  1. So, in answer to your questions below...

@llama3Only just gotten around to downloading this, and it is a fantastic piece of work! Thank you.

Just a couple of questions concerning 433 (DM), which is my favourite formation, but one I often struggle to get working:

    image.png.a3f63890aa04dc32d5b7be60ec8d1c89.png

This is how you ended up settling on your team. The CM(a) and W(a) are both on the same flank--is that how you would recommend having them set up? I have seen some people suggest that the runner from midfield should be on the opposite side to the attacking wide player.

And also, what would you do with, for example, an AP(a) and Mez(s) combo? Because the (a) player doesn't have forward runs, while the (s) player does.

Thanks again, really appreciate the work that went into this.

It's not just the MRC & AMR you've got to consider, but also the DR too - he's a support role behind, whereas I have an attacking role on the left hand side, so don't want the MLC to be attacking too far ahead when I have a DL trying to get forward and an AML already in an advanced position. You can set them up either way round, but that was my reasoning for the balance I selected.

An AP(a) & MEZ(s) is a great combination as long as you have an appropriately defensive midfielder sat behind for balance. They dovetail nicely in fairness, the MEZ will move a bit wider (so try not to place next to a winger ideally), but the AP(a) will drive forward with the ball and play through balls. As long as you know you have the right elements in your midfield, it doesn't matter who has what duty.

  2. Arsenal one for you @Dan Ormsby

    • Chips Keswick has now retired, we don't have a chairman anymore
    • Emirates Stadium capacity is 60,704 (Premier League handbook - Arsenal pages 3-4)
    • The sponsorship page lists our sponsorship as £40 main kit and £60m away kit - our sponsorship should look like:
      • Main Kit (Adidas) £60m a year for 5 years (2019-2024)
      • Other Kit (visit Rwanda) £10m a year for 3 years (2018-2021)
      • Stadium (Emirates) £2.8m a year from 2006-2021 then it becomes £4m a year from 2021 to 2028
      • General (Emirates) £40m a year for 6 years (2018-2024)
    • Contracts, according to Transfermarkt:

A good way to plan on role and duty combinations is to think of one entire flank and then another. So basically you are looking at how you want one flank to play. You consider the roles and duties you need to make that flank operate in the way you want. For example:

Say you want to do an overload down the left flank and you want to exploit the space down the right. A good starting point is to recognise that shape in itself can prove to be a good starting point. A structured system could be more beneficial to a more counter attacking style because of the distribution of duties. Here its important to recognise fluidity in itself is useless, you just want to know its structured and then you want to identify where those duties are. So begin with the duties.

So assuming I am playing a 4123DM, I could decide that the left flank be built for overloads, and I want the system to be largely soak and hit. So how do I begin?

I begin by setting up the defensive line and line of engagement first, because imho these are the most important Tis in the whole game, since they will largely define your style of football.

Now assume that I want to be more Benitez and less Pardew, then I also want a game of attrition instead of submission. (sorry Pardew fans). My defensive line could be set to higher since I want to be playing more in midfield, I also want my LOE to be standard. Here I am willing to let teams drop in my half before closing them down. That done now i think of role and duty combinations that can help.

Ok so I build on the left and counter down the right.

On the left I could have a WB, he is more aggressive, but I don't want him on attack duty since this duty is going to see him driving to the line too much. I much rather either have a WB(S) or a FB(A). A fullback on attack duty could play the earlier pass down the line and a WB on support could be more aggressive moving along the flanks. To encourage them to pass inside i choose a narrow attacking width for the whole team.

Beside the WB I opt for a BPD(S), now I have 2 ball keepers, ahead of them I want to have a decent role that is not too defensive like an anchor man but a role that is driven more by attributes. I opt for a simple defensive midfielder or I could go for a halfback who will encourage the wingbacks to push higher. Either one is a good option. One is more conservative and the other is more aggressive and can allow my wingbacks more license, simply by having him there on the pitch.

Now I want to think of a combination down the left flank that can help keep the ball and work the ball. A natural choice would be a playmaking role and to keep that flank more creative I can add an Inverted Winger on support there. Whats interesting will be their duties.

If I want a really aggressive left flank overlaps could help with their positioning, but the use of the overlap could also reduce the mentality of the IW(S) making him take safer options. This is an interesting side effect of the team instruction. I could double things up with a focus left instruction as well. The combination of the IW, DLP/RPM and WB will be a good solid foundation.  Their traits are going to be very important. Many people ignore traits, I find that this is a mistake.

If I want to work the overloads and exploit the left then, on the left flank I am looking for players to have dictate tempo, tries long range passes and switch ball to other flanks. That has taken care of the left flank.

Now its time to think about how i want to release my attacks. Since i want my attacks to be fast and my transitions to be fast. Then passing should ideally be direct, a higher mentality will help as well. Finally who exploits the right flank? There are two options.

I could go with a really attacking CM(A) plus an IF/RMD combination on the right flank and set my fullback to a support duty.  Now I have a set of roles and duties that have considered how I want to build up play and how i want to counter.

    Ok time for strategy.

If I am playing a game where I feel like encouraging the opposition to vacate the right flank, then its actually worth considering playing with defensive width narrow. This will encourage them to attack me down the flanks. If they fail to build up attacks my counters will be down their exposed flanks. Its definitely an option along with other tricks like lowering LOE etc.

I hope this helps people articulate how roles and duties can combine to create a style of play.

So this is a superb way of thinking about it (obviously when you look who wrote it), reminds me of a really enjoyable and effective system I had on FM17. It looked like this:

    SK(S)

    WB(A) - CD(D) - BPD(D) - WB(S)

    DLP(S) - CM(D)

    RMD(A) - T(A) - IF(S)

    CF/F9(S)

What I noticed was that we controlled possession on the left, progression from BPD, CM(D) & WB(S) into the T, IF & F9 who all combined in the "number 10 zone", whereby suddenly the runs made by the MEZ (if he played) and WB(A) offer width and stretch the opponents across, whereby the RMD has moved into the area, whilst the IF, T, F9 begin to move into the area to attack the ball/sit outside the area. We slowly progressed the ball from left to centre, before the penetrating run on the right meant we were good for drilling the ball across the area, or cutbacks.

    @llama3 hi mate I am playing a 433 with an atm .

I use a complete forward but every type of attacking midfielder I choose ends up saying the roles do not work well together on the tactics screen.

Have you noticed this? I find the team play well together and the st and cam have a green line but not quite perfect.

I'm a bit OCD so this bothers me more than it should lol.

My Atm is currently a second striker but I've tried them all over this version to no avail.

Haven't noticed that. Do you mean the green analysis screen? Is this to do with suitability of the player(s) for their roles?

@Ö-zil to the Arsenal! I just want to say a big thank you for what you've done for this forum, over the years. Your threads have always given this simulator to what is many feel is complex. I know it is not a "retirement" thread, but I'm grateful for how much color you've added to the game. You're a Legend.

    Thank You.

On a rare visit - totally agree. @Ö-zil to the Arsenal! your articles give me lots of food for thought and ideas. I'm not normally short of a balanced and sensible system, but the systems I have used, inspired by your ideas on here has helped me to 9 league titles, a champions league, countless domestic cups, a world club cup, nations league, euros, world cup in a glittering 15 year career. I love learning from what other people do.

How is complete forward (Support) and Target Man(attack) partnership in STC?

You've got one player dropping off and attacking from deep and one pushing up - that's fine. It's a pairing that are quite direct in style - so I'd basically say to use it in the right circumstances. For example, I can imagine a Wing Play 4-4-2 being ideal - TM to attack crosses and a CF(s) dropping off and can pick up knock-downs, receive the ball off central midfield and act as a creative hub.

In regards to the WB roles and a winger you put an ! does that mean going into the PI and set cut inside or stay wide for one of two players on that flank?

Use with caution... So it's one you need to watch carefully and see if it behaves in the right way. If it works well, you could have a very aggressive flank, overloading the full back. If it works badly, an organised defence just sits there and stifles it, removing a potential outball because they occupy the same space.

No mention about any flat trio attacking combinations?

I don't use them ever, so not placed to give advice on them really! Principles are the same - who is providing width, are they all doing the same thing, or providing different angles/routes of attack?

  7. Champions League Winners!

After reaching my 3rd final in 3 seasons, we finally won the big one! We lost the 2024 final to Barcelona 4-2 on penalties, after a 0-0 draw. We lost the 2025 final 1-0 to Inter after extra time. I was determined not to lose this one. I was even more concerned when looking back at the results against opponents Man City and Klopp who is managing them. I won 1-0 away in a game we were indebted to De Ligt, Saliba & Donnarumma, before losing 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Emirates in a game we created little and offered too much space in behind. My record against Klopp is very patchy too and my team, whilst they've been brilliant in large swathes of the season; we started badly and were on a run of struggling to create and score by the time the final came around.

Early in the match had quite a bit of possession, but didn't do much with it. We gave Sterling a run on goal on the break and he hit the post. I tried playing on the break a bit more to see if I could minimise the space in behind and create some space behind City to work with, but we just couldn't stop City pinning us in for decent spells. I tried pressing more aggressively, it certainly improved me, but there was so little in it. Max Aarons picked up a twisted knee after about an hour and then I decided to roll the dice a bit. I took off Martinelli, Neneca (brilliant Regen winger) and the struggling Aarons - replaced them with Esposito, De Jong and Sandrinho (regen right back/centre back) and switched to a 4-4-2 Diamond, to try and overwhelm the City DM & defence who were starting to get a bit nervous. The only goal of the game came after 71 minutes. We won the ball back in midfield, pressed forward, spread it wide to charging full back Sandrinho, who laid it across the 6 yard box for Haaland to sweep home. We gradually started retreating deeper and deeper as the game went on and I became more risk averse, but we did enough, held on to win 1-0.

A board takeover incoming, I won the EFL Cup, FA Cup & Premier League again - as well as the World Club Cup at the start of the season - so going to think about taking on a new challenge, or consider if there's anything else I really want to see done at Arsenal.

I just finished the 2028 season in my Notts County save and Arsenal had one of the most bizarre seasons I have ever seen. Arsenal managed to be relegated while still winning the Europa League, so they have managed to secure both Championship & Champions League football for next season. I figured I'd share the save file here incase anyone wanted to take on this challenge.

Wow, that's a bizarre season indeed!

  9. @TheInvisibleMan my bad luck with Champions Leagues has continued. I lost the 23/24 final to Barcelona on penalties, then the 24/25 final to Inter 0-1 after extra time. Both times, couldn't break down opponents. I got a decent measure of revenge though over Inter by winning the Club World Cup in summer 2025, beating Inter in the final 3-1 after extra time. A game which frankly went much the same way, but I played on the break a bit more and thankfully it opened up some space to win it 3-1. It's literally just the Champions League I haven't won yet.

Juventus and me did quite a bit of business between us this summer - they signed Laporte, Mount and Vinicius from me. I re-signed Jadon Sancho back from them.  I've moved on Guendouzi (his agent is a *****), Torreira and Barella this summer, but signed a couple of great regens too. A Brazilian midfielder called Rodolpho (left footed, deep-playmaker) and Giovanni Lazzari from Bayern (left-footed ball playing centre back).

    Achievements so far are:

    UEFA Europa League Winners

Haven't been following this thread but currently at Arsenal on my save. What has happened to the stadium on other people's games?

I had a news item at one point mentioning planning permission for an expansion of the Emirates had been blocked by the council, but then nothing since then and the option to discuss it with the board has never appeared.

Have people managed to expand the stadium? Or is it locked at 60,000?

It's set in the editor with no expansion capacity - in real life the Emirates was capped at 60,000 due to the transport links being insufficient to cope with more - originally 80,000 was considered
