Martin O'Neill shamelessly sucking up in the hope Fergie will put in a good word for him for the job in the future icon_wink.gif

quote:
O'Neill said: ``When people talk about modern day managers it is my own belief that he is the greatest in the game going back to when he took over at Manchester United.

``His record at Aberdeen for a provincial club, beating the Old Firm and taking the championship, was fantastic and he has gone on to prove himself at Manchester United.

``I know people think that he was a game away from getting the sack with that famous game at Nottingham Forest.

``But he turned that around with an unbelievable reign.

``It is an absolutely fantastic achievement to win the championship with any players but he has done it again and again despite having to change his side around with evolution.

``He has had great confidence to change it with the emergence of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and the rest.

``They won the championship again and his record has just been fantastic at a club the size of Manchester United.

``He is coming up to his 1,000th game in charge of the club and it is an absolutely remarkable achievement - and then you throw the Champions League and other successes in for good measure.

``I have the utmost admiration for him, and more than that, and I speak for every manager in European football.''

I think its the 1000th game since he became manager of the club, and people are not counting the game against Middlesbrough a couple of years back when he was away due to a family bereavement.

I'm surprised they actually paid you. Maybe I'll get one soon. I was always told dividends wouldn't be paid if they were less than a quid!

Heh, next Monday my college is being visited by none other than Mo Watkins. Its ostensibly to give a talk about Sports Law, though I can't help feeling it has something to do with him having an awful lot more time on his hands these days...

Apparently he always has a Q&A session at the end of these talks. So, good people of the United Thread - any questions you want asked of the Norris Cole-a-like?

How about -"So Mo, now you've been booted off the board, are you regretting flogging all those shares earlier in the year just to further line your already well-lined pockets?"

Failing that, chuck a can of paint over him icon14.gif

I think its customary to post this bit of the BBC preview:

Roy KEANE needs one goal to total 50 for Manchester United, and should he participate, the Irishman will be making his 600th club career appearance.

United backing for Rooney

Gary Neville insists his Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney's tempestuous England performance has been blown out of proportion.

Rooney suffered the ignominy of being substituted before half time during England's controversial friendly with Spain on Wednesday.

The teenager had been booked for a needless push on Iker Casillas and was fortunate to escape further censure for a couple more rash challenges.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson hauled the forward off before he was shown the red card and there has been fierce criticism of Rooney's petulance.

But Neville has jumped to the defence of his colleague and feels a mountain has been made out of a molehill just because it concerns England.

"Wayne has now been booked twice in 20 games for England, so why do people feel the need to start talking about his temperament?" commented Neville.

"Yes, he nudged the keeper in the back but if that had happened in the Premier League, he probably wouldn't even have been booked.

"People get carried away with England. It is like a circus every time we play, it seems to be anything but the game itself every time we go away.

"Why are people not looking at everybody else? Wayne Rooney has been built up and that is why he is the focus of all the attention now.

"Every little thing - and I am not talking about racism - gets blown out of all proportion with England. It can be players' behaviour or just a booking and people have to accept that.

"I don't think it is a case of anyone helping Wayne. Why do we have to help him? I don't believe it is an issue."

Rooney was also backed by United's assistant manager Carlos Queiroz who feels the young forward is being singled out because of his club allegiance.

Queiroz added: "Every time we play, we learn and I am sure the lessons from Wednesday night are not only for Rooney.

"They are for the whole England team. The tackles were not only from Rooney.

"Some other players have problems with some other ugly tackles, worse than Rooney.

"What I can't accept is that once again it seems like a player from Man Utd becomes the bad guy and the others the nice guys, just because we don't talk about what happened with the others."

If knee specialists ran a loyalty card system, Louis would be well on his way to becoming a gold member icon_frown.gif

Hopefully we'll have Smithy upfront with Ruud today, although I suspect it'll be Rooney :/

Can't really complain I suppose - this time last year the options were Forlan or Bellion icon_biggrin.gif

quote:
Few step up to do his bidding

By Heather Timmons The New York Times

Saturday, November 20, 2004

Manchester United has plenty of players from which to select a starting 11. The American businessman who wants to acquire the soccer team appears to be having trouble fielding his own team.

The potential suitor, Malcolm Glazer, who owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League, has still to hire an advisory banker after J.P. Morgan Chase walked away late last week.

Interviews this week with bankers and executives from eight of the 10 biggest banks in London find that none is eager to take the job, and some have ruled out working on a deal for Manchester United, a publicly traded company, altogether. They spoke on the condition they not be identified by name.

"We're not going near it," said an executive from one of the top five investment banks in London.

Glazer was deserted last week by the bankers, public relations firm and lawyers who had been aiding his effort to buy Manchester United, which has been the dominant team in the English Premier League over the past decade although it is in seventh place this season.

J.P. Morgan Chase and Brunswick, a public relations firm, dropped their client after he voted three of Manchester United's directors off the board. People close to the negotiations said that Glazer's move indicated he was planning a hostile deal, something that J.P. Morgan had advised against and was not willing to back. (On Thursday, Manchester United appointed Jim O'Neill, head of global economic research at Goldman Sachs Group and a longtime United fan, as a new non-executive board director.)

Glazer is the largest shareholder in Manchester United, which has a market value of around £700 million, or $1.3 billion, with a 29-percent stake. If he makes a bid, he needs the support of 75 percent of the shareholders to win control.

Trying to do a deal without a banker is not an option for Glazer. His personal wealth is estimated at about $1 billion, including a stake in Zapata, a holding company with a $145.6-million market capitalization, and the Buccaneers, estimated at about $700 million. But the U.S. professional football team cannot be pledged as collateral on any deal.

Several messages left for Glazer at Zapata, which is run by his son Avram, were not returned. Messages left with the Tampa Bay Buccaneer's spokesman, Jeff Kamis, were also not returned.

It is unusual for investment bankers to turn down possible deals. Indeed, competition for advisory positions on mergers and acquisitions has grown more fierce in recent years.

But the prospect of a takeover has been highly unpopular with Manchester United's management, and its millions of fans. There have been stadium protests, and some fans have apparently taken to more intimidating tactics. Thousands of e-mails, harassing phone calls and even boxes of pizza were delivered to Glazer's former advisers. Other bankers who are now reluctant to work on the deal admit that is part of their trepidation.

"Do you really want to be the bank that gets paint bombed for the next 10 years by enraged fans?" a banker asked.

Great story in UWS - it's one that you just hope is true...

During the 'Battle of Old Trafford (pt 3)' all the Arsenal players were wearing T-shirts with '50 not out....we did it' under their shirts, ready to reveal during their love-in in front of the 'Champions Section' (sic) at Old Trafford.

The story goes that Fergie heard about this before the game and made all our players aware of it, using it as a motivational tool. He also told them to make sure they tried to swap shirts with the Arsenal players afterwards if we'd win - evidently it's pretty obvious from the TV pictures that some of our lads DID try and do that - and the Arsenal players were (for some reason) unwilling to do it icon_biggrin.gif

More about Pizzagate too ...seems that it started with Ruud saying a sarcastic 'well played' to Wenger who then verbally laid into him - Fergie told him to mind his own (but not in those words) and then the pizza started to fly. Most of the United players only found out about it when SAF entered our dressing room, prompting Rooney and a couple of others to seek retribution...seems that the reason SAF made Wes captain for the Crewe game was that it was a reward for his 'actions' in the melee that followed icon14.gificon_biggrin.gif

Thats an ever so slightly United biased version of events icon_biggrin.gif. No explanation for the fact that the only person hurt in the event was an Arsenal member of staff, with a black eye or something. Retribution indeed icon14.gif

The version of events on Arsenal forums is that Nistelrooy got into the Arsenal dressing rooms and did some taunting, Fergie threatened Arsene, etc etc.

We'll never know what really happened.
