FM12 Aston Villa - Surely not Mcleish?!

Villa fan irl. Managing them at the moment. Sitting pretty at 6th in the EPL after 22 games. 3 points seperate me from 3rd place. Come on you Lions!

First season signings are Ryan Shawcross and Marc-André ter Stegen. Also picked up Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer, but he doesn't join until 1.7.2012.

Nice, Shawcross is an absolute beast.

Just finished the second season, finished a disappointing 4th, injuries ruined everything.

Before the prize money from the EPL came through I was 12M in debt so I've decided to sell Warnock, Petrov, Ireland and Delfouneso and just bring forward some youth players instead of buying. I have a lot of killer regens coming through, maybe too many, anyone else have that?

same as in my game then. i have been scouting in russia and found 2 total bargains. got an 18 year old AMR who is already 2 stars with a 4 1/2 star future and he cost me 5k. also got an 18 year old AMC from anji with a 4 star future for 10k. even if both dont reach their potential i cant complain. through the club set up i got two good regens with 4 star futures and picked up a striker for 150k from belgium with a 5 star future and hes got a star at 15. i think this game is going to end up being very easy when it comes to putting together a good team with spending little money.

ter Stegen has been a revelation since signing in January, conceding only 3 goals in 8 appearances with 5 clean sheets. 4th in the Premier League after 29 games. Blackburn next, followed by West Brom, before a tough run of games including Man City twice (1 in FA Cup), Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

EDIT: Annoyingly lost to Blackburn but beat West Brom 4-1 and Liverpool 2-1. Out of the FA Cup after a 3-1 defeat at Eastlands.

EDIT2: Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea. Results elsewhere went my way and I'm now 2nd in the EPL, 1 point ahead of Arsenal and Man City, 12 behind Man Utd.

...actually starting to believe that I can finish 2nd. Luck, it seems, is on my side.

Nice, you've had a much better start than I did!

Although the start of my 3rd season is impressive beyond belief, involving 2 Bent hat-tricks in a row!

Just thought I'd share the amusing (to me at least) thing that just happened to me. Ashley Young got offered to me for 6M so I thought why not? But I rejected his contract demands because he wanted a 4M "loyalty bonus"! The cheek of it!

How do you get Tevez to sign? Im the only club infor him. City accepting 18m over 4 yrs. his agent wont let me offer a contract :( I declare my interest in the press & Tevez says he would be willing to see what I offered if I bid....if I bid? Ive bid 4 or 5 times now? Its his agent. Any suggestions?

Going quite slowly as im only in Jan in the 1st season. Just cant get the same time anymore to play it but I am really enjoying it when I do.

Curently 3rd after 19 games. :)

I know some people have managed to sign him for Villa, but I'm in my 3rd season and he's still in Man C's reserves.

I've had several bids of around 5M accepted in the last 2 years and I can offer a contract, but I can't (and wouldn't) offer what he wants.

I do feel that isn't unrealistic. I don't think a footballer of even Tevez's quality would turn down a contract for 80k/w when they've been in reserves for 2 years.

Just about to start my 3rd season having won the league cup in season 1, and finishing 4th in season 2.

I took Randy's money and spaffed so much of it he's left the club! I'm an idiot! We got into a £20m hole even though I got

us to the Europa League Quarters and loaned out as many players I could to get the wages down.

I honestly thought I was going to get sacked but General Krulak took over and I'm still in a job.

Important lesson Gents, yes you can put transfers onto 48 month repayment schemes, but be warned - our

Chairman doesn't look that far ahed.

I never buy players in months anyway because i always think of it as a cheating a little bit, no point in having budgets otherwise. I tend to look at the balance aswell when i get given budgets so as to not go in the red. Investing in youth on small wages can really bring the wage bill down in the long run aswell.

I've spent a lot in the first two seasons and will have to be more careful now, but I have controlled the budget enough so that if I achieve my aims, the prize money will cover the cost, and those aims are very do-able, only EURO qualification. That way if I achieve my goals the balance is fine, if not, I'm sacked anyway so what does it matter?

Finished first season in 2nd place. Looking forward to the challenge of Champions League football with this squad I have. As an added bonus, blues got promoted and I can't wait to do the double over them.

Hello gents, I'm not playing with Villa yet (not confident enough in my ability in FM12 to do good enough!), but I just want to post this little nugget my news feed showed me in my Malaga save:

i always go over 48 months in the first season because i don't usually spend after that. as long as it's not a HUGE amount every season after this one (10m or so) i've got no problem with it. bring in some decent youth and develop, i don't need to be spending after the first season.

finished my first season with villa in 4th

on my 2nd season now and clark, bannan, delph and albrighton have all been sensational for me

loving my save

having a bit of difficulty getting into it to be honest. time for another serious crack. i found some really good youth in my first save but i really can't remembre who they are.

well, will buy another young striker to rotate and start gabby and bent because they've been pretty sensational irl.

keeping a villa midfield of bannan, delph, ireland, zoggy cos think they're dead good. will splash out a little on defence and a backup gk when i've worked out what i need.

tempted to keep trying to play with a back 3, had a cool tactic worked out but deleted it. and an extra mdfielder (though selling petrov) is something i'll proabably do. really hope to get into it this time

Any help with the start of the game? Any transfer targets or tactical advice on how to get the best out of the promising kids and Bent?

I have signed Alderweireled, Sigurdsson and Sinclair.

Thinking something like:

Given

Hutton - Alderweireled - Dunne - Warnock

Delph - Petrov

Gabby - Sigurdsson - N'Zogbia

Bent

Whilst bleeding in the likes of Clark, Bannan, Sinclair, Albrighton

Any ideas/advice on tactics?

Started my first Villa save over the weekend. Not really expecting big things in my first season but should comfortably get top half and then will kick on from there.

Going to spend the first season clearing the dead wood (At any cost), and try and bring in some solid players around the 25 year old mark so they have a little bit of longevity to them and create a team playing good football.

Transfers In: Michael Owen (£700k), Kolarov (£5m), Willians (£12m).

Out: Petrov (£2.5m), Beye (£250k)

Loans Out: Lichaj, Baker, Lowry, Herd, Johnson, Weimann, Parish.

Bringing in Owen kind of goes against my policy of bringing in players with a few years left in them, but I can't be relying on Heskey if an injuries were to creep in.

My Team lines up like:

Given

Hutton Cuellar Dunne Kolarov/Warnock

Willians

Delph Bannan Ireland

Bent Agbonlahor

Bench: Clark, Guzan, Collins, Jenas, Owen, Delfouneso, Gardner.

I seem to have recreated real life with my team being the draw specialists, sitting in 15th after 8 games. Including losses to Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea. Only picking up 1 win (To Swansea on the opening day), and picking up 4 draws against Wolves, Norwich, Sunderland & a more creditable one against Man City.

Just need the players to start gelling a little bit better and I should be set as the performances have been decent enough. Bent just is not scoring for me :(

well thats a bit silly... its how almost all deals are done irl... its dangerous doing it as you end up paying it over seasons and seasons... thats the downside...

Froze whilst saving as i got to january at 6th place in the league and then couldnt load my save when i tried just now, if and when i start again i think im going to use the editor to put heskey as a free agent its so annoying hes on 60k a week doesnt play 1 minute of first team and then leaves on a free at the end f the season anyway..

both bent and gabby were misfiring so i brought in tevez in january and he has been phenomenal

20 goals in 21 apps and now we are in the semis of the ucl but not doing as well in the league sitting at 6th

WTF did you do to get Tevez!! I tried about once a month until he signed for Spurs about 3 days after they beat me to 4th on goal diff, 1st season. Grrr....

WELCOME CHAP!

not sure to suggest by way of tactics, yes, what you suggested the 4231 would probably work for this villa team. n'zog needs to be on the right however, gabby left, both cut inside on inside forward / attack

just play with the roles and duties of the rest after you've watched them a few times, there are so many permutations that what works for me might not work for you. the roles/duties settings in latter day fm has meant it's' soooo easy to design your own tactic and tweak it as much you like or don't at a later date.

personally i'd lose dunne and warnock as they're not great defenders, clark is already pretty good and the likes (just in the defence) of chris herd, derrick williams etc who are all i believe stars of the future

Got him only in the January transfer window of my 2nd season. Signed him on 130k/w with huge bonuses tho. Glad that he's performing well :)

if at first you fail mr kidd, try try again mr wint. probably before your time;)

i'm going all guns blazing with kidd. i never get rid of pesky but will let him go next summer if i cant in jan. i always get rid the whole defence and reckon could've got more for collins and petrov, though irl i dont reckon they'd command big fees.

wldnt bother with tevez, NOBODY ruins my strict wage structure of 5600k per week. sorry, meant 650k.

try the entire youth group - the half decent ones - in my squad in pre-season. herd could start at cb/stopper i reckon. clark is in, williams. will bring in some CHEAP mental experience as well. i find danes are always good at being cheap yet excellent defenders.

just finished my 1st whole season as villa manager in 2014. came 2nd in the league behind man city on goal difference. only lost 1 game but too many draws cost me the title in the end. won the league cup beating stoke and sunderland on the way before seeing off wigan 2-1 in the final. i was helped by the fact all the big clubs went out early and i never had to play any of them. in the fa cup i went out in round 5 to chelsea. i picked up some good signings in the summer including saloman rondon from malaga, kieran gibbs from arsenal and free agents lars bender and joe ledley.

my 1st team is now Ospina, Chandler, Gibbs, Skrtel, Clark, Gago, Bender, Navas, Delph, Adam Johnson and Rondon. I sold Bent as i still have Babacar, bought a wonderkid and i only use 1 striker anyway. in the champions league i drew Barcelona, Lyon and Kobenhavn. Ouch!

vertonghen is a good sweeper, like his stats, used him b4. *but* if you scout him you'll note he doesnt like important matches. so i avoid him. i need players who will come up big for the club in those big games.

i'm struggling at the mo. i've managed to build a team using 8/11 existing players. have a new GK as given wont last forever and bought mads albaek as ML. was gonna play bannan there but he's wasted on the flanks. i've gone for a bannan/delph CM which will last years. some of bannan's balls are just sublime. still need to determine what i want at DCC (playing a back 3, i like the challenge, and it offers options to play a wide range of systems).

i've clark dcl and herd dcr. both looking good.

only conundrum for me is how to play gabby and bent upfront ~ assuring they get the right service etc, ensuring they have the right roles/duties. but thus far my passing around the midfield is excellent (i have 8 players set to roaming including DCL and DCR so they will close when they feel, not when instructed

conundrum chaps. i'm really priding myself on bringing on the youngsters this season.

my starting line up at the mo is:

GK: GIVEN (BUT THAT'S ONLY BECAUSE MY GK TARGET DOESNT WANT TO JOIN

DCL CLARK

DCC THORDTVEIT (ONE OF V.FEW PURCHASES)

DCL CLARK

DCR HERD

DMC/DLP BANNAN

DMC SUPPORT DELPH

ML ALBAEK

MR ZOGGY

TREQ IRELAND

STRL GABBY

STRR BENT

i've a feeling i'm gonna get hammered and relegated, but i DID reduce the wage costs and have thus far spent 4m on transfers.

shame is i had a 3232 tactic working yesterday, but i've over-tweaked it and it hasn't been effective my last 2 games. so i'm setting up 2-3 friendlies against real minnows to give the players a chance to settle on my system. i have SEVEN players roaming, and, when it works, it's a joy to behold. just so keen to get a back 3 to work in the ME , and it's a hell of a challenge.

anyway the conundrum is do i bring in a better DCL and DCR or keep clark and herd there. i've just delayed the transfer of Vadim Demidov for a week give me a chance to re-look at herd.

really tough one. i've got SO much funds available now having sold the old backline and petrov. guess i could rotate demidov and herd.

also, i have no *marquee* signing cos i don't know who i could possibly replace. i'm quite happy to spend 20m on the right player, but who can i ditch? really wanna develop delph, and i love his aggression. normally i'd buy arouca but he'd take the place of either delph or bannan and these two i really want as my CM partnership.

darn, decisions, decisions.........

Link to post

To play in a such intensive EPL , I wouldnt choose Delp or bannan to be played in MC rather than ML . They both have great speed to be a good winger or good wide midfield.

WELL, it'll take time but with a load of development they will both be massive. i've got them both on high strength training. i usually play bannan out left but from the centre some of his passes have been sublime.

could put them both as CM with an anchor behind i guess, but that wouldnt work with my tactic.

still unsure about getting demidov who looks good but herd has been great for me as DC. like his aggression too.

i had a rethink. at home i'll play delph/bannan as dms, and i've given them both intensive tactics and defence training and have the next couple of years in mind.

but i experimented with a destroyer next to bent, bannan on the left. worked a treat. still don't reckon i'm getting the best from bannan there, his passing in the middle of the park is a joy to behold: reminds me of a beckham or scholes. but i'll work on bannan left.

discovered andre santos at sporting (por) and figured, no chance he'll cost a bomb and won't want to join .i never get my asst man to filter out targets cos there are some randomly generated hidden atttributes determining whether he'll filter the right players. so i filter by value, wage etc and hope that these are the players interested in joining. wouldn't want to miss out on a gem my asst man says wasn't realistic but who was.

anyway, bid 6m because he was valued at 3 and looked really good as a defensive midfielder with intelligence and all the right stats.

bid accepted! so i probably could have got him for 5. anyway, his agent said he'd need a mega-offer to consider the move. i offered some high signing on/agent fees but kept the proposed wage to 65k cos i won't break the budget and ever pay more than bent gets. they said "very acceptable offer". bizarre. he looks quality and was sooo easy to get. i'm sure i could have saved on it too.

EDIT

i meant i experimented with a destroyer next to DELPH. 2 destroyers. cool!

Link to post

...and i finally decided to buy demidov. Quality, not pricey and i couldn't go the whole season with only clark and herd as outside dcs. Have played demidov instead of clark first, because herd is a revelation. Has made a couple of errors but generally closes down his man and gets the ball.

I *did* however up his pa in the db to that of some of the other promising youngsters. Seems in the db he is highly under-rated

Link to post

also found some settings that get the best out of zoggy. i found he was isolated as AMR/IF but i tinkered around and found a way of people getting the ball to him and him working his magic. i do believe my tactic is now 90% sorted. starting to get some decent results against decent teams

Started a game with Villa and gonna try to keep a policy of bringing youth through. My only exception was signing Beram Kayal from Celtic. Really need a tough tackling DM, to allow a bit of flexibility in my tactics.

My other signings are:

Lucas Anderson - AaB - £850k

Oliver Duffy - Wycombe - £85k

Harry Maguire - Sheff Utd - £250k

Jamaal Lascelles - Nott Forest - £1m

Jo Inge Berget - Molde - £500k

Christoph Moritz - Schalke - £2.2m

Except for Moritz, (replacing Jenas, who I sent back to Spurs) the others are in the reserve team at the minute. Enda Stevens has arrived too. Trying to sell Heskey but no one wants him. Think hes gonna end up just playing his contract out.

Generally, I switch between two formations.

Season 1 - Review

League:

Picture16-1.png

Cups:

Picture17.png

Summary:

A good starting block. Having Man Utd and Arsenal in the last three games of the season really set us back, but I'm happy with being in Europe and will give the youngsters more game time in that. Leaving the more senior players to concentrate on the league.

Gutted at losing to Spurs at Wembley. Would have made a good season a great one. We were a goal down after a minute. Lack of concentration at the back let Defo through and he was never going to miss. That kicked our arses a bit, and we got back into the game on eleven minutes, Bent scoring a penalty, won by Stilian. On about 60 mins, poor marking from a corner let the smallest player on the pitch score. Aaron Lennon. We piled on the pressure from that moment on but they held out. An FA Cup semi isn't to be sniffed at though.

Some big improvements in the youth in my first season too, which is very pleasing. Clark is now a major first team player. Delph and Gardner have made big stat improvements too. Harry Maguire, who I bought from Sheff Utd for peanuts, is also very capable in the more minor league games and has time on his side.

Then there's Jo Inge Berget, who has been superb since joining from Molde for £500k. Playing a trequartista role next to Bent or Gabby, he consistently outplays his stats. I highly recommend him.

Top Goalscorer - Darren Bent (21)

Top Assist maker - Marc Albrighton (15)

Most MOTM awards - Darren Bent (7)

Player of the season - Shay Given

Young Player of the season - Ciaran Clark

As for next season. Guzan will be leaving as he cant renew his work permit. So a new goalkeeper is on the cards. Siegrist will be a decent backup soon, but I might send him out on loan next season. Others that will be leaving are Carlos Cuellar, Habib Beye, Emile Heskey and Shane Lowry. All of whom, are nowhere near the side anymore. Just sold James Collins to Southampton for £1.9m too. Clark, Maguire, Dunne and a new signing will fill the CB slots next year.

Roll on next season back in Europe! Got some nice replacements for the oldies coming in.
