Ah what could have been with Fiesty, unfortunately he just doesn't seem like he should take up one of those 9 non home grown spots. Fun to see an ex Derby player pop up regardless.

2030 Eliteserien Season Preview

--

lgTab_preview.png.a8accf193a8b1c72bfa96ce9f6fffb87.png

Bodø/Glimt are predicted to continue their resurgence and win Eliteserien in 2030.

Brann and Molde expected to make a recovery after a below par 2029 and we're predicted to finish 4th.

All three promoted teams are predicted to go straight back down to OBOS-ligaen.

Well...

Knight_01.png.f23763c78f699a987d8965b90869fb78.png

Jason Knight has been playing for Åsane in Eliteserien from 2028 onwards.

Knight_02.thumb.png.0e07f8319e941c113a51286e597c1368.png

I had the opportunity to sign him on a free, or take him on trial, when Bristol City released him but I didn't for two reasons:

  1. Viking were, arguably, strongest in central midfield, and...
  2. the Stuni Stuniverse in this save is Norwegian, a life-long Odds Ballklubb fan, who has no affinity for Derby County or its players.

Sporting Clube de Braga showed us the levels we need to reach to be successful in the Europa League.

We defended heroically for a good hour or so but Braga eventually scored the goal which, if I'm honest, had been on the cards.

With nothing to lose at that point, we went more Attacking and created some chances... but Braga picked us off with two more goals.

At least Preslav Borukov and Eivind Helland made their Viking debuts and Preslav got off the mark scoring a late consolation goal for us.

We'd love to qualify automatically and avoid the playoff but we'll need to win to guarantee finishing in the top eight.

This was a very special night in front of over 15,000 Viking supporters in a packed, 15,794 SR-Bank Arena crowd.

It wasn't a great game, very few chances for either side, but Martin Palumbo scored the only goal of the game for us and we held onto the lead.

Our de mørkeblå supporters were incredible tonight. I'd like to thank them for lifting the team.

Nice to see Diouf has not been discarded, I think you have two very good quality left-backs there.

We may have three now that we've signed Anders Hiim. We also have a very promising 19 year-old prospect who can also play left-back.

Thanks, @Jogo Bonito. It took some processing as January's friendlies showed up in our 2029 Schedule, whereas our two UEFA Europa League fixtures in the same month were in our 2030 Schedule.

I'm looking forward to returning to Høddvoll as I like to go back and visit my former stomping grounds.

Then we'll follow this friendly up with three friendlies against the teams relegated from Eliteserien last season.

Hopefully, that will set the players up nicely for when our competitive matches resume next month.

I'm going with a relatively young team today and we'll try and get them through 90 minutes if we can.

New signing Anders Hiim starts but we'll look to replace him with Joakim Ørstavik at some point.

It was great to be back at Høddvoll again and catch-up with former colleagues from my time their.

Overall I was pleased. For the most part we controlled the game asnd took the lead through an Abel Stensrud penalty after good work by Steinar Braathen to win the penalty.

We were unable to find the second goal though.

We only made one substitution, the pre-planned one at left-back, whereas Hødd made half a dozen or so. Not surprisingly, as the game wore on, our players tired and Hødd came close to equalising.

But we kept our hosts out for a 1-0 win.

I'm also thinking of using him more in central defence. Now that Marius Hoibraten is on the transfer list, El Hadji Malick Diouf is my only other left-footer who can play centre-back.

Those schedules, my word. No way could I cope with that

The only way I could get my head around it, at this stage, was to think of the Europa League matches as part of pre-season. Instead of pre-season friendlies, we play Europa League ties instead.

It feels better than the many, many, many pre-season friendlies I've gone with previously.

Yes, it is @Hootieleece

We need to make sure we go deep into whatever European Competition we’re in so that we can keep on doing pre-season this way.

Stabæk finished 3rd bottom of Eliteserien last season and were relegated after losing the relegation playoff 2-1 to Kristiansund.

Today, we'll go with a strongish starting 11 for 60 minutes and then make sweeping changes.

We're delighted to have been able to sign Jesper Robertsen from Tromsø. He will add depth to our defence, provide competition for Brice Wembangomo at right-back whilst allowing me the option to play Isak Amundsen in his preferred centre-back position more often.

We were always on top in this game I thought and we hit the woodwork two, if not three times early on.

Then Stabæk scored just before the half hour mark but that only served to make us step up another gear.

In the end, we ran out comfortable winners with braces from Gaetano Oristanio and Eivind Helland.

We did suffer a disappointing set-back with a serious injury to Yorbe Vertessen though.

Sarpsborg finished rock bottom of Eliteserien last season and were relegated to OBOS-ligaen.

Today, against Sarpsborg, we'll start a completely different 11 to the line-up that started against Stabæk and, again, we'll look to make sweeping changes around the hour mark.

If Sarpsborg show as much spirit and character this season as they did against us today, then Alexander Frei's team will be in for a successful season and, hopefully, can bounce straight back into Eliteserien.

We took a 2-0 lead in the first half and looked comfortable.

Sarpsborg were a different team after the break. I'm not sure what Alexander said to them at half time but it worked.

I don't think we took our foot off the gas, but Sarpsborg put us under pressure second half and fought their way back to 2-2.

We went 3-2 up and even then Sarpsborg hit the post.

4-2 probably flattered us a bit but, at this stage of pre-season, we'll take it.

We had planned to give Julian Faye Lund a full game but, as he bruised his hand and hands are very important for goalkeepers, we subbed him early in the second half as a precaution.

We brought Håkon Evjen in on trial. Although midfield is, arguably, one of our strongest areas and we don't play with wingers, I thought Håkon was a quality player worth us taking a look at.

Before we'd had chance to really assess him, or involve him in a friendly match, Rosenborg offered him a contract. At that point, I wasn't sure, so we didn't offer him a contract in the end. Maybe we should have done... I don't know.

Lillestrøm finished 15th in Eliteserien last season and were relegated to OBOS-ligaen. They are the favourites to bounce straight back this time around.

They will present a difficult challenge for our final pre-season friendly.

With the first leg of our UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie away at Villarreal in just four days time, I don't think any player will get more than 60 minutes today.

We knew Lillestrøm were going to be tough opponents and so it proved.

Twice we had to come from behind and then, when we did get ourselves in front 3-2, we gifted them an equaliser when young Eivind Helland conceded an 85th minute penalty. But I'd rather he do that in a friendly and learn from it than in a competitive match.

We kept going though and grabbed the winner just before the 90 minutes were up.

Around 55 minutes, trailing 1-2, we changed to an Attacking mentality and asked both full-back to attack as wing-backs.

Once we took the lead at 4-3, going into a minimum of four added minutes, we changed to a Balanced mentality, asked our wing-backs to defend, and changed to a box midfield with a defensive two behind a central midfield two.

Right from the kick-off Villarreal attacked us and we couldn't get the ball out of our own half. At times, it looked like we were chasing shadows.

We weren't surprised when they scored after six minutes, although it did come from a mistake from Johan Bakke.

After the goal, we changed to a Balanced mentality and whilst that did allow us to get something of a foothold in the game - Gaetano Oristanio hit the post - Villarreal were still all over us.

02_Villarreal_15_24mins.png.ca081beef2aa78f8809a989b0922d1b3.png

After about 25 minutes we changed our shape and went Cautious. It made for a more even game, but we were always second best.

We did have some chances after the break but it was Villarreal who scored their second.

We wanted to at least still be in the tie ahead of the return leg at our SR-Bank Arena.

I think we are still in the tie.

Just.

We have to believe we can progress and give it our best shot.

We start our defence of the Eliteserien title away at Sandnes Ulf so we want to make a good start.

I'm conscious though that we play Villarreal in the Europa League second leg in three days time so that's also at the back of my mind.

New signings Jesper Robertsen and Anders Hiim will almost certainly start as they weren't signed in time to be registered for the Europa League Round of 16.

Isak Amundsen was down to start today, with him being suspended for the Villarreal match, but he's bruised his thigh in training and will miss out.

We're going to go strong against Sandnes Ulf so we'll just have to manage the match as best we can and then see who's fit enough to start on Thursday at home to Villarreal.

It's disappointing not to have won this match but if you can't win it, make sure you don't lose it.

We went 2-0 up and were looking comfortable.

Then Sandnes Ulf pulled one back with a freak goal. Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson made a good save but the ball then hit David Brekalo's back and bounced over the line.

That gave them belief and, fair play to them, Sandnes Ulf equalised.

We made some changes to bring fresh legs on and I was confident we'd still get the win.

But then, within minutes of going on, with no substitutes left, Preslav Borukov hurt his hamstring and had to come off leaving us with 10-men.

Both teams had chances to win it but the match ended in a draw.

Man a rough couple of competitive games, there's still a chance down 0-2 but Vikings will have to come out swinging (obviously not literally). Always frustrating to give up a 2 goals second half lead.

Indeed @JaytheGreat. Villarreal are favourites to win the Europa League so a two goal defeat in the away first leg isn’t such a surprise. The 2-2 away draw against Sandnes Ulf in Eliteserien was a disappointment.

Yes. We have a chance in the home second leg but it won’t be easy. Villarreal outplayed us for the majority of the first leg and I had to change our shape and mentality fairly early just to get the ball out of our own half.

I’ll be honest, I’ve got no idea how I’m going to set Viking up to play Villarreal in the second leg.

Yes, it was. I maybe got a bit complacent and made substitutions I wouldn’t normally make because we have the Europa League second leg three days later.

I was confident we would still win the Eliteserien game until we got the injury, with no substitutes left, which meant we had to finish the match with only 10-men.

As if the Villarreal tie wasn't going to be tough enough, the injuries and suspension really mean we are down to our bare bones.

Our 4-4-2 diamond system, that usually serves us well, was pretty much ineffective against Villarreal in their Estadio de La Cerámica and I changed things around early.

I think we need to try something different if we're to have any chance of overturning the 0-2 first leg deficit in our own SR-Bank Arena.

The question is: what?

Injuries and suspensions, plus new signings Jesper Robertsen and Anders Hiim being unregistered as they weren't signed in time, meant we've had to call up two youngsters Christer Apeland and Dawid Zajac to fill out our bench.

I'm very proud of the players tonight and how well they played and how hard they worked to try and progress to the Quarter Finals.

Unfortunately it wasn't to be but I think we proved tonight that we deserved to be in this competition.

We were very competitive tonight, we had chances to win the tie, but Villarreal just managed to score at good times for them and once they did, the away goals rule makes it very difficult.

At 1-0 we hit the post and at 3-1 we hit the bar. On another night we may have got through but tonight was Villarreal's night and good luck to them.
