Pre-match v Olympique Lyonnais (a) - European Champions Cup, Group C (3)

Match Preview

ECC_Grp3_Lyon_media.thumb.png.bbd33d171b82143bdf9d4e664a783803.png

The Bhoys: You're bottom of the Group on one point, with Lyon two points ahead of you on three. A win at the Groupama Stadium would set you up nicely at the halfway stage, but anything else will leave you bottom still with it all to do.

Stuniverse: That's true enough, but we'll also have two of the three remaining Group games at home and we saw against Barcelona what a huge difference our home crowd at Celtic Park can make.

We're under no illusions, though. Lyon, at home, are a formidable force and it's not going to be an easy game for us. We're prepared, we've trained well, and we'll give it our best shot.

ECC_Grp3_Lyon_preview.thumb.png.8cf52bd0c1b71b0648a7aefaddaaea92.png

The Bhoys: Away at Dortmund you went defensive and lost 2-0. At home to Barcelona you played more of your normal attacking style and nearly won, drawing 1-1 in the end. How do you approach this one?

Stuniverse: I've not decided yet. Maybe we showed Dotmund too much respect and that's something we need to be aware of ahead of this away game in France. Against Barcelona, being four minutes away from a win a Celtic Park, we surprised a lot of people. How we approach it will depend on who's fit to some extent. Our captain, Dennis Praet, will definitely miss the game. Karamoko Dembele, Ewan Henderson, Scott McKellar and a couple of others are doubtful. I haven't fully made my mind up yet.

Unavailable: Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg), Dennis Praet (twisted ankle).

Doubtful: Ewan Henderson (bruised knee-90), Stuart McJanet (tight thigh-90), Barry Hepburn (twisted knee-90), Karamoko Dembele (jaded-90), Scott McKellar (jaded-90).

Olympique Lyonnais v Celtic - European Champions Cup, Group C (3)

Team Selection

ECC_Grp3_Lyon_selection.thumb.png.5c6a613e3468098ca6e7bfb02f969ca6.png

The Bhoys: Two changes then. Your customary goalkeeper change from Premiership to Cup match and, surprisingly, Dembele on the bench. What's your thinking?

Stuniverse: We've spoken about the goalkeeper situation before. For now, Ugurcan Cakir plays the cup games and Wuilker Farinez plays the Premiership games. With Karamoko Dembele, it was simply that he was looking tired in training and we didn't think he could give us everything for 90 minutes, but we do have the option to use him as an impact sub should we need to. Mikey Johnstone comes in to start on the left-wing with Joe Willock moving across to the right-wing where Karamoko would've played had he been fit enough.

Post-match: Olympique Lyonnais (1) 1-1 (1) Celtic

ECC_Grp3_Lyon_report.thumb.png.f33f9e4ad074868196faef45afb4c2b8.png

The Bhoys: A good, solid performance. A draw's a good result away, but were you unlucky not to get a victory?

Stuniverse: Possibly, but Lyon are a very good side and they demonstrated that. I was very happy with the way we approached the start of the game. We went positive and started on the front-foot, creating a couple of good, early chances. When they had the ball, I thought we worked very hard, pressing Lyon well and making some good chances. In the last half-hour we sent Karamoko Dembele on, went more attacking, and perhaps could've knicked it but, at the other end, Lyon had chances too. I thought we were good value for at least the point, although a draw was probably a fair result.

On 25 minutes we took the lead. Joe Willock released Lawrence Shankland who slotted the ball past their goalkeeper into the bottom corner. Unfortunately, another wonder strike thee minutes later pegged us back to 1-1.

The Bhoys: Your still bottom of the Group at the halfway stage but you're very much in contention, just two points behind Lyon in 2nd.

Stuniverse: We've given ourselves a chance of finishing second and qualifying. With home games against Dortmund and Lyon to come, if the Celtic Park crowd get behind us, you never know. We haven't given up hope.

Pre-match v Dundee United (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (10)

The Bhoys: Neil Lennon's Napoli are 4th in Serie A currently, but he's keeping close tabs on Celtic from Italy and loving what's going on at Celtic Park.

The Bhoys: 2nd place Hearts beat Hamilton 2-0 to put the pressure on you to get a result. With rock-bottom Dundee United having lost their last six Premiership matches, and having only taken one point from the last 21 on offer, it should be a formality for Celtic, shouldn't it, even though you're away at Tannadice Park?

Stuniverse: On paper, yes, although Dundee United are too good to continue struggling like they are. But after we went all the way to Lyon in midweek, playing a tough away game, getting a very credable 1-1 draw, and travelling all the way back, there's some tired legs in our squad.

SP10_DundeeUtd_prevew.thumb.png.e3693288c3837e09d62ef00572661f65.png

The Bhoys: How are the fitness levels in the squad?

Stuniverse: Our captain, Dennis Praet, is definitely out as are the two lads with broken legs. Fitness wise, Ewan Henderson, Stevie Mallan, Danylo Sikan and Karmoko Dembele are all struggling.

Unavailable: Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg), Dennis Praet (twisted ankle).

Doubtful: Ewan Henderson (bruised knee-90), Danylo Sikan (bruised ankle-90/jaded 73%), Stevie Mallan (jaded-85%), Karamoko Dembele (jaded-89%).

So much praise from Lennon.

I guess Neil Lennon loves Celtic more than he hates you!

Hehehehe, @kidthekid.

I kinda thought that as well... Wait until I move to Serie A in a season or two and kick his ass!

FM has Neil Lennon down as an acquaintance on my profile. Hmmmmn.

Dundee United v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (10)

Team Selection

SP10_DundeeUtd_selection.thumb.png.34d9fedb0cd0a35d77b003ad66ac35b5.png

The Bhoys: Three changes today.

Stuniverse: Yes. Wuilker Farinez (GK) takes the gloves off Ugurcan Cakir for this league game. Ewan Henderson (MC) starts in midfield to give Stevie Mallan a rest. Up front, Armstrong Oko-Flex (SC) comes in for Danylo Sikan who's been looking a bit tired.

Post-match: Dundee United (0) 0-3 (1) Celtic

SP10_DundeeUtd_report.thumb.png.78df9656198e08ba70b09f3fc44eb3ea.png

The Bhoys: A comfortable win in the end, but it took you a while to establish your normal supremacy in Premiership matches, didn't it?

Stuniverse: I think you have to give Dundee United a lot of credit. They started the game brightly and gave us a competitive, even match for the first 20, 25 minutes or so. Once we took the lead, they seemed to lose confidence and we took control of the game. Scott McTominay wore the captain's armband with Dennis Praet out and Scott gave us the lead on 32 minutes, slotting home Joe Willock's free-kick at the far post.

After the break, I thought we exerted more control over the game and were the better team. Armstrong Oko-Flex made it 2-0 on 58 minutes after one of their defenders misjudged the flight of Ewan Henderson's corner. It was 3-0 after 70 minutes, when Karamoko Dembele's incisive pass into the penalty area found Armstrong Oko-Flex's run and he slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for his second goal of the game.

The Bhoys: 10 wins out of 10 sets you up nicely ahead of your visit to Tynecastle Park on Wednesday night to play 2nd placed Hearts.

Stuniverse: Yes, it does. After Hearts finished 5th last season, who would've thought they'd be the closest team to us after 10 games? It'll be a difficult game, maybe the toughest we've had in the Premiership so far, but we'll be ready for the challenge.

CELTIC - NOVEMBER FIXTURES

The Bhoys: November looks like being a key month for Celtic as they face Dortmund and Lyon, in two home European Champions Cup Group C matches that will go a long way to determine whether Celtic can qualify for the knockout stage.

Also in November, Celtic play Kilmarnock in the semi-final of the Betfred Cup, as well as three premiership matches, the highlight being the away fixture at 2nd placed Hearts.

Pre-match v Heart of Midlothian (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (11)

Match Preview

SP11_Hearts_media.thumb.png.e316dad8f4e2529287fe2523e727f8fa.png

The Bhoys: Well this really is the big one. 2nd against 1st at Tynecastle Park. A win sees Celtic go 12 points clear of 2nd, whereas a victory for Hearts cuts your lead to a mere six points.

Stuniverse: It's a big game, that's for sure, and we're taking it very seriously, but we also need to be mindful that nothing will be decided today, one way or another.

SP11_Hearts_preview.thumb.png.374a79f6e9d9b64bf9f669f762e561f6.png

The Bhoys: With the Cup Semi-Final against Kilmarnock on Saturday, will you be taking that into account when selecting your team tonight?

Stuniverse: We're taking things one game at a time, as we always do, so I'll be picking a team capable of beating Hearts tonight and I'll worry about Saturday's Semi-Final after the final whistle.

Unavailable: Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg), Dennis Praet (twisted ankle).

Doubtful: Ewan Henderson (bruised knee-90), Danylo Sikan (bruised ankle-90), Joe Willock (jaded-86%).

Heart of Midlothian v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (11)

Team Selection

SP11_Hearts_selection.thumb.png.eaae6cd08569261f16b633d3d4002e88.png

The Bhoys: Three changes tonight.

Stuniverse: Yes, that's right. Brandon Williams (DR) needed some more playing time so he comes in, allowing Anthony Ralston to take a breather. Karamoko Dembele (MR) returns to the right-wing, instead of Joe Willock who's looking a bit tired. Stevie Mallan (MC) returns after a rest in place of Ewan Henderson.

Post-match: Heart of Midlothian (1) 1-3 (2) Celtic

SP11_Hearts_report.thumb.png.6a3ce447321f19de3515f1896926c380.png

The Bhoys: Hearts made you work hard for that but your winning streak continues.

Stuniverse: Yes, Hearts showed why they are right up there leading the chasing pack, but I thought we always had the edge in the game and deserved the win.

Armstrong Oko-Flex struck after eight minutes, scoring at the second attempt after his first shot was blocked back to him. After half-an-hour, against the run of play, we were caught out at the back and Hearts equalised. Three minutes before half-time we restored our lead, when Chancel Mbemba volleyed home Stevie Mallan's corner.

After the break, I thought we controlled the game, although Hearts did have a couple of opportunities which Wuilker Farinez had to be at his best to keep out. Armstrong Oko-Flex settled it for us at 3-1, in added on time, after Greg Taylor's cross was half-cleared to him.

John Robertson (Hearts manager):

The Bhoys: You're a third of the way to the split, have played everybody once, and beaten everybody to go 12 points clear at the top. That must give you confidence for the rest of the season.

Stuniverse: Yes, it does. But we still have to play everybody twice more, and then have the Championship Group to finish off the league campaign. We've won nothing yet.

Pre-match v Kilmarnock (N) - Betfred Cup Semi-Final

Match Preview

BC_SF_Kilmarnock_media.thumb.png.10b758d25c674fc515111a4a7b16641c.png

The Bhoys: A match at Hampden Park, against Kilmarnock, is all that stands between you and your first Cup Final as manager of Celtic. You beat Kilmarnock 2-0 at Celtic Park earlier this season so you're as good as in the Final against Dundee or Dunfermline, aren't you?

Stuniverse: We need to make sure we guard against complacency and do our jobs professionally. Kilmarnock are 5th in the Premiership and, with Rangers, Hearts and Hibs already knocked out, they'll fancy their chances of winning the Cup if they can get past us. We have to make sure it's us, not them, progressing to the final.

BC_SF_Kilmarnock_preview.thumb.png.5535a4e58ee32ff5cbb86e1f5df8f460.png

The Bhoys: You're strong favourites to beat Kilmarnock and the Celtic supporters are expecting nothing less. Are there any concerns with the squad?

Stuniverse: Dennis Praet can be ruled out, as can the two lads with broken legs. Danylo Sikan still hasn't fully shaken off his bruised ankle and Karamoko Dembele is looking a bit tired.

Unavailable: Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg), Dennis Praet (twisted ankle).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (bruised ankle-90), Karamoko Dembele (jaded-89%).

Celtic v Kilmarnock (N) - Betfred Cup Semi-Final

Team Selection

BC_SF_Kilmarnock_selection.thumb.png.3560d412e7c20c48616ffaae4f2d7a8a.png

The Bhoys: Celtic are strong favourites to win today and the Celtic supporters are expecting just that. Any changes from the team that won at Hearts?

Stuniverse: Yeah. Three changes. Ugurcan Cakir is in goal with it being a Cup-tie and Wuilker Farinez is on the bench. Anthony Ralston (RB) returns in place of Brandon Williams. Karamoko Dembele has been looking a bit tired in training so Joe Willock (MR) replaces him. Everyone else is as we were against Hearts.

Post-match: Celtic (0) 1-1 (0) Kilmarnock
1-1 after extra-time
Celtic win 7-6 on penalties

BC_SF_Kilmarnock_report.thumb.png.3172ac071e69e3c5b85192011a33a5b8.png

The Bhoys: Congratulations on making the final but let's not forget you were two minutes from going out. What did you make of it?

Stuniverse: We certainly made hard work of it, didn't we? I don't think anybody can argue we were the better team over 120 minutes but we didn't really do enough. We created a lot more chances than Kilmarnock did, but we were very wasteful and that isn't like us. A mistake by Anthony Ralston saw us fall behind to a fluke goal with 15 minutes to go and we went for it then, as we had to. The players knuckled down, showed great character, and fortunately got an equaliser to take us to extra-time. And then a nerve wracking penalty shootout but two great saves from Ugurcan Cakir, allowed Chancel Mbemba to put us through 7-6 on penalties.

Anthony Ralston missed his interception after 75 minutes,  taking our goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir by surprise, and Jake Mulraney’s cross somehow found its way into the back of our net.

On 92 minutes, Chancel Mbemba released Lawrence Shankland with a defence splitting through ball and Lawrence put it away.

Armstrong Oko-Flex went off injured in the 108th minute, with a foot injury, leaving us with 10-men for the final 12 minutes of extra-time. Fortunately, we came through that and won the penalty shootout.

Last season's Betfred Cup Final:

The Bhoys: You face Lyon, at Celtic Park, on Tuesday night in the Champions Cup Group. With little time to recover, you could've done without extra-time and penalties.

Stuniverse: Yeah, yes, it's not ideal, but it is what it is. We'll have to deal with it.

MCKELLAR SIGNS NEW CELTIC CONTRACT

The Bhoys: Celtic's 19 year-old central defender Scott McKellar has signed a new contract keeping him at Celtic Park until the summer of 2027.

At the same time, we understand, manager Stuniverse wanted to reward 21 year-old  Armstrong Oko-Flex for his recent good form but Celtic Director of Football Nick Hammond was unable to agree a deal with the stumbling block appearing to be around playing time. Primarilly considered an attacking midfield player, Oko-Flex has been playing up front and banging in the goals since the injuries to Fraser Hornby (broken leg) and Danylo Sikan (twisted knee and bruised ankle). Oko-Flex's current contract runs until the summer of 2025.

Match Preview

ECC_Grp4_Lyon_media.thumb.png.fcfd824aa8797ec022d657bb0dd1ce0e.png

The Bhoys: This is the big one as far as your European Champions Cup campaign is concerned. Win and you go above Lyon, possibly into 2nd if Barcelona beat Dortmund, but anything else will leave your chances of qualification hanging by a thread.

Stuniverse: I can't argue with you about any of that. If we're to stand any chance of progressing into the Knockout round we really need to beat Lyon tomorrow night. We won't be completely out of things with a draw, but the odds would be heavily stacked against us.

ECC_Grp4_Lyon_preview.thumb.png.10766e2c2ec06df6f3e57519ab43dae2.png

The Bhoys: After extra-time and penalties against Kilmarnock on Saturday, how is the squad shaping up?

Stuniverse: Not great, to be honest with you. Fraser Hornby, Tin Jedvaj and Dennis Praet are all definitely out. Anthony Ralston, Greg Taylor, Stevie Mallan, Danylo Sikan and Armstrong Oko-Flex are all struggling for fitness.

Unavailable: Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg), Dennis Praet (twisted ankle).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (bruised ankle-90), Armstrong Oko-Flex (bruised foot-90/jaded-76%), Stevie Mallan (jaded-83%), Anthony Ralston (jaded-79%), Greg Taylor (jaded-79%).

Celtic v Olympique Lyonnais - European Champions Cup, Group C (4)

Team Selection

ECC_Grp4_Lyon_selection.thumb.png.3d874716cad26bcef98dbc8f5c3bfab0.png

The Bhoys: I make that five changes tonight.

Stuniverse: Five changes in personnel, yes, largely enforced through injury and lack of fitness, but seven changes in total as we've made two positional changes on top of those five substitutions.

Two changes in defence with Scott McKellar (DC) and Brandon Williams (DL) coming in for Anthony Ralston (jaded) and Greg Taylor (jaded), Chancel Mbemba moves across to play right-back. In midfield, Ewan Henderson replaces Stevie Mallan (jaded) and Karamoko Dembele (MR) starts ahead of Mikey Johnston, with Joe Willock moving over to the left-wing. Up front, Jordan Ross (SC) takes the place of Armstrong Oko-Flex (jaded/foot).

Post-match: Celtic (3) 4-2 (1) Olympique Lyonnais

ECC_Grp4_Lyon_report.thumb.png.1fc5b1f2682f3a8cbb6498492423306a.png

The Bhoys: Congratulations. You had to win tonight and you did. After making so many changes for this match you must be delighted.

Stuniverse: Thank you. Yes, I am. I thought we were magnificent tonight. The players deserve so much credit for the way they worked and applied themselves against a very strong opponent. And a special word of thanks goes to our supporters who were on another level tonight. I've never heard Celtic Park so loud, they were noisier than when we beat Rangers here and the atmosphere that day was pretty special.

After just three minutes, Chancel Mbemba played the ball inside on the halfway line to Karamoko Dembele, who set off on a mazy dribble, beating player after playing, driving into their penalty area, before tucking his shot just inside the far post for 1-0. On nine minutes, a superb passing move from right-wing, to left-wing, back inside for Scott McTominay to set Joe Willock up for a shot into the top corner and it's 2-0. On 31 minutes, Lyon peg us back to 2-1 after Brandon Williams gets caught in possession allowing them to break down our left flank and cross into the box. On 38 minutes we restored our two goal advantage, Karamoko Dembele won the ball back in their half, ran into the penalty area, and squared the ball for Jordan Ross to score. On 42 minutes, Joe Willock hit the post.

On 53 minutes, Brandon Williams and Scott McTominay combined down the left, Williams put Joe Willock away and Joe made it 4-1 with the outside of his foot. Three minutes later, Lyon scored again to make it 4-2, when we failed to defend a long ball over the top properly. After tat, we kept our concentration and composure to see the game out.

The Bhoys: Barcelona beat Dortmund 4-0. You're second with two matches to play. Qualificaion for the Knockout round is in your own hands.

Stuniverse: That's all we can ask for really. Our last Group game is away to Barcelona so we have to beat Dortmund here at Celtic Park in our next Group game.

ECC_Grp4_Lyon_suspensions.thumb.png.993404bfc8ed99921dc868aefc68c80e.png

The Bhoys: You'll be without Ralston and Williams for the Dortmund match as they both picked up a third yellow card and will be suspended.

Stuniverse: They can't play in the game, nothing we can do about that. It's not ideal, but we simply have to deal with it.

INTERNATIONAL CALL-UPS

The Bhoys: Celtic have had 19 players called up for International duty. Scotland manager, Steve Clarke, has again left Celtic's left-back Greg Taylor out of the squad even though Scotland have failed to win since Taylor's omission.

Pre-match v Motherwell (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (12)

Match Preview

SP12_Motherwell_media.thumb.png.cee7d249766d85907b28625041f53af3.png

The Bhoys: You beat Motherwell 5-0 at Celtic Park on the opening day of the Premiership. Winning in their backyard at Fir Park should be straightforward, shouldn't it, given they haven't won in their last six Pemiershp matches?

Stuniverse: You never know in this game but we're in great form and we're very confident of gong to Fir Park and returning with all three points.

SP12_Motherwell_preview.thumb.png.1687133f474f1f5f23b6240887969c3a.png

The Bhoys: After your great win against Lyon in midweek, are there any concerns with your squad.

Stuniverse: We have some good news with our captain, Dennis Praet, back in training but our medical team say he's not ready to play 90 minutes. Karamoko Dembele needs a rest. Danylo Sikan and Armstrong Oko-Flex are both struggling for fitness and are doubtful.

Unavailable: Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (bruised ankle-90), Armstrong Oko-Flex (bruised foot-90), Karamoko Dembele (jaded-81%), Dennis Praet (twisted ankle-75).

Motherwell v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (12)

Team Selection

SP12_Motherwell_selection.thumb.png.224d71320007937270a826868a8fb56d.png

The Bhoys: Five changes today.

Stuniverse: Yes. Plus two positional changes. Wuilker Farinez (GK) is back in goal for Ugurcan Cakir. In defence, Anthony Ralston (DR) and Greg Taylor (DL), return for Scott McKellar and Brandon Williams, with Chancel Mbemba going back into central defence. In midfield, Sevie Mallan (MC) replaces Ewan Henderson, and Mikey Johnston (ML) comes in for Karamoko Dembele, with Joe Willock swapping wings.

Post-match: Motherwell (0) 0-1 (1) Celtic

SP12_Motherwell_report.thumb.png.9c37c9d34752181fd9ff849cb2a15da7.png

The Bhoys: Far from convincing, but a win is a win.

Stuniverse: It was a fairly even first-half, I thought, and, if I'm being honest, Motherwell were probably edging it until the 27th minute when Anthony Ralston hit a great cross-field ball, Greg Taylor cut inside his man, drove into the penalty area, and hit an exquisite shot with the outside of his left foot that went in off the far post.

After the break I thought we had the better of it, but we didn't have our shooting boots on, didn't work their goalkeeper enough, and couldn't add a second goal. Motherwell abandoned their 4-1-4-1 and went with a very attacking 4-4-2, almost a 4-2-4 at times, but we defended well and I thought Wuilker Farinez had his best game in goal for us. Then, of course, we were down to 10-men, due to injury, with lots of added injury time as a consequence, but we kept Motherwell at bay and held onto our 1-0 lead for the win.

SP12_Motherwell_inj.thumb.png.cdf1f6f9062bcc6f395ab895206cafbb.png

The Bhoys: Ralston's injury looked very bad. Hopefully, that's not the case.

Stuniverse: No. It is bad. Very bad. Anthony Ralston has broken his lower leg and we now have three players out with broken legs. That's more than bad luck.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

SP12_Motherwell_post-stuniverse.thumb.png.794471163157f710cf4b913f246e4c80.png

SP12_Motherwell_lgTab.thumb.png.97985d31cf243f841b6c2c0f3a47ecbc.png

The Bhoys: A dozen wins on the spin. You have to be happy with that.

Stuniverse: Yes. Of course, we are. There's still a lot of football to be played and hard work to be done yet though.

SP12_Motherwell_hopkin.thumb.png.15af5fef89adec88eba8f95f8e17c157.png

Stuniverse: I have a great deal of sympathy for him; this is an unforgiving business and managers deserve more time to succeed than we typically get.

Broken legs

In all my years playing FM, and CM before that, I don’t think I’ve ever had three players out with broken legs at the same time before. Tin Jedvaj (DR) had a broken lower leg when I arrived at Celtic Park. Since I’ve been here, first Fraser Hornby (SC) and now Anthony Ralston (DR) have broken their lower legs as well. All three are currently unavailable for selection.

Has anybody else experienced anything like this before?

The Bhoys: News coming out of Cardiff City Stadium suggests that 29 year-old utility player Calum Paterson has twisted his ankle and may be out for up to four weeks, making it touch-and-go whether he'll be available for selection when he joins Celtic on New Year's Day.

Ouch, @andychar and @rodesire. Looks like FM20 may have a thing about broken legs. I might be wrong, but I don’t recall getting any in my three seasons at Falkirk or my one season at Hibs - not to regular starters / important players / star players any way.

Pre-match v Dundee (a) - Ladbrokes Premiership (13)

Match Preview

SP13_Dundee_media.thumb.png.2f8bb07d94d103b8f34523de790d5318.png

The Bhoys: With your must win European Champions Cup Group match against Dortmund in three days time, will you be resting players tomorrow to keep them fresh for Wednesday?

Stuniverse: I don't like doing that but, on this occasion, we may have to do that, particularly in defence where we're a bit thin on the ground right now.

SP13_Dundee_preview.thumb.png.338b56cc9f3258f24fc49ea1f24cd3f3.png

The Bhoys: Not a good international break for you injury wise.

Stuniverse: You're right. Anthony Ralston became our third player to break a leg this season in our last game before the international break, and Danylo Sikan returned from being away with Ukraine nursing a pulled thigh. Other than that though, most of our other walking wounded have recovered during the break.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (pulled thigh-90).

Dunbdee v Celtic - Ladbrokes Premiership (13)

Team Selection

SP13_Dundee_selection.thumb.png.f7313c08a86feadbf89a9eee1e73aac7.png

The Bhoys: Three changes and a debut for 19 year-old Craig King?

Stuniverse: Yes. Craig King (DR) has been playing very well in the reserves, working hard in training, and we thought today was as good a day as any to give him a first-team run-out. Our captain, Dennis Praet (MC), returns from a twisted ankle in place of Stevie Mallan. Armstrong Oko-Flex (SC) starts up front, with Lawrence Shankland rested.

Post-match: Dundee (0) 0-0 (0) Celtic

SP13_Dundee_report.thumb.png.f6ad30b6d152e137da910abf4c94167d.png

The Bhoys: Well that was disappointing and your winning streak is over. What are your thoughts?

Stuniverse: It's disappointing because I thought we were the better team, and created the best chances, but we were unable to score a goal and, I thought, one goal would've won it as Dundee didn't really cause us too many problems. It's a strange feeling really because, for the first time in a very long time, I picked a team with the following game in mind. That said, I thought the team selected today was good enough to win this game and it's disappointing that we didn't.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

The Bhoys: At least you didn't lose, but with Hearts and Rangers winning yesterday your lead has reduced to 10 points.

Stuniverse: A 10 point lead, after 13 games, is pretty impressive though and we're still unbeaten in the Premiership this season.

Pre-match v Borussia Dortmund (H) - European Champions Cup, Group C (5)

Match Preview

ECC_Grp5_Dortmund_media.thumb.png.00946cca0bd0d0e389aee3092b3cc693.png

The Bhoys: You can qualify for the knockout round if you beat Dortmund and Barcelona beat Lyon.

Stuniverse: We've put ourselves into a fantastic position and we'll be giving everything we can to get the win we need, but it wont be easy. Borussia Dortmund were very good earlier in the season, when they beat us 2-0 at the Signal Iduna Park, and they'll be wanting to qualify as well. But we're at home, and if our supporters in Celtic Park get behind us, like they did against Lyon, then we have a great chance.

ECC_Grp5_Dortmund_preview.thumb.png.5e30c2d4dec7e1964d10c851a4fb66c4.png

The Bhoys: You rested some players against Dundee last time for them to be fresh for tomorrow night. How's the squad looking?

Stuniverse: Well, Brandon Williams is suspended [I forgot that when picking the team against Dundee - D'oh!] and Chancel Mbemba is looking a bit tired. Jordan Ross picked up a groin issue late-on against Dundee and we don't think he'll make it. Other than that, we're not looking too bad.

Unavailable: Brandon Wlliams (suspended), Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (pulled thigh-90), Jordan Ross (tight groin-90/jaded-78%), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg-45), Chancel Mbemba (jaded-86%).

Celtic v Borussia Dortmund - European Champions Cup, Group C (5)

Team Selection

ECC_Grp5_Dortmund_selection.thumb.png.301082bbc52f667375b768b4625633ec.png

The Bhoys: I make that five changes for your must win match against Dortmund.

Stuniverse: Five changes, is right. It's a cup game so Ugurcan Cakir (GK) takes the gloves off Wuilker Farinez. Chancel Mbemba will play right-back, with Scott McKellar (DC) coming in for Craig King. Stevie Mallan (MC) comes in for Scott McTominay. On the right-wing, Karamoko Dembele replaces Mikey Johnstone, with Joe Willock moving over to the left-wing. Lawrence Shankland (SC) returns up front for Jordan Ross (groin). We're determined to win tonight and, with the Celtic Park faithful behind us, hopefully we can do just that and defeat Dortmund.

Post-match: Celtic (1) 3-3 (0) Borussia Dortmund

ECC_Grp5_Dortmund_report.thumb.png.a0e8b3eab69590529f20c5c9a5248129.png

The Bhoys: That must be heart-breaking... to be 3-1 up with 14 minutes to go and not to win. How did you see the closing minutes?

Stuniverse: We've drawn against a very good side in Dortmund but it feels like a loss, I'll be honest. We looked good value at 3-1 but Chancel Mbemba was dead-on-his-feet so we had to take him off, and the other three defenders were all on a yellow card which made it difficult when Dortmund threw players forward. But we should've defended better and, at the other end, we had chances to score a fourth goal but couldn't take them.

We had to weather an early storm from Dortmund. On 16 minutes, Joe Willock won the ball back just inside our own half, Stevie Mallan hit a precision long ball, and Lawrence Shankland took it in his stride and put us 1-0 up from our first attack.

On 56 minutes, Stevie Mallan made it 2-0, acrobatically volleying in Chancel Mbemba's cross. VAR came into play after 71 minutes, with the referee reviewing the monitor and deciding Greg Taylor had conceded a penalty. A harsh decision we thought. Dortmund made it 2-1 from the penalty spot. On 75 minutes we restored our two goal lead. Joe Willock, Greg Taylor and Danylo Sikan combined well down the left, and Lawrence Shankland made it 3-1 with his second goal of the game. On 79 minutes, Dortmund scored a screamer to pull back to 3-2 and then two minutes later we failed to defend a cross properly and it's all square at 3-3.

On the balance of play it was probably a fair result, but we feel like we should've won and threw it away.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

ECC_Grp5_Dortmund_lgTab.thumb.png.ace30c142e3d3bee09aa9d5ca53c2dee.png

The Bhoys: You're still second with one match to go, but you're away to Barcelona. If Dortmund and Lyon draw, you'll qualify, but a win for either will mean you need at least a draw in the Nou Camp to make the knockout round.

Stuniverse: We can't be relying on other teams doing us a favour so we need to try and find a way to avoid defeat to Barcelona in the Nou Camp... if we can.

Match Preview

SP14_Hamilton_media.thumb.png.2ed3f288d64ef2d88bec23bd0ce5ee2b.png

The Bhoys: Hearts won yesterday to cut your lead to seven points, but you should make the gap 10 again after you beat 11th placed Hamilton at Celtic Park.

Stuniverse: That's the aim, and we'll be doing our best to get the win tomorrow.

SP14_Hamilton_preview.thumb.png.194e8739d173b52584800c1a98e6cdaa.png

The Bhoys: You go to the Nou Camp on Tuesday so will you have half-an-eye on the Barcelona match when making your team selection tomorrow.

Stuniverse: I don't like doing it but, yes, the Barcelona game is massive for us and I have to give us the best chance of getting a result at the Nou Camp that would see us qualify for the knockout round.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments).

Celtic v Hamilton Academical - Ladbrokes Premiership (14)

Team Selection

SP14_Hamilton_selection.thumb.png.d7d586049c4fce5134e19869bedec3cb.png

The Bhoys: A staggering nine changes today.

Stuniverse: Yes. I believe the team selected today is good enough to beat Hamilton but, I must admit, most of the changes are to keep players fresh for Barcelona on Tuesday night. Wuilker Farinez (GK) takes the gloves off Ugurcan Cakir for this Premiership game. Dane Murray (DC) replaces Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments). Brandon Williams (DR) and Scott McTominay (DC) come in to give Chancel Mbemba and Stuart Findlay a rest. Stuart McJanet (MR) replaces Karamoko Dembele. Ewan Hendeson (MC) and Paul Shankland (MC) start so that Dennis Praet and Stevie Mallan can take a break. Mikey Johnston (ML) replaces Joe Willock. Danylo Sikan (SC) starts instead of Lawrence Shankland.

Post-match: Celtic (0) 1-0 (0) Hamilton Academical

SP14_Hamilton_report.thumb.png.13196999da4d5e432178ccb468bcf4e1.png

The Bhoys: A win, but thank goodness for the late penalty as it didn't look like you were going to score from open play, even though they played over a half with 10-men. Would you agree?

Stuniverse: I think if we hadn't got the penalty, we would have found a way to score as we were so dominant we deserved to win the game. Defensively we were always in control and they had one, possibly two shots all game. Going forward we created a shed-load of chances, but we didn't get anywhere near enough on target, and we didn't work their goalkeeper hard enough.

Things could've been a lot different if our early goal had been allowed to stand, Stuart McJanet headed in Mikey Johnston's cross, but it was ruled out for offside.

On 81 minutes, Joe Willock was tripped in the penalty area and Lawrence Shankland stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

We weren't at our best, I'll admit, but we won... and that's the main thing.

The Bhoys: Back to a 10 point lead at the top but, let's forget the Premiership, are you ready for Barcelona on Tuesday night?

Stuniverse: We don't have much time to prepare for it, but we've protected as many players as we can so that they'll be fresh. We'll start our preparations tomorrow and we'll do the best we can in the Nou Camp in an attempt to get the result against Barcelona that will see us through to the next round.

Pre-match v Barcelona (a) European Champions Cup, Group C (6)

Match Preview

ECC_Grp6_Barcelona_media.thumb.png.374f26593e98ee5d9869b5e9924dd44d.png

The Bhoys: How do you approach the last Group match knowing that if Dortmund and Lyon draw in Germany then you've qualified regardless but, if either of them win, you need at least a draw away at Barcelona to progress to the knockout round?

Stuniverse: At least our hopes are still alive going into the last Group game and that's a massive positive. But, away in the Nou Camp, in front of 90,000 plus Barca fans, that's not going to be an easy game... but what a game to play in! We can't rely on the other game being a draw so we have to try and find a way to get a result away at Barcelona. It's going to be an enormous challenge for us, but a challenge we're up for.

The Bhoys: You rested quite a few players against Hamilton on Saturday. Hopefully that means the players are fit and raring to go.

Stuniverse: Greg Taylor is the only one looking tired but, given how short we are at the back right now, Greg will probably have to start because Brandon Williams is going to have to play at right-back with Tin Jedvaj not fit enough yet on his recovery from a broken leg.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments), Barry Hepburn (flu).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (pulled thigh-90), Jordan Ross (tight groin-90), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg-45), Greg Taylor (jaded-87%).

Barcelona v Celtic - European Champions Cup, Group C (6)

Team Selection

ECC_Grp6_Barcelona_selection.thumb.png.24a83eeafeae746d4aeda65567946121.png

The Bhoys: Eight changes for tonight's match in the Nou Camp.

Stuniverse: Ugurcan Cakir returns in goal for the Cup game instead of Wuilker Farinez. In central defence, Chancel Mbemba and Stuart Findlay come in for Dane Murray and Scott McTominay. We've changed the whole midfield four with Karamoko Dembele (MR), Stevie Mallan (MC), captain Dennis Praet (MC) and Joe Willock (ML) replacing Stuart McJanet, Ewan Henderson, Paul Shankland and Mikey Johnston. Up front, Lawrence Shankland starts in place of Armstrong Oko-Flex.

Post-match: Barcelona (1) 6-2 (1) Celtic

ECC_Grp6_Barcelona_qualify.thumb.png.e6f3382812aad360b35da6d7718dd0bd.png

The Bhoys: This is really surreal, given you've just been thumped 6-2, but congratulations, you're through to the knockout round.

Stuniverse: It finished 0-0, did it?

The Bhoys: Aye, it did.

Stuniverse: Well, that's brilliant. It's difficult to celebrate when we've been well and truly beaten on the night, but the players have worked so hard in these Group games that they deserve a chance to play in the knockout stages.

ECC_Grp6_Barcelona_report.thumb.png.e21e212079f9ee36a684eca80a8ca4c0.png

The Bhoys: It was 1-1 at half-time, but you were well beaten in the second-half.

Stuniverse: Barcelona are an excellent side. In the first-half we defended well and took our chance when it came. After the break, once Barcelona got their noses in front, we had to push forward to try and get back into the game and, to be fair, we would've done but for three world class saves from Marc-Andre ter Stegan to deny Karamoko Dembele, Danylo Sikan and Stevie Mallan. But the more we pushed forward, the more we left holes at the back, and that played into Barcelona's hands as they picked us off.

After just five minutes, Barcelona worked the ball into our penalty area from a throw-in, and Rodri rifled it into the top corner. On 27 minutes though, Stevie Mallan released Lawrence Shankland and he tucked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.

Four minutes after the restart, in a goal mouth scramble where we had two opportunities to clear, Barcelona managed to force the ball over the line. And then on 56 minutes, they scored again for 3-1. On 68 minutes, a good run down our left flank, which we couldn't stop, and the ball came into our penalty area for Barcelona to make it 4-1. On 79 minutes they cut us open with some incisive passing and we were 5-1 down. On 82 minutes, Stevie Mallan scored to make it 5-2 with a long-range shot that went in off the post. On 93 minutes, we got lax at the back, left a man unmarked at the far post, and he made it 6-2 when he headed in a cross from the left.

The Bhoys: You need to get this out of your system quick so that you can beat Dundee on Sunday and lift the Betfred Cup.

Stuniverse: We'll give the players a day off and then we'll knuckle down in training and prepare for the Cup Final.

FALKIRK SACK WRIGHT

BairnsNews: With The Bairns sitting a disappointing 7th in the Ladbrokes Championship, Falkirk chairman Grant Marr has today sacked manager Tommy Wright. Wright took over from Brian Rice in January with The Bairns already bottom of the Premiership. He was unable to change Falkirk's fortunes, but the Board stuck with him after relegation, believing he was the manager to take The Bairns back to the Premiership. After 16 league matches, and only four wins, the Falkirk Board decided enough was enough and fired Wright.

The three seasons of success Falkirk had under manager Stuniverse, with back-to-back promotions and a 6th placed finish in the Premiership, now seem a very long time ago.

Pre-match v Dundee (N) - Betfred Cup Final

Match Preview

BC_F_Dundee_media.thumb.png.67c9ecfe4001cf31d9376007719b16c6.png

The Bhoys: It's been a good weekend for you already with 2nd placed Hearts losing 3-0 at Kilmarnock and 3rd placed Rangers drawing 2-2 at Dundee United.

BC_F_Dundee_lgTab.thumb.png.cd26504de7cd474642d06a2f36e291e5.png

Stuniverse: Today isn't about the Premiership, it's all about getting things right on the Hampden Park pitch against Dundee and winning the Betfred Cup Final for our supporters and ourselves.

BC_F_Dundee_media2.thumb.png.2e4a6bbb1816331b75b0920a50e53052.png

The Bhoys: Last time you played Dundee you drew 0-0 at the Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park. Does that make you wary knowing Dundee are capable of getting a result against you?

Stuniverse: No, not really. We'll select a completely different lineup to the team that played that day. We're 22 points better off than Dundee in the Premiership, beat them 5-0 earlier in the season at Celtic Park, and we're confident that our captain, Dennis Praet, will be lifting the Betfred Cup after the game.

BC_F_Dundee_preview.thumb.png.0dc11798399b08a78a6a8a815d2240f3.png

The Bhoys: How's your squad looking after your heavy defeat in midweek at Barcelona?

Stuniverse: We're struggling a bit for fitness to be honest. Dane Murray is ill and we've sent him home. Brandon Williams has a tight thigh. Chancel Mbemba and Karamoko Dembele looked a bit leggy in training.

Unavailable: Anthony Ralston (broken leg), Fraser Hornby (broken leg), Scott McKellar (pulled knee ligaments), Dane Murray (cold).

Doubtful: Danylo Sikan (pulled thigh-90), Jordan Ross (tight groin-90), Chancel Mbemba (jaded-89%), Karamoko Dembele (jaded-85%), Brandon Williams (tight thigh-90/jaded-82%), Tin Jedvaj (broken leg-45).

Celtic v Dundee - Betfred Cup Final

Team Selection

BC_F_Dundee_selection.thumb.png.2623860491724ea27ba0f6abd0f7e97d.png

The Bhoys: Three changes from the team that capitulated second-half against Barcelona. We're counting on you to win the Betfred Cup today. You have to do much better than you did in the Nou Camp.

Stuniverse: We know that. We've trained well, we're prepared, we're focussed and we're ready for this one. You're right about the three changes. Scott McTominay (DC) comes in for Brandon Williams (tight thigh), with Chancel Mbemba moving out to right-back. Joe Willock moves over to the right-wing with Mikey Johnston (ML) coming in for Karamoko Dembele (jaded). Armstrong Oko-Flex (SC) starts up front for Danylo Sikan (pulled thigh).

Post-match: Celtic (1) 2-1 (1) Dundee

BC_F_Dundee_podium.png.ba3bca572485aa220e54bc5b8499d242.png

The Bhoys: Congratulations on winning your first trophy with Celtic. Hopefully, the first of many.

Stuniverse: Thank you. It's a great feeling but it's the players, not me, who deserve the plaudits. After losing to Hearts in this final on penalties last season, the players were determined to put the record straight. They deserve this. As do our amazing supporters. Hopefully the first of many, like you say.

BC_F_Dundee_report.thumb.png.21239fee919223a2202f5970954eaebf.png

The Bhoys: You seemed to make hard work of it though, and had that penalty gone in...

Stuniverse: I think the scoreline looked closer than the game actually was. I felt we were always on top and the better team. We had a lot more possession than Dundee, we created a lot more chances than Dundee, and it was only our mistakes that led to their best opportunities and they didn't have many. I think you could count their chances on the fingers of one hand.

The penalty was ridiculous, I honestly don't know what Mikey Johnston was thinking. Had Dundee scored the penalty - and let's not forget they didn't score it - I felt we were strong enough, and good enough, that we would've scored another goal. It always felt like a game we were going to win.

On 42 minutes, Stevie Mallan floated a free-kick to the far post and Scott McTominay powered a header into the back of the net. A minute into added on time, we got caught short of numbers at the back and Dundee squared the ball across the penalty area for an easy tap-in. Our concentration and defending late in the first-half wasn't good enough.

A minute after the restart, Joe Willock went on a great run, released Armstrong Oko-Flex and his shot across the goalkeeper nestled in the net. We couldn't believe it when the flag went up. On 60 minutes, we did regain the lead. Chancel Mbemba crossed into the penalty area, Dundee headed it clear, and Dennis Praet volleyed the ball into the bottom corner from just inside the D of the penalty area. A minute later though, a clumsy challenge from Mikey Johnston, and Dundee have a penalty. Fortunately for us, Dundee hit the post and we cleared the ball away.

It was fitting, I thought, that a stunning strike from our captain won the Betfred Cup for us and our supporters.

Stuniverse (Celtic manager):

The Bhoys: No time to celebrate though... You host 7th placed Aberdeen in the Premiership in three days time at Celtic Park.

Stuniverse: We do. Yes. I think there's time for a small celebration tonight, though. After all, this is what we're all in football for... to win trophies. You have to enjoy moments like this. I expect our supporters will be celebrating it. But we'll be back to work tomorrow as we prepare for Aberdeen.

Question

Are you finding that on FM20 you only get approached by other clubs about their managerial vacancies when you’re in the final year of your contract?

No, I'm on a 2 year contract and just been approached by Bournemouth. But I assume clubs would prioritise managers which wouldn't require a big compensation. That's why I always exclude the compensation clause in my contract, to attract more offers.

Ahhh, that’s a good point, @kingjericho. I normally don’t notice the compensation clause, let alone think to exclude it... More fool me 😂
