friendlies we had arrange, and (29d) Albuqueque was suspended due to cards last season so we were not at full strength.

The first leg was a 5-3 loss, but with three away goals, and a stronger team at home there was a chance of a good result

20 minutes into the second leg, (29d) Albuqueque decided that he was tired of the Champions League and got himself sent off

Defensively we held out until the 77th minute, eventually going down 2-0 on the night, 7-3 on aggregate, but with the sending off we had no chance of getting through the tie.

 

That sees us drop to the Europa League at the earliest opportunity again, which nearly worked for us last season.

We are seeded this time, which is not a huge surprise as we were one of the highest unseeded teams, and you would expect the seeds to win.  Group 3 being the teams who have failed in the Champions League

EB/Streymur could have been our opponents in the Champions League, so there would be nice symmetry there. Valletta is the toughest tie, but we should still havetoo much for all of the teams we could face

2038 European Adventure - Stage 2

A much more comfortable tie.  It was a shame to concede four goals, but as we push for fitness these things happen occasionally

For the third round draw we are unseeded once again, due to better teams dropping down from the second Champions League qualifiers

Our possible opponents are varied.

U Craiova had a coefficient of 18 and we struggled against them, so Midtjylland, Dundalk, Dinamo and Sheriff would all be a step too far.  Dundalk beat us last season before reaching the Champions League group stage, so avoiding a strong team would be good, but a chance to see if we have improved

Slavia Prague and Olympiakos are around the level of U Craiova so are probably too difficult for us

We beat Cliftonville last season, and pushed Qarabag hard the season before, so either of those, HJK or TNS would be the best options

So we get a tough draw, where we will be struggling to progress.

That will drop our coefficient a little, and hit us on the financial side of things which is a shame

It was expected, and a poor first leg left us too much to do with our best striking pair still recovering from injuries

Once they went 4-1 up on aggregate, with us needing three away goals to even up the tie we had no chance, but the draw is a positive result based on our last meeting

2038-2039 In Season Update 1 - Matchday 5

We are still unbeaten but have dropped too many points for my liking this early in the season.

Progres are always tough, and on the back of our final European tie of the season we struggled to put them away, slipping to a 2-0 hole before recovering.

Jeunesse Esch have started the season well, and are only two points behind us in the league, but we had seven shots on target and they mustered one.  While (34a) Martins has peformed well he will be replaced for the next run of games due to this poor play.  While I would expect us to score more than one in a game, allowing one goal on one shot is not good enough

Five of the easier games up coming, where we really need to gain maximum points before the tricky run that covers the rest of the top four from last season

2038-2039 In Season Update 2 (Matchday 10)

We did what we needed to in preparation for the tough run upcoming.  A slow start to the run with two one goal wins, and against Fola Esch we conceded on the only shot again, but we have started to look more like the team of last season.  Part of this is to do with injuries and players returning to fitness

This is the injuries from this season, with the two dated as 1/7/38 being carried over from last season.

(36a) Luc Scwitz has now twisted his ankle twice, both times missing a month.  (35c) Thill made it back from a broken leg last season, but has dropped off in quality, taking a couple of months to regain fitness.  While he is still of the quality to start for us, his PPA has dropped hugely and if (36a) Schwitz suffers the same fate from his second lengthy layoff then we are back in the situation from a few years ago

(38a) Povoa could step in as one of our striking options, but is currently a worse option.  If he sits on the bench, alongside (33a) Lombardelli who is a natural AMR, the wide man gets brought on by my staff (I no longer have an assistant manager), then he misses out.  Once we have a full complement I may start rotating the third and fourth striking options in as starters to help them develop further, especially in some of the easier games.

I had a long running advert for Assistant Manager, and eventually found a decent option, so negotiated a contract.  When they agreed, I fired the incumbent, but was still unable to hire the replacement as the board have decreed that we have no need for such a member of staff.  There is no option to ask for an Assistant, although in the off season I did asked to improve the wages available.  Instead I have had to go back to the board and ask for an extra coach, with Patrick Kalisa filling the role of Assistant by covering team talks, press conferences and all of the other relevant roles

Not quite on the level of what we had lined up, but an improvement on the old Assistant Manager, and all for the price of a coach...maybe the board have a plan

 

After 10 games we are top, but we have the tough games to play

Tied with Dudelange meaning our game against them will be key.  The rise of Titus Petange has slowed slightly, but they are well placed, whereas  Differdange have laboured to too many draws this season.  Hopefully that doesn't continue in the next game...

A tough draw in the cup with National Division opposition fits in the toughest run that could be created.  By the winter break we could have put one hand on the cup, or sealed our fate to start the season in the Europa League next season

 

During the run, our stadium expansion finished

I think we are up to the maximum now, so hopefully the next move is to build a new stadium.  If it is bigger than 8,050 then it will be bigger than the national stadium which would be good.  But first we have to fill the stands we have

The pitch is still in a poor position, but it doesn't seem to slow us down, and until we have maxed out our facilities and turned professional there is no point putting in fresh turf if we want to move out in a couple of seasons.  The aim will be to build up our ticket sales income to make our finances more sustainable than they currently are

Nearly a perfect run of fixtures, slipping up late against surprise package Kaerjeng who are running higher in the table than they have for a long time.  The important wins come early in the run beating the other European qualifiers from last season

Our new capacity has been reached in the big games against Differdange and Dudelange, while we were not far away against Kaerjeng and Erpeldange.  The challenge to persuade the board for the new stadium will be if we are getting close to capacity against the weaker teams, although the board have made the expansion decisions in recent seasons.  If the request comes during a good European run there is a chance that the capacity goes up

The win against Dudelange opened up a narrow gap, which we extended when they drew the next game, before our draw saw it drop to three points again.  Nine points clear of Kaerjeng, and 15 clear of Titus Petange means we are pretty much in a two way fight for the title at this point of the season

The cup could well be a fight between ourselves and Dudelange too, and we are getting easier draws as we move through with US Hostert being in the second tier Promotion Division

Through that run, we hit a milestone, and performed well during it, although we are still a way from replicating the feat at Rosport

We are reaching a period of longevity.  If the new stadium is going to be build in more than a year's time then after 20 years we will have a good chance of playing in the Jelle van der Smits stadium

Mad that you have not even made it onto the list. Can you see yourself leaving if they name a stadium after you? 

Hoping for some European success soon, looks like that financial factor is one of the limiting things holding you back at the moment. Maybe a group stage win would get you a place on the list
