That Hitchcock bloke had nothing on you for tension Kip.

Funny thing was I was gonna post a Q the other day regarding have any clubs come in for Gamble.

Would have looked a well smart bugger now wouldn't I. Story of my life that.......

I would like to think that Gamble will progress onto the premiership to be followed sharply by the bandits. He might even come back one day in true football manager fashion!

Can't see relegation being on the cards hope they get in a manager of equal ability if not better I feel a Sven Goran Eriksson type coming on someone who wont be afraid to spend the money.

Come on Kipfizh the tension is unbearable.

Hey Kip, I couldn't find screenshot of Ryan Morley playing for the Bandits. Which number was assigned to Morley while he was playing for them? I want to ask a friend of mine to make me one Bandit shirt with his name and number. It will be actually tribute to all supertalented Bandit players. icon_cool.gif

Interesting logic going around! Full update will be coming later, but I can tell you that despite the Bandits losing on the final day, they were successful in what they set out to do that day, whether it was to reach the playoffs or avoid relegation.

Meitheisman: They don't actually sell the ground out at all, their top attendance last year was 107k, their lowest 80k. So far, the capacity has only been used for later cup matches.

Ryan Morley was number 10 icon_smile.gif

Thanks Kipfizh.

About Kipfizh calling in sick at work I'd push it a little further... Kipfizh should quit your job and work full time on giving us updates, this thread has over 100,000 views imagine if we all gave Kipfizh $1 to read his story he'd probably be making more than he is at his current job icon_wink.gif

It seems it was all going a bit too well. After four seasons of Championship comfort, Danny Gamble bought only a right back in the summer, selling a few first team players and quite a few reserves. Without any new impetus in the squad, especially in midfield, the Bandits started poorly, and spent the first few months sliding in and out of the relegation zone.

In early December, Gamble paid for his achievements in the previous few seasons – the team were now expected to be in the top half, and with them languishing down in 22nd he was fired.

Luke Spicer, the 61 year old assistant manager, took charge as a caretaker, and despite his modest stats (CA 103, PA 117), he stabilized the club and took them closer to mid table. In February, after two months in charge, he had the club 17th, at the point when a new manager was finally appointed.

That man was Phil Edwards (CA 108, PA 120), a 58 year old who does not look an ideal replacement for the excellent Gamble. And throughout the rest of the season, the Bandits slipped further down the league, to be in the relegation zone with only a few games left.

A win over relegated Notts County lifted them out of the zone, but going into the final day they were left with a feeling of déjà vu. Six years ago, just after Gamble had taken over, the Bandits were stuck on a relegation knife edge in League One. Going into that final day, they were just ahead of Boston, who ended up going down despite the Bandits losing.

Boston have since joined the Bandits in the Championship, and once again it was one from two – with Boston just a point behind going into the final day, a win would guarantee safety for the Bandits, while any other result would open the door to their rivals.

At half time, things looked bleak, with the Bandits trailing 1-0 and Boston winning 1-0 – even a draw for the Bandits wouldn’t be good enough. However, Wolves secured a 1-1 draw with Boston, so for the second time in their history, the Bandits escaped despite losing 2-0 themselves, surviving by a goal difference of just two goals.

In the cups, they made a little progress, the highlight being a win over Premiership Aston Villa in the League Cup second round, but even this couldn’t disguise a season in which they took a big step backwards.

Edwards does not seem to have Gamble’s ability. Can he take his squad and add some decent players to it, so he can get by? Or are the Bandits likely to be facing their first ever relegation in the next few seasons?

2034-, West Ham (assistant manager), CA 170, PA 170

2031-2034, Tottenham (assistant manager), CA 110, PA 110

At the end of the season, he is rewarded by being appointed full time manager at Chelsea – one of the top jobs in the entire game. Congratulations to him for making that step up – how will he do?

Other stats

England won all three games in their World Cup group, but went out in the second round to Turkey, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Ryan Morley came on as substitute in all four games, scoring once in the group stages, but he missed a penalty in that crucial shoot out.

Scotland ended up getting further than England, coming third, but it was France who retained the World Cup, hammering Brazil 3-0 in the final.

England have, however, started their qualifying campaign in the traditional way – three wins and no goals conceded.

Arsenal should’ve won the Premiership with ease, but an inability to win any of their last few games handed the title to Chelsea, who leapfrogged them on the final day. West Ham and Leeds, as always, remained near the top of the league, while Liverpool struggled in the bottom half.

The real story was Man Utd, however, who never recovered from an awful start (four points in their first thirteen games), and were comfortably relegated, finishing nine points from safety. This is the third time they’ve suffered the Premiership drop – on the previous two occasions they bounced back as Championship winners – can they do so again?

Premiership

Scunthorpe won the FA Cup, beating Leeds in the final, while West Brom claimed the League Cup ahead of Man City.

In Europe, the dominant Real Madrid surprisingly lost in the Champions League qualifying round, opening the door for the rest of Europe, and Arsenal took their chance, beating Seville to become champions of Europe again. Real Madrid made amends in the UEFA Cup, eventually defeating Ajax in the final.

Summary

It’s been a shocker. The only worry I had about Gamble is that after one poor season he’d be sacked, as he had raised the bar so high. In reality, he was only afforded half a season, before being fired just before Christmas. In truth, his transfer activity in the summer wasn’t wise, when given the chance to push forward he took a large step back and opted for stability when the team wasn’t good enough.

Their new manager, Phil Edwards, looks worryingly like he doesn’t have the ability for this level. How quickly will the board realize, or will he surprise us all?

Right Mid 1 is now manager of Chelsea, the only former Bandit to have made that step. It may have been forced upon him, as the club have had no manager for two years now, but however he got there, he is now the man at the helm. How will he do, and will others follow his lead?

Man Utd, for the third time, are back in the Championship. Only this time they got relegated by a considerable margin – can they bounce back as they have done on the previous two occasions? And how will they do against the Bandits?

England failed badly in the World Cup, losing to a Turkey side they would’ve walked all over when the ex-Bandits were playing. Is this the beginning of a lean spell?

Next season could be an anxious one for Bandits fans.

Bandit’s former manager watch

After Justin Edinburgh got relegated from the Premiership with Everton, he retired.

Steve Brackstone narrowly avoided relegation from the Premiership with Sheff Wed, finishing 17th.

Gary Perry was sacked by Sheff Utd with them 17th in League One and expecting a promotion challenge. They finished 16th. He then joined Bolton with three games remaining, and them fourth in the Championship. Despite a dodgy start, he masterminded the final day defeat of the Bandits to seal a playoff spot, but they lost in the semi finals to Swansea.

Dean Glover has retired.

Martin Lawton decided to jump before he was pushed, with his Yeovil side 23rd in League One, but they never recovered and finished in that spot. He was eventually hired by Blackburn, 20th in the same league, and impressively took them up to eighth.

Danny Gamble was hired on Boxing Day by Stoke, 15th in the Championship, and raised them one spot to 14th.

The Bandits gained a serious amount of money this season, with a 29m income from ‘investments’ – is the chairman suddenly shrewd?

Strangely, despite the extremely poor season, the number of players interested in joining rose a small amount to a record 7720, from last season’s 7702.

Three players over 140 CA allowed to leave, all for a couple of million admittedly, and only one such player signed – it’s not rocket science to say that’s the wrong way around. Stephenson looks like a potentially stunning signing, at 22 he has plenty of years in him and is already of a high quality, but the 4.6m it took to bring him in should’ve been backed up by a few more.

The top range of players still contains plenty of individuals with time on their side, so in theory the squad isn’t weak, and certainly shouldn’t be battling relegation. A couple of shrewd signings in a summer where they let no-one leave would be perfect, but have they now got the manager to make the right choices? I’m not so sure.

From 140 down the numbers are dropping, and the squad is definitely weaker than this time last summer. Add to that the fact that the manager is also weaker and you have worrying times ahead for the Bandits.

The ‘Ryan Morley’s of the world

Ryan Morley now has a CA of 180, closing in on his potential of 186, and he is now a first team regular at Chelsea, scoring twenty goals this season, helping his team return to the Premiership summit. There were no individual awards to go with his fine season this time around, but he was involved in England’s World Cup squad, coming on in all four matches, and scoring against Croatia.

Given that he is almost always a substitute for England, his scoring record of 21 goals in 18 caps is truly astonishing.

How the Bandits could do with him now.

Team analysis

Goalkeepers

James Wade (23, 155/164) is now the undisputed number one goalkeeper with the Bandits, and is playing very well. His backup, Rob Spellman (31, 150/150), remains on the transfer list by his own request.

Summary: Wade is doing a fantastic job as has recently signed a new contract, but Man Utd are interested in the stopper.

Defenders

Ricky Holmes (23, 147/155) remains the first choice left back, and is playing reasonably if unspectacularly. Martin Stevens (29, 123/125) remains his backup, but has since become first choice again as Holmes has been forced into the centre.

After the previous first choice right back, Allison, was sold in the summer, Gamble brought in an excellent replacement in Matt Stephenson (22, 146/161), who is shining. James Bevan (21, 126/134), another new signing, backs him up when required.

Matt Nicholson (24, 143/153) lost his central defensive partner of Jon Robbins in January, and since then left back Ricky Holmes has filled in. They desperately need another specialist centre back, although they do have real potential in Gary Small (18, 108/167).

Scott Tillen (21, 131/148) has been frozen out since he agreed to join Sheff Wed at the end of the season.

Summary: They need centre backs, and badly, but otherwise the defence is okay.

Midfielders

James McDonald had seemed to be a great signing at left winger, but after he was sold the Bandits were left without much cover. Aaron Johnson (24, 119/119) was signed and has become first choice, but really isn’t good enough for this level. The cover in this position is pitiful.

On the right, Scott Nicholson (31, 127/136) remains first choice, but his CA is dropping alarmingly quickly, and he must be replaced, although he did play well this season. Jonathan Devlin (29, 119/119) was signed as cover, but beyond that there is no-one.

Colin Harris (24, 151/157) is again being wasted in an attacking central midfield role, when his stopping ability should be utilized, and as a result is still playing appallingly. Matthew McKenzie (34, 142/148) continues to impress alongside him, but age is very much against him. The Bandits continue to ignore the huge holes in central midfield, as there is absolutely no backup.

Summary: They need new players everywhere. Johnson is not good enough on the left, Nicholson is getting old on the right, one central midfielder is being played out of position and the other is 34. A whole new midfield is required.

Strikers

Craig Hutton (25, 148/148) remains first choice up front, scoring 15 goals and playing to a good standard. His partner throughout the season was one of Rob O’Neill (25, 147/148) who scored 14, and Pat Mike (33, 104/112), who managed 10. There are no good youngsters coming through, although Paul Leary (27, 119/119) provides some cover.

Summary: O’Neill and Hutton are fine, but Mike cannot keep up his performances much longer and replacements are required sooner rather than later.

Last season’s shopping list:

Left Midfielder – not signed

Right Midfielder – not signed

Central Midfielder – not signed

Striker – not signed

From that, it’s plain what’s gone wrong.

Summer shopping list: Left Midfielder, Right Midfielder, Central Midfielder (x2), Striker

An entire midfield plus a striker required.

First XI Summary

GK: Wade (23, 155/164) – 7.24

LB: Stevens (23, 147/155) – 6.48

CB: M Nicholson (24, 143/153) – 6.88

CB: Holmes (23, 147/155) – 6.72

RB: Stephenson (22, 146/161) – 7.03

LM: Johnson (24, 119/119) – 6.61

CM: Harris (24, 151/157) – 6.43

CM: McKenzie (34, 142/148) – 6.96

RM: S Nicholson (31, 127/136) – 7.00

ST: O’Neill (25, 147/148) – 7.03

ST: Hutton (25, 148/148) – 7.14

Average age – 25.3 (down from last year’s 25.7)

Average CA – 142.9

Average rating – 6.87

The age of the team is now extremely low, with only two players above 25, and the entire back five 24 or younger. So that isn’t a problem as much as the weaknesses apparent in midfield. Two old, and two not good enough.

Sign a midfield, and the Bandits might be flying again.

On a separate note, can I just take a moment to ask you a few questions about what you like/don't like about the thread:

Which sections do you look to with the most enthusiasm?

Are there any sections you tend to gloss over (too much text/not interesting information, etc)?

Are the last two sections analysing the first team useful?

And are there any other sections you'd like me to consider?

Thanks icon_smile.gif

How very frustrating! First I fancied they may be struggling, whether this was any kind of knowledge or just going against the grain I can;t say and my silence at the time can never prove! Secondly with Gamble gone I worry there may be lean times ahead for us Bandito's.

I find the whole thing fascinating, particularly the ex-Bandits post playing careers. The only extra topic I personally would enjoy is an update on how Norwich are getting on but i'm guessing i'm in the minority on that one!

KUTGW Excellent once again.

Oh, and in response to your questionnaire, I enjoy most of the sections. If anything, the only thing I used to gloss over was some of the summaries of what the ex-Bandits were doing. I found myself (like most people here I assume) being enthralled more with how they were doing. It is worrying when I would check this thread each day before checking the West Brom results. :p

The Team analysis section is a really, really good idea. It gives us information about the side and its players that we otherwise wouldn't be able to get, or we'd have to ask for limitless screenshots and non-standard questions and the like, you know? I really enjoy reading it. icon_smile.gif

I just wanted to remind the thread in general that the amount of people on player search will also depend on the quality of scouts, ie. if you have a scout with extremely good spanish knowledge, you will have lots of spaniards or players based in spain on there.

Great thread though icon14.gif

Still not been relegated.

New manager don't know what to make of him I predict that Danny Gamble will make the Premiership before the Bandits.Frustrating season lack of new players will cost the club unless the academy starts producing some good players.Gamble did a great job for the Bandits but why did the players leave was it through a transfer request being generally unhappy or a lack of ambition from Gamble.

Is it possible to check who the bandits tried to sign if any.

This would be interesting to see in my opinion.

As to the questions I look forward to reading the whole update but i tend to gloss over the other stats area

I only took interest in it tonight as I seen that Scotland went further than England In a major championship.

KUTGW Kip

I can't see Edwards leading the Bandits to the promised land hopefully I am pleasantly surprised.

Long Live the Bandits.:p

Which sections do you look to with the most enthusiasm?

Without question the report on the Bandits season. We're all fans of the club first and foremost here and want to hear of their exploits. Even if that has drifted somewhat from the initial premise.

Are there any sections you tend to gloss over (too much text/not interesting information, etc)?

I tend to ignore the "players who now coach" section. But that's not a fault of you more a fault of the game itself. Once we knew that the players were at CAMax and PAMax wasn't very good anyway, it ceased to be interesting. (I also don't care about Justin Edinburgh, but that's the Spurs fan in me talking)

Are the last two sections analysing the first team useful?

Yes. This is after all a "what would happen if". If we lose what has happened then it ceases to be meaningful.

And are there any other sections you'd like me to consider?

If anything I'd like an expansion upon the summation. Interesting other results from around the league. Have any other LLM teams had a mighty cup run? What are the current records from EPL/WC/Europe and similar things. Are there any stellar young players coming through elsewhere. All those kinda details that help to flesh out the world.

Although, naturally, I appreciate that these are hugely tedious to look for and that the Bandits are the primary reason we're all here. So it's just me wanting the moon on a stick.

actually i really enjoy the part of ex players coaching etc. i think it's an important part of their development, and i'm a fan of the players as much as the club. Best of luck ti right mid one in his first managerial role, it'll be interesting to see if more players make it, to have competition between them. Just wish the damn patches would work on my mac...

I enjoy reading about all the things you post in the report, I do howver gloss over the player ability break downs.

It would be interesting to see who now manages all of the premiership clubs...

Are they former players? existing managers? regens?

Perhaps in the next update you could perhaps answer the question throughout the english ladder

Out of however many clubs, how many were managers/assistants at the start of the game, how many were players and how many are regens? Maybe extend to international managers too?

Not so much important who the managers are... but for the sake of curiosity if you have the time/patience icon_wink.gif
